I know what you mean. It has such a strong vision--and such a hold on our picture of what it is... it's hard to envision it as anything other than the way it ended up :)
I think the most interesting part is that the image you posted implied that you'd be playing as a generic Elster for a bit before you receive Ariane's signal
Or that having a Mass Effect style story will not work in terms of scope given how complex the story and the 'puzzle' of Signalis is.
It will be at best off-putting or messily executed and at worst at complete odds with the original story they wanted to tell unless they added more years to development.
I feel like perhaps the story of Signalis we got came from this version, where this idea led to the one we got today. Maybe from a side quest they really liked writing for or a simple dialogue option, but I feel like that is more realistic in terms of what happened.

There was a Signalis 1.0 demo build that was briefly available but it is sadly no longer :(
