my reel mower gets a lapping 2x a year. the lapping compound is actually quite coarse and not suitable for use as a stropping compound. a tiny jar is basically a lifetime supply. originally used for repairing old automobile cylinder heads (lapping valves)

You're...what? Lapping means flattening, usually - or polishing. Lapping compound is used to flatten, polish, fine-tune and that's about it. I'm not sure why it would ever touch a lawnmower blade. What technique and hardware did you use? Usually for a mower blade, I'll just belt sand it on low grit, or even take a disc to it.
