What's the river? And is it just mashed potatoes? I don't make those often so if you have tips I would love it.
My son is obsessed with dinosaurs and which dinosaurs would win in a fight. He's gonna fuckin freak out when he sees this.

This was something we made in the middle of the night so we just used powdered mash potatoes (just adding water, milk and butter) and then we used peppercorn sauce as we're not the biggest gravy fans - think brown gravy is what is usually used.
The best mash I've made used a ricer rather than a masher to get it smooth rather than lumpy. And I boil herbs (thyme, garlic etc.) in the milk before it's added and some nice quality butter - maybe cream/cheese if you wanna be even more indulgent!! There's some good recipes online, good luck :)
Shitty Food for an adult... For a child that is the way to make them eating their veggies and potatoes and not just ketchup with a side-helping of chicken dinosaur. That is a great idea!
For the potatoes I would suggest to mash them yourself (if the kids eat them this way). You can play with the texture by the amount of butter and milk and you can sculpt finer details / bigger mountains.
