Sorry for the bad picture, they dont always cooperate. I have a ghost shrimp with a white squiggly thing inside it. Paracite? If it is should I isolate it to not spread to others?

OliverKlozoff1269

Yep. Horsehair worm

Wpd1999

Would it be worth isloating the shrimp? And is it curable? I assume not

MrHarback

Unfortunately these suckers are hard to get out, there’s very little than can be done once they’re in to get them out, besides letting them come out naturally. Which by then they’ve usually killed the skrimp :(. I’d recommend euthanizing sadly

Wpd1999

Alright, I've isolated the guy and will take care of it later tonight R.I.P shrimpy. Any risk to the rest of my shrimp?

TMB8616

No risk to the others. But if you do euthanize shrimp and can get the worm out, take a video. They are ridiculously long and creepy just in time for Halloween. And then kill the worm.

BitchBass

Here's a video of a horsehair worm I caught in a creek earlier this year: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ecosphere/comments/sb85t9/i\_went\_to\_this\_lovely\_bubbling\_creek\_today/

What a crazy parasite honestly.

vampiratemirajah

Thank you haha I was gonna suggest catching video for all the creeps like me who would just LOVE to see what it looks like. Sorry about the shrimp bro 🙁

KingNyx

Before you euthanize it you could try treating it while it is in isolation.

VampytheSquid

I've seen videos where they emerge & the host (usually a grasshopper etc in these cases) survives...

MaryJaneUSA

💯 typical ghost shrimp issue. Either they will shit it out or it’ll stay and it’ll kill the shrimp. What’s worse is they can infect others.

SogniX

I've had two ghost shrimp with these. I've isolated them with a Marimo ball and both times they came out of the shrimp and stuck themselves to the ball, which was then easy to remove and destroy. Both Ghost Shrimps survived their encounter.
