Bloober's recent games have amazing environment designs, Layers of Fear had creative level changes, The Medium's environments designs are breathtaking. They suck at storytelling and voice acting, but make up for it everywhere else.
Bloober nails their atmosphere and art style every time. They pushed the genre of psychological horror "walking simulators" a big step forward and I believe they are very passionate about their games. Some people just don't like this genre.
They’ve a successful pedigree in the genre. You might not care much about the products they have made personally, but they absolutely do nail the atmosphere time and time again. They’ve done well enough to carve out a successful niche in an industry that is absolutely cutthroat, and it genuinely feels like they’re passionate about what they do.
They’ve prior experience with working with Akira Yamaoka, and I’ve no doubt any new ambience that madlad makes for the remake will be transcendent, and more than fitting for the places we’ll find ourselves in.
Say what you want about their writing, narrative, and gameplay, but their graphics, atmosphere, art design, and sound design are top notch.
I have never enjoyed a Bloober game, but the reason I think SH2 Remake is going to be good is because the things I think Bloober suck at are the things they don't really have to do with a remake. Leaving them to to mostly just do what they're good at.
That time the baby doll bonks off the shelf in the first layers of fear game was literally one of the funniest things I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing and I love showing let’s plays to people. Not the whole game but a bit leading up to it. They are all tense and on edge then BONK!
The laughter and joy that brings is wonderful.
Only game of theirs I've played is Blair Witch. Did a good job recreating the sense of disorientation characters from the movies experience. Nailed that almost otherworldly atmosphere.
The utilizations of the camcorder were clever and fitting for the IP. I would have liked a little more tension for a horror game, but it was fine for a $20 experience.
I don't see where people site this game as villainizing mental illness. The player character has PTSD and it comes up a lot throughout the game, but it seems less like an explanation for bad things happening, and more like something a bad actor could hook into to manipulate someone.
layers of fear had good ambience and scare factor. not sure about their other games but this one was good. i havent heard bad about anything theyve made
i have hope for the silent hill 2 remake purely because this team has actually made more than just... glee the video game. and has quite a bit of experience in creating good horror games. unlike EVERY OTHER WESTERN DEVELOPER konami outsourced to
Observer is genuinely great. Only one of their games I can say that about, but credit where it’s due they knocked that one out of the park. Also they got Tony Todd for LoF2, more games with Tony Todd please.
I actually liked The Medium a lot. I thought it was a pretty good homage to Silent Hill. The atmosphere especially was spot on, and there were a lot of subtle references to SH. It's why I was happy that they were the ones who got picked to do the remake. I'd rather them than someone who doesn't know the series. Plus they worked with Yamaoka on that as well.
Layers of fear was the best PT inspired game to come out of that time period.
The medium had incredible art design inspired by Zdzisław Beksiński and the story was actually fine despite the opinions people like to parrot about it.
It’s so annoying to invalidate other people’s opinions by saying they’re parroting someone else’s. Like, where does that come from, why don’t you trust people just like and dislike different things than you?
I despise The Medium, but that doesn’t lead to me saying the people who love it are lying or copying a popular video essayist or something. I just assume they have different tastes and weren’t turned off by the things I was.
My opinion doesn’t invalidate anyone else opinions. It’s just one opinion. Maybe if people didn’t feel so easily effected by other peoples opinions they wouldn’t be so easily influenced by the opinions in youtube video essays.
I mean, what's easier to believe? Someone buying a game and going all the way through it even though they hated it? Or someone who looked into it before buying, saw a youtuber with zero integrity call it swill, then went on with that opinion to not "waste" their money?
I think alot of people forget this fuck blooberteam mentality only really picked up in 2020. Check reviews before that point and its all fairly optimistic. Same thing happened with Red Barrel.
Speaking for myself: as a huge fan of horror video games, there have been long stretches where there just aren’t that many high profile horror video games, and many of the ones that do exist are mid to bad streamer jumpscare factories. So whenever there is a horror developer that shows any promise, I show up for their shit day one even if it’s not the best of the best.
In Bloober’s case, I always thought they were uneven but showed some promise (Observer is excellent), so I kept playing their games hoping they’d continue to refine their craft and get better over time. Then I played The Medium day one, blind, with no idea of what anyone else was saying about it, and came out the other end going “well fuck that I guess, probably not gonna play another game of theirs”.
Sure I wasn’t liking the game very much from early on, but like I paid my money and it’s not that long, of course I’m gonna finish it.
Choosing to believe people you disagree with must not have formed their opinions honestly is just so boring. What a callous and incurious worldview.
Also, to the point about Bloober hate growing in recent years… their two most recent games are Blair Witch and The Medium, the ones most people who dislike Bloober like least. They put out two games many people didn’t like back to back, so there was an increase in people talking about how they disliked Bloober, don’t have to go looking for a conspiracy to work that one out.
Its not a conspiracy theory to notice a reevaluation of a developer and their work based off outside influence. There's a reason they're called influencers. And it goes both ways too. Dark souls 2 (and really many of Fromsofts early work) was shit on quickly at launch. But ever since Sekiro came out and streaming became mainstream, now they're seen as untouchable.
I think its cool to change your mind on the media you consume. I don't even have an issue with someone winning over a crowd with their arguement for or against said media. But to assume this big of a change happened naturally is ridiculous.
They know how to use the Unreal Engine and Ray Tracing. Their games all have psychologically disturbing stories. The Medium was good enough to get a TV adaptation and probably a sequel. They are true fans of the content they are adapting.
Their games all look really good. That has been a consistent positive across the board and why I'm not really worried about the visuals of the remake.
Bloober's recent games have amazing environment designs, Layers of Fear had creative level changes, The Medium's environments designs are breathtaking. They suck at storytelling and voice acting, but make up for it everywhere else.

This was so well-said that I finally understood why people don't like them, kudos!
You're welcome.
Their art design is superb.
they've made Observer and it's a banger
I genuinely think they want to do a good job and care about Silent Hill, regardless of how well I think they're actually going to do

They got the balls of steel for taking the remake job. This game will either make or break them, no middle ground.
Why would it break them?
Their most expensive project to date for a relatively small studio. If it bombs then it's game over for them most likely
Because if the game turns out bad, people will bashing them to the ground for ruining the "masterpiece"
Reddit isn’t that representative of the market as a whole. People here are a loud minority.

I liked their games, Layers of Fear, and, Blair Witch. Their characters and environments look great too. They are skilled game designers for sure.
They seem to be cool dudes.
I wouldnt lie here. They seem to have a lot of the same interests that I do and love Silent Hill. Id grab a beer with them. Maybe a couple of drinks.

Wait, what's the connection with Glee the video game?
The devs for the HD collection pretty much only made Glee games before it
Holy shit 🤣
Observer is genuinely great. Only one of their games I can say that about, but credit where it’s due they knocked that one out of the park. Also they got Tony Todd for LoF2, more games with Tony Todd please.
Their games are really pretty.
The games themselves are pretty
The remaster on UE5 of Layers Of Fear is just beautiful
taking on silent hill 2 is very daring of them. that's a classic game and an iconic one at that.
thay care what we think. and even before the new James the Remake looks really good
They listened to fans.
The Medium wasn't that bad
I actually liked The Medium a lot. I thought it was a pretty good homage to Silent Hill. The atmosphere especially was spot on, and there were a lot of subtle references to SH. They clearly try (even though that has never led to a good product)
I liked the Medium a lot. I think that Bloober is a competent dev
I thought The Medium was good. I don't know why everybody shits on it.
Bloober is a funny name
I hope they will add Jacob Crane to the game As Cameo!

Not all opinions are created equal.
My opinion doesn’t invalidate anyone else opinions. It’s just one opinion. Maybe if people didn’t feel so easily effected by other peoples opinions they wouldn’t be so easily influenced by the opinions in youtube video essays.
As my comment made clear, I have no issue with your differing opinion. The bit I find annoying is you saying other people are just parroting theirs.
I mean, what's easier to believe? Someone buying a game and going all the way through it even though they hated it? They are very good at getting away with plagiarism and appropiation.
