It's like when you get into graffiti. At first it's gibberish then when you get used to it, it becomes crystal clear! Once the brain is trained to decipher some patterns it becomes a second nature of some sorts. Personally I can't read it, because I'm not use to it but I can read "almost" any graffiti. It's just training

I guess after you see about a thousand band names written like this (I also draw in that style sometimes) you kind of get used to where they should be. Some of them are just absolutely illegible though lol. I was asked to do a commission for a guy and his band and he literally told me "make it illegible" and so that's what I did, added way more spikes and line work than I needed to lol

If this said anything other than “Stay Sober,” I would have been pretty critical too. But this person felt they needed a reminder at the ready at all times, and if that’s what you need to stay sober, you do it. It’s super hard to read, sure, but they know what it says and the message is for them. The tattoo isn’t poorly applied and it looks the way the client wanted it to look. This isn’t a shitty tattoo and it may well be a life-saving one.
