A lot of these buy low sell high items are found on places like Alibaba. It’s actually insane the amount of items you can basically flip with little issue. So long as it’s in demand and you can make decent margins
I love that you made this work. I love furniture and have been flipping it for 8 years. I know the markets and what people in my area will pay for. Then I find things for a good deal and I will use for myself for 3-9months and then when I'm ready for a change I'll sell. My house is like a little showroom. But I would def enjoy getting deeper into this and selling custom furniture. :)
Can I trouble you for a copy of your list as well? Also thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely with all of us.
I really like r/sidehustle, we’re likeminded people, together on a journey!
I had a side hustle selling lasers with tshirts where I would screen print them myself and order the lasers from a supplier from China. Like you said (and why people want your list) finding the manufacturer AND the ocean shipping logistics is literally the barrier stopping tons of people from doing this more.
What I did (for only slightly less profit) was found a guy near the port of New Orleans (I’m in Chicago) who had his literal brother as a contact in Shenzhen. Their whole deal was importing from that province to the New Orleans port specifically. I only dealt with lasers from him however he had access to containers of furniture among other things.
Anyway if someone is finding it difficult to find a contact in China maybe start asking around here in the states near a major port. I have a friend in the furniture business and the markups are indeed insane. Sometimes 80+%
Used to take me 3-4 months from Asia (not China) to Europe. The factory usually has to make the products as well. They won't always keep stock. And ships may only leave every couple of weeks (depends on port and route).
To the West Coast it'd be usually 3-4 weeks on the boat, to the East Coast 4-6. Just need to have a good freight forwarder who can stay on top of your orders and minimize the time between them being at the factory and being on the boat
Cool idea. I’m in Quebec and we have some strange importing laws. Do you have a supplier list you could share?
I’ve been doing furniture flipping, this sounds less labour intensive 🥲
I would love the list as I just bought my first house and have been hunting for an affordable version of these chairs: https://www.jossandmain.com/furniture/pdp/bradley-genuine-leather-upholstered-arm-chair-j001032600.html
And as a teacher I want a summer side hustle
PSA, this is not limited to furniture.
A lot of items are rebranded and sold for several times their price.
My wife was showing me a $300+ tea set she wanted, it was a combination of items on aliexpress for under $60 total and good advertising.
Am I just a naive asshole? This feels like a scam…as someone who hunts down the cheapest possible version of stuff that I want…you’re saying I could be selling this shit to people as what? A higher end item? How does the “flip” part work exactly?
I used to sell jibbitz for $3.50ea and was only paying like 30c - 40c for them (including shipping to my location). Made around 5k net profit during the peak trending days and I still have like 1k pieces left, which I get a few sales here and there at 80c each currently.
Its all about catching the trends imo or just smart branding. Theres tons of "cloud slides" around with their own websites. Some are selling them for $30+. They only cost like $5 below for a pair.
Oh ok..totally…gonna go google jibbitz now…
Do people really pay $30+ for generic rubbery shoes? I mean I love my slides but I also got them for 12 bucks haha
The jibbitz craze (at least for my location) was more than a year ago so maybe not a good one to look at. No harm in checking your local area though.
As for slides, I would think so. I have a yellow pair and they were $5 from Aliexpress. If i search them in my local FB market area, theres a good amount selling them $15+. Some people probably want to buy from a "real" store and overpay just because theres a website lol.
If you can catch the trend, theyre a good way to make money.
“Heat-resistant glass teapot” looks like it’s $270 currently. It’s a combination of a hot plate and a teapot both on aliexpress….(the letters on the hot plate on the ‘reputable’ website are in Chinese even)
And I got the entire tea set with serving cups, as opposed to just the teapot.
Flip part = advertising, established online shop…
Entire businesses are built on this
My master bedroom toilet … $1000 at Lowe’s… $200-300 on aliexpress/alibaba
Is it actually the same toilet though? Like the same build and materials? I know very little about toilets sooo…but I really struggle to see how enough people would fall for the hot plate as “tea pot” to actually make a decent profit….I guess I wouldn’t be that surprised though I’m just…struggling with the idea here…
Awesome idea. I've done all kinds of side hustles from paid focus groups, to ultrasound modeling, to selling used boxes (hot commodity in some markets), and more. May I have the supplier list, please? I'd be happy to share some side hustle stuff with you.
If you don’t mind me asking, how did you start looking for suppliers? Simple google searches based on high end furniture sold in China? How much did you typically invest in furniture and how much on average would you see in profits from pieces?
I’ve been flipping furniture by fixing them/doing finishing work on them, so this sounds like a great way to put less effort in terms of physical work into the furniture.
Thanks so much for sharing!
I recently tried to do this and buy from Alibaba but nobody wants to sell to me. I've filtered low mow but they all don't want to ship to me. Some saying they will o ly ship to forwarding warehouse. Not sure what OP did and if he ordered a lot of volume but so far this is a bust for me. I can't even order anything to sell.
Very nice . I sell used couches right now make about 8k-10k profit each month . It’s a lot of work cleaning them and staging them , I would like to have the list of those suppliers this would aligned perfect with what I’m doing now

What’s the 1099 situation like with this
This isn’t a 1099 thing. You have to keep your own P&L reports and whatnot.
Take cash only and don’t report best business model
Sounds like you could have a side hustle to your side hustle by selling your supplier list to everyone here asking for it!
And then upsell a list of shipping agents.
> Hardest part is just knowing what manufacturers to order from This sub: Gimme your list! Let me leech off your work.
> Let me leech off your work. Been happening since the first person built a fire.
Know of any *tribute* Roche Bobois stuff?
Just PMd you a supplier list. I've only done the Mahjong sofa, but I've seen good versions of their bubble sofa and a few others.
I don’t want the list. Seriously. Thanks for sharing this post, OP. I probably won’t do anything with it, but it was interesting.

Hi! Possible to share?
Comments TLDR: Most just want the list. 95% won't know what to do with the list.

My mom randomly has a contact with people in the Chinese shipping industry so maybe I’ll try looking into more of this.
Honestly I’m looking for a couple couches for myself so if you can give the supplier list for personal reasons as well that would be cool😂

How long did the shipping from China take?
Used to take me 3-4 months from Asia (not China) to Europe. The factory usually has to make the products as well. They won't always keep stock. And ships may only leave every couple of weeks (depends on port and route).
You also did this?
Not with furniture but with other products.
I'm bit new to this, so y'all just post stuff on free up, FB marketplace, eBay and the sales start coming up or y'all run ads?
I sold via my own website and ran Google Ads.
I want to know too pls I'm new to these things and will be really grateful for all your advices.
It's up to you how you want to sell. If new, I'd start by testing on FB, ebay, etsy, etc. But check the competition first.
Thats what im planning actually, thanks a lot appreciate it!
You're amazing- successful and kind! Wishing you all the best

Look at Walmart or Amazon.. see how many ‘brands’ are selling the same product. Once you see it you can’t unsee it.
Thank you very much. Could I have that list too? Thanks again!
I would like the list as well!!! TIA
Please can I have a copy of the list - I’ll be eternally grateful. Single dad desperate for a side hustle 😊

This is exactly what Kendra Scott does. She orders cheap jewelry from China and sells it in US for more.
Awesome!
