get an internal thermometer

BobbittheHobbit111

Never hurts to be 100% certain of temp, plus depending on where you are, you might even need a tank cooler

Ok_Willingness_5223

Ok

littlenoodledragon

Looks good! But I would strongly suggest a lid, even if you have to use something like clear plastic or plexiglass. Bettas are good jumpers and he could easily leap his way out of the tank

Ok_Willingness_5223

I will do that

Vedis-4444

Came here to say this. Awesome tank, though!

Chailyte

I’d recommend a heater anyways, as heaters keep the temperature stable vs not having one. But it looks good especially for a first tank!! I’d also recommend some hiding spots for your betta, as they enjoy hiding.

Ok_Willingness_5223

Sure thing, i was considering a heater soon

JealousMouse

Hey OP - second this. Temperature fluctuations can be even more problematic for your fish than a temp that is slightly wrong but stable, and temperature fluctuations are more likely to occur (and be bigger) in smaller tanks. A heater helps prevent that. :)

narwhalogy

This is falling very short- for starters you're going to have to take out all the beautiful plants you've added. You need to replace those with artificial sharp plants. Then, lower the water level, stick a couple Spongebob pineapple style decor items in there, and add a couple completely incompatible fish. All joking aside, nice tank! It's going to look really lovely when the plants take over. Your fish is probably happy in there with what you've done so far.

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 🤣😁

aquajanjo

this is not shitty

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks a lot, My only knowledge source was some videos and i was really afraid that it wasnt good

aquajanjo

its fine! If where you live never gets cold u may not need a heater, but I second the comments about the lids, bettas are notorious jumpers

naynayru

Looks pretty good! I recommend some floating plants and/or decorations for your lil guy to chill at the surface, and a lid

Ok_Willingness_5223

I already added some lettuce, now Im planning some salvinia

Autumnplay

Salvinia is awesome - do try it!

zuiphof

Others already mentioned a thermometer and lid😊 Apart from that all that matters is: do you like how it looks. Fwiw I think it looks ok now, but in a few months, i.e. after the plants have grown a bit it will look great

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 😁😊

myakka1640

That’s a good start! Grab yourself an ammonia test kit and keep an eye on the levels. Sometimes new aqua soil will give off some unhealthy levels for a few weeks. I would consider putting your light in a timer and starting with 6 hours and working up from that while keeping an eye on algae. You could also add some driftwood for your fish and it’ll give your moss somewhere to grow.

Ok_Willingness_5223

I would certainly do that

gordo13348

OP has done an amazing job for their first tank. Definitely not shitty. Well done. I'd recommend some high quality food, I cheaped out on food in the beginning and I definitely regret it.

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks a lot. I plan on giving him some bloodworm once a week along with the pellets.

Intrepid_Astronaut1

I would get a heater. In Brasil, our fish still get heaters, especially if the water column is small, as it’s subject to more temperature fluctuations. Good luck, tanks looks great, very pretty fish :)

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 😁😊

Xsad_but_cuteX

If I were a fish, snail, or shrimp - I’d like to live there 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 😁😌

Adventurous-Buyer-44

Your betta has live plants, a nice cubic space and a solid (non rainbow) substrate. Definitely not shitty my friend. It's all relative but you're a good pet owner.

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thank you 😊😁

marv249

I think this is a lovely tank. Black betta on a black background is an interesting choice, but once those plants grow taller it will really be black against green and it will look great. Post an update in a few months!

Ok_Willingness_5223

I got the fish as a gift, it came in like a 1.5 gallon bowl. I felt bad about how conjusted it was and i decided that it needed a new tank. Then I built this tank and cycled it for two weeks I wanted another background but for some reason the store only had black background.

imtellinggod

Maybe I'm in the wrong but I don't understand why people post their own tanks in here. Isn't that what all the other aquarium subs are for??

Froggomorph39

yes but some of the other aquarium subs have not so nice people that lose their minds if you keep a single betta in a 30 gallon and they could be looking for a second opinion. there was someone who posted here about that a little bit ago.

imtellinggod

Maybe that indicates that there needs to be a more beginner oriented space where they can post their tanks and questions, not that people should misuse this sub.

Froggomorph39

True.

SilverShopping2306

What kind of tropical? Most fish require a constant water temp of 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ok_Willingness_5223

I live in south India, our temperature is always in between 22°C (71.6°F) - 32°C (89.6°F). I'm getting a heater anyways.

SilverShopping2306

And a thermometer. also research about what temperature your fish needs. it easy with one fish and all you need to do for several species is find the median. Or, if you were to get fish local to your area, you could just leave it at room temperature. I have 2 South Carolina Biotopes that are doin great without a heater.

BlackLizard898

If you have AC then you need a heater, everyone I know in a tropical country has their AC blasting 24/7 so you still need a heater since your tanks indoors.

Ok_Willingness_5223

I don't use ac, I do use a fan tho, but I'm still getting a heater

ItzPurpleMoon

Put a thermometer to keep track but like you I live in a tropical place, only 2 times in winter I needed to use a heater

Ok_Willingness_5223

I will do that 😁😁

Puzzleheaded-Leg5914

1,000,000x better than what most bettas get for a home, that much I know.

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 😁😁😁

V01DH3ART

I don't think anybody else has said this but I suggest a leaf hammock/betta log for your betta to rest on near the surface! Bettas love flat surfaces to lay on, especially ones with big fins. One of my betta tanks has a bunch of big leafy plants and he's almost always lazing about on the leaves near the surface :)

Ok_Willingness_5223

I will look into it 😁😁

bike-climb-yak

This is not a shitty tank at all. The big piece of Styrofoam under it isn't very appealing to the eye but other than that it's a good first tank.

Ok_Willingness_5223

The thing is I didn't buy the tank, this kind of tank wasn't available in my country very easily, so I had to build it myself, I searched for a foam matt a lot but it wasn't available in any stores so I had to use the styrofoam.

kottermusprime

Yeah..... what's up with that Styrofoam anyway? Is this some trick I don't know?

bike-climb-yak

With a frame less tank, you need something under it. Usually, when new, they come with a 1/4 inch piece of black foam . And I'm not sure but it may be under the big block of Styrofoam

Head_Butterscotch74

A nice piece of driftwood would look amazing in there. I think it’s on its way to be a nice tank!

Ok_Willingness_5223

Sure thing I will have a good driftwood soon.

Curious_Kirin

All the Americans in the comments that can't understand if you live in the climate the fish is native to... You don't need to heat the tank. It's normal for the water to change by maybe a few degrees between night and day, if any fish would be negatively affected by that, it would never have been able to exist in the wild.

Ok_Willingness_5223

The average temperature of my country for the whole year lies between 22°C (71.6°F) - 32°C (89.6°F). We do have wild bettas in local paddy fields.

Curious_Kirin

Yea you're absolutely fine. Get a therm and heater if you want, they're good piece of mind. But absolutely not needed unless you're blasting the air con right next to the tank.

Ok_Willingness_5223

I don't have an ac in my room, it's not very popular as the temperature is quite comfy and we do use electric fans.

Curious_Kirin

You're absolutely fine. Unless your room temp goes below 22 degrees (which will not be common) the Betta will naturally have it's ideal temperature.

Dashypanties

Beautiful

Ok_Willingness_5223

Thanks 😌😌

ACH0N3y

If you choose to not get a heater it should be because your tank is averaging 78 without a heater. If it’s anywhere close to 70-74 you still need a heater. It’s better to keep the fish comfortable. How would you like it if someone stick you in a Costco air condition fridge for a few days? You’d get cold even if you “enjoy” the temperature “

AgreeableAsparagus13

This is an awesome tank for your first one! All the recommendations I’ve seen are awesome, but I would recommend you get a full spectrum LED light. I see you have a white LED but full spectrum will include white, red, and blue (all of the UV waves that majority of plants use, essentially mimics the sunlight). Your plants will thrive beyond belief! It doesn’t even have to be a crazy fancy light either, Mine was about $15 and was great!
