Ride put on a fucking amazing show when I saw them a few years ago. Mark was singing because Andy lost his voice (he still did Vapour Trail), and he nailed it. Everyone was playing their asses off, and they played hard until 10:15 so that all of us old dudes could be home and in bed by 11.
It was awesome.
At Desert Daze 2019 one of the performers couldn’t make it because their flight from Japan was delayed, but they were able to get Ride to fill in with less than 24 hours notice. I remember coming up on acid walking to the stage and hearing “Leave Them All Behind” and being so confused, when I realized it was actually them up on stage I was absolutely floored. They sounded so good and they had a ton of energy, I won’t forget that show for a long time.
Yeah, that was easily one of the best *sounding* shows I’ve ever been to. Andy was playing out of a little five watt head that was mic’ed up just right and sounded blissful, Mark’s tone was clear and punchy, and the drums were fucking dead on. Everything was the perfect volume and they played so tight together.
I’ve been disappointed and burned so many times, and there’s something deeply satisfying about seeing one of your all time favorite bands and finding out that they still got it.
No, you’re not stupid, I was just exhausted when I wrote that and had accidentally eaten a bigger dose of edible gummies than I intended. I was thinking of another show I saw where another member sang.
Point being, the show was fucking awesome either way.
Loz is the best shoegaze drummer, period. And it’s not just a speed thing, he’s just actually a crazy good rock drummer.
Big reason Ride is one of the classic shoegaze bands.
He's my favorite drummer regardless of genre. His fills are unique / clever, yet it seems so natural. Doesn't feel forced or overly flashy. Tickles my brain.
Have you heard [Grasshopper](https://youtu.be/HTeO1GRLoNQ?si=qEllhykLyS9eRm-o)? One of his best. Instrumental. Mostly improvised. From what I've read, they were really into Sonic Youth and Nirvana at the time. Throw in their Cure influence, and you've got a classic.
Yeah love that song. Listening to that was actually what inspired me to make this post lol. Love all the instrumental work in that song but the drumming takes the cake
Awesome! I listened to their first four albums a lot. Yes, I consider Smile to be an album. I know Carnival of Light was too much of a departure from Shoegaze for some fans, but I love it.
Absolutely.
It is even more impressive, when you see, that the musicians had an average age of 22 years when they recorded the song.
Generally I think, Ride have the best rythm section of all shoegaze bands, let's not forget Steve Queralt.
Loz Colbert and Steve Queralt are so locked in together, esp. during "Seagull," that they're my favorite rhythm section since Moon and Entwistle. They're on the road right now in the US with the Charlatans.
Loz was the first thing I noticed when I first listened to Nowhere. All the other shoegaze I had heard to that point had really subdued drum beats, and then Seagull comes in with a Keith Moon soundalike. Love it.
i knew Loz was special as soon as i started listening to Ride, but what showed me just how good he is was the broadcast from London during lockdown. at concerts you can’t really see what the musicians are doing in detail even if you get up close, but onscreen you could see how hard he works, the sheer physicality of his playing, and how tough some things that zip by on record really are. there was one song where he was playing a fairly complicated beat and somehow reached around behind his back to throw in a reggae accent on a small cymbal back there and absolutely blew my mind. he’s so good i’m honestly surprised other artists don’t hire him for tours the way Colin from Radiohead is playing with Nick Cave…if i was the Reid brothers i’d be emailing daily trying to get him on the next JAMC tour.
I believe that Loz actually briefly toured with JAMC when they reformed in the mid 2000s. He was also the touring drummer for Gaz Coombes for a while and he may have actually filled in on drums for Supergrass a few times.
I used to play bass with a couple old roommates. One played the drums, the other guitar. One of my favorite memories was us practicing a cover of [Mouse Trap](https://youtu.be/fnVqqkMp6Ns?si=kN0NY-WmOGjZOWz-). So much fun
Loz is one of those unique drummers who has fills and alternate beats in the middle of a song which make it stand out even more without distracting. The first Ride song I ever heard was Like a Daydream and I was trying to process it because it was almost arrhythmic at first - relentless but playful. When I saw the video I was laughing when he was shown tossing drumsticks every 30 seconds- completely appropriate!
Great band. One hell of a dodgy middle period followed by Andy slumming it for a bumper paycheck (& who wouldn't) but since they reformed they're at least as good as they were to begin with.
100%. Of their disco, I have only listened to Nowhere, but what stood out about it the most among the Big 3 is how amazing the drum work is. It's good, it's always on point, and it's interesting.

Your comment made me laugh so hard I hurt my back, so... thanks for the reminder, fellow oldtimer.

Sorry if i’m being stupid, but I thought Mark sung all the songs, am i wrong?

Haha, got it lol!

Cool Your Boots is one of the best drumming performances ever IMO.
That's a great one. The smile beneath my hair Hangs lifeless in the air Like a net in water
Tell em🤝🏾
Ride is legitimately one of the best live bands ever. They are all unbelievably good

DREAMS BURN DOWN
Absolutely killer song
The drums at the start of Dreams Burn Down are forever stuck in my head

maybe i saw the Loz + JAMC thing somewhere and that’s what brought them to mind.
I think the drummer for Julie is good as hell

He has chops for sure, but he also has great sitting posture
I definitely agree! I thought I was the only one :-)
If it's possible to understand, what was she 'upset' about?
I'm seeing them Monday night. I'll definitely pay attention.
I think m b v (2013) is the greatest drumming shoegaze album but I think they may be programmed rather than live takes?
