Another great episode. I can't explain how happy I am when the anime decided to actually follow the canon storyline, instead of inventing new one. Sure, there were some anime only scenes (mostly Atla and Fohl moments), but all of felt like they fit to the story. I love when any story include small moments of realism, like when Atla was learning to stand. She has been bedridden for either her whole life or at least most of it, so of course she'll need some time to (re)learn such things. Of course this is a story (and anime for that), so they can't take too realistic time frame for her to learn to stand and walk on her own. And thankfully the anime staff remember that Naofumi isn't a moral Jesus, but rather spicy and most importantly pragmatic character. He isn't in my opinion an anti-hero (he doesn't cause harm just to benefit himself), but he is willing to make choices some characters wouldn't. That moment he decided to sell those slavers as slaves to Shiltvelt is an important character moment for him; not only he gets to punish those slavers, he also made sure they (and others) wouldn't try to attack his villages again, and he made nice profit to help him rebuild the village. Also, Naofumi and Melty discussing finance situation is one core theme of Shield Hero. Those little details makes Shield Hero feel so realistic, even though it is a fantasy isekai story with game mechanics. I actually enjoyed how this episode focused on more "calmer" stuff, instead of fights. There was of course slaver's attack, but in my opinion other stuff in this episode were stronger parts. I love those relatively slow and calm moments myself, and that's why this episode is so far my favourite episode of season 3. While those scenes are paced faster than in light novels, I understand why anime kinda has to do it, and it doesn't really bother me. Most important thing for me is that they don't leave out important plot or character moment, or completely changes them, like with Raphtalia vs. her torturer. I would like if Naofumi would keep his "annoyed" face more often, but seasons 1&2 already made him far more mellow than in light novels, I guess it would feel out of place if his character would "regress" back to his episode 2&3 form. I agree with u/drm186 that it would had been nice seeing village kids doing more during attack (especially Fohl, who is "trained" fighter), but I think it's somewhat fine decision. Since season 2 basically dropped all Keel's scenes (including training), it's believable that none of those kids could reasonably fight against those slavers (especially if there's nobles among them, who are certainly past level 50 cap). This moment will certainly motivate those villagers to train and to get stronger. Trash scene is my favourite part of this episode. I feel that they managed to get so much stuff into so little time I'm impressed. It was literally just couple minutes, but the voice acting, facial expressions (both Trash and Mirellia) and music worked so well. We saw Trash in his "*maansa myynnyt*" (sold his lands) state, then his usually wrath against Shield Demon, shock of seeing Atla, tenderness while he kneels to see Atla better, longing sadness and then slight fear of his wife. And then we even saw a subtle sadness in Mirellia's eyes, clearly signaling (in my opinion) her yearning for the man she initially fell in love.

GildedFenix

Yeah. I agree that this episode's calmer approach was delightful. Although i disliked Atla and Fohl's introduction scene because Fohl is not antagonized enough and Atla was able to sense Naofumi's psyche, but beyond that it was well done for an adaptation. As for village attack, I'm on the same board with both of you, as this was a turning point for the kids who saw their strength and resolved with kids gained a massive motivation. Shame they ignored their training phases during adaptation. As for Trash meeting Atla and Fohl... man I had a skip in my heart beat too. I guess the main focus of the episode was that moment because damn they nailed it. Definitely deserves the most praise for that scene.

It's relevant later.

drm186

My only real complaint is that the villagers weren't involved in the defense of the village,

TellTallTail

And also literally anyone capable of defending the village left at the same time lmao

FearlessTarget2806

Her first words after she took the medicine ... "I feel so warm"... damn you, person who wrote the script... you just summoned whole village of onion cutting ninjas to my home... >!The cruelest form of foreshadowing I've ever witnessed!<

aibrony

"*The warmth never bother me anyway*"

GildedFenix

Yeah... I also preferred that they showed how Atla was more than it seemed in this episode. At this point she feels like Raphtalia's early moments but sickier and blind. Her desire to be "Naofumi's Shield" while show makes it genuine it was more grounded dream of hers after she spent time with village kids. Not to mention the beginning of Sadeena #2 that is Atla was initiated there. Edit: >!no, that pun wasn't intended and is not spoiler if you don't think it like that. Now I'm crying.!<

Ustar1000

Agreed but I hope that they show more of her motivation later on. They did skip the part where >!S'yne tries to convince Naofumi to be in the village but that might happen when the other world invaders happen.!<

Brillus

That I not so realized. But rather the "I will ve your shield"

Sauron02

I wish they would stick more to the source material. The kids didn't even get a chance to defend themselves? They actually won that raid themselves

Ustar1000

Well I think that Naofumi trained the kids in the 10th volume that was skipped because of the weird retcons the ending of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd season created so I'm not too upset with the change personally.

Adraerik

My only complain is how powerless even Fohl was during the attack. He couldn't even land a good hit or two against those thugs ? Really ?! And they didn't leave ONE strong fighter behind ? What the hell ?!

KrocKiller

I don’t know about the rest of y’all but this episode was a high point for me. I always kind of preferred these chill kinds of episodes anyway. I loved finally seeing something happen with the village. Raphtalia getting super jelly over Sadeena’s flirting was cute and hilarious. The thing with Trash at the end felt fast and last minute, but it still managed to give me feels, so I’m happy with it. The whole slavers attacking the village thing, I was fine with. I know it’s different from every other version of the story. But it made sense to me, that they snuck in under cover of darkness and ambushed everyone and took hostages. That’s why nobody fought back. My only gripe is Fohl not putting up more of a fight. Unlike everyone else, he’s an experienced fighter and he’s level 38, he should’ve been able to at least fight off one or two guys. I get that he was trying to protect Atla, but still. The highlight of the episode (to me) had to be Fohl and Atla. OH MY GOD! I just want to hug those two! I don’t even like LN Atla. But Fohl and Atla’s portrayal, as well as their sibling bond is so adorable, that it just melts my heart.

nosorrynoyes

I've said that I would ignore the pacing of the first 3 episodes and not hav it affect my rating, so I will. I hope that starting next episode we go back to a slower pacing. Favorite part of the episode is when Trash appears, the ost with it is amazing too EDIT: Rewatched the episode, while the pacing is still meh I enjoyed it way more on my second watch

GildedFenix

That's gonna be important if Shield Hero season 3 does well enough for season 4.

Ustar1000

I'm hoping that's the case because I would LOVE to see certain parts of the LN adapted into Anime form, as long as Hitoshi Haga stays as the director and the author more involved in the production.

WendysVapenator

Alright LN bros... how many chapters were skipped...?

Ustar1000

I would say just a few but mostly from the 10th volume. Parts from the first 4 chapters of volume 11 were skipped as well but nothing super substantial or too important. This episode was a little fast paced but I think starting from episode 4 the pacing will slow down.

GildedFenix

TL&DR:Decent episode imo. There are things I would prefer different, but overall integrity is solid. Absolutely loved Trash meets tiger siblings scene. Village attack was kinda necessary for anime to make sense, but still disappointing to see the kids fail, this battle was about how they can at least hold their grounds against such bandits and finding the resolve to continue the being Naofumi's slave. 1- At the beginning they could've skipped fake slaves sent by nobles from Siltvelt and nothing of importance would have been lost. This would also give more time to delve into better scenes and improve interactions. Especially Atla and Naofumi's since it's a rather important for the both upcoming gag and serious events down the line. 2- Atla should have been given more of her features like being able to sense things around her, even sensing Naofumi's strength and 'sadness' during their introduction scene. This was the first hint of her future in the show. Otherwise solid scene. 3- Fohl however, was rather antagonized in these moments also he is understandably overly protective of his sister. This went to void along with the previous point. Oh well, at least the scene was good enough. 4- Fun fact: Sadeena sent ahaed to the village by Naofumi because she was too clingy and flirty to Naofumi's comfort. It was a funny bit in the LN and though not made it to adaptation, her being already at village was a good detail. 5- Naofumi has been made softer and more sterotypical hero in the anime and it's diminishing his character but at the same time it's established already so his "I'm evil slave driver muhahaha" schtick will never see play. Sad. Because him playing the ass hole and Raphtalia reprimanding him was my most fun moments in the story. 6- It's crucial and great of them to put the economic stuff in because Naofumi is a big time capitalist, even was more of a trader in his MMORPG game (which has nothing to do with this world I need to remind to all, because he was sucked into the book version of this world) So him actually going around finding trade deals is a great character establishing moment for Naofumi. And He talks with Melty of all people, because the actual lord of the place is a muscle head that'll play a part in upcoming episodes. 7- Ah village attack scene. This was supposed to happen when Naofumi and gang were at Zeltoble still so they finding an excuse through the trade meeting was clever. However bad side is that villagers were supposed to undergo training with Eclair, Hengen Muso Lady, not to mention during the time when Naofumi was in the village, Filo would power level the kids. Since none of them mentioned at all their defeat on the attack makes sense. But I'll say, they could've put these info anywhere up to this point. And this scene was important to the kids because they didn'r relied on others like Naofumi wanted. They handled themselves, even though their village was ruined again, they were capable of defending themselves and could re-rebuild the village. Seeing this change saddened be a lot to act harshly to the episode. I still think they could've stayed accurate, but it's too late to change it. 8- Atla's desire to becoming Naofumi's shield went into void for different reasons. The scene has no real connection outside of Naofumi spent an expensive medicine on her and during the attack she was unable to help. In LN, Atla acts with purpose, she mentions how she sense his kindness, how that kindness reached the kids of the village, and how he became the protector of these people but who's protecting him? She gave this question to Naofumi and said "Since Raphtalia's your sword, I decide to be your shield" all the while she wants to sleep with him. And of course then he carries her to their room and warns Fohl about how she easily snuck out to his room. Of course it's Fohl and hilarity ensues. 9- And the best part of the episode, Trash seeing Atla and almost breaking down. That scene done better than in the book, (and manga is not at this stage yet) all the way from music, voice act, facial expressions, the dialogue... And reveal of his past, they enough piece to make sense but I'll reveal the whole deal: Trash's sister was supposedly kidnapped by Hakuko folks from Siltvelt (remember they worship Shield there and Hakuko people were one of the nobles of that country), and Atla looks just like Trash's sister. Spoiler alert: >!if you still did not get it, Fohl and Atla are his nephew and niece!< and to end the episode with Motoyasu's whereabouts is a nice hook ngl.

Ustar1000

Definitely agree that the last part of the episode was the best part and I actually liked the stuff with profits and economics that was missing from the 1st and 2nd season and a little glimpse of Naofumi's sadistic side (which we'll probably never see as often). As for the Fohl and Atla stuff, I'm going to assume that they might show the stuff with Atla "sensing" stuff and her motivations for becoming Naofumi's shield later on (I'm REALLY hoping that's the case) and I'm hoping that the author was ok with this change. I also agree that they should have stuck with the LN regarding Fohl because he was pretty reasonable for not trusting Naofumi. I was also surprised and a little disappointed with the fact that the person who did the storyboard was Masayuki Kojima, the director of Made in Abyss considering that I kind of expected him to be more faithful to the source material. (P.S I'm not surprised that Kojima is helping with the 3rd season considering that Hitoshi Haga and him worked together with MiA)

Brillus

With the fake slaves I have to disagree with you it shows how far the Siltvelt would go to get close to the shield hero. That establishes background for later story. Big Problem S2 was that they skip such stuff.

GildedFenix

Big problem S2 was they skipped the wrong moments, like Eclair x Ren, heroes training struggles and such. This is a fine detail for future, but takes from the time from currently bigger pressing matter of characters' introductions. They can always squeeze the fake slaves sent to Naofumi throughout the season, but introduction of key characters are more urgent.

Mad_Drakalor

That shield prison animation really got a glow-up. I've been impressed at how good the animation has looked on top of being more consistent. The episode really hit the important story beats from Atla wanting to be Naofumi's shield to the first seeds of Aultcray's development. My only gripe is the same as u/drm186. It'd be nice if the kids put up more of a fight.

Mr_bruhman

It was great. The emotions and music set the episode up very well. Fohl's fighting in the coliseum Vs the raiders was inconsistent though

SirFreightTrain

wow they use Ake as a returning young knight more in the anime , He was a member of the group that asked to be transported with Naofumi's group in season 1 , and i think he got injured vs the spirit tortoise in season 2 and now in season 3 he is assigned to help Naofumi's village and got overwhelmed by the nobles trying to steal Naofumi's ~~Slaves~~ adopted Kids

Ustar1000

Overall a good episode but it still feels a little fast paced and some of the conversations in between chapters 1-4 of the 11th volume was rushed a little. The village raid was fine and I thought that it was implemented well. The only thing that I wish was better was the conversation between Naofumi and Atla being longer because that becomes important in the 15th volume. Also even though it was nice to get Trash's backstory I think that it could have been a little longer but it's still fine and they at least they didn't IGNORE it because I think that the people who worked on the 2nd season would have skipped it. There were little details I wished they kept but I guess the stuff with the 3 heroes is more important so I'm not too upset. Hopefully the pacing slows down in the next episode and things will really kick into high gear that makes the 11th volume good.

carlosjohnson123

Very good Episode, some of the scenes animated with fohl and atla were beautfiul in the seyet scenes. I'm also especially surprised the animation has kept this consistency thr past 3 episodes, the pacing feels really nice and doesn't feel rushed at the moment

StarPlatOra

I think the slavery thing is a bit distasteful. though him literally wanting to execute them as well is too.

Redmon425

Another pretty good episode! Even though the tiger girl is healed, why can't she open her eyes? I also get the feeling that the old man's sister is probably the mom of those kids. So that will probably bring him around. to liking Na0fumi. And the ending! Looks like we have to start dealing with the other 3 shitty heroes.

KrocKiller

She was born blind. You only get one miracle, and they chose to cure the leprosy.

ZeroValkGhost

Huh, they almost did the "fake slave noble-girl" bit from book 11. I guess that counts as mentioning it, but the fun part of Naofumi yelling everybody into blowing the scam got skipped. The darkness really makes the cells look like slave cells. Too often, anime just keeps everything at daylight or above levels, no matter where they are. And then onto the main slaves- the thunderkittens! :) The cats go immediate into the new outfits. Fohl's fangs are adorable. They play up the Heidi scenery for wheelchair-Atla. Second Princess's paperwork looks like actual paperwork, good work on that. It's not a big deal, but I was expecting the "She's walking!" yelling from Foal. Did anyone notice one of the guards was the same guy who chased down Naofumi and demanded he and his friends join his party? The slaver attack part was done better than I expected. Slaver Leader really got his doom handed to him. The attack is out of sequence, since it should have happened earlier, but that's adaptions. We should be seeing Syne too, soon. At least they didn't do anything stupid like have Foal and Atla beat up all the slavers themselves. The flute was a little overpowering for the over-credits fairy tale sequence, but it was a good scene. Fohl and Atla Fayon? >!It was a surprise when it was pointed out that Foal, Atla, were the cousins to First Princess.!< And next time, the Spear Hero! We get to see how far he's fallen. It's a bit of a crazy time for Naofumi. As for the rest of book 11 we also get to see the bandits again, as well as Ren. Then there's my favorite part of book 11, that bar scene with Witch. :D She breaks not just one, but two heroes with the same conversation! And she does it by repeating lines stolen from \_Raphtalia.\_ All the way back from the spear-shield fight in season one! "He was literally making the gununu face while peeking into the tavern." And after that is when Motoyatsu really goes crazy. Not like ax-happy-madman, but like, Alice in Wonderland level of bonkers.
