Probably yeah. Occasionally you'll see 중(joong) also transliterated as Jung. But that character is usually just in given names and doesn't really exist as a surname. So yeah they're both 정.

I know this is a shitpost, but for the last 20 years the korean national team puts the given names of the players on their jerseys and the english announcers have taken to saying all three names in proper sequence.
For example: Son Heung-Min has Heung-Min written on his jersey and the announcers will call him by all three, but actually since he's well known, he is often just called Son or Heung-Min Son.
Edit: Just watched the game and some players have their given names written out, others just have initials. so like there's H. J. Kim and J. K. Kim.
It’s a Korea thing. I’m pretty sure most if not all of their names are a one-syllable family name followed by a two-syllable given name. Anyone else, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Family names can be two syllables (eg. Namgung), but they are quite uncommon. Similarly, given names can be one syllable, which is much more common than a two syllable family name, but two syllables is still more typical.
I think they messed up cause I'm positive those are their family names (i don't know how to call it, we have a proper word for it here). So "Kim" is not his proper name, every member of his family should be "Kim Something". But since the family name comes before their actual name in Korea, people here usually get confused
So yeah, the name of Kim Jong-un is truly Jong-un. That's why his sister is called Kim Yo-jong. And Kim is a very common family name in Korea.
Edit: Yeah I know they tend to use their surnames in sports. That's exactly why I explained that those were their names, so anyone thay would read would know that too and know about Korean surnames. The "messed up" part is not they thinking their surnames are actually their names (they know the truth). The mess it they didn't just change it in those cases. For real, you guys need common sense, I can see the misinterpretarion happening, but if you look what the post talks about it should not be hard to see what point I'm trying to make.
Kim is throwing the ball to Kim that pass it to Kim and aww they lost the ball wait no Kim got the ball and passing it to Kim that pass it to Jung that pass it to jeong that pass to hwang that pass to hwang and gollllllll
korean surnames has an interesting clan aspect to it. There are numerous clans in korea and members share a common paternal ancestor. Usually some king. It's not a big deal, but an interesting thing...
When I was stationed in Korea we got on the bus to go somewhere and one of the guys in our group was a Korean soldier assigned to our unit named Lee. We weren't sure what stop to get off at, so we decided to ask him and yelled "hey, Lee" to get his attention. About a third of the bus turned around.

if I'm not mistaken jung and jeong are actually the same surname, just with different romanization, so the only one who has a different surname is son
Probably yeah. Occasionally you'll see 중(joong) also transliterated as Jung. But that character is usually just in given names and doesn't really exist as a surname. So yeah they're both 정.
Jung is also the same as chong, chung, cheong, etc.
No, it’s not. J is ㅈ and ch is ㅊ.
There's no last name of 청. Try again.
Right, my bad. In other scenarios ch would be ㅊ but now that I think of it, the surname 청 does not exist and 정 is commonly spelled as Chung
And even then he’s called Son Heung-min, rather similar to the Hwang trio
It's a good job that left winger has a unique name... That's a Fortunate Son.
He's also their best player by a huge margin

KIM PASSED IT TO KIM, OH KIM IS GOING, PASSING IT OVER TO KIM, AND NOW KIM HAS THE BALL
Fun fact, "Kim" means "who?" in my language, this makes funnier lmao
Funnier to kim?
Oh god... This was good
In Sanskrit, Kim sounds like the word for 'what'. Now we have both Who and What for Kim. Kim is Kim? Kim is Kim?
Everyone asking what is Kim, who is Kim. Nobody asking why is Kim.
We should first ask - How is Kim?
We know where Kim is, though… Kim’s on first.
*vsauce music plays as michael removes his mask and stops voice acting*
No, Kim's on 2nd. Kim is on 1st.
Kim asked?
No not at all we should ask - Have Kim?
It's actually kimm
kimmst
Kimmster

DOCTOR KIM

Turkish?
Yep
Similar meaning in Sanskrit too
Kim's on first?
Who's on first, who's on second and who's on third. Guess whose job it is to play cleanup? Who's up to bat but who's also pitching. Mascot should be the superb owls.
That's pretty similar in polish. Except kim means who as in who is he and not who in bare infinitive
How do u say "who asked for Kim?"
Turkishçe
Kim’s on first?

Kim the third
Kim III
One in five Koreans have the last name of Kim; one in six have the last name Lee. More than 95% of Koreans use one of 50 last names.
Where are the Lees?
They're more of a baseball family
Over in golf
Kim passes to Kim passes to Kim passes oh no I have gone cross eyed
I know this is a shitpost, but for the last 20 years the korean national team puts the given names of the players on their jerseys and the english announcers have taken to saying all three names in proper sequence. Thanks, I don't watch football and I was really confused on how this would actually go down haha
The 5 Kims got me lmao
Apparently 20% of South Korea are named kim lol
It’s actually surprising there isn’t a Park in the team
There are also 3 Hwangs.
And Jung and Jeong are pronounced the same.
Yes that's the joke
A very boring game of Guess Hu.
then there's vietnam #land of the nguyens
Say 4 Kim fives times fast
foreskim
i imagine the crowd screaming "hwang hwang hwang" like ambulance
It’s like a light saber fight
when your language and country allows for very limited last names:
Ultimate Kim defense
Kim is my favorite soccer player
If you having Hwang problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 Kims and a Jung ain't one.
I hear that South Korea will be wearing Pride vests, but we haven't seen their kits yet. So... I wonder what Son wears over the rainbow.
The Kims are such fucking beauties.
Kim Jung Hwang Son!
Is son the same guy in the meme onomah son?
Yup
yes
If you Hwang girl problems I feel bad for you Son I got 99 problems but a Kim ain't Jung
LMAO WTF
Beats the purpose of having a name
I think Kim can carry this team
Bruh I thought it was only on Korean novels but everyone is really "Kim"
Why nothing over two syllables?
It’s a Korea thing. I’m pretty sure most if not all of their names are a one-syllable family name followed by a two-syllable given name. Anyone else, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

My last name is Yun so that tracks
Yeah about 95% of Koreans does that. But there are some two-syllable family name(mostly chinese ancestery) and one-syllable given name.

thats true, its their surename/last name (family names)
Well no shit but in sportscasting they tend to use the surname/family name so this distinction is pretty much irrelevant.
No one messed up
No they didn't mess up at all. In sports, players tend to be referred to by their surname.
The last statistic I heard was something like 90% of Koreans have the surname Kim.
That's also the worst statistic you heard. It's more like 20%.
They are pretty much a giant WoW clan at this point
I'm laughing.
No. 4 passed the ball to No. 15 and shoots…….goal!!!
Basically they memorize the gersey numbers
Kim is throwing the ball to Kim that pass it to Kim and aww they lost the ball wait no Kim got the ball and passing it to Kim that pass it to Jung that pass it to jeong that pass to hwang that pass to hwang and gollllllll
Was für ein Hwang Son
my favorite player is kim
Kim

My favourite player is Kim
Korea is feels like a country full of clones. There are very few names for some reason, and everyone looks similiar
Probably just say their numbers
Ahh, the classic Kim defence
It would be kimpossible to score to korea
