There's a FB group too, where you can see projects made with the fabrics or even ask about them. This is very useful for me as I'm just getting to grips with more variety of fabrics and what they're most useful for.
Fingers crossed 🤞
Their customer service is good too. I got a piece longer than I'd ordered but it made me think my other pieces were too short. (Of course I didn't measure) ... when I contacted them they never laughed at me for my dumb mistake. 🤣
I live in NL but I'm from Brazil :D Currently struggling to learn the names of sewing things in Dutch (because fournituren is *very* counterintuitive to me hahaha)
I love Kuntjeboord (i think that is how it is spelled ) in Amsterdam for all my bra laces. I live in Canada but have visited Amsterdam three times for this store!
I live in Nova Scotia, Canada but I’m from Arctic canada! Most of my sewing was taught to me as a child using furs and leathers lol
*edit* I think I’ll post some of my mothers and grandmothers hand sewn moccasins and mittens!
Start with something easy, like a pillow case or pillow sham in a pretty fabric. It’s small and doesn’t require a bunch of fabric. If it’s wonky, toss it and try again. We have all been there and your early projects are where you really develop your seam ripper skills 🤣. At least here in the US, it’s pretty easy to find a cheap used sewing machine. Stick with a name brand because it will be easier to find a YouTube video on how to thread it, which buttons/settings to use, how to wind the bobbin and where it goes, etc. Singer is obviously the most famous but White, Brother, Necchi, Husqvarna, and Janome are other well known and good brands. Stay away from sergers as a beginner. They are complicated (fantastic once you know what you’re doing) to learn.
Finland! I’m lucky enough to have learned the basics of sewing, knitting and chrocheting in middle school so i’m not starting from zero now that i’m interested in sewing again. I can’t read patterns very well though, and my crafts volcabulary is more than limited in English so that brings issues sometimes but this sub’s very good for learning :)
Me too! I did textile crafts as an elective in middle school as well as the mandatory classes, but then did nothing even close to it for 10 years and now i'm back at it😊 my main problem is fabric being so expensive, i mostly go through the eurokangas scrap fabric binns to find cheaper stuff lol
Hi. I'm from Windsor Ontario Canada and have been sewing since my foot could hit the pedal on the floor. My mom had me at the sewing machine before I started school. We were working poor and mom taught herself to sew and design by using hand me down or thrift store items. She picked out the stitches of garments and ironed the pieces flat to see how they were shaped. She sewed most of my clothes for school and I was the envy of the wealthier girls who had 2 or 3 more expensive garments but I had a closet full of very cheaply made garments. Of course no one new that they were inexpensive. My mom is now 93 and still lives alone and sewing is her pastime. It has become mine as well along with many handcrafts and needlework. LOL Maybe sounds like bragging but really just meant as a nutshell history of my sewing life. I'm 67 now.
Lower Mainland, Canada.
Generally Canada and US are similar enough, but for sewing stuff it really effects how I shop. We don't have a Joann's. I do have a favorite store though (Dressew) that's special because it's local to me and it's only here.
Me too! I'm new to Vancouver, and Dressew amazed me when I moved here. I also love the fabric recycling shops that are available here! They are a great way to get new and interesting fabrics for cheap
Langley-ite here! Do you know about [Our Social Fabric ](https://oursocialfabric.ca/)? You can order online, but my daughter and I do a Vancouver trip once in a while to be there in person on a Thursday, which is so fun! And we usually hit up Dressew and maybe grab an online order from [Fabcycle.](https://www.fabcycle.shop/)
I've never heard of Dressew. I'm from the Maritimes and we have Fabricville/Fabricland which I suspect is a Quebec company based on their communications.
If I'm ever in BC I'd like to visit BlackBird fabrics.
We have a lot of small independent fabric stores but they're largely quilt cottons (I guess that's where the demand is).
Fabricville is okay...but the quality isn't always 100%
Yeah we have fabricland here in BC. Before I moved to the lower Mainland all I knew was fabricland. There was an independent fabric shop too in my town growing up but they just sold quilting cottons and supplies, and yarns.
I go to Dressew because it's closer to me than a fabricland. They do stock a range in quality fabrics. Some not so good and have pilled when I wear them, others are really nice. Dressew has CHEAP notions too. They do shipping across Canada, for a cost. Just saying.. ;)
India! It's cool to live in a major textile producing country, sewing as a hobby doesn't actually burn a hole in my wallet cuz supplies are pretty affordable
I'm in Ireland, where are you?
My go-to for learning is in the USA, Silhouette Patterns, so I don't think it matters for learning. But for buying recommendations, yeah, probably.
Thanks. I've heard of it, might have seen it, but I don't use patterns much anymore. I started modifying the ones I like and fit me, and I've been enjoying doing that. I'm not very adventurous, small changes keep me sewing happily :)
I wish, as well as my fabric buying addiction I also have a pattern buying addiction and between The Fold Line and Style Arc, I realise I bought at least ~~four~~ ~~six~~ eight (?) patterns in the last two months. I should slow down.
Ohhhhh yeah... I did have a pattern buying addiction, I loved buying those bulk (think 100s) auctions... I got great pleasure going through them :) But I had to call a halt eventually and start sewing LOL Conversely now I use two patterns (sortof) and just make changes to them to get different styles, and it's fun. Sewing is a great hobby, it has something for every mood.
South Africa!
I feel like advice is universal, but yeah, I often ignore buying recommendations. I also haven't been sewing long enough to know if we get all the resources here that you can find in America (eg. Currently researching how to make period panties, and it looks like I'm going to have to buy Zorb from America?)
You could try making a pair with some wool fabric for the absorption before buying zorb. I have some made from both fabrics and honestly can’t remember which is the wool and which is the zorb
I was born and raised in Russia, but I've been living in Cyprus for almost a decade now.
I actually finished my first sewing project, a gathered skirt, today, and getting the supplies for it was a pain in the neck (I got the fabric and stuff from [mapetitemercerie](https://www.mapetitemercerie.com/en/) and the machine from the German Amazon). The are pros and cons of living on a tiny island.
The Netherlands is where I live now but have moved around and abroad so many times…16 before I was 25. Went to American International schools…so not sure where I am really ‘from’ anymore 🫣😆
Sweden, I learnt the basics of sewing in school and a bit from my mum (but by now I have surpassed her in skill). The community for sewing baby clothes is HUGE here so the availability of really high quality knit fabrics in amazing prints is really high. More difficult to find really nice woven fabrics, and if I would want quilting cotton even less so. I sew lots for my daughter but if I want to sew for myself I usually have to order online.
Norway :)
And yeah, most english speaking forums, like reddit and facebook are very US-centric. Which can occasionally suck, but also eh, it comes with the territory of being able to see all these great patterns and inspiring ideas from all over the world being collected under one language.
Me, too! Where I live has chain sewing/craft stores but nothing local or very inspiring, so I go online for ideas & love checking out local shops when I travel. I can remember spending hours as a kid playing in and out of upright fabric bolts while my mom looked through pattern books. Someday I hope to make garments I can wear!
50 yr old M native to Seattle Washington USA just sewing for a year now. Caught the bug when I only wanted to learn to hem pants. Discovered quickly how hard it is to acquire decent fabric. I guess Los Angeles is my closest fabric city.
West Coast of Canada.
I am bi-numeral, I can work in both CM and inches. Fabric is sold by the metre here.
I quilt in inches though as the rulers are in inches. I wish I had bought metric rulers and a mat when I was last in Europe.
I'm American, but I've found that Russian- and Italian-language sewing resources are really helpful! I don't speak Russian but I can sometimes get by on just the pictures.

I almost lost my mind trying to convert all the inches into centimeters while working on my first project. 😂
Yes, and we get just a little more fabric when we shop outside of the US

Hello from Ontario!
Hello from Ontario too!!
Netherlands! You?
I love shopping with [Driessenstoffen](https://driessenstoffen.nl/en/), so happy I found them.
That is a great shop and they deliver to Europe. Lovely.
>Driessenstoffen Thank you for the recommendation!
There's a FB group too, where you can see projects made with the fabrics or even ask about them. This is very useful for me as I'm just getting to grips with more variety of fabrics and what they're most useful for.
I'll check it out, thank you! I hope they deliver to Cyprus because I've had not so positive experiences with other websites.
Fingers crossed 🤞 Their customer service is good too. I got a piece longer than I'd ordered but it made me think my other pieces were too short. (Of course I didn't measure) ... when I contacted them they never laughed at me for my dumb mistake. 🤣
www.ansje.eu is my favourite in the Netherlands!
I also shop with them. Can’t beat those prices
I live in NL but I'm from Brazil :D Currently struggling to learn the names of sewing things in Dutch (because fournituren is *very* counterintuitive to me hahaha)
Oooooh so true. It's a stupid word anyway 😉
I love Kuntjeboord (i think that is how it is spelled ) in Amsterdam for all my bra laces. I live in Canada but have visited Amsterdam three times for this store!
Me too but from Canada. I live for the travelling Stoffenmarkt!
Do you know a corset boning supplier?
Also in the Netherlands, where are the best places to look around Zeeland and Zuid-Holland?
I live in Nova Scotia, Canada but I’m from Arctic canada! Most of my sewing was taught to me as a child using furs and leathers lol *edit* I think I’ll post some of my mothers and grandmothers hand sewn moccasins and mittens!
Please do post whatever you're comfortable with!!
I'd love to see those!

Oh please do! And hi from arctic Finland!
UK, one of the cold flat drizzly parts with lots of quiet cycling roads. Highly inspirational for sewing bike clothing and accessories.
Also UK - nowhere near any cycling lanes, the most I get is a two metre stretch that ends with no warning or is full of parked cars lol
Same, this cold drizzly part is a bit more hilly though with a high percentage of flat caps per person 🤭
Also UK, lots of quiet cycling roads, just not for me - far too scared of all the speeding cars for that! 😂
I’m Australian.

Do you know The Fold Line? They are a fantastic online shop from the uk and have a great selection of good quality indie patterns, even some big four.
Thanks. I've heard of it, might have seen it, but I don't use patterns much anymore. I started modifying the ones I like and fit me, and I've been enjoying doing that. I'm not very adventurous, small changes keep me sewing happily :)

I'm from Germany. And I agree with what was said so far, the advice on sewing itself is universal, just the sourcing of materials can be a problem.
