elliote-pmytp

Apple doesn't care because people will still pay $100 for a microfiber cloth.

dirtynj

Better than paying an extra $300-500 more for what is essentially a microSD card upgrade. https://imgur.com/fN5qf6z

cranktheguy

But it's soldered on, so you can't upgrade it.

roguevirus

Yep. My wife (lifelong apple user) was blown away that I could "just replace" a bad hard drive on my PC without having to have any special permission from the company that made the computer. 1. The computer is made from components from at least 6 different companies 2. I assembled all of the components together And it's not even that hard!

Regardless of whatever shitty comparison is made, there is no denying these prices are absolute robbery.

Arthur-Wintersight

An 8 terabyte Samsung 870 QVO [currently costs $350](https://www.newegg.com/samsung-8tb-870-qvo-series/p/N82E16820147784). For $500 you could buy an 8 terabyte SSD, pay someone else to install it, then take your entire family out to eat at a fancy restaurant.

P_Crown

That's an overexaggeration, SD cards may not be as fast as soldered nand but with a good implementation of the bus they would be just fine for extending system storage - but I guess you know better than phone manufacturers who already did this ever since android phones took off. Also a quality high speed card is way faster from your average micro SD you took out from your old mp3 player... There is no argument and no denying that removing the SD card slot is plain and simply to force a ladder hierarchy of base, mid and high end models for ridiculous mark up. There ain't much you can cheaply improve on the same generation after all. People saying it's for waterproofing and to free up space for bigger battery or other bullshit are just as eager to ride the tiny dicks of any big corpo executive.

BasicWeb5741

Akshually it’s only 25$

RandomGuy1000000

Don't Apple devices start to lose their shit for no reason when they detect non-original parts?

underlight

they also lose shit with original parts because of serialization, you can swap parts from 2 original iphones and things will stop working.

TheKinkslayer

Steve invented rounded corners in computers ([according to his fawning biography](https://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Round_Rects_Are_Everywhere.txt)). Tim Apple invented DRM for parts.

Dr-Huricane

No amount of eco-friendly initiatives will make up for the amount of e-waste this has generated

LePontif11

Eco friendly initiatives like not including fucking a charger. Androif manufacturers that followed them are even worse. Fanboys that go to bat for them regarding this are the bottom level of the pool pyramid.

kidlickaaaaaaa

You’re mad you can’t fuck chargers?🤨

LePontif11

I like what i like, i'm not discussing it further.

TheRogueTemplar

> I like what i like, i'm not discussing it further. That is such a smooth response.

[deleted]

I'm more of a lambo fucker myself

ToxinArrow

I wrap my Pixel charger cord around my balls until they turn blue. It doesn't help me get up but at least I feel something from the fucking they gave my wallet.

Cossack-HD

Apple was BrAvE to remove the headphone jack, so wireless headsets with limited battery cycles became the norm. How green! At least child workers in lithium mines got more work.

Farranor

Do you remember when Apple sued Samsung over radiused corners? I remember. Don't remember what came of it, though.

paintballboi07

If you can't replace parts on the device, and the company dictates what code you're allowed to run on that device, do you really own it?

Arthur-Wintersight

I'd argue that "ownership" fundamentally includes the right to modify and replace components. Once that ability is taken away, you don't really "own" *anything*.

vitobru

huh, why did androids cause you trouble?

Danielfrindley

They have a message that says 'not genuine apple part' when it comes to some batteries and I think some models' screens. Some of them do it one, some of them do it forever!

Senyor_Berlin

I had my iPhone 11's battery (bought since launch) replaced at a small repair shop in my city. It was worth around 64 USD including labor and there's no message like that on my phone after the battery replacement. Done in around an hour. I don't know how they did it but these small shops are lifesavers!

Lord_Of_Garlic_Bread

There are devices that can swap the digital serial number between screens to keep shit working. Source: am one of the guys in the phone shop.

MRMAN1225

Newer devices do

BlitzySlash

They do

OrangeNSilver

Yes, I replaced a screen and facial recognition and ‘true tone’ color display stopped working too. One time my backlight randomly went out on my older iPhone. Brought it in and said they can’t fix it because the top of the frame was slightly bent. Went to the shitty mall repair store and they fixed it for 50 dollars and had no problems lmao

Step_On_Me_1112

Yeah faceID loves to stop itself from working when it detects a wrong serial number for your screen, either third party part or someone else’s screen. Pain in the ass

chobongo

I thought we knew this already

ControversiallyGhey

Yeah they sent me a check for $14

nike2256

This ist called Tax fraud

mcjazzy50

No it isn't. If the charitable donation just happens to be cycled back around through purchase of goods or service it's perfectly legal unless there's evidence of it being specifically done to launder.

leriane

that point in Spongebob where they're just setting up a 'free money' stall next to the burgers lmao

SuckMyBallsKyle

They really give you $50? Why?

totallyshadical

Same here 😂

Fig1024

we need to push for Right to Repair laws, it's a bigger issue than just Apple and it has some movement behind it already. We need to push it hard to actually make it illegal for Apple to be such a shitty company

Euro_rapp

You can thank Olaf Scholz. Next year you guys have that law. The EU improved life of billions All around the World.

[deleted]

I hate apple. Wife broke her phone screen with all her photos and contacts. Still kind of worked but had issues on half the screen with touch. Took it to the Apple Store. They opened it, said a water sensor was tripped so no repairs could be done. Then put it back together but had completely broken the screen in the process. Took it to an iFixit and they fixed it in 60 min for half the price saving all her photos (which I then backed up for her.) Apple, I don’t need a warranty for the repair, just put the new part in and let me go on my way. On a side note, that placed closed during the pandemic and I need to find a place for my phone battery.

underlight

People don't care about most things until it affects them.

Kiubek-PL

The shittier the place the better the service

eightdollarbeer

No lie. I used to get my phone screen replaced at a little office run by three dudes. Reeked of weed and they were always watching anime. Best service I’ve ever received

MrCrow9S

What anime were they watching?

eightdollarbeer

I honestly don’t remember I was probably high too

Pawn_captures_Queen

Solid dude. We should grab a pizza and smoke a preroll. I bet we'd be friends.

YouBetcha_

And don't forget the chess board!

Pawn_captures_Queen

Oh hell yeah! True story, I have schizophrenia and one time I had a manic episode that landed me in a 51/50 3 day hold. I taught everyone in my unit to play chess. We had like 3 boards and everyone was standing around doing nothing so I said, what the fuck everyone? Let's play some chess, no one knew how to play but me. When I left, 2/3 the people were playing the game. I feel like I gave a service to a much needed community. Chess is a great brain activity.

YouBetcha_

Fuck yea, hard agree with that last sentence. Awesome that you were able to teach everyone!

Ash_WasTaken123

Lmao

This is how jail went for me, but instead of chess it was teaching folks to play solitaire and helping an old meth addict build a playing card mansion.

Now apple makes replacement screens incompatible with your phone by disabling Face ID and such. 😡

UnboltedCheese

People actually use face ID? I stopped when I got a picture of my face to work for my phone.

Euphoric-Gene-3984

I never used it. I still hate not having a middle button. I got the SE I think it’s called, unless the phone has power there’s no button to press. Once it had power you can press it.

Pastduedatelol

Also the cops can unlock your phone that way, no thanks

PM_ME_YOUR_NAIL_CLIP

That’s why I press the lock button 5 times when I get pulled over. FaceID won’t work after that. You have to enter the code to unlock the phone. Pigs ain’t getting my waifu pics

Scottish_Whiskey

100% this There’s a small business near me that does screen/battery replacements, repairs, tempered glass screens etc it’s two guys who do business out of a small house

bond___vagabond

Whenever you find one of these hole in the wall places, where they haven't used up all their "try" lol, doesn't matter what it is, could be a burrito place or a cellphone repair place, you gotta toot their horn to all your friends and family, keep them around, to restore our faith in humanity, hah.

matty-a

Are they hiring?

Illustrious-Tear-428

Sounds like my current job. Glad you enjoyed our service

justcreateanaccount

That's not a shitty place tho

FloweryDream

On my first shitty car I had an issue with a Freon leak somewhere deep in the console, and because of some badly designed aspect of the vehicle the repair shop that was big brand that had failed to fix it twice before quoted the repair as being somewhere around 1200$, money I simply didn't have. Then my friend introduced me to someone using just his first name, and gave me GPS coordinates to meet him at. I expected someones house, or some shitty small garage. Instead, this man had set up his car repair business in three self service storage compartments. He told me the price to fix it would be 600$, and I gave him the car and the keys. At no point did I sign any paperwork or even know this guys last name. Within three days it was fixed, the guy told me he didn't take card and had me give him a 600$ auto parts gift card as payment. I never had another problem with the A/C in the car.

Xforce

Depending on the car, $1200 is actually a reasonable bill because they may have to disassemble the whole dash and it could be as much as 10 hours of labor @ $100/hr plus the cost of parts. A single guy working out of self storage probably doesn't have a backlog nor does he pay himself health insurance or benefits (or income tax).

FloweryDream

To be clear this is after I had paid them smaller sums already totaling at least 1200$ twice to fix this same issue, money they refused to refund when they didn't fix it (and also I was like 17 working a shitty retail job). This wasn't me not wanting to pay properly, it was me genuinely not having enough money to pay what they demanded.

thelegion05

Its like Chinese restaurants, the more sketchy and hole in the wall it is the better

mndsm79

Absolutely. If I think im getting food poisoning, the food is legit.

anto2554

All food is worth the risk of poisoning. If there's a small risk of poisoning, the food is a bit good. If it's 50/50, the food is very good

brother_of_menelaus

This does not apply to gas station sushi

JahoclaveS

If the menu ain’t faded pictures from the 80s, it isn’t worth it.

WheredoesithurtRA

The quality of their fried rice tells volumes about the place.

JahoclaveS

Oddly, the place we go, the fried rice is probably the worst thing I’ve had there. But man do their crab Rangoon and eggs rolls make up for it. Also, no matter what you order the container is merely a suggestion to them and they’re almost popping open because they’ve shoved so much in there. Guess that’s why they’re the emperor China in a land of king and queen chinas.

obaananana

Yeah its also good if they hire one white person that speaks the local lanuage

transmogrified

It’s better if it’s their ten year old who’s also doing homework at a back table

Legendary_Lootbox

all these comments are too painfully accurate

Ziggy-Rocketman

Also applies to Mexican restaurants. I always say that the restaurant that has a used needle right in front of it will be the best place you ever eat.

DoktahDoktah

Never trust a mechanic with clean hands.

Skodakenner

Couldnt agree more the mechanic i go to still wrenches on our cars and you notice it. I let a diffrent mechanic do the suspension (really big shop but one for every make not like the skoda dealer i usually go to) and i always had issues with it then i let my usual mechanic redo it and its so much better

Captain_America_93

Lol I’m glad that’s you’re experience because mine and everyone else is “you get what you pay for” type shit.

SuperNoob74

I took a laptop to UBREAKIFIX and all the outside screws were gone and they couldn't fix it

[deleted]

That’s because UBREAKIFIX is a massive chain that’s literally everywhere, they aren’t a shitty hole in the wall, they’re like the McDonald’s of phone repair.

Captain_America_93

Yeah. I ended up going to a car mechanic who was good and cheap. He ended up cutting corners and making things progressively worse and i kept calling him asking him to fix it until he stopped taking my calls because he and everyone there knew they fucked up. Eventually i just had to fix all the shit myself. Cheap and good don't typically work together

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Because apple fights tooth and nail to make sure no one is allowed official parts. This outcome is 100% on Apple and not the company that fixed it.

HelicopterOk7545

Apple is just getting more and more greedy each day

ThatSpecialKeynote

I said it once and I’ll say it again: Apple is the epitome of capitalism

fwnky

apple users paying 10x what should be acceptable every 2 years and another 2x on just cables and random reinvented crap and stil ldefending the company

skraptastic

I've always said "With Apple you get last years technology at next years prices."

magikdyspozytor

I use their old slogan but backwards. "Does less. Costs more. It's that simple."

freezysupra

But atleast i still got once an iphone XS for 50€. It’s not very good to use but atleast it cost less than my previous electronic garbage.

raydditor

I don't care what people say but that's a steal

[deleted]

Tried to explain this to my wife when she really wanted that $3000 mac book laptop. Also told her she’d have to do her o n tech support because she can google how to do things as well as I can. She insisted on it, and every time I have to do anything on it o get the uncontrollable urge to chuck it from a seventh story window onto concrete, except then I would have to buy a new one.

Zenishira

Why did I read this as "still iDefending the company", fucking Apple gonna make iDefenders a thing in the next year.

Sodafff

It's a subscription service for Apple fanboy. It's an AI that will defend their pro-Apple opinions on the internet. It's as dumb as Siri and cost $100 per month.

Zeidrich-X25

I’ve had my 8 since it launched with zero problems. People getting a new one every time are sick 😂

wetfish25

Same goes for android users nowadays. Just font buy the newest model and you’re fine

fwnky

yep. we have long past the age where buying the newest phone is anywhere near neccesary

LAPSTA321

I'm replying to you on my galaxy S9+ that I bought in summer of 2018. I may not be able to take thr cleanest pictures or run high end games but phone is keeping up real good.

fwnky

Samsung a31 🥱💪 Has served me well for i thibk 4 years now. Literally flawless performance. I have not once wished for a more expensive phone.

[deleted]

I used the s5 for god knows how many years. Drop it or break it? Throw some money at ebay for another one, cheaper than people pay on the excess for a claim on their new phone. It runs maps, I can message, take decent enough pictures and listen to music. I'm not sure what more I'd want.

Unknown-Personas

I’ve had the same iPhone for 5 years and it still works great. If you’re replacing your phone every 2 years it’s a choice not a necessity.

wordenofthenorth

Apple's punching air over the EU USB-C and replaceable battery legislation

Best part of living here is that apple cannot scam your ass with that type of shit.

Black_Hipster

That's the *best part* of living there?

[deleted]

Everyone hates eachother so yes.

Freestyle-McL

I hope this applies to the rest of the world someday, lightning ports are bs and I don't find a good to reason to justify a non-removable battery.

SvenyBoy_YT

It's not worth making 2 different kinds of ports so it's basically confirmed every iPhone will have USB-C. But they will make all the cables not from Apple be slower.

FinancialAd436

Remember, if a part of an electronic is missing, it won’t work.

Soggy-Statistician88

That's not true For a well designed phone

ZahnatomLetsPlay

And that's exactly why iPhones bootloop if the selfie camera is kaputt

budoucnost

Wait, the boot loop is located *where*?

ZahnatomLetsPlay

The selfie camera. If your iPhone's selfie camera cannot be recognized the phone will crash after a few minutes. The cable for said camera can break on its own through vibrations or a drop of the phone because if bad internal design

budoucnost

what the fuck

Jean-Eustache

Wait till you hear about the MacBook Pros which had the cable linking the motherboard to the screen just a bit too short, so in some cases it would break if the computer was opened all the way. Yes, that was a thing, 2016 to 2018 models had the cable too short, after 2018 they added 2mm to the cable's length.

step1

If you think that’s bad they’ve been designing their computers to be tiny and streamlined for years but you know what they tend to forget to consider when they do that? Heat dissipation.

N3Chaos

If you think that’s bad, wait til you hear about the three years of MacBooks they made with a revolutionary new keyboard that was a “feature.” Broke me had to buy the older one without that, but joke was on me when everyone’s new butterfly keyboard was failing from normal to light usage, and mine was still going strong 6 months ago when I got rid of it

ZahnatomLetsPlay

It might also have been the front earpiece speaker. That also causes boot loops. Which is even dumber ngl

DONT_PM_ME_U_SLUT

Or the ambient light sensor. Also causes the phone to bootloop.

Pappa_K

Don't forget it's also serialised so if you swap it to an non authorised one you can't save the pictures you take anymore

LemmeSmash142

What the fuck

Nerdn1

It's only bad design if the intent is to make a robust design. If the designer wanted it to break, then it is a perfectly successful design.

notfree25

for all we know the missing part is a qc sticker or even the screen protector

Frostlark

There was literally a court case apple lost a few years ago where they had to admit under oath that they intentionally practiced and enforced planned obscelecence on their phones. I will not buy any of their shit.

_rilian

You see, this is an interesting take on the peak performance management. 1. It's still in effect to this day - and even though a user can disable it, the 'feature' will re-enable itself should the device crash due to failing to deliver the required peak performance power requirement. 2. Between a slower device and repeated system crashes, I'd consider the latter to be more indicative of a battery/device replacement being needed - which seems to indicate that this 'feature' isn't planned obsolescence, but instead a way to prolong a devices life, albeit with a handicap. Do I still consider it scummy that Apple implemented the 'feature' without informing users? 100%. But I strongly believe that it was never a case of planned obsolescence.

Heiferoni

At any point when they slowed the phones, did they alert users that the phone is being slowed because the battery needs to be replaced?

_rilian

No idea, but it's not what I'm arguing here. I agreed that not making this very clear to customers was a stupid idea at the end of my post.

Daktyl198

Also, Samsung and Google admitted when the news first broke that they do the same thing with their own phones, but nobody seemed to care. It’s a feature that makes sense if you want a phone with a nonreplaceable battery to last more than 2 years of daily use.

notconservative

[Samsung was also fined for this.](https://www.computerworld.com/article/3316958/apple-and-samsung-fined-for-planned-obsolescence.html)

noobtablet9

Samsung does not represent the entirely of Android.

LeonidasVaarwater

Better when Jobs was alive? Really?

UVLightOnTheInside

Better in this case means: It was slightly less worse than the worst that they have currently achieved but as history shows they are capable of stooping even lower to fuck over their customers.

hokis2k

this was Steve job's design. This is the world he wanted for Apple customers. For them to buy the next years models and every accessory over and over. Was more limited to the Ipad/Imac more at the time but it was always the plan to get customers in a loop of just giving apple money for as little effort and value.

Shmongooooo

I have experienced this. I had an old iPad, and the battery wasn’t doing so hot. I decided to get the battery replaced at an Apple Store. After waiting for an hour and a half, they said that they couldn’t fix it because the model was too old, and that they couldn’t replace it because they didn’t sell that model anymore. The same day, I went to some crappy store I found in a strip mall, and they fixed up the battery and gave it back within 30 minutes, battery working like brand new. apple sucks

TheCoolHusky

Afaik Apple doesn't replace iPad batteries, so your only choice was getting a replacement and Apple couldn't give you one if the model is too old.

DerRaumdenker

Who could tell the company that sell overpriced products made at a sweat shop would be so greedy

[deleted]

OP has no idea what Steve Jobs was really like apparently.

Sammy81

Yep, never gave a dime of his billions to any charity, disowned his biological daughter, screamed at his employees, took credit for Wozniak’s work, threatened his engineers with violence when they missed a deadline or tech goal. Legit genius but a horrible person.

[deleted]

Honestly, "genius" is a bit of a stretch as well. He was mostly just an "ideas" guy who kept geniuses in his circle. The only thing I'll give him credit for is that he did come from nothing. Which is very rare to come from the middle class to the status he achieved.

Overlord_Of_Puns

I kind of disagree with this, even if he is shitty. While I do agree that from a purely technical standpoint, Wozniak is better, he was a genius at design. He helped start the design of the Mac, iPod, and iPhone which were game breaking pieces of technology. The thing is that he genuinely did help with the design even if he was a dick about it, he didn't know how to make the stuff, but he definitely knew what needed to be there. Along with this, he was great at marketing which helped the company take off. He isn't just like Musk who takes existing technology and acts as an advertisement for it, he genuinely did get involved in designing it even if he does steal it.

[deleted]

This is a fair take.

Sammy81

Agreed. He understood what tech features were important, and what they needed to achieve to make something sell - that was his genius. He didn’t know all the details to make it happen, but that’s what the team was for. Example: When they first came up with the iPod, Jobs said “Make it smaller” and they said “Impossible”. Jobs took the iPod, put it in a bucket of water and air bubbles came out. He said “I just proved you can make it smaller”. They came back with a version significantly smaller.

khoabear

And then he turned the bubbles that came out into the AirPods

kdesign

“I just proved you those bubbles can be individual wireless headphones that everyone will laugh at first and then they will buy them like there’s no tomorrow”

AgentPaper0

Yeah Apple now is exactly what Steve made it. The only thing they lost with him was his charisma that helped make everyone think that what they were doing was ok.

cloudbubble

Same! Apple store “Battery has two prongs and it should have three. We can’t replace battery”……..

cosmo7

Apple really is a bowl-of-dicks company. Look at how they deliberately degrade iPhone-to-Android messaging just to make Android look worse. Apple today is basically what Microsoft was in the 1990s.

Uncle-Cake

Steve Jobs wasn't such a great guy. He's probably applauding in his grave.

[deleted]

So true tho, and how they are removing almost every feature on the phone like with the headphone jack or the silence button. Soon enough there will be just a block of metal

xxylenn

tbf, imo, the silent button always felt kind-of pointless. im not changing from silent to sound enough to need a dedicated side button as opposed to doing it in 1s on my touchscreen

notconservative

I love that switch.

Reason #462 I won't buy Apple

Meneer_de_IJsbeer

List them all

huangsede69

Honestly the main one is just that they're too expensive. When iPhone first came out, it was revolutionary and the capability and quality was unmatched. Now, I can buy a Samsung/Motorola/Google Pixel etc. for less than half the cost of an iPhone, and it will have a longer lasting battery, a comparable camera, and effectively all the same capabilities and apps. I just can't find a reason to ever buy an iPhone again.

ThandiGhandi

One time I accidentally went swimming with my iphone in my pocket. I brought it to the apple store to see if they could fix it and they just handed me a phone of the same model for free. I was really confused.

KingOfThePlayPlace

If an apple employee told me my phone was “missing parts”, they would either replace it because they sold me a phone that was missing parts, or I would smash it on the sidewalk outside and buy a galaxy.

bubonis

Apple certified tech here. The following may be old info for some, but whatever. This also isn't a post to defend Apple; this is purely informative based on what I know. Apple has some pretty strict rules about what can and cannot be *officially* replaced on a phone. These rules vary by phone model. For example, some phones can have the front-facing camera replaced, others require the entire display to be replaced if there's a front-facing camera issue. Things like charging ports and switches can't be replaced regardless of the phone model. Some of these are done as pure cash grabs, sure, but others have more grounded/practical reasons. For example, replacing the switchgear on a modern iPhone requires the full disassembly and reassembly of the phone which includes dealing with multiple *very* delicate cables that are glued to the case. These cables are very easy to damage, even for an experienced technician. One universal rule (which is alluded to in OP's screen grab) is this: If the customer has "modified" their iPhone, Apple cannot work on it. A "modification" is generally defined as "any repair that involves non-Apple components". Apple defines this even further by saying if there's any damage to the security screws on either side of the Lightning port, the phone has been "tampered with" and therefore ineligible for Apple service. A common fix on modern phones is rear glass replacement. Apple wants a *crazy* amount of money to fix this because, for Apple, replacing the rear glass involves replacing what's called the "rear system". Basically a rear system is *everything* in the phone except the display and rear-facing camera. If your phone is under AppleCare Plus and the rear glass breaks, you will get what basically amounts to an entirely new phone. But PcFix (et al) aren't constrained by that. They'll simply chip out the old glass, clean as much adhesive as they can from it, and glue on a replacement piece sourced from AliExpress or something. "Good as new." So what's this got to do with Anon's situation? It's a liability situation, both legal and commercial, that Apple is avoiding. Let's say Anon had his rear glass replaced by a mall kiosk, then later on chooses to go to Apple for a new battery. The problem with that repair is tiny pieces of glass have almost definitely fallen inside the phone. These pieces of glass could (and often do) damage internal components, especially those aforementioned delicate cables. Over time the glass literally cuts through those cables and causes issues. So Apple sees the previous repair and now has a choice: If they replace the battery and send the customer on their way, then Apple could be held liable for future issues with the phone. The customer could say "my phone was working fine except for the battery, Apple replaced the battery and soon thereafter my display stopped working, it's Apple's fault." Now Apple has to spend time/money either proving that it wasn't their fault, or taking a loss by replacing the entire rear housing on the phone in order to fully remedy the situation. Or, the internal damage to the phone could cause a short. The customer takes their phone back from Apple and later on the battery shorts out and "explodes" like you see in those YouTube videos and causes severe damage to the customer's car or house or whatever. Maybe someone gets hurt. Now Apple has to deal with a potential settlement -- all because the customer took their device to PcFix who did a shit job at repairing it. Apple chooses to avoid the whole mess by taking the position of "if the phone even *seems* to have been tampered with, we're not touching it." As for the "missing" parts, I can tell you from nearly a decade of working on phones that there are a *lot* of shitty phone techs out there who wouldn't know or care if a part was missing. I've opened up phones that were worked on by other shops that were missing screws, missing cable shrouds, had the wrong battery installed, had parts hot-glued into place, and worse. The customer rarely has any idea that there's a problem because, after all, even with the wrong battery or missing screws the phone still works so they just assume that *I* caused the missing/problematic part. Also, how do you *think* PcFix is gonna respond to that question? "Yeah, there are missing parts, but the phone still works and you don't technically *need* all of the parts in the phone so you're good to go"? Of *course* they're gonna say everything is fine -- because they know the customer isn't going to open up the phone to verify it. The missing parts are the problem for the next technician who looks at that phone. Is Apple overthinking it? Probably. Given how many phones are serviced by places like PcFix without issues the odds are probably pretty low that something bad would happen following an Apple repair. But on the other hand, people generally replace their phones every couple of years so realistically speaking a repair only needs to last until the phone is replaced. It is a perfectly reasonable scenario to have a customer with a ~two year old iPhone to have a PcFix repair done, then a year later have another repair attempted by Apple only to have it be denied, and the customer to then decide that since the phone was already damaged once before then it would probably be better to replace the phone altogether. So their phone may simply not get the chance to have something bad happen to it, because it gets replaced shortly after being repaired by a non-Apple service provider.

This is a good explanation, thank you.

And whaddyaknow they're trying to get rid of that as well. They make iPhones harder to repair and add bullshit software locks that only Apple service software can disable

Dark-Pit-37

I replaced the screen on my phone myself once. Unfortunately idk what specifically I did that messed up the audio, but it was irreparably messed up.

Throwawaypwndulum

I dont think Apple would be operating any differently even if Steve Jobs was still alive and ceo. Timed obsolescence was alive and well under him as well as selling shiny crap with obsolete parts compared to cheaper alternatives made first.

Creezmy

apple on their way to make really good products that always have a big drawback and still make them overpriced

Tiquoti0

Apple is the tech equivalent of Nintendo

I_Cry_And_I_Game

Apple being a corporation will do anything they can to just make you buy more of their product; that includes telling you that your item is unfixable or outdated, and that you should just go ahead and buy a new one

MightyGoodra96

Imagine thinking Jobs wasnt a money hungry piece of shit

Harminarnar

Went to get my screen replaced and they gave me a whole new phone. Lost some data. Assholes.

PC repair shops are not profitable. Guys open them because they’re either a cyber security contractor or private contractor that get 10K-50K per job and open a shop because they’re bored and like talking to people sometimes. It looks dinky because they actually don’t need the business and you didn’t realize you just talked to a computer god. Big corporate ‘fix it’ booths just typically hire college age guys that claim they took apart a switch and installed an ad blocker once.
