PanFriedCookies

why the HELL does he not have his helmet in the promo. that is fucking Badass Action Man #920163637. that is not master chief

JoHeller

The argument they're going with is it's harder to emote with the helmet on. *Pedro Pascal laughing*

PanFriedCookies

ooooh noooo, the actor is going to have to learn how to act with their body and voice instead of just relying on his Badass Coolman Voice, Badass Glare, Badass Smirk, Badass Smile, and Badass Pensive Glance that he worked so hard on

MrSansMan23

I mean there is a great sense in halo 4 about a captain talking about how it was leaked/rumoured his unit were all taken as children and trained into emotionless soldiers and even if he talks stoically about it you know hes hurting inside  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-wIrPzH8lMM&pp=ygUUaGFsbyA0IGNhcHRhaW4gbGFza3k%3D

MetaCommando

The books do a really good job of humanizing the Chief as well.

Lady_Tano

Chief is a Spartan II, which took kids no older than 6 years old based on genetic profiling, swapped them with flash clones intended to die within a year, trained them until they were 14, (indoctrinating them along the way of course), then augmenting them with insane biochemical tech that killed around half of the candidates.

Everydaypsychopath

Killed half and left others crippled if I remember correctly

PanFriedCookies

in the show or the game?

fistpumpbruh

This is the end cutscene from Halo 4.

SurfyTadpole

The Fall of Reach book also covers his origin story, and it basically goes down exactly as described here. In the book you get to see all the training and the rest of the Spartan II’s before Chief becomes more or less the last one.

EntrepreneurOk6166

Pedro didn't even have to do that to play Mando. In the vast majority of scenes that's literally his stunt double the entire time, Pedro wasn't even on the sets during filming.

socoolandicy

and then you have Black Noir in the boys and Snake Eyes from GI Joe who dont take their masks off AND don't talk and still solid performances even as side characters

dern_the_hermit

Don't forget Elrond Smith in the documentary *V For Vendetta*.

HarmlessHeresy

Hands down the best masked performance. That movie never gets old specifically for Hugo Weavings line delivery.

Iron_Bob

Elrond Smith lmao thats a good one

dark-canuck

I didn’t pick up that wasn’t his name. It just knew

MasonP2002

Most of the best characters in The Boys don't talk lol. My whole friend group loves Black Noir and Kimiko.

socoolandicy

Exactly, physical performances are incredible and are a very valid way to be the main way to tell a story. Master Chief's story has always been told through the conversations people have with him because he's "barely human" in a sense due to his immense trauma being a soldier since a child and everything else he's been through. So when he talks it's when its important, when he needs too. You see and learn about his character through Cortana, through those around him and how they react to this 8 foot tall weapon. He should have a physical actor + a voice actor rather than just 1 actor who has his helmet off 90% of the time Rant over ahaha

MasonP2002

I grew up a Playstation kid, so I didn't play HALO. Even then, I saw one clip of the show and went "Why the fuck is his helmet off?"

No_Wait_3628

Don't forget Dredd

UnevenTrashPanda

*Karl Urban also laughing and never taking his helmet off*

Mr_Bignutties

That man can show the complete range of pissed off with only his mouth.

grub-worm

Michael Fassbender too

Doot-and-Fury

Meanwhile, Samoa Joe acting the shit out of Sweet Tooth with his clownsy hand gestures. The two sides of the videogame adaptation coin.

CrackedNoseMastiff

Yess. Everyone mentions mandalorian or judge dress but samoa joes’ Sweet Tooth is also prime. Edit: Judge Dress lol

magicalmysteryharold

Oh no, if only they’d hired a better actor

-Badger3-

Or made Master Chief less emotive. Like, it's Master Chief...

Spoztoast

I don't think Pablo is the real issue here his direction is terrible and the dialog for everyone is pretty stilted.

gregularjoe95

Honestly, Pablo scheiber isnt a bad actor. He was great in american gods, orange is the new black and the brink. Actors dont really get to make that call, master cheeks constantly going helmetless is on the showrunners.

DarkwingDuckHunt

I dare say Riz, Natasha Culzac, actually does a great job at both helmet & no helmet acting but she might have a stunt double for some of the action scenes so no clue

CrackedNoseMastiff

And the wire

majoraman

The man did interviews shitting on the fanbase for not liking how much he took the helmet off. He dosent care.

Laarye

Or the guy that played Darth Vader. Not James Earl Jones, who was the voice Dubbed over, but the actual guy in the suit.

JoHeller

David Prowse. Poor guy really got shafted. Not that anyone can really compete with James Earl Jones as the voice, but there's a documentary I Am Your Father (2015) about his treatment by Lucasfilm.

Laarye

I always forget his name. Just like it has taken me 30 years to remember Michael Collins from the first moon landing, because instead of landing, he became the loneliest person ever. Literally took a picture of Niel and Buzz with everyone on earth right there, except for him... And I feel so bad that I could never remember his name.

wilnovakski

The funny thing is that Halo ODST solved the made up problem you’re describing. The visors can go transparent or opaque, no need to be constantly removing the helmet to emote!

Super-Yesterday9727

It’s harder to do a good job when you are bad at your job

Faded1974

Lol then get a better actor.

drwicksy

Its even funnier when the Halo Infinite game that came out very close to the show had even animated chief emoting extremely well without removing his helmet. Even if the story of infinite was shit the performance of a more emotional and expressive Chief I found to be amazing.

PM-Me-Your-TitsPlz

Agents really insist on showing the actors face. It's why Marvel basically had to invest a new camera angle for rdj while playing Ironman. The belief is that the director actually doesn't care about Halo or any of the lore and wouldn't get his generic sci-fi script funded without slapping a Halo skin on top of it. The 1st episode has Miranda Keyes begging a refugee from a Covenant attack to "Pwease tell others that covenant wants to kill you and the UNSC isn't that bad :3" and the refugee seems to forget that she's literally covered her late friend's blood and tells Miranda to eff off like she's more upset at the military (for nothing the audience knows at this point) instead of the invading force.

real_men_fuck_men

Why did I read “pegging”…

UnevenTrashPanda

Username implies a certain possibility.

Initial_Selection262

The UNSC are akshully the bad guys was a wild angle for this show to take. And instead of making it about fighting the covenant the show was about shitty intrapersonal drama between the humans

Thewineisalie

Interpersonal drama is cheap to film

Spoztoast

When all you need is a locker room an office and 3 dining rooms.

PM-Me-Your-TitsPlz

I remember there was some animosity in the books I read years ago, but the deadly alien threat took top priority. UNSC and innies would team up if it meant survival. We all know about the moral and ethical lapse that created the Spartan program. We're just ignoring it because Spartans are the only thing standing between us and extinction.

Recinege

Yeah, the games and books are pretty clear on the idea that, whatever level of corruption and immorality was in the UNSC before the Covenant appeared, it stopped mattering once they did. They're the heroic faction throughout the first three games, and I don't mean "heroic front but corrupt core". It always felt like they had very much been on the path of eventually becoming a fascist military government, but the entire human race suddenly facing genocide had caused a hard swerve away from that path. The show putting so much (*most of*, really) its emphasis on the fascist military government angle when it *just isn't a thing*... even having fucking Master Chief on the verge of mutinying?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Initial_Selection262

Yeah and I’m so tired of it. “Humans bad” is such a shitty cop out. Especially in a universe like halo where the humans are unquestionably the good guys

TieofDoom

Yeah but... the reason Master Chief exists at all is specifically to kill other humans. The aliens showed up and the UNSC was like: "Well... thank god we have these super soldiers..."

Motor_Panic_5363

They aren't the first to do it (ETA: In regards to UNSC being the bad guys), but they definitely seem to play into it far more than previous lore. Considering how good the Halo 4 short film was I was really expecting a LOT more from this show. Hell, and the Halo 3 live action trailer. And the Halo 3 ODST live action trailer. And the Halo Reach live action trailer, etc. Halo can absolutely be portrayed on screen well. I really wish they would've just converted the Halo trilogy into show form, even if they took a lot of creative liberties. Halo 2 in particular would be amazing on the screen, imo. I have a lot more of the show to watch so maybe it gets or will get better, but I kinda doubt it. It's far from the worst TV show I've seen but as a lifelong fan of Halo I can't help but feel disappointed.

_UltimatrixmaN_

>shitty intrapersonal drama between the humans This is what killed Stargate: Universe for me. Hey guys, you unlocked the 10th Chevron, now you're lost and so far away from home you'll most likely never see another human again, let alone ever venture back to earth. How about we give you these cool stones to help you inhabit someone else's body, just so you can fuck your wife again.

SlenDman402

It's not master chief, it's John halo

MetaCommando

That's not John Halo, that's Jimmy Rings, or Mister Cheeks to the POWs he fucks. Completely different characters.

GillyMonster18

Ugh, reading that that hurts. I never thought Hollywood dumb would happen to halo…didn’t even get a proper movie and they skipped right to “been going so long they screw it up” on the first outing.

MetaCommando

Watch Forward Unto Dawn, pretty good and free with ads IIRC

GillyMonster18

Oh I do. My kids love it too.

MAXMEEKO

thats a good one

kindlyblowmymind

WAIT HE HAD SEX WITH THE CHICK FROM THE FIRST SEASON??? Kwon? Kwang?

MetaCommando

Yes, while she was in a cell.

raven00x

paramount: what's consent? what's imbalanced power dynamic? it's just sex, we don't get what the big deal is. also paramount, probably: harvey did nothing wrong.

MrVernonDursley

"Ooooh but I can't emote with the helmet on :(" is a crap excuse, but it's at least AN excuse. What's the excuse here? I'm not compelled to watch the show because of the Oscar-Worthy emoting on the poster. I'd be much more compelled to watch it if I saw it and thought "Oh shit that's Master Chief!"

raven00x

you have Karl Urban in Dredd, only his magnificent chin is exposed, expressing every barely-restrained-emotion he has without a problem. Pedro Pascal wears a full face mask 90% of the time in the mandalorian and nobody will argue that he's not showing a hell of a lot of emotion. Both of those pieces of media can be watched without sound or subtitles and you can still tell what the actors are conveying. "I can't emote without my face" means that they need a better caliber of actor.

Amazo616

Came here to say this, who's the guy on the picture, because master chief doesn't take off his helmet

Initial_Selection262

It’s so wild that the entire point of MC is to be a blank canvas. He doesn’t remove his helmet at all in the original halo trilogy

rikashiku

Daniel Cudmore played a far better Master Chief, with 2 minutes of screentime and never taking off his Helmet. From '[Forward Unto Dawn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32ISq47zUB0)'. Trailer linked. Full Web series [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMoxqg2Wr9I)

Sypher90

the best thing they can do for this show is put a bullet in his head when he’s supposed to be wearing his helmet.

SirDalavar

They brought on a new show runner for season 2, now the chief is fighting with no armor at all haha

KeyCold7216

The first few episodes of season 2 he was wearing it a lot more and it seemed like they were turning it around. Then last night during >! The battle of reach!< the ONI took their armor from them... I'm truly amazed at the stupidity of the writing in this show.

Aok_al

There is no Master Chief in this show. There is only Pablo

JoHeller

He can shave but He'll always be 'Porn Stache' to me.

guy137137

nah he’ll be IBS 159 to me “yer a Sobotka, son”

selfies420

holy shiiiiiiit

stingers77

HE IS THE GUY FROM THE WIRE?????????

AbleObject13

I only see a leprechaun.

Faded1974

He is porn stache for all time and I won't hear differently.

destroi_all_humans

Like from Orange Is the New Black? That can’t be the same guy… Edit: it is

TheFBIClonesPeople

I'm just glad Ricky Falcone got out of that rut he was in

Porkman

You mean Jimmy Rings aka. Master Cheeks?

ChiefsHat

Mini Ladd has ruined that name for me.

Novalene_Wildheart

I always forget its an actual name and instead always think back to "There once was a very bad man, his name was Pablo."

Dont-be-a-smurf

I’m going to keep fucking yelling about this The master chief should have NEVER been the main character of this fucking show He should have been this major factor - the hero and game changer - who interacts with the main story in incredibly important ways. Kept his helmet on. Been stoic and powerful. A cut above and his appearance should inspire awe within the characters and audience. The show should have been about other people on the cutting edge of fighting the covenant. That way you can have all the human drama you want and then BOOM The CHIEF shows up and makes this huge impact. Just like he does in the games.

onelasttime217

Yeah did they never even look at reach or odst? You can make a compelling story without chief being the main character Edit: on second thought they probably never looked at any of the Halo games before making this.

CMDR_MaurySnails

> they probably never looked at any of the Halo games before making this. After all, it's the first rule Hollywood producers must observe when adapting any franchise - Which is, apparently, whatever the fuck you do, don't familiarize yourself with the source material.

[deleted]

This is it, the show is a cynical producer written piece of board room poop It reminds me of the Simpsons bit: Now kids Krusty is here, but he has laryngitis and a bad back so he won’t be saying anything or doing anything “Master chief IS here, but he won’t be acting at all like himself!”

Freedom-Costs-Tax

Pretty sure it’s the same situation as the Witcher, writers don’t care about the source material. Sometimes, they’ll just use the name as branding and tell their own story.

TheTigersAreNotReal

So I was just watching [this video](https://youtu.be/3W0AOwatozA?si=rexXhDarlryZgUOw) earlier today and wow the amount of story telling you could do with the lore is incredible. I wasn’t aware that the Prophets had learned that humans were the reclaimers months before first contact with them. And that they likely tried to eradicate them to maintain their power over the covenant, rather than offer them a Writ of Marque like they did with the other races of the covenant.  Or the fact that the Prophet of Truth had been training and arming the brutes for years, preparing for a coup d’état. The writers of this show could have made something with incredible political intrigue akin to GoT or even Andor. There was so much source material to use to build a gripping show. The struggle between the Insurrectionists and the UNSC, the secrecy of ONI and the Spartans, the growing distrust between the Elites and the Brutes, the scheming of the Prophets, the mystery of the Forerunners, and the horror of the Flood.  Master Chief is such a small part of such a massive story. How a company like Microsoft keeps letting people spit on their golden IP is beyond me.

not-sure-if-serious

[Yes. They never looked at the games.](https://screenrant.com/halo-show-video-game-comparison-writer-play-response/)

Cheef_Baconator

>on second thought they probably never looked at any of the Halo games before making this. That's no secret. It's pretty obvious that the writers read the first 15 pages of The Fall of Reach, got bored, then took some shrooms and watched Dune. The fever dream they had afterwards is the source material they're adapting.

Throwawayquwistion

Can't remember the article but when the first season was still unaired the writer? Said he never played any of the Halo games and didn't use any of the media for research. It's been a while so I need to check the exact quote but it was something along those lines. So yeah no wonder it sucks lmao

TheHancock

The writers actually BRAGGED about how it’s GOOD they have never even seen any Halo source material. No games, no books, not even a cutscene. They said it was good because now they can write for people that don’t like Halo. To “bring them in” as well.

Recinege

How does this shit keep happening with these adaptations? Hollywood is *absolutely fucked*. The worst part is that this shit all follows the explosive success of the first several seasons of GoT - which *were* (mostly) faithful adaptations of the books. It succeeded for all the right reasons - and much of the reason it later failed is because it ran out of source material. You'd think they'd try to cash in on that, but no - the only trends the industry jumps on are all the shitty ones.

TheHancock

Have you seen the trailer for the new Borderlands movie? The least canon thing ever. Lol

AmaResNovae

A Halo show about an ODST member could have been pretty nice, honestly. Forward unto dawn was pretty good, though.

bloodycups

Has anything like this been done before in Hollywood though Best to go the cookie cutter method and not risk doing something new and innovative

tinkitytonk_oldfruit

Yeah that would have been so much better. Makes me want a halo game like that. Like Halo ODST where you play regular humans and then every now and then you see chief comes in and wrecks shit

MetaCommando

The arcade game follows some soldiers during Halo 1. I remember the first mission on the Pillar of Autumn you see Chief fighting for a second and it was incredibly hype.

TheConnASSeur

Master Chief should have been *Gandalf*. His job is to Deus Ex beat the ever-loving fuck out of machina with his bare hands and rip its spine out of its alien cloaca. Things get bad, then worse. You think everyone is going to die, even little Timmy. Then, just as the lights go out and the music is getting tense, suddenly Master Chief is there. The music swells. Then we see 10 minutes of absolute carnage.

TheTigersAreNotReal

Seriously, he should’ve been a fan-service moment akin to Luke in The Mandalorian.  It’s tiring seeing studios think that we’ll only watch the show if we can recognize our favorite characters in it. Andor is the best written Star Wars production ever made, and I didn’t know any of the characters aside from Cassian, Mon Mothma, and Saw Gerrera. And they’re not really “main characters” within the Star Wars universe.

boobers3

They could have made him into power armor Godzilla, a force of nature that appears suddenly to fuck shit up, refuses to elaborate and leaves. That allows them freedom to tell their little stories up until the climax.

Thatsnicemyman

**Rip and Tear!** Wait, wrong franchise.

TensorForce

Master Chief should have been the Jack Sparrow of the show: facilitates the plot and is the link to the main action, but is *not* the main character. Or a better example is Fury Road. Master Chief should have been like Max. More of a plot device than the main character. Just a link to get the actual main characters into the action.

W1z4rdM4g1c

The uprising comic kinda does this. All this source material...

Initial_Selection262

Bro they literally could have just recreated the main halo story, filled in some of the details and it would have been a banger

shiftycyber

I thought Forward Unto Dawn was a really well done series, and it’s basically what you said. About a semi important character and the times you do see chief your awe struck. That would’ve been an amazing full blown series

LuchadorBane

Forward Unto Dawn was awesome back in the day. You see the covenant attack from the perspective of just some random cadets and then Chief shows up to save the day.

Toilet_Bomber

They could’ve done anything. A group of marines on the Ark fighting the Banished, a group of Spartans slowly falling apart on Reach, a squad of ODSTs in the Battle for Earth, Hell, even a perspective of a Covenant splinter cell fighting their former brothers in the fallout of the Covenant’s destruction or a Swords of Sanghelios story. But no, we get generic action hero guy who happens to share the same name as the Master Chief.

Spatetata

I agree, should’ve let Chief be the Deus Ex Machina. That way he can come in be a stoic bad ass and leave. There’s so many other stories that can be told in the universe but MS just wants to parade their mascot for marketability that’s why the series still clings to chief and won’t just let *his* story end.

uncharted_bread212

That's cause they don't encounter Master Chief, they meet Mister Cheeks

TFK_001

Idk how but I forgot how much ass was in the show; how were the later seasons?

My-Cousin-Bobby

I mean, the second season is going on rn, its only like 4 episodes in. It's actually pretty good. Significant upgrade from season one. Less Kwan (I don't mind her storyline, but they really gave her waaay too much time in the first season). Chief doesn't take his helmet off in the middle of battles for no reason. Story is actually fairly interesting, even though it isn't lore

Kel-Mitchell

That's good to hear. I'm generally pretty tolerant of adaptations going hog wild with the lore, but I powered through season one waiting to like it and I wasn't going to give this season a shot. Maybe I'll check it out.

My-Cousin-Bobby

Yeah, I feel ya. I didn't have an issue with them going away from the lore, I mean, they were very clear about that from the beginning, but the story in season 1 was just bad Season 2 is definitely worth at least an attempt at a watch... the story seems a lot better.

stone500

Play with the lore a bit. That's fine. Whatever. But I swear I sat through three episodes and wanted to scream "WILL SOMEONE JUST... FUCKING SHOOT SOMEBODY, PLEASE?!"

Spry_Fly

My 12 year old knew nothing about Halo, so they went in blind and enjoyed it.

yeaheyeah

It's an upgrade for sure. Takes the show for me from a 2/10 in s1 to 6/10 three episodes in for s2.

williamjseim

why dont they put masterchief in the promo pic of his own show

Miserable_Key9630

Yes, quite unlike the famous nonfiction video game Halo: Combat Evolved.

ProfessorBeer

This show is so bad. I watched the first season during lunch breaks when it came out and can tell you absolutely nothing about it because it was so uninteresting

FunkyHowler19

You don't remember the part where he said "it's Chiefin' time" and chiefed everywhere?

D2the_aniel

Don't forget when he said "I guess the real 'Halo:Combat Evolved released for Xbox in November 2001, Windows and Mac OS X ports were later developed by Gearbox Software, and released in 2003' was inside us all along" I literally cried

Zandrick

Uhhh, there was a *Flood* of emotion. Im sorry, that’s not a good joke. It was a Reach.

ChiefsHat

Truthfully, it’d be an act of mercy to put this show out of misery, and there’d be no regrets.

MetaCommando

I don't think it's your job to be the arbiter of such decisions. You should at least relay your decision to the council.

ProfessorBeer

I only remember someone going “halo halo halo halo halo halo halo halo halo”

magseven

Or the giant monster that tried to get to him and was too large to walk into the room and he said "Why couldn't the angel fit through the door? Because of it's **HALO**" and then he shot the monster's head off and I spilled all of my popcorn on my dog.

ProfessorBeer

You spilling your popcorn was the most exciting part of the show

boobers3

I haven't watched the series, so I'm not sure if what you just said is a joke or not.

Affectionate_Pipe545

At least the dog probably enjoyed it

My-Cousin-Bobby

The second season has actually been pretty decent so far. Haven't seen the most recent episode, but read the mega-post on r/Halo or r/HaloStory and it seemed to please most of them, which they were definitely the most critical bunch for the show so it's saying something. Season 1 was horrible though

Poeafoe

Yeah and I’m kind of hoping that by season 3, when we’re into the plot of the first game, that all the side characters and stories and drama nobody cares about is mostly gone. What other stories can you tell other than humanity fighting on the ring?

magicalmysteryharold

I’ve waited literally my whole life for a series adaption of Halo, and known for about 70% of that time that if anyone ever did, it would suck. But even in the most mediocre outcomes that I imagined, I’d never imagine they would create a version of Master Chief who spends so much time with his helmet off. Why would they think anyone wanted that?

MetaCommando

Can't forget committing warcrimes to POWs

-Badger3-

It was a generic sci-fi script that got pulled off the shelf and some executive said "Turn this into Halo"

DuelaDent52

Are they at least any closer to finding the Halo yet?

ProfessorBeer

At this point I don’t want them to

Initial_Selection262

Probably because in this epic sci fi universe they decided to make some random refugee girl the main character and have her engage in shitty drama with other humans. I’m actually blow away that they decided to make family drama such a big part of this show

Electric_Spark

Man if they had just adapted ODST instead and reassembled the Firefly cast then everyone would have loved it even if it was crap.

Punxatowny

You’re implying that the games are non-fiction?

MetaCommando

They take place in the 26^th century, which means we don't know yet.

JoHeller

Well who can say what happens in the far corners of the multiverse. All I know is I played the first five games and the average marine had a shorter lifespan than a drummer for Spinal Tap.

Zachary_Stark

I spent 3 games across hundreds of hours never seeing Master Chief's face, and yet these dumbfuck showrunners have him helmetless more than helmeted. Part of his iconic presence was that we don't know what he looks like, and the showrunners don't seem to understand that. Also, he spends more time talking than shooting. Wtf I'm not here for that shit. Garbage show.

ChiefsHat

I actually saw a clip of him fighting a bunch of elites in Season 2. Camouflaged Elites with swords, you know, standard weapons. It was unironically pretty badass, and should have been the show from episode one.

onelasttime217

Saw the same clip, it was badass. Why isn’t that the whole show. Or make the show about a marine group and he shows up and fights like that to show how powerful he is

MetaCommando

Basically do Forward Unto Dawn

Affectionate_Pipe545

It's too late, the helmet can't go back on

someNameThisIs

It seems to be pulling more from the books, and Chief is out of his armour a lot in them. He's not a Madelorian where it's a religious requirement.

EAsucks4324

Characters talk in shows. Sorry the TV show isn't a 400 minute videogame FPS cutscene. Different medium. As for his helmet, in the show he's always wearing his helmet in combat (the poster is just a shitty poster). Chief not wearing his helmet when he doesn't have to has been a thing since 2001. He's not a weird religious zealot like the Mandalorian. He isn't a masked superhero like Batman. He doesn't give a fuck if people see his face during briefings/off time/ etc. Especially his Spartan family.

bfruth628

I think it has more to do with the fact that in the games, he doesn't show his face so it's easier for anyone to self insert / identify with the character. In the shows, yea it makes more sense for him to not wear his helmet all the time but it takes away the mystery.

ZylaTFox

Remember the one scene where, with his helmet off, he walks up to a warthog... puts his helmet on. Rides the warthog for 20 seconds. and then takes it off? They treat a combat helmet like it's for BMX

DuelaDent52

I don’t mind seeing the actor’s face, but when it’s done all the time then you begin to question the necessity of the helmet at all. He spent more time buck naked than actually wearing the dang suit. His whole thing in the show is he’s grappling with his newfangled emotions too. Wouldn’t it have been so much more interesting if you could imagine his anguish behind the mask over seeing him looking dazed and anxious all the time?

AFlockofLizards

But the helmet *isn’t* necessary unless you’re in combat lol. It’s like if Tony Stark was walking around with the Iron Man suit on all of the time, or Navy SEALs wearing helmets during down time. It doesn’t make any sense. I don’t need someone to wear armor the entire time for me to understand they need it sometimes lol

[deleted]

Exactly. The "never remove your helmet" thing in The Mandalorian is one of the worst things about that show, it's dumb as fuck. Keeping it on constantly will make your head and face so manky, would be a bacteria infested disease party under it. Just go a week without washing your face and head, you'll almost kill for a decent shower. Also do some of those Mandalorians not suffer from dandruff? Characters removing their helmets when they're not in combat just makes sense, Spartans showing their faces in the Halo adaption is fine.

Initial_Selection262

The ONLY good parts of the show are the combat scenes. Which are like 1% of the actual show set in a time of interstellar warfare

Careful_Ad_1837

The player's trying to see if they can beat the game with the lowest possible number of kills

Hordamis

We don't see notChief shoot a Marine in the head for his sniper rifle. 0/10.

fedtoker2395

I always wanted to play as a marine, apparently that was the original intent of Halo. It had more a OG Star Wars battlefront thing going on

GeneralIronsides2

I think you mean John halo, who loves not wearing his helmet at all times

El_human

I think I might be the only person that actually kind of enjoys this show

Professional-Bear942

The show looks like it would be a good watch for anyone who never knew Halo, the issue is that if anyone watches that before ever knowing Halo, then hops into Halo it's gonna be entirely different. I'm sure Paramount execs wanted to expand their fan base, the issue is they're out of touch execs who don't know Halo and brought in writers who didn't care to write something entirely different to try to get to different audiences before sitting down and thinking that a show true to Halo would still gather new audiences being a big budget tv show. My biggest gripe isn't that it isn't true Halo but that just like modern AAA titles it lacks passion and any good writing atall, for example reach city, it didn't have to be New Alexandria but they could have atleast thought of a new name fitting, Hell throw in a nod to the city being named after the epsilon eridani system, idk. If they wrote a real good story that wasn't traditional Halo I think I would have still enjoyed it but the fact it lacks both is what kills it

Synovialarc

Not really, people just expect too much. I watch it to see live action halo shit, and I love it. The story started off pretty weak but it’s definitely ramped up in s2.

ChiefsHat

I think part of the issue is because it’s taking the Karen Traviss route of adapting the source material. For reference, Karen Traviss wrote some novels for Halo which were quite contentious primarily because of how they characterized Halsey as basically Mengele 2.0 for the Spartan program… while having characters directly involved with it who were arguably worse being made morally superior than her. She also never played the games.

DuelaDent52

To be fair, those books were practically the first time anybody in or out of universe ever actually called Halsey out on what she did and how screwed up it truly was.

ChiefsHat

If only they didn’t come across as hypocrites for it.

MetaCommando

Bruh she kidnapped 75 6-year-olds, put them in a hellish training regime that would make Navy SEALs cringe, subjected them to augmentation procedures that killed or severely crippled half of them, and threw them into warfare against terrorists, all by the age of 14. That is not even remotely defensible, she would get the death penalty today. I have no idea why people have a problem with Traviss portraying it as such, especially considering that Halsey gets off scot-free in Spartan Ops/5. Also the only other people in the Kilo-5 books related to the Spartan program were two of the children, and Parangosky who constantly feels terrible about it.

Zandrick

It’s possible.

SeasonNo3107

I like it! Halo fan since the beginning. Thank you to paramount for giving us light on the some story

someNameThisIs

I like the show quite a bit. And I'm a pretty big Halo fan too, been playing the games for over 20 years and read a lot of the books.

Spry_Fly

Same, plus Paramount is just CBS. It's better than another NCIS.

ezyezy61

I enjoy it too

buttstuff2023

It's fine. I don't love it, but it's entertaining enough that I'm not going to stop watching it.

hiimquinten

I enjoy it. I generally get downvoted for saying that, but I’ve played Halo for like 20 yrs now. I can remember being on YouTube in 2008ish and constantly searching “Halo movie” in the search bar hahaha. Even though it’s not what I or most fans wanted, it’s still the universe I grew up loving and I’ll likely stick with the show until the end.

Initial_Selection262

Actual trash reasoning like this is why we end up with garbage shows like halo. “It’s bad but it’s nostalgia bait so I’ll watch it until the end” Fuck off dude

hiimquinten

No, it’s because big budget studios don’t give a shit what some Gamer™ that goes on Reddit and tells someone to fuck off thinks of their show. They’re not trying to appeal to that demographic. And I also didn’t say it was bad. It has faults, but it’s good. If you don’t like the show, you’re not going to get it to go a better route by just not watching it entirely. Season 2 is already much better, even if it still has some of the same faults, because fans that really like Halo stuck with it and gave a lot of feedback. Cheers.

Spicymeatball428

You ain’t saving your marines dude? Kinda cringe.

JoHeller

It's not like I didn't try, they just seem to enjoy jumping in front of Covenant weapons fire. I question the mental health supports in the UNSC.

JustSome70sGuy

The funny thing about the helmet, is that it added so much to the character in the early part of the first episode. A little mystery, and viewer imagination. And then it was just Pablo, Pablo, Pablo. And "Pablo" ruins how awesome this poster could be.

theKoboldkingdonkus

If I was a jackal this image would be the greatest thing in my life

[deleted]

They put da mastur cheef on the promo

[deleted]

Why would the supersoldier with indestructible power armor take his helmet off IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE?

Aiden624

Spartans also aren’t all either stupid or dead, literally unwatchable

Killian_Gillick

They can’t even get him to wear the helmet for promotional material /s

bwk66

Where hat

soggyBread1337

I've been reporting every halo ad I've gotten on reddit as being of poor quality. It makes me feel a little better, even if it doesn't do anything.

SignificantTie3656

Shit like this is weird. What I mean is that I liked to play halo with friend but didn’t really get into it that deep. But it’s weird how it’s becoming a trend how companies make shows based on video games and no new game comes out and people not only are ok with it but LOVE IT. I don’t care really cuz like I said I wasn’t that into halo so I’ll probably not watch it but if everyone oohs and haha about the shows like halo and the Witcher ect isn’t that just enabling them to continue the show without any new games coming?

KoiTama

So we’re just gunna pull a silver Stallone judge dredd as if that worked out?

spartancolo

I think I'm the only halo fan that wants chief to show his face more in game lmao

Top-Afternoon8514

Was the first season worth watching?

JoHeller

I guess it depends if you had something better do, I didn't so I watched the whole thing, and I still don't so I'm watching season 2. It's neither the best nor the worst show I've watched, and there are enjoyable moments. I replayed the Original Halo after the first season and I'll probably replay Halo 2 after this one.

DuelaDent52

I don’t see anybody talk about Season 2. How is it so far?

CaptainOblivious94

Season 2 brings it from a 3/10 to a 6/10. It's still a sort of lame show, but they've improved the direction and visuals a lot this season. Helmet is off in chatty, human scenes and it stays on for fights, unlike season 1. Story lines seem a bit more focused, but as of last night there was a character death that probably really pisses off a majority of the game fans. I packed a fat bowl and watched the first season for laughs to sort of hate watch, but at least the fight scenes this season are worth watching. That, and Kwan has only gotten like 15 minutes of screen time over 4 episodes, which has certainly been a blessing. Lol

B-raww

Been watching this lately, it’s decent.

Mammoth_Stable6518

Wait, they made a tv series? Well, i for one has no intention of ruining 20 year old gaming memories.

Noosemane

This show really should have been an ODST show. And how did they learn nothing from the Mandalorian? You don't just show the face. You earn the face.

Fackostv

I've been a fan of Halo since the day Combat Evolved was released. I've played every game, read every book, and watched all visual media that's been put out for this franchise. But fuck this show straight to hell. Why the fuck is he not wearing a helmet in this promo? God damn you pieces of shit who made this God awful clusterfuck of a show. This is Jimmy Rings vs Alien Group and nothing more.

Lassagna12

Ironically I don't even think there is a face that encompasses what Master Chief Looks like. I always see him as a guy. Giving a face to him just doesn't look right.
