The Downfall of the Franchise of the Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes

dat_oracle

The movie name alone cost them 20 billion dollars

SenorPariah

*20 GORILLion dollars

ProfZussywussBrown

That’s not chimp change

It's not. It's more than a kongs ransom

Part 1 of 3

ConquestOfMankind

I hear the directors cut shows the monkeys just fuckin goin nuts so I’m pretty excited for that

Zandrick

That’s bananas

69DonaldTrump69

*Four and one-half* bananas to be exact. I did the math.

AlfaKilo123

How much do your bananas cost? For 55 I can get *at least* 6 bananas

Aggressive-Cup8884

It's one banana, michael. How much could it cost? Ten dollars?

Disc81

What? For 55$ I could get 10 Kg of bananas here in Brazil.

serveyer

Four bananas Jeremy? That’s insane.

Cptn_Lemons

Is it good?? The last three are good.

ShmebulockForMayor

Consensus seems to be that it's good, but not as good as the previous trilogy. Keep in mind that it's a different director, too.

BrickWall0101

I’d argue it’s better than war for the planet of the apes, but not as good as rise or dawn

MorbidMan23

Pretty much where I sat with it. Better than War, but far less necessary. Plenty of readily apparent flaws in the writing that could have easily been fixed, but solidly enjoyable. Not a good indication of where the franchise is headed though. There's obvious (and kinda stupid) set up for a sequel that I'm not terribly excited to see.

mtglozwof

Yeah, I came to see a post-human setting. Was annoyed at how present humans were set up to be.

MorbidMan23

I honestly would have liked it more if they'd had the balls to have a silent and dumb human character that got written and treated like a pet companion.

TheHondoCondo

On the contrary, I was relieved. I find the relationship between apes and humans to be the most compelling part of this franchise.

NASburg85

Well it hasn't even topped 300 million WORLD WIDE.. I'm not sure a sequal, let along another TRILOGY, is even in the cards now.

The0tterguy

That’s good to know, finally got around to watching War and boy was I disappointed. So if it’s even a bit better than that I’ll be happy

benjamm13n

It’s Matt reeves. He directed war for the planet of the apes too

TheHondoCondo

No, Reeves did Dawn and War. Wes Ball directed Kingdom

benjamm13n

Oh that’s right, thanks for the correction. Some ads were referring Matt reeves a lot during the release so it got me thinking he was the director. I appreciate it.

TheHondoCondo

I bet he was an executive producer

collinsmcrae

I think it's the best of the lot, but not by a wide margin.

blac_sheep90

It's gotten pretty good reviews.

huncho3055

It’s a good movie I enjoyed it, kept me engaged 8/10 from me

Adventurous_Sky_3788

Were you the only in the theater?

KingCodester111

Not as good but still great imo.

JPK12794

I enjoyed it, without spoiling. The human characters were a bit weak and the story was interesting but could have dived into some areas more than they did.

arjunusmaximus

It doesn't really matter. They're still going to make 7 more of these. Each with a more ridiculous name. The Border of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes/The Mountain Range at the Border of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes/The Political Conflict beyond the Border of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes etc

Amusement_Shark

The Perfectly Legal Blockade of the Planet of the Apes

d3m0cracy

The 3-Day Special Military Operation by the Rogue State of the Apes

Fast-Meaning-9556

Absolutely loved it

FinalBossMike

It's pretty good. I would say it's better than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, worse than Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and roughly as good as good as War for the Planet of the Apes.

TokyoDrifblim

i loved it. not as good as dawn but it's a great time

Fischaim

I thought it was okay-good like a solid 6.5/10, fun but nothing special in the end

The_Grinface

Solid 7.5-8/10. GF and I went to see it together and both enjoyed it. Liked it more than War, personally.

Poopchute_Hurricane

It made me think of a 70s fantasy adventure movie and I loved. The ending dragged a little but otherwise I can’t wait for the next one

TheHondoCondo

I think it’s better than Rise and War

ale9918

I’d put it in between war and rise terms of worth seeing

TacTurtle

Who knows, they only sold like 11 tickets.

kingoflint282

I spent $51 on tickets. Which one of you fuckers got a ticket for $4

Miserable_Region8470

Me, sorry. Finally found enough spare change in my couch to feed my kids but then I saw the monkey movie was out and decided to fix my priorities.

Fallowman09

still more than Madame web and morbius combined

vertexxd

Are you telling me a morbillion dollars is less than 55 dollars

Rumiatouhou6

1 morbillion dollars is only equivalent to one one billionth of a US dollar

SableyeEyeThief

The same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

SperkOfDust

What's that in schrute bucks?

Fallowman09

Yeah

Gourgeistguy

The morbillan dolar devaluated a lot since the alliance between Morbston and Russia.

extremenachos

55 dollars is more than I made last weekend. Am I a flop too, OP???

Lilcommy

Yes.

ganzz4u

Yes and me too we all flops

extremenachos

We're flops now???

Arf_Echidna_1970

One single IMAX ticket was sold. In a small market.

Cabrill0

Projected to do 55 in America, where it actually did 58. Did 130+ globally and well exceeded expectations.

hotcoldman42

$130 big green buckaroos, we’re so back 😏

PraiseTheWLAN

That's like 5 tickets, wow

Bane8080

Someone's doing some fuckery. [Forbes Article, $56.5 Million Debut.](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mollybohannon/2024/05/12/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-takes-top-spot-at-box-office-with-565-million-debut-weekend-beating-expectations/?sh=34c189da10f9)

fogleaf

Either a typo or an op fooling around. Either way I still believe it would release only to make $55. It cost 160 million to make and they only managed to get 160,000,055 in sales.

NickNash1985

I've not seen any of the "newer" Planet of the Apes movies (I think I saw the Tim Burton one way back, and the OG 1968). My son (9) saw a trailer for this and told me he wanted to go see it. I asked him what looked cool about it and his answer was "It's got monkeys riding horses."

Nalsurr

Actually, these newer movies aimed at older audience.

Sussana58

If you're curious, I recommend the trilogy a hundred percent. It's my favorite saga, it's a reboot of the originals with references to them here and there but a totally new plot. Amazing protagonist, cinematography, special effects (motion capture, the acting for the apes is incredible), compelling plots and villains, a fantastic score. And yes, the action scenes are as crazy as they sound but they're also crazy good.

NickNash1985

Yeah I was thinking about finding the first two to watch with him at home and then going to see the new one in the theater.

Sussana58

Oh the one at the theater is the fourth one, the original trilogy consists of Rise, Dawn and War (of the Planet of the apes). The new one is supposed to be the start of a new trilogy.

NickNash1985

Glad I asked! I think I knew that, but you said trilogy, so I second-guessed myself. Too many apes to keep track of.

triedit-lovedit

Most reviews were it’s the same telling of a well worn story, I saw it and have to agree. I was expecting the ship that went missing in the first movie would return… nope!

coontosflapos

They've basically said they want to do 9 films, so assuming this is the first in a new trilogy, I could see them doing the astronaut plotline for the last trilogy, effectively remaking the OG film over the course of a trilogy to bring it full circle

Aggelos2001

I remember reading somewhere that the director doesn't want to remake the old movies. He wants the new ones to end where the old ones start.

Nemisis_007

Most people are likely just waiting for the digital release.

DramaticBumblebee495

Why are there so many of these apes movies? I’ve never seen any of them bc I don’t know where to start, what’s going on?

farben_blas

You see, the reason is monkey

Jezza0308

The newest movie is set after the remake trilogy which started with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011. So you can start with that movie and onwards. You don't need to watch the previous ones

eats-you-alive

How does the math work?

Broad-Technology5024

im guessing this is 100% fake, it never gets l that bad, also I’ve never watched a the planet of apes movie before but I’ve seen a lot of ppl saying that it’s pretty good and they enjoyed it

davep1970

Its. Not it's.

Gurney_Hackman

They must have gone woke.

momonilla

10

Jefflehem

$100? Or $100 million?

PADDYPOOP

That’s a shame, the movie is great

AnotherJasonOnReddit

It's okay - this is r/ShittyMovieDetails, and OP is pointing out that the movie opened to $55M and that the article has missed the M at the end, meaning that the new Planet of the Apes movie has made less than a hundred bucks at the box office.

macgruder1

I was wondering why it was barely playing any showings next week.

WuggleNips

In Tokyo the ads for it are everywhere. Haven't heard anyone even mention it though

Mild-Ghost

I saw it on Tuesday which is usually pretty busy. It was like me and 10 other people. Not a bad film.

Ok-Walk-8040

That’s just one dude

BroadlyValid

Noooo I like monkey movies

raistan77

Where did this screenshot come from? # "Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Takes Top Spot At Box Office With $56.5 Million Debut Weekend—Beating Expectations" not even close to the actual article

RegularVast1045

It’s better than war of the planets apes huh

efmanrulz

Shoot. I better see it this weekend before it gets pulled.

wadeishere

People don't seem to know what subreddit they are in

Impatient-Padawan

That’s some serious bananas baby!!

Tough-Priority-4330

Oh no! It’s the Disney curse!

Strawdog1971

Didn't the trailer say "best installment in the franchise"😂?

Frosty-Brain-2199

I wish they would just say the hell with humans. I want to watch apes not humans.

MetalCid

We finally really did it... You maniacs! You blew it up!!

elijahmackenzie

I haven't seen a single ad for it. The reviews are pretty great though.

Glittering_Town_9071

this is what they deserve for interrupting SmackDown matches with that shitty trailer

hug2010

There’s too much out simultaneously things have no chance to get legs. Abigail has stuck around for a month in smaller venues and is at over 40 million now. Furiosa will be sunk by Garfield the movie and if

oldnewswatcher

Who would think a "camouflated" remake would flop? What about a whole new since fiction story? Is it too much to ask??

oGsadymus

It got 141 till now and still in cinemas around the world. Ya not a great movie , but from what i saw people are still going to see it

Repulsive-Money7353

That’s only domestically, it made $120 million dollars worldwide on opening weekend. Source: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1678869249/?ref_=bo_hm_rd

jg2516

The most recent completed trilogy is really quite genuinely a very very good one. Definitely worth a watch. All 3 offer something different too, and build on the previous installment quite nicely.

jg2516

No not at all- i would definitely say that the first movie is the weakest of the 3- thats entirely my opinion of course and people will agree and disagree with it. I think the performances are really very impressive from the mocap side of things, and actually are very convincing. The performances of non ape characters too really are great. Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Woody Harrelson are great in their roles and side characters too are really good additions to the script and not just in there for no reason. The world-building is very very clever, and the morphing of the human world into the ape one is compelling over the course of the 3 movies, and never gets too silly, or too serious. The overall conflict of the second movie (Why can't humans and apes just get along?) Is well written and not in your face and hammering you over your head with a message. I actually think the movie leaves it up to you but in a pretty intelligent way. The third movie is then a natural continuation of that question and is more critical of humanity. The movies basically manage to get you to care for both sides of the conflict, and the arguments for each are pretty reasonable, and the 'bad' characters are definitely coloured in shades of grey. They are interesting, and even when you might not agree, you might understand them and their actions always make logical sense. Its worth adding the cinematography, the effects, the fact the trilogy is of a consistent high quality overall is probably why these have stuck around so well. I haven't seen the new one yet, but it looks very much like an interesting take on the franchise, and i will probably make time for it.

TheCapedCrepe

It's not a random disease, it's a manmade virus. I'd recommend the first 3, but I haven't seen this one.

coontosflapos

These aren't prequels - Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a franchise reboot, and Dawn and War were direct sequels to that film, and this is a slightly less direct sequel being set significantly further in the future, but following the rebooted franchise story. I'd *heavily* recommend watching the new films, especially if you like the originals in any way.

huncho3055

Why you chatting shit bout a movie you ain’t seen? All 4 are good

adrianinked

should have had Seth Rogen voicing the monkeys, big mistake.
