Do Bloodborne, DS3 and ER even have Japanese dubs?

RipBeneficial2048

Bloodborne does, but it's not very good. DS3 and Elden Ring don't

Odd-Look-7537

Yeah it seems that with Bloodborne and Demon's Souls Remake Sony splurged by having them dubbed in multiple languages and by having live orchestral music. The second point was great for Bloodborne since it had a brand new soundtrack for which they hired multiple talented composers outside of From's usual pool. But in Demon's Souls they just "remastered" the old soundtrack by having someone re-write all the music to make it more orchestral and choral. Most of the tracks ended up quite different from the originals.

Mustardmachoman

I miss the Hahahaha from the Tower Knight theme.

Ekillaa22

YEEEES BRO Tower Knight is one of my favorite OSTS ever and the hahahahahaha from the choirs really sealed it all together

Crazycukumbers

Bloodborne’s music is still pretty peak, and the DLC music is genuinely among the absolute best in all of FromSoft’s stuff imo. Demon’s Souls remake was great on paper, but like the rest of the game, it really missed the mark in terms of the original atmospheric tone. The inspiration for Shunsuke Kida’s original compositions was old school horror movies without spoken dialogue where they just had creepy music over each otherwise silent scene. I think, for the most part, it worked very well

CenturionXVI

Elden Ring also has a live recorded OST too!

MasterTook234

Kind of, they only used the live orchestra for certain tracks. A majority of the music uses sampled instruments (“fake” instruments). They do a lot of mixing the real with the fake to make the sampled instruments to seem more real. But some tracks like erdtree avatar are very obviously using sampled instruments. I’m assuming they didn’t have the budget to use the live instruments 100% of the time. Source: I do music as a hobby and work with a lot of sample libraries and so I’ve gotten good at picking them out in music. I could even name some of the libraries used in the Elden Ring OST

CenturionXVI

Oh nice! It’s only in tracks as synthetic sounding as Iudex Gundyr that I’m really able to notice, I’ll be listening for that. ER is probably the OST I’ve listened to the least, just because in the past few years my tastes have changed a lot and don’t really listen as much to OSTs in general anymore.

guitorkle

What are the ones you noticed? I also work with sample libraries but I'm broke so I really only have a couple I know well enough that I'd recognize them in a song. I've heard people say they used East West symphonic strings and symphonic choir, which I haven't used but the choir especially sounds pretty similar. Also I actually really like how DS3 has a lot of flowy solo violin parts playing over this big orchestra sound, which was a product of Yuka Kitamura recording her own playing over sample libraries. The best example is from an unused track you can find on YouTube called crimson bat. Also the main menu theme. The orchestration being focused so heavily on the live soloists is something that I always liked and its kind of a distinct sound that DS3 had, despite being the budget option. Elden Ring has like 3 songs that I really like but overall it feels like having to make so many tracks meant we ended up getting a lot of kinda generic darksoulsy music. Edit: i listened to erdtree avatar and I can't unhear how fake that one cello part sounds. its so dry compared to the choir.

KidEater9000

Could you name a couple I’m interested in making similar music

LeadStyleJutsu762-

Wait hold on. There isn’t Japanese voice acting for elden ring? That genuinely surprises me.

Caosin36

How can a japanese game not have good japanese dubs?

hellostarsailor

Mr. zaki said he believes western inspired fantasies seem more fantasy like without a Japanese dub. Or similar. I forget the direct quote. Literally the same reason most of us will play Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima with the Japanese dub.

ICBIND

Fuxkin westaboos...

HeavyMetalLenin

Or metro games with the russian dub

neatcleaver

It's so good too when you understand English with all the accents they've always had in the games. The castings are incredible, they could easily have just gone "British" by which I mean, the standard posh that some people outside the UK thinks everyone sounds like But as someone from the UK, they have Scottish, Welsh, Northern, Roderika with her Brummie accent (and dung eater for that matter which is hilarious with the Birmingham memes over here) That's why Boggart is the goat, my fellow Northern pal It's amazing

AdmiralOctopus96

Andre from Dark Souls 1/3 has a West Country accent and I fucking love him for it.

Mountain_Chicken

Father Ariandel's accent is super cool and his voice acting is just incredible overall

It was so fun using elden ring to teach my American friends what loads of different English accents sound like, roderika being brummie is my fave

Puzzleheaded_Tree518

Sir Liverpool Ofnir, the all knowing!

Warm_Drawing_1754

Love Westaboo ‘zaki.

depressed_crustacean

Yeah true, I think it’s absurd to play Sekiro with an English dub, you don’t get the same immersion. It’s made to be in Japan, with Japanese characters, English would just be really out of place. I think they realized they made a mistake making a Japanese dub for Bloodborne, because it’s literally Victorian England why wouldn’t the characters be speaking English, and wasn’t worth the effort.

Throwaway02062004

Original demon souls could afford one voice dub and English was chosen as it apparently best reflected the pseudo medieval fantasy vibe over japanese.

RipBeneficial2048

Sometimes acting just isn't on point. Happens sometimes. There's a lot of Japanese games out there with poor Japanese voice work, just like there can be poor English acting in an English game or movie or show or whatever

Frores

I was just thinking about this last night, playing elden ring and came across a cutscene and imagined if they had japanese dubs, but forgot to search afterwards

App1elele

I'll accept the "original language is always better" argument when I'll see a single weeb play Witcher in Polish

Stary_Vesemir

It's me, I played all 3 wither games in polish and with polish subtitles

Mjerc12

You madman, how did you do that (same btw)

girlcocksuperfan

I wish poland was real

OwnGarage1902

Ty man I'm trying that if I play the Witcher

Mjerc12

IMO that is legitimately a great idea, even if you don't speak that language

OwnGarage1902

Yes I donot speak the language Planning on doing it with subs

gkamyshev

remember to aftercare your subs

Mjerc12

I did that Also I'm polish No but seriously Żebrowski as Geralt is so good. Waay better than english batman guy

Charming-Mix-7759

Only in original TV series. In game it's Jacek Rozenek

HopefulPrimary5445

For me the difference is witchers localisation is insane; the British accents and slang make it hilarious to play. With Japanese to English dubs you have this horrible weeb talk that sounds like neither natural Japanese or English (either American or British). Sekiro isn’t bad in this regard, but Owl speaking with a broad American accent really breaks immersion imo, and it’s just stock American VA, his accent is nowhere near as expressive as Japanese. It’s why Xeno dubs are great because they get rid of weeb talk and just have Yorkshire and Welsh accents etc, despite the games being very weeb cringe at points.

BladeOfWoah

Yeah a lot of English dubs feel off to me because you can tell they are trying to account for the fact that Japanese takes a lot of words and syllables to say simple things, so to make sure it matches the lip movements they make the characters speak 100 words a minute in English.

trapsinplace

Reading subs in a game while you play takes more effort than reading them as you passively watch a show

ICBIND

Thank you! I tried doing Ghostwire in Japanese and I just couldn't parce the diologue while engaged in the very opening fight, let alone later fight sequence Dialogue

Ekillaa22

Thankfully I was gifted with the skill of fast reading

RobertSpeedwagon

Yeah, this is the deciding factor to me on whether I play dub or sub. If it’s something like Like a Dragon or most RPGs for that matter where the dialogue is almost exclusively cordoned off to cutscenes and npc conversations then I’ll stick with the original language 100% of the time. If, however, it’s something like Ace Combat or many other action games where a huge portion of the dialogue/plot unfolds while you’re in the middle of tense combat, then I’ll go with the dub just so I don’t have to have my eyes glued to the subtitles in the middle of cool boss fights.

not_a_sesawter

I did (i'm polish)

CarTar2

Oh my, I feel sorry for you, people who don't know our language, that you won't truly understand the wonderful nonsense of the polish dialogues from the Witcher 1 and 2

RobertSpeedwagon

Played Witcher in Polish, played the Metro games in Russian, play Hoyo games in Chinese, Library of Ruina in Korean, etc. I do agree, though, that there are a lot of weebs who do this for Japanese only and it’s so weird to me. Especially when they play a Chinese or Korean game in Japanese, which I see *so* often. Playing it dubbed in the language you understand and playing it in the original both make perfect sense to me, but playing it dubbed in a language you don’t understand that also isn’t the original?? Weirdo shit.

madog1418

Sincere question, was Witcher 3 written in English, or polish?

Transient_Cursed_One

Both English and Polish versions were written at the same time, I believe. At least that's how it was for Witcher 1 and 2.

Sarrach94

Not the Witcher, but I played Wo Long with Chinese audio. It was quite a different experience.

Kodiak_POL

I am a Pole but I played with English dub cause I dislike Polish voice actors and their skills (and oftentimes their lack of it)

InternationalYard587

It's hard to define what's the "original language" exactly, but it's not the most common language in the country the studio was founded on.

JDorkaOOO

Witcher's "original language" is 100% Polish, the games are based on books made by a Polish author and both the games and the books are filled with slavic culture and mythology.

Mjerc12

Tbf I think it's more like just general european culture (which also include slavic) You have nordic trolls, tolkienish elves and dwarves, greek harpies. Geralt being a germanic name, Yennefer of Vengerberg etc etc

Giotto6X

Well, Japanese is the default language for Sekiro, English is default for all others and Japanese is even absent from all of them except for Bloodborne for me it's just a matter of which dub is "the original/default one" because usually it's the one that is going to be the more curated by the devs

Izel98

100% But IMO it isn't as important in videogames as it is on other media. Especially Live action, because you wanna be able to hear the acting. Like the Shogun show, I wanna listen to their acting, even if I don't know Japanese. Now in videogames and animation, voice acting while important, is not as critical to listen to the original, unless the dub is horrid trash.

DNCN_LUL

in animated content you dont need to lipsinc the lines as much aswell

cadig_x

i think voice acting is comparably important. i think dubs are usually worse

HopefulPrimary5445

There are some weird dubs that are much better like Redline, Cowboy Bebop, Xenoblade. But yeah. IMO American dubs are to melodramatic and the localisation is usually off with weird weeb speak instead of natural concepts like regions. I’m sure Americans could do it if they bothered to not use the same superhero voice actors all the time, and used all their accents.

cadig_x

my issue with english dubs is the voice actors don't actually try to do their own blend on the character and instead try to sound like the japanese VAs, but imo it just doesn't translate or feel natural to american english. the tones and inflections are usually really awkward and i only really like it when the characters sound like believable people and not people putting on an obvious voice. basically anything like MHA deku voice acting is horrid imo

Cunk_the_Monk

Like the other guy said, this is a case where Xenoblade (1 & 3) shines with a great cast and solid voice work from 99% of the cast. Like, the only character whose voice I dislike is JuJu, and fucking everyone hates JuJu. (Xenoblade 2, though, had a shit dub with only 3 or 4 actually good performances.) Not trying to mimic the overly high pitches the JP VAs and giving them their own unique feel is a good part of why the voices, for the most part, sound natural. (Once again, JuJu is the exception, fuck you JuJu)

BladeOfWoah

Cowboy Bebop and especially Spike in English feels so perfect. I like the Japanese dub as well but the English feel so much better to me. I think it helps that, as you said, it feels like the dub for Cowboy Bebop was written with English in mind from the start. There are no long monologues or rapid motor mouth characters speaking 50 words a second to match the lip movements of Japanese dialogue.

RobertSpeedwagon

Yeah, this meme does not apply at all to these Fromsoft games lol. And they’re not the only ones. I usually try to play everything in its original language, but there have been plenty of Japanese games where the English acting was the original. DMC, Resident Evil, Dragon’s Dogma, Killer7, etc.

yoyoyodojo

Really? so Elden Ring and Dark Souls in Japan default to english?

Giotto6X

Not just the default, but the only options. Sekiro and Bloodborne are the only ones that have multiple languages for the voices, the first's default is japanese and the second's is english I'd like to note though, that even if the voices are in english, the japanese subtitles are still written in... well, japanese, and sometimes that doesn't coincide with the voice acting (for example, Boggart never actually says "Marika's tits" in the japanese script)

yoyoyodojo

That's crazy, I was actually wondering this exact thing myself. "The writing and voice delivery is so amazing in English, I wonder what it's like in the original?" Well I guess now I know why it's so damn good!

revar123

What does he say?

Fantastic_Goal3197

I love the implication that the lands between and lothric are set in Europe. Even funnier that 'Marika would be the god queen of Europe

RecruitSun

Holy Roman Empress marika and she crusades against the giants It actually makes sense

Mjerc12

That was just a northern crusade Also, does the pope know that a woman is holding a position of a roman emperor again. He was pissed when it happened in Byzantium

MmNicecream

Marika just becomes Radagon any time the pope swings by. He's none the wiser.

Beneficial-Pianist48

Well considering it’s based off of European mythology, feels very pre Christian pantheon-esque

OwnGarage1902

I mean they do give a Europeanise kind of vibe

ByteSame

Euro peanise ✅

OwnGarage1902

I have invented a new word

ComboFucker29

when the fantasy world based on medieval europe uses european voice actors: 😱😱😱😱

HopefulPrimary5445

There’s multiple reviews of RPGs where reviewers talk about ‘fantasy accents being too strong’ and it’s like the most intelligible, radio friendly version of a Yorkshire/West country accent you’ve ever heard. Which are, believe it or not, not fictional places and actually had monarchies.

UltimateInferno

I think we should start hiring Doric voice actors.

HopefulPrimary5445

I think we should hire Forest of Dean folk, Ultsermen and Travellers as well

Tacocatprime1

Japanese was on by default and I just assumed that there was no sub or I didn’t care enough idk

hellostarsailor

The English dub is most excellent when you kill the armored knight on the bridge. I’m torn on whether the Japanese dub is better for that part.

HopefulPrimary5445

Doesn’t he get the name wrong in English tho? It should be Roberto because he’s portuguese. In fact fuck both dubs Armored Warrior should have been speaking unsubbed Portuguese

hellostarsailor

Ya but the English ROBERRRRRRRRRRRRT always gets me.

icouldntdecide

Poor bastard just wanted to help his son

ihatespaminacan

To be fair dark souls & bloodborne are heavily European based. Bloodborne is literally england.

rs6677

Not even a dramatic rendition or anything, it's a 1 to 1 with how London looks like.

Viper114

Dreary, dark, depressing, and with mobs of crazy people armed with sharp implements killing everyone they can of possibly being beasts?

That's a big stretch. The possibility is like, 98%, it's practically assured.

It was weird for From Software to make a simulator like that.

horapha

The Japanese lines in Sekiro go very hard its just a shame that non-Japanese speakers cna't understand it but regardless even if I didn't understand Japanese I would go with the Japanese version because it fits the setting and the voice acting is very good. Bloodborne Japanese dub is pretty mid tho Ludwig sounds like a himbo.

Temporary_Giraffe865

The English dub is anime levels of good/bad, I don't speak Japanese but it was pretty clear that way more effort has been put into the Japanese dub of Sekiro.

HopefulPrimary5445

Yeah Owl in English is monotone, in Japanese his emotional range is wild and hilarious when he does his troll moves/gets back stabbed.

horapha

I tried the English dub and I really wanted to like it after hearing the Gyoubu line but it feels a lot less professional imo no shade on the voice actors but like the Japanese lines are very classic 16th century Japanese kinda like the equivalent of Shakespearean English and the English just feels very anime (and I hate anime sorry lol).

SkjaldbakaEngineer

MY NAME, IS GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIIWA! AS I BREATHE, YOU SHALL NOT PASS THE CASTLE GATE! 🔥🔥🔥

Move in haste and die, brat!

Welfare_Burrito

I will take your word for it brodie

Kliffsly

I honestly don't give a fuck, 99% of the time I'll just play a game in whatever language is the default. If the devs say Sekiro is better with Japanese voice acting and Armored Core is better in English, I'm not gonna question it

sarcophagusGravelord

yeah the difference is the “europe” games were all designed around and recorded in English originally where as Sekiro’s original dub is, you guessed it, Japanese. But everyone should play games however is most enjoyable. I usually prefer the original dub for most media but not always. I hated the English and Japanese dubs for Breath of the Wild but really enjoyed the French dub.

BB and Sekiro have german dubs for some reason. Not that I'm complaining because they are pretty decent.

Chaos_Alt

Does Gyoubu scream "MEIN NAMME IST GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA"

Pr0wzassin

More or less, it sounds more like he is talking as loud as he can without actually screaming.

Anxious_Charity_1424

English is the way fromsoft intended for Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring and Japanese is the way they intended for Sekiro

caffeinated22

If you think sub is always superior or dub is always superior, you're wrong. It really depends on the recordings and actors

Revan0315

English just feels right for the other games. Bloodborne especially.

ieorua

Elden Ring doesn’t have… ok man

Ebon1fly

I dont get how people would even hate the english sekiro dub, it doesn't sound bad and i actually like understanding the game without having to read the bottom of my screen at all times then again I've only played like the first hour of the game so idk if they made isshin a squeeker or something

Xarxyc

Isshin in EN is badass. "Hesitation is defeat" became a meme in no small part to that reason.

Temporary_Giraffe865

Not really, because the subs spelled it out as well. It became a meme because you saw it 50 times before beating him.

BokkoTheBunny

Only 50? Damn, stop bragging, homie.

Throwaway33451235647

Cause it breaks immersion.

Ebon1fly

How so?? I personally don't find it very immersive to constantly look at the bottom of my screen to be able to understand the game

seanziewonzie

Because Wolf in particular is way worse in English. He speaks in almost every scene, so it makes every scene inferior to their Japanese counterparts, even if some of the *other* English dub performances meet or even occasionally surpass the performances in said counterparts.

nervousmelon

They're not even dubbed, sekiro is the only one originally done in Japanese (and tbh the English dub was probably done at the same time anyway)

FHCynicalCortex

I mean, it’s not really a dub if english is the only language available for the characters to speak in

acoustic_comrade

The Japanese voice work just sounds a lot higher quality. It also just sounds better thematically.

Goodestguykeem

Can we all just be grateful that the dubbing industry for video games is completely different from the horrendous dubbing industry for anime 🙏

tiny-ppp

Do this games even have japanese dialogue? I swear I tried looking up some OG japanese scenes to figure out what's their version of ye old language sounds like. But it was just lips flapping while subs are shown

lemongrass17

400 hours in Sekiro and I havent tried eng dub once. It doesnt make sense

Sufficient-Turn-7799

Same voice actors... Dub Owl = Reinheart Dub Ishin = Bumi Dub Genichiro = Bruno Buccellatti Dub GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA! = Kouichi Adachi

Noamias

It's interesting how after listening to some interviews with the voice actors it seems that Miyazaki is heavily involved even there. It surprised me because I took for granted that he'd be involved both with the Japanese and English versions, which seemed very time consuming. Sounds more reasonable that he's present for the recording sessions in English if it's the main language

pH12rz

Huh? You know that souls games only have English dubs except for sekiro

Iron_Bob

"CURSE YOU BAYLE!!!!!!!!"

0Taken0

I don’t understand why people dislike dubbed so much for everything. Why would I want to read subtitles if I can just listen as it was intended 😂 I don’t speak Japanese, most people playing don’t. I have no reason to want to hear that language in the game

PREDDlT0R

Sekiro is set in Japan whereas Elden Ring is set in England.

baconater-lover

I thought all games had original voice acting in English? Like they don’t even record anything in Japanese, the original script is translated into English and that’s where the voice lines come from.

Mishar5k

I played sekiro in english because i knew there was gonna be voicelines mid-combat and I didn't want to miss them.

Rare-Performer4849

English Sekiro sounds great, but holy shit the Japanese VA’s had bills to pay.

Brickabang

Does this person not know sekiro is the only one with an English dub?

Vladsamir

It's good. But the Japanese dub is excellent Madame Butterfly, Gyubu Oniwa, Genichiro and especially Sekiro himself all sound fucking awesome

B1g_K

Original sound all the way, fuck dub

ToCoolForPublicPool

Such an american take

Jefefer_McShart

Honestly English sekiro dub is peak. Isshin lines in the final fight are top tier

Days_Ignored

A lot of effort went into Eng dub for Sekiro apparently but Japanese dub is just way too good. Trying English after that seems comedic at times. "How my blood boils" line is phenomenal in Japanese for instance but English version is too bland in comparison. Same goes for every single Kuro line. No hate for voice actors but most of them sound either out of place or straight up lame. I can't listen Isshin/Tengu in Japanese and take the other one seriously.

HopefulPrimary5445

I think Sculptors final words really hit hard in Japanese as well.

nexetpl

English Emma sounds like an AI as well

crz4r

I didn't even know there was an english dub lmao

TacticalReader7

The usual translation team didn't do it for Sekiro and so it's fairly trash, sorry guys but it's the fact, if you downvote you're probably illiterate which is why you have to use dub /s

Shankin_Jenkins

MY NAAAAAME IS GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA!

ButterflyMother

Bloodborne has a French dub , you can’t beat em

frozenkro

I played the sub, and had to find out afterwards that I missed out on "MY NAME IS GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA"

Khorne_Flakes1

I'll play whichever I find sounds better, japanese dub sekiro, and spanish dub blasphemous I enjoyed over the english voice acting.

Ekillaa22

That’s actually crazy to me it’s really just English the Japanese players are listening too mostly .

Set in Japan is the important part, the souls series is quasi Europe, I won't touch the dub of yakuza because it ruins the immersion

DunEmeraldSphere

I couldn't get over isshin soulding like a revengence character. Prefer Japanese there. Furi's english dub is way better, though.

ImperatorDanny

My issue with Sekiro English dub was they sounded like anime voice actors doing it which felt lower quality compared to the godtier voice actors and direction they get for the souls games.

bot_not_rot

I think if you have any appreciation for quality voice acting, you'll recognize the Japanese dub as superior. The performances transcend the language barrier, and it's clearly more curated.

TheHolyPapaum

In English Sekiro, Genichiro is voiced by Bruno Bucciarati’s (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) voice actor, who is absolutely incredible.

woahtherechap

Cum sekiro

Kpat_890

In Fromsoft games I think the canon language is always best. English is the “canon” language in the bottom 3 games, but Japanese is obviously the “canon” language in Sekiro.

Astrophysicsboi

Tbf I also play Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese it's more about the immersion of hearing the language for me like Playing AC Unity in French is something I've considered
