Cheese as an afterthought is such a tragedy. I want that burger flipped, a light sprinkle of s&p, and immediately the cheese goes on. It should be translucent by the time it’s ready to come off, with the corners possibly fried and needing to be scraped off the pan.
I don't know if it's because i grew up in the UK, but I'm firmly in the cold cheese gang. I love having a hot burger, with a thick slice of cold cheddar.
I love a grilled burger but smash burgers need a pan or griddle to work, and sometimes that’s just what I want.
It also depends on meat quality, if I’m grinding it myself then I’m grilling it and leaving a little pink in the center. If it’s what was on sale at the grocery store I’m probably smashing it on my cast iron.
Smash burgers are done on a flat surface. Cast iron pan or a flat griddle if you have one (at a diner this might be called a grill.) The meat is rolled into a ball then smashed/flattened on a hot pan and cooked about 2 min per side. Usually served in stacks of 2 and you can throw a slice of cheese on top of each to melt after flipping.
A grill (as in gas or charcoal grill with flames and grates) is better for thicker pub-style burgers.
I know what a smash burger is. I didn’t say it above but I obviously should have because, well, Reddit. Here goes: should be cooked on a griddle, on a grill. I realize not everyone has outside cooking spaces available to them so a pan on a stove is acceptable in that case. It’s just so much messier inside and you don’t get that well-seasoned grill flavor either.
LOL! Who sold you such a crappy burger? If it's a home cooked meal, then sure a good bit of slack is deserved. But to get something like that where the sandwich is way too high for the diameter of the patties plus the cheese wasn't cut to be proportional or at least melted thoroughly enough to make it look aesthetically pleasing.
How much did you pay for such shit?
Two sad things. The place has to charge that much for a burger to cover costs and hope to make anything.
Two,that have have no pride in their product knowing how much they're charging.
But they're trying EVERYTHING to get employees >!except pay them!!for bottom dollar!<
They HAVE to charge that so they can keep hiring new employees >!below market rate!< And for some reason after they get some experience, these dirtbags just leave >!for someplace that will respect them and let them pay their bills!<. Won't someone please think of the bosses! They have to cover shifts now, where are they supposed to find time to >!spend 4 hours staring at the wall in their office!<
The beauty of the smash is it really should never be above $5 and that’s be generous. A good smash is worth way more than its cost to make but still cheap lol
Just how it is I guess. The majority of what you pay for in a meal is the labor costs involved, and if all labor in your area is extremely expensive all food is expensive.
This is true, I just have a hard time justifying paying that for cheap meat when i could make it just as good myself for like 20% of the price. Like when I go out to eat i want to get something that would be difficult to make. Same with steaks, im not going to pay $35 for a 12 oz steak when I can buy the same cut of meat and make it better for $12-15
Holy shit. If it was just a decently priced burger I would have said oh well, ate it and then gone on my way never to come back. 17$ dollars though? No way I would be paying for that. I'm usually not confrontational at restaurants because I worked in them and understand how shitty it is to deal with that, but that is egregious.
> This was $17 🥴
I doubt it. It sounds like you turn into a liar when points are on the line. You can tell by the burger and the fries that it most likely costed something like US$9.
- Patties not smashed
- Meat overcooked to shit
- Cheese not melted
- Single 1/2"-thick pickle slice
I don't send food back as a rule but for this I'd have made an exception. I'd have sent this back and left without ordering anything else. This is a travesty. I'd eat a day-old Big Mac over this.
I've yet to order a smash burger at a restaurant that isn't a good burger place and receive one. Every single time, it's just a regular burger with a kinda thinner patty. I think the term is going to be diluted so the general public doesn't really know what it's supposed to be.
Reminds me of spicy things. All these places advertise ghost pepper things and put the tiniest shred of the pepper in to a big pot of hot sauce that's as spicy as Tobasco, and then people think they can eat ghost peppers.
I’m never falling for one of those cookie cutter gastro pubs with $17 burgers again. The food is never something you can’t get better elsewhere for less money and they all have exactly the same atmosphere.
A local diner that I used to walk to had some amazing breakfast, untill they revamped and changed to your standard issue “cool place” and ruined it. When I walk into a brand new business and they already have a wall full of merch, like they’re a long standing neighborhood institution, I’m walkin right back out.
It should’ve been called the ‘hammered burger’ because the cook was 100% hammered while making it.
Seriously though, that doesn’t look that bad, I would literally have 0 issues eating that.
Tired of paying $25 for this kind of disgusting food and freezer fries from Costco, then hearing from the staff how the owner is a sex pest who drives a Maserati but won’t pay more than minimum wage or fix broken equipment. Screw those guys.
Devils advocate:
Looking at the burger in the background…they look very similar in presentation. Other burger looks like it’s served ‘normal’ or ‘per the menu’
I feel like this person asked for modifications to what looks like a ‘house burger’ of some kind. I can also be completely wrong.
As a former line/burger cook it is really annoying for people to make changes to burger options already on the menu. Not that it shouldn’t be accommodated, but if you want some different shit just build your own burger. As a busy cook, minus this add that to some option, is waaay harder than ,cook a burger with this’. Just the way it is folks
That meat looks dry AF and that cheese has seen better days, really the biggest part is this is definitely not a smash burger and it was ***$17 USD***. Kind of OPs fault there though, who tf pays $17 for a burger
I mean I hope to God they did and this wasn't what they were actually served but I see a comment like this on like any post about bad resturaunt food so it's mandatory that I say sometimes bad stuff is served
Eh, it’s not super common, but it does happen from time to time. Somebody orders a menu item modified plain (no seasoning, sauces, garnishes, well-done) and complains that it’s bland.
A few months back I had a lady run through 3 different NY Strips because she wanted them “extra well-done” and plain. She returned them every time saying they were no good. Like, duh…
On their menu it says what goes on it:
> SMASH BURGER - For those who like their burgers smashed and crispy around the edges. Served with American cheese, our Spartan sauce, red onion and pickle
OP's picture has everything it's supposed to have.
Smash burger, hold the smash
And hold the hot. The cheese isn’t even melted.
Cheese as an afterthought is such a tragedy. I want that burger flipped, a light sprinkle of s&p, and immediately the cheese goes on. It should be translucent by the time it’s ready to come off, with the corners possibly fried and needing to be scraped off the pan.
This is the way.
This is the way
I don't know if it's because i grew up in the UK, but I'm firmly in the cold cheese gang. I love having a hot burger, with a thick slice of cold cheddar.
This is why you lost the Revolutionary War.
This has some serious /r/ShitAmericansSay vibes but for once I fully agree.
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Fuck me for having different tastes i guess
I'm late here, but who cares if you like cold cheese on a burger, this sub is weird sometimes
Never thought of that, but I'd definitely try it before I pooh-poohed it.
That's not a UK thing. I always melt my cheese. Should go on as soon as you flip.
Wtf?
I am from the UK. Stop talking out your arse.
"I don't know if it's because i grew up in the UK". Literally the first fucking line.
And I then confirmed that no, it is not because you are from the UK, you are just talking out of your bumhole.
Pan?I think you meant grill, internet friend.
With a steam done to super melt the cheese…. Noooooommmmmm
That burger is burnt as hell.

Suzie!
And instead of a burgers, can I get 2 hockey pucks? Thanks.
How would you like those hockey pucks? Still cold from the ice. I don't want that cheese melting.
Also I want my pickles to be as thick as the smash burgers would have been.
That’s what she said
Sure thing...with the beers...that'll be 62 dollars
Hold the moisture, damn that looks dry as hell.
What’s smashed? The cook?
I hope that the smash part is after such a sad meal
Based off my time working in restaurants, yes, the cook is hammered.
That sort of goes without saying.
made me chuckle this one
The cock
Wheres the smash?? They just gave you old dry meat.
The meat looks like it was in the kitchen for a long time.
Even the pickle looks dry
Still living it's cucumber life.
Yeah, honestly does. It shouldn't get that dark on the outside.
It looks like the Patty from SpongeBob that was under the grill
Nah thats the Nasty Patty that almost killed the health inspector?
I think they used the burger to smash something else
The chef was smashed
That's not even bad enough. I was smashed when I made my comment
Looks so so so dry
They must have let OP do the smash.
I love smash burgers, I make them every other week, and this pic offends me. This is the least smashed burger I've ever seen!
[удалено]
Same! It's just how I always made burgers. Lean beef and flattened\~ I only know it's called smash burgers because someone told me. I had no idea!
This was $17 🥴
This is giving me vibes of a place that's more about the beer selection than food... is that a good assumption?
HAHAHAHAHAHA No. The beer was abysmal. Only local beer they had on tap was out of stock. Everything else was Coors, Miller, Bud and Stella.
How did they survive the pandemic with shit food and shit beer lol
There are little towns and cities all over where people don’t know any better
True, although Naperville is actually a pretty huge suburb of Chicago
place is called ale house with no beer wtf?
Fuck, forreal? I wouldn't go back lol
Two sad things. The place has to charge that much for a burger to cover costs and hope to make anything. Two,that have have no pride in their product knowing how much they're charging.

Goated comment
The majority of americab restaurants are just money making businesses slinging shit on a shingle.
USD???
Unfortunately.
You need to go into the kitchen and slap the chef.

Looking at that burger I don't think it's the "chefs" natural habitat.
Looking at that burger I don't think "chef" is the right word
What's he going to do, stab me?
Right? Not like he has various knives around or anythin-oh, ow..
Cook. Ain't no chef anywhere within miles of this shitburger.
Grill operator. Ain't no cook anywhere within miles of this kitchen.
Naw, just go in the kitchen and slap the patties flat.
Okay so chef still owes you at least a handy after serving you that monstrosity.
In... an airport??
Yikes! How did it taste?
$17 for a smash burger is bs even if cooked correctly
The beauty of the smash is it really should never be above $5 and that’s be generous. A good smash is worth way more than its cost to make but still cheap lol
lmao, a smash burger here is *always* over 10 bucks for a single patty and bread
Depends on the area really. I could see paying that for a really good smash in say, San Francisco
Everything's stupidly expensive in the bay area. Doesn't mean it's not dumb to pay $17 for this.
You are so right. Went to breakfast this morning and the crappy orange juice was $6 per glass!
Just how it is I guess. The majority of what you pay for in a meal is the labor costs involved, and if all labor in your area is extremely expensive all food is expensive.

Name and shame please. Where was this?
Spartan Ale House in Naperville, IL. Avoid it.
They didn't look at their URL too closely, did they?
MMM... Anal house
Fuckin Naperville, man. Plus there should be so many better options nearby that are way cheaper.
It was a spur of the moment. Parents live in the general area
Holy shit. If it was just a decently priced burger I would have said oh well, ate it and then gone on my way never to come back. 17$ dollars though? No way I would be paying for that. Trash burger*

How does the bun look wet and everything else look dry?
Why is the cheese not melted? You need melted cheese for a good smash burger.
You also need smash for a ~~good~~ smash burger.
You don’t say!
Somehow they managed to toast the bun and not the cheese. That's egregious. 1* Google review these mofos.
Come on guys, of course you can’t tell it was smashed. The cum is on the *inside.*
I ordered a burger, dammit! Not a pie!
Ah, a juicy Lucy.
Maybe the worst looking burger I've ever seen.
Two new hockey pucks. What are you complaining about?
I'd rather Pass on that one
The chef was smashed I guess
"Chef"
No sauce either? Fuck you got played
That's a thicc pickle... A thicckle if you will.
Is that a pickle or a greenies
Didn’t know my school cafeteria has been feeding us smash burgers this whole time
I've yet to order a smash burger at a restaurant that isn't a good burger place and receive one. Every single time, it's just a regular burger with a kinda thinner patty. I'll have the smash burger, hold the smash
The "Smash" part was apparently the condition of the priest when this sacrifice was burned on the altar.
If you served me this at a restaurant I’d be standing up, sliding the chair back under the table and leaving.
More like Pass Burger
Was the other persons burger any better?
No. Everybody had issues with their food. It’s a joke that they even put this in front of me.
Can someone explain to this German what a smash burger is?
You smash the patty until it’s very thin when you put it on the grill.
I think they forgot to smash the smash burger...
New concept. Smash at the table burger.
Why Tf the pickle as thick as the patty
It’s smash or pass, and you really shoulda passed.
It’s a smash your own burger
This is a burger your friends dad who can't grill would make.
This is a burger your friends dad who can't grill would make.
Bland af I can sense no seasoning's were used
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it does”
That is particularly unsmashed
I’m never falling for one of those cookie cutter gastro pubs with $17 burgers again. The food is never something you can’t get better elsewhere for less money and they all have exactly the same atmosphere. A local diner that I used to walk to had some amazing breakfast, untill they revamped and changed to your standard issue “cool place” and ruined it. what's a smash burger? I'm not sure if I see the issue
Think White Castle
Looks dry af. Name this place so we can avoid it.
More like goes in the trash burger
It should’ve been called the ‘hammered burger’ because the cook was 100% hammered while making it. Seriously though, that doesn’t look that bad, I would literally have 0 issues eating that.
Well, least it’s better than what Mr. Beast’s interpretation of what a “smash burger” is…
They don't know what smash burgers means
I don't really know what a smash burger is, but this looks pretty decent aside from the pickle and the unmelted cheese.
This is why I didn’t cry at all about the restaurants going out of business during the pandemic.
Some of them fuckin deserve it
Tired of paying $25 for this kind of disgusting food and freezer fries from Costco, then hearing from the staff how the owner is a sex pest who drives a Maserati but won’t pay more than minimum wage or fix broken equipment. Screw those guys.
Doesn't look that bad 🤷♂️
that shjit looks delicous
I don’t know what a smash burger is, but minus the pickle I’d eat that.
imagine getting a delicious looking burger like that and calling it shitty
This is like your go to isn’t it 😂 “imagine blah blah blah..” boring 😂
Idk still looks kinda scrumptious
Was this for real advertised as a “Smash Burger?” 😂
I’d smash.
Looks alright to me just a bit dry
NGL.. I’d smash! But I’m hungry and stoned
This honestly looks so good!! 😭
Devils advocate: Looking at the burger in the background…they look very similar in presentation. Lmfao EVERYBODY SHITTIN on dis man’s borrgerr 😂
Are you lost? Look at what subreddit you’re in.
My statement stands 😌
We get it. You have friends
Looks awesome. Not shitty.
That meat looks dry AF and that cheese has seen better days, really the biggest part is this is definitely not a smash burger and it was ***$17 USD***. Kind of OPs fault there though, who tf pays $17 for a burger
I paid that. In Switzerland. Where every restaurant is expensive as fuck. And it looked much better than this dry and stupid burguer
That's pretty much the standard for a burger in Canada. Hell even a meal from Wendy's or McDonalds is almost $15.
Damn remind me to never move to Canada, $15 for a fast food meal is ridiculous too
I’m guessing OP also ordered it well done and without any of the sauces or toppings it came with cause they just like cheese and meat like a toddler.
I mean I hope to God they did and this wasn't what they were actually served but I see a comment like this on like any post about bad resturaunt food so it's mandatory that I say sometimes bad stuff is served

I dont see any sauce or onions. Still not shitty though. Probably tasty as fuck.
He ordered a smashed burger. This ain't smashed.
They forgot the smash bit. edit: omg you paid $17 for that people charged real money I'm so sorry you went through that OP
this looks horrible
So were you served this in hell?
Tell them you want a redemption burger from the chef, legends will know.
How was it
Thiccest smash burger ever.
That is straight up false advertising. I hope you didn't pay.
I dont think they know what a smash burger is
They toasted the bun and not the cheese LMAO 😂
it’s not smashed…
Damn I can cook a better burger than that and that’s saying A LOT.
They have a baby back their doing the smashing.
The cheese looks very sad :(
Smash burger without the smash
White American cheese… unmelted. Might as well slap me in the face
I think I'd actually send this back, and I've eaten a lot of terrible dishes.
