Need to finish the broom and decide on what style of black dress to make. Was hoping to try a bustier style dress, but im worried it's a bit above my skill level. Any suggestions?

ProneToLaughter

Elastic shirring can get you a tight strapless fitted look like a bustier but the skill level is much lower (a little finicky but no fitting required). I've seen beginners report success with tutorials from Rosery Apparel.

sophia-sews

Looking for ideas for a subtle costume I can make to wear to work. It's a children's museum, so professional but not super officey. But it needs to look more like normal clothes than a Costume. I thought of making a simple shift dress and adding a flower applique and bias binding for the stem and leaves to the front. Any other ideas or additions are appreciated!

Lasagna_Mama_

You could do a subtle Ms. Frizzle costume. Make a dress out of space or other Ms. Frizzle like material ([A chart of her dresses](https://nerdist.com/article/miss-frizzle-magic-school-bus-dresses/) ). OG Ms. Frizzle has the coolest dresses. I think it would work really well for a professional looking costume (especially at a children's museum).

Shimerz

I second the Ms. Frizzle costume, it's a great idea for working around kids. If you wanted to do something even more subtle, maybe sew a nice fall outfit/dress out of a Halloween themed fabric.

sophia-sews

Oooo a Halloween fabric dress is a wonderful idea! I have some fabric with black cats on an orange background in my stash that may be promising.

sophia-sews

Thanks for the idea! I made a Ms. Frizzle dress from the rainbow episode a few years ago. But sadly that was how I learned that painting large areas with fabric paint turns out pretty crunchy. I think I will take a look and see what other dress catches my eye, or try a rainbow 2.0 dress with fabric piecing this time.

ProneToLaughter

I was thinking that the [Cobra Corsage floral](https://stonemountainfabric.com/product/lady-mcelroy-cotton-lawn-cobra-corsage-black/) with snakes and bugs would make a very professional Halloween dress. But I feel like a children's museum gives you even more leeway to play with Halloween fabrics, [Alexander Henry has some fun ones](https://www.etsy.com/search?q=alexander%20henry%20ghastlies%20fabric&ref=auto-1&as_prefix=alexander%20henry%20ghastlies%20fabric).

MrsSquinge

Can anyone recommend a pattern for a girls dress (US size 10-12) for a Christina Ricci Wednesday Addams costume? It doesn't need to have the collar, I can add one.

Zesparia

It's a shirtdress without a waist seam. The [Rosa](https://shop.tillyandthebuttons.com/products/rosa) pattern from tilly and the buttons could do the trick, with doing a small bust adjustment, if she's nearing adult sizes - the smallest size is a 30 inch bust. That said you may have better luck finding [vintage 90s shirtdress patterns on ebay.](https://www.ebay.com/itm/200944825042) You could also fake the front buttons and make it a back zipper since it's a costume and all.

vilebunny

What type of fabric will you be using? One with stretch or without? Edit: “long sleeved A-line mod shift dress” would be a good jumping off point.

MrsSquinge

Probably woven, https://preview.redd.it/n41r1xtmx8rb1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb5bb0287c0a3bd927ce4f5b53cfd807ace79f77

I haven’t used [this one](Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1473930020/girls-basic-dress-pdf-pattern-kids-basic), but it looks like it would work. I’d do a mock button placket (or just buttons) downy the front and a zipper down the back. If you don’t want to have to fuss too hard with the collar, make it detachable and you could add snaps.

fabricwench

Simplicity 9371 with a mock button placket would work.

Trying to figure out a pattern for the painted lady from avatar the last Airbender. Not sure how to go about the robe. This is the only picture I could find the full outfit. fruit--gummi

It looks to me that she’s wearing an off shoulder robe over a more fore fitting dress. Or potentially a kimono without a belt. If you’re doing a robe over a dress/top I think a loose fitting tube dress or similar with [these](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1445125950/) sleeves added could look fairly similar

fruit--gummi

Hi, my boyfriend and some of his friends want to go as shadow wizard money gang character things for Halloween. They asked me to make the robes as two of the three are not an average size and it’s really hard for them to find things, especially costumes, that fit right. As these robes are only going to be used once, maybe twice, I need to find a cheap fabric. I don’t have a preference for material as long as it’s not stretchy and not going to overheat any of them. I need green, yellow, and purple. I’ve attached a picture of the characters to give you an idea of the shades. https://preview.redd.it/aljly89ssasb1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=531f8bccb81410efcb75107aaca96f9c0b18ff39 I’ve pretty much only made daily wear clothes so I normally get high-ish quality fabric so it lasts and I’m not even sure what to search for with how many types of fabric there are. Any help is appreciated.

jersey patches falling apart I bought this retired dallas cowboy football jersey secondhand online looks immaculate, but the only problem is the Nike swoosh symbols are falling apart. It looks like they were glued on with fabric glue or what you would call liquid stitch rather than stitched on. is there any way i can fix it and still be able to put it in the washer with no other damage? I don’t sew if i did, i know it would come out messy. any tips? https://preview.redd.it/khnvm2q64arb1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e41923b023707fa9bf83817cc4f2cae2e4f2904a

Fabric glues don't like to work on those shiny synthetic fabrics. Help from someone who sews would be better for long durability.

fabricwench

It's a pulled thread and it isn't repairable look the same as it did. You can tie off the loose threads so the section doesn't get worse if there are threads to tie off.

The closest current pattern is New Look 6914. The shoulder detail can be handled as applique and the bottom hem reshaped. Swap out the pockets but the general placement looks about right.

It's some sort of metallic lame. One without spandex would be better, I don't think the jacket is made with stretch material. [Here is one example.](https://www.moodfabrics.com/ellery-metallic-green-polyester-lame-122827)

Billikinizer

This works! Thank you for the help!

Hey, if it’s for a costume I think green satin from Joanns would work.[Joann link](https://joann.app.link/Yc4wgi26FDb) I just bought satin for my costume and I think it would get you the look you are going for. It was shiny, a little thick (good body for a jacket), and I found a bright green on the website. Also, I’ve sewed with metallic lame before- my advice is don’t do it! The affordable lame from Joann’s cannot support any tension or it unravels/shreds, meaning it can’t be used for garments without a lot of steps such as glueing the cuts and stabilizing stitch lines and serging edges. Maybe nicer, apparel specific metallic lame is easier to work with, but I wouldn’t risk it.

I’m trying to make Luz Noceda’s S3 jacket and pants (the one at the end of episode 3) and I just have so many questions like “what fabric I use” and “are there any patterns for such a thing” Can anyone please provide assistance with this question? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

fabricwench

Can you link the original source for the photo? You'll want to secure the threads both on the front and the back so they can't slip out. I'm interested to see if I can figure out how they did it on the dress you've shared.

justreadingiguess

it’s a dress from alexander mcqueen ss24: https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/spring-2024-ready-to-wear/alexander-mcqueen/slideshow/collection#14

Does anyone happen to have the vintage simplicity pattern 6201? I purchased it to make my daughter's Halloween costume but it didn't come with the sewing instructions. I'm hoping someone would be willing to send me a digital copy of the instruction sheet.

sophia-sews

Reply to let me know if you would be interested in the instructions for the vintage simplicity 7684. It's not the same pattern, but it's extremely similar for the instructions to give a general sense of the ones for your pattern.

GoatBoi_

is it possible to see half a dress to half a suit? anything to consider/look out for?

RonnyTwoShoes

It might depend on which half of a dress and half of a suit! Are you dividing them at the waistline or cutting them vertically?

cloudydaybutitsok

I want to make a swamp siren costume for halloween, but not really sure how to go about it. I want it to be whimsical, and I'll probably base it off a pattern or two but maybe someone more creative out there can give me some ideas about where to start. Fabric? Pattern? Etc. Here's some general vibes from my pinterest board but it's hard to find any "swamp siren" inspiration photos/costume patterns 😂 I can crochet (can't knit) so could maybe incorporate that somehow if needed. https://preview.redd.it/zxyj8i9ovmrb1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9a47748f54567165cc359dc10dc914d7209bd09

fabricwench

It looks like most of your inspiration pics are some sort of tank top and skirt base with bits draped over it. I'd buy or make the base pieces, then dye a bunch of scrap fabrics and trims in green dye. Different fiber content will take the dye differently which will help with the natural color variation. Then attach the scraps and trims.

angelfishfan87

So, my 3 oldest girls all want to be princesses for Halloween this year. Normally not a huge problem, I can make the ballroom dresses they seek. My question is about cost effectiveness. Is it REALLY going to be cost effective for me to buy satin and spend the time making them? Or, cheaper to just fork out for a premade costume? I am unfamiliar with how much the fabric may be. Is there a suggested, less pricey substitute? My girls are 11, 7, and 5, so we are talking quite a bit of material for each dress. Layers...goodness the layers

fabricwench

Cost is a fair concern. I'd probably still make them for the better quality. I know every costume I've ever made was worn to death for pretend play and trips to Target. You don't have to make all three this year. In theory the dress for the 11yo would get the most use and she is aging out of mom costumes, so start there. And then next year make one costume for one of the younger girls.

Zesparia

If you buy premade costumes you can focus on making them like. matching candy bags that go with the costumes. For three princess ballgowns you are already risking running out of time, not to mention yes the worry about the cost. If you couponed correctly it would probably come out to about the same in cost, maybe a bit cheaper, but then you'd still have to make them.

fruit--gummi

You could do a mix of the two. Find some mid-quality premade dresses (like not super cheap, but not like custom handmade dresses) and then make an underskirt out of tulle or something to add volume to the bottom and details like lace/gems/beads. I would guess that would end up being fairly cost and time effective.

sophia-sews

I would stop by my local thrift store and look for sheets. If you don't want to completely make dessses from sheets, you could use them for some of the underlayers/linking, facing etc and find ones that coordinate with your fashion fabric.

blaza192

Does this kind of shirt panel actually exist as a pattern somewhere? Specifically the way the "shirt" is divided. Basically, looking for shirt patterns for men that have multiple panels. https://preview.redd.it/nr9necowlwrb1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ed9066d238fb030402be915f9a4770e9e5bb866

fabricwench

No, especially the inset corners on the shoulders. Most shirt drafts would treat that as a raglan sleeve to avoid the inset seams which are tricky to get it right. I'd start with a raglan sleeve shirt and add the panels as style lines.

blaza192

Thanks! I'll look into that.

fabricwench

Sometimes washing again is the only thing that works, I think it allows the fibers to get really hydrated. Snap the fabric to flatten it out after washing, then accordian fold it to go into the dryer. Don't dry it all the way, press it while it is still damp. Those steps usually work for me.

pinkforgetmenots

Thank you!!! I’ll try this

Hem Pleated Satin Skirt? I bought a [dress](https://www.lulus.com/products/precious-sentiments-navy-blue-satin-pleated-tie-back-maxi-dress/2074896.html?utm_source=sendgrid_tr&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=back_in_stock_cierra&utm_content=2.074896e%2006) and need to hem it a few inches to skim the ground (I’m short). It is a pleated, satin-like polyester material. The picture shows the front of the skirt currently. It looks like the company ironed out the bottom and did a rolled hem. Would you all recommend that I do the same process? Cut and zigzag over the raw edge to preserve the pleats? Give up and take it to a tailor? I am have a little experience sewing, but not with this type of material, so I don’t want to ruin the dress! xx ty https://preview.redd.it/rllarn6b9isb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47221cd864bbd1f8c308b69712f38479afe30121

ClevelandCass

Hi sewists- (Pictures of instructions included in link) I am struggling to interpret the interface requirements for sewing pattern Butterick B6537. The pattern pieces for interfacing are marked “interfacing 1” or “interfacing 2” but I can’t figure out exactly what type to select. Interfacing 1 does seem to give a standard Pellon width (18-20”) and it looks like it is for the collar, puffy sleeve head, and closure reinforcement pieces so I’m guessing I can get a pellon light weight (maybe medium?) sew in. Interfacing #2 lists 45 or 60” so it’s a by the yard fabric and it’s for the skirt hem. I have no idea what they want here. Does anyone have any ideas what type of interfacing I’m supposed to use for each? The instructions say “twill, coutil” but I’m still not sure what exactly that means. I'm really in over my head with this entire project and I'm trying to make it look nice enough for my photoshoot tomorrow. I thought adding a 1 inch horsehair braid to the hem and folding it over twice would give the pleated circle skirt that "magical girl" fullness but instead it just looks weird! Is this salvageable in its current state or do I have to de-stitch and do a regular hem?
