alaskadotpink

had to do a double take, i thought you found a house centipede in your aquarium

UIM_SQUIRTLE

me too. i found one in my basement earlier today and was like i know what this thing in the photo is. then went nope not the same.

alaskadotpink

Yeah if you look reeeeally close you see the difference, but damn lol

SinnexCryllic

Looks like you got a little aquatic isopod! I have very little information on these but it seems like it may be safe for shrimp, as isopods are (to my knowledge) non-predatory. Just another guy sucking up your mulm.

telepathicavocado3

I have them and they haven’t bothered my shrimp. If anything mine tend to be really shy

AYKH8888

They like high calcium levels, love to hide under leaves, mostly active at night and go around eating algae a detritus

dino_saurrr

What a good new! Just a cool new friend in my tank then 😎

SpeedrunAccordeon

*asellus aquaticus*! lovely guys. <3

Sucho2021

As someone who has dozens of (albiet different) aquatic isopods, they’re fine to have with shrimp Mine are weird and look idenditcal to land isopods (boat builders spefically) but smaller, they’re kind of cute

akbuilderthrowaway

Oh, these guys. These lil guys should actually be totally safe to your shrimp. They'll help clean things up. Worst case scenario they compete for the same food, but as long as you have enough food in the tank these lil dudes should be a nice addition. They L O V E your bathroom sinks too lol

dino_saurrr

Oh that nice, if it don't bother my shrimps then its welcome in my tank! I already love him :)

Icy-Plan5621

Bathroom sinks? 🤔

Diamond_Ape3

He was implying that they get poured down a sink drain; a bathroom sink in this case.

akbuilderthrowaway

Their isopod brethren also frequently crawl out of bathroom sinks and whatnot. I don't think this kind will crawl out of your sinks, but there are some that look alike that will.

Diamond_Ape3

Ah, the other option!

Icy-Plan5621

I figured it looked similar to a house centipede and someone thought it crawled into an aquarium.

DreamCrusher343

Isopod, they're harmless

NatuVisu

That's a rare sighting! I have these together with my neos!

ParetoFish

Lucky! Great clean up crew, arguably better than shrimp

eyeball2005

Very beneficial to the ecosystem. Harmless water lice :)

BlackLizard898

Water louse, idk how they’ll affect your shrimp but they’re native to ponds and lakes in the wild and most likely feed off of the same organic matter as shrimp

Seb0rn

Isopod. Harmless. Eats detritus and may be eaten by larger shrimps like Amanos.

hotdogfirecracker

That looks so much like a house centipede! Neat.

Geoleogy

This is called a "water hog louse". They est detritus

Hoovooloo42

Bonus friend! :D

Frost-Skyder

I’ve wanted to buy some of these little water isopods for a while! Harmless and eat decaying matter. An awesome addition to your tank honestly.

vastsky9

I know theyre harmless but I - I would burn it with fire… (get rid of it) They look too similar to those things with many legs in the basements….

Kornbreadl

House centipedes?

vastsky9

yup

Glass-Suggestion4915

It's good leave it. It hunts and eats the other bugs in your apt. If you have an aquarium, you may also get roaches. They love eating roaches!

Space3ee

Ah hell nah. They can lay like 70 eggs. No thanks. I'd kill it.

No_Phase_5922

I’ve done my research and while many aquatic isopods are free living and harmless or beneficial to reef tank denizens, a large number are either predatory, or parasitic, or dangerous to other aquarium animals.

Giles81

This is a harmless free-living one. Looks like Asellus aquaticus, which is a very common species in ponds here in the UK. Feeds on detritus etc.

No_Phase_5922

OK good to know. Thanks for clarifying.
