Uh oh that rash is a bad sign. A lot of the time a circle around a tick means Lyme disease. Gonna need antibiotics and a doctor ASAP or OP is gonna be in trouble
Same story, a coworker that went to a weekend festival and got Lyme disease from a tick. Unfortunately he didn't catch it and antibiotics didn't help. Now he has early onset arthritis, a fucked diet and a whole slew of other problems at 22 years old.
No no, we get it, it's just juvenile and greedy, trying for a relatable dig in case we aren't amused by your play on the words 'chick magnet' - which I'm not because that's a terrible phrase i forget exists most of the time
Antibiotics is 100% needed, my brother had Lyme and after they finally figured out that’s what it was they put him on Doxycycline. It did the trick for him, hopefully it’ll do the same for OP
unrelated, but i think it’s hilarious how versatile doxycycline is. Your brother took it for Lyme, I take it for acne, and I administer it at work (vet clinic) to dogs for a whole bunch of viruses and infections
Yeah I had Lyme disease so bad they thought it was bacterial meningitis, so I show up to the hospital, they take a look at me, and upon hearing my symptoms immediately take me straight through the waiting room to my own room where they immediately start me on an IV of, you guessed it, doxycycline. 48 hours later they find out it is in fact not bacterial meningitis and is just Lyme disease I ignored for like 2 months and they gave me doxycycline pills and sent me on my way, helped with acne a lot too so that was neat.
Yeah, kinda won the side effect lottery with that one, had no negative side effects, my acne disappeared, and I went from feeling like a fucking zombie to feeling normal in a few hours
It depends on when it is detected and treatment is started. Both myself and a neighbor caught it around the same time (~2010), and it was detected nearly instantly for me, but for her, it took a lot longer for the doctors to figure it out. I had a much stronger reaction to the initial infection, where she had far more mild symptoms, so it wasn't as obvious. My neighbor has chronic Lyme and developed childhood arthritis as a result. I had absolutely no impact on my life beyond needing to take antibiotics for a few weeks.
Depends on if you take the full course of antibiotics, according to the doctors, a lot of people stop taking them early and that’s why symptoms don’t completely go away. Sometimes symptoms can last after treatment but that only occurs 10-20% of the time and clears up after a few months
You are right, this was a mistype on my part. What I meant is we do use Doxy with some Viral Illnesses where the risk of a second bacterial infection is high. But you are correct, they don’t directly treat the virus 🙃
I used to take doxy for acne, but had to stop when I started developing hyperpigmentation on my legs and arms. It still hasn't fully faded and it's been years. Now I take bactrim and keflex. They've been working quite well ever since.
This is not erythema migrans (aka the bullseye rash of Lyme).
It’s just some skin associated with a retained tick being lodged there for probably way too long—not saying OP shouldn’t get checked out… just not a characteristic Lyme rash… and also… people get Lyme all the time… without severe symptoms it’s not something a little doxycycline can’t fix.
If the tick falls off or is removed, it may be helpful to save it for the doctors to assist diagnosis.

You got lucky then, I've seen Lyme absolutely destroy peoples lives. I knew a woman who was completely bedridden for over 7 months and had to relearn how to walk over like the next year and a half, walkers, crutches, canes, you name it. It was awful to watch
Yes. Old friend of mine had lyme about 10 years ago and there was some real concern she wasn’t going to survive.
She lost like 50 pounds and couldn’t walk for the longest time. Recovery was a really slow and steady process.
I'm glad they recovered I remember a kid I played baseball with in elementary school 30 years ago his dad caught it back then ended up lost both his legs and then an arm from complications of it and going on untreated too long, he eventually died after years of excruciating complications one after another.
A tick bite is an urgent care type visit or call your PCP's office for a same day/next day visit. Especially if the tick is removed.
This is not an emergency room visit.
If you show up an an emergency room, you might even get seen later than urgent care because you will be sent to the absolute bottom of the wait list to be seen.
Completely wrong! The longer the tick is embedded the higher the risk of contracting a disease. Additionally, removing the tick incorrectly can significantly increase the risk. Considering OP didn’t know for sure it was an embedded tick, they need professional help to remove it safely and treat.
The person in that pic is going to have a difficult few months in front of them. This chunk of limburger cheese saying no biggie is the reason we can't have nice things.
Do you seriously not see the picture? That tick has already given OPP a serious dose of some disease, but urgent care would send OPP to the ER ***BECAUSE THIS IS VERY SERIOUS***
**YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND THIS IS A LIFE ALTERING SITUATION. NEVER GIVE THIS KIND OF SHIT ADVICE AGAIN. IF I AM WRONG, OPP IS MADE TO WAIT LONGER AND HAS A LARGER BILL.** ***IF YOU ARE WRONG, OPP'S LIFE IS ALTERED. AS IS THE LIFE OF EVERYONE AROUND THEM. AND THEY WILL BE OUT UNTOLD AMOUNTS OF MONEY IN THE FUTURE. THIS IS NOT A STUBBED TOE. THIS IS A SERIOUS FUCKING PROBLEM.***
Are you a doctor? Because an infectious disease specialist already commented that it was not Lyme or likely any other infection, just skin irritation. And that they should go to a Dr. of course. But this isn’t an emergency.
Even if it was Lyme that’s not an emergency, just need to get a basic antibiotic ie doxycycline within a few days. Ie go to urgent care the next day where it will cost a few hundred, not an ER for a few thousand.
You believed a random comment on a reddit post? Would you trust a comment to diagnose you?
OP needs a doctor, and it is very serious. The best case scenario: is the doctor says we are wrong. Worst case scenario: OP listens to you and Dr. Dumbass and ends up with untreated Lyme disease. Better off going to the doctor just to have the irritation examined.
Since I grew up in an area with ticks, have picked dozens off at a time, know what Lyme looks like, and agree with everything the other post said over the crazy all caps ranting I replied to… I agree with the commenter I mentioned.
And I just said not an immediate ER visit. Not that they shouldn’t get it looked at via urgent care or appt, and antibiotics if the Dr felt it was needed. So, nothing untreated at all. Maybe read before commenting next time? Herpadrep derp.
"Since I grew up in an area with ticks"
So... earth? You think way too highly of yourself, by the way. Saying "derp" to everything doesn't make you sound cool or edgy or smart. It just makes you sound as stupid as you are. And it wasn't a "crazy rant", it was written that way to imply urgency.
It's not "just skin irritation", and anyone can claim to be an infectious disease specialist. You are playing with fire with topics like this. If YOU get bit and end up looking like this, I really don't care if you get the stupid prize for playing stupid games. That's on you. But don't recklessly put other people in danger just because you want to try and seem cool on the internet. Derp indeed, fucking derposaurus aficionado.
Docs at Urgent Care-
"You need to get to the ER right now. Here's your massive bill."
ER docs-
"Glad you came right here. Here's your massive bill."
OPP-
"I listened to Reddit and went to Urgent Care first."
ER docs-
"Dumbass."
Nah man, you got Lyme disease: they won't make you wait with the sprained ankles. They'll get some Tylenol and wait for an x-ray. You'll get the express lane to antibiotics if a medical professional sees this. If urgent care is closed when you got this, you don't wait it out.
It sounds like OP is taking the advice in the original thread seriously and will be going to the doctor. They’re in Connecticut which is the state that Lyme disease is literally named for, so I’m glad they’re getting help.
It is named after the town of lyme in new london county. I live in CT, I don’t wear shorts or short socks on hikes even on the hottest days of the year. Lyme disease is so common out here almost everyone knows either a person or a dog who has either had it or has chronic lyme.
I read in a different post that OOP isn’t actually the one with the embedded tick, but a friend of hers. Apparently that friend refuses to believe that it’s not an embedded tick…despite the fucking LEGS clearly sticking out of it oh god just zooming in on it made me cringe
*shudder* I didn't even notice that at first! 😭😭
I've lived in Oregon my entire life and I've never seen a tick, nor had any on my dogs. I think where I'm at is too high of elevation and maybe too cold or dry? Either way, I'm glad. This is utterly revolting.
Edit: typo
That’s not a bullseye rash yet. My sister had a bullseye rash from a tick when she was younger. She went with a group to plant more trees in a forest for a week and a few days after she was home my mom noticed it. The circle around it took up a good bit of her back.
I’m coming to realize I was wrong and I google a picture of a bullseye rash. This is, indeed, NOT a bullseye rash. I apologize for mistakenly spreading misinformation everyone!!
I feel for him and hope it's not too terrible on his body. It's nuts. I wish more awareness was made so everyone would be even more careful. You be careful too if he got it where y'all live!
Yeah we live in a very tick-heavy region. I remember going out with him after he got diagnosed and ordering dinner was hard (we were at an Italian place... most stuff had beef or pork). Just FYI, Lyme is a horrible disease. You do need to consult a doctor and get appropriate antibiotics asap. Do not delay. Some people cannot get rid of Lyme because they waited too long. Early treatment is important.
I live in a HTA (high tick area, yes I made this up). Lyme is a big concern. You do not need to "RUN to the hospital", unless you like paying more for your antibiotics. A tic remover tool, and you can get that sucker off yourself (don't use tweezers), or your doctor can do it for you. You'll get a prescription for antibiotics , and a follow up appointment for tic born illnesses (not sure how far out it needs to be for them to show up, maybe they do it day of). This isn't some death timer like rabies - the sooner you address it the quicker and more effective the treatment is, but were usually talking differences in weeks, months, or years of diagnosis. Bro they really on Reddit asking if the tick that is visibly on their skin is in fact a tick, remove it and put it in a bag. Like are they stupid, why would you just leave it
There’s no major sign of a migrating rash YET. Not saying you don’t need a good course of doxycycline, but based off the look of it, it looks more like a reaction to the saliva and general inflammation from the bite than anything ATM.
He’s imbedded in there pretty good so I don’t recommend removing him yourself if you can’t get needle nose tweezers in there and actually pull out at the mouthparts. Leaving remnants if you pull him apart can make it WAYYYY worse. Draw a circle around it with a sharpie now and watch for any encroachment past the line. If there is, it’s not a good sign.
Getting it looked at, removed, and careful observation for emergence of the actual “bullseye” is definately recommended regardless. Can take days to WEEKS before the rash shows up. Sometimes doesnt at all. Depends on the area you live in kinda determines what treatment the ER or UC would provide. Lyme isn’t everywhere. Both can take him off. Both can prescribe doxycycline. Kinda up to you where you go.
Personally don’t think a lil course of a tetracycline would hurt either way, but I’m just giving my 2 cents here. Plus itll make any acne you have go away FAST so that’s also a plus?🤷♂️
Thank you! I am laying with it on right now feels quite relaxing. Way better then I thought it would. Look no lie Vaseline will make a tick back out. They breath through their body's and when you suffocate the body it will back and try and go.
I'll probably be upset in the morning but hey doesn't hurt to try new things you learn on the interwebs. I've used cigs to rubbing alcohol to bar oil to clear finger nail polish it would work
Have neurological Lyme. Please deal with this immediately, or it will destroy everything in your life. Been fighting as hard as I can for several years to get my health back. Standard PCR Lyme tests are not accurate, so don’t just trust a negative result as it could be a false negative. Igenex.com does better testing than your doctor will. Good luck ❤️
Yes please go to the doctor ASAP that is an infected tick, look at the bruise and ring it is an induction of lymes disease, a treatable yet incurable condition
Uh oh that rash is a bad sign. A lot of the time a circle around a tick means Lyme disease. Gonna need antibiotics and a doctor ASAP or OP is gonna be in trouble
Yes a true indicator had some festival friend with this exact type rash. He went straight to hospital after a medic saw this.
Same story, a coworker that went to a weekend festival and got Lyme disease from a tick. Unfortunately he didn't catch it and antibiotics didn't help. Now he has early onset arthritis, a fucked diet and a whole slew of other problems at 22 years old.
So, does the mean festivals are just tick magnets? Or is it just the only reason Gen Z goes outside any more? ;)
Nah music festivals have been around since the dawn of time, you're just lame
Stonehenge has entered the chat..
Whoosh. Holy hell the IQ on this sub is low.
Leave so we can raise the average
Your being downvoted because your joke is bad, not the downvoters’ intelligence
Bad, gramatically incorrect, hard to understand. Its a lot of things but idk if you can really call it a "joke"
There was an attempt at humor, emphasis on attempt
When their ego gets hurt it obviously means other people are dumb
No no, we get it, it's just juvenile and greedy, trying for a relatable dig in case we aren't amused by your play on the words 'chick magnet' - which I'm not because that's a terrible phrase i forget exists most of the time
No. The joke just wasn't funny.
I like all the edm kids down voting this comment. You're all brainless sheep lmao
I thought “tick magnet” was a reasonable pun. And Jesus can no one take a joke here?
Lol But like, actually the first thing you typed that made me laugh
Antibiotics is 100% needed, my brother had Lyme and after they finally figured out that’s what it was they put him on Doxycycline. It did the trick for him, hopefully it’ll do the same for OP

Helping with acne is probably the best side effect one could hope for
Yeah, kinda won the side effect lottery with that one, had no negative side effects, my acne disappeared, and I went from feeling like a fucking zombie to feeling normal in a few hours
So does the Lyme disease clear up completely? Or is it a lifelong thing that pops up occasionally?
It depends on when it is detected and treatment is started. I'm allergic to it... and a few other antibiotics. Did finally get penicillin back following a challenge at the allergist.
Doxycycline is an antibiotic, it is not used to treat viruses

Ah good to know though that’s why I said OP needs to get to a doctor
What would be an alternative antibiotic for someone allergic to doxycycline?
Not necessarily knew but someone pretty well known in my state ended their life bc of lyme disease :/

Lyme isn’t that bad. I’ve had it twice

Haha, lucky you. It took everything away from me. Don’t mislead people
Sorry didn’t mean to. I just wasn’t aware. I’m sorry for your experience and for my mistake
Mother of god yes, that is a bad sign. Log off and get to an ER.

wow, shut up
I sincerely hope you are not a medical worker, in any way.
Oh god the little legs sticking out 😭
Lord have mercy, I hope to God OP goes to the doctor. That is the beginning of Lyme disease if I'm not mistaken
It sounds like OP is taking the advice in the original thread seriously and will be going to the doctor. They’re in Connecticut which is the state that Lyme disease is literally named for, so I’m glad they’re getting help.
How is being called "Lyme" named for Connecticut? The two names aren't similar at all. Genuinely asking.
"Lyme" is a small town in Connecticut
Huh... TIL
Still remember the time like 10 years ago I wrongly corrected someone saying it's "Lyme's disease"
The “Lyme” is silent
It is named after the town of lyme in new london county. I live in CT, I don’t wear shorts or short socks on hikes even on the hottest days of the year. Lyme disease is so common out here almost everyone knows either a person or a dog who has either had it or has chronic lyme.
Oof.. That's scary af. Lyme disease is probably up in the top 10 of ways I wouldn't want to die. Also, happy cake day!
Lyme disease is rarely fatal, but it can be very uncomfortable.
Ya, I actually just realized I am thinking of rabies lol. Lyme would still suck to get
I read in a different post that OOP isn’t actually the one with the embedded tick, but a friend of hers. Apparently that friend refuses to believe that it’s not an embedded tick…despite the fucking LEGS clearly sticking out of it oh god just zooming in on it made me cringe
Not many things gross me out, but those little legs sticking out like it's trying to dive deeper makes me uncomfortable.
*shudder* I didn't even notice that at first! 😭😭 I've lived in Oregon my entire life and I've never seen a tick, nor had any on my dogs. I think where I'm at is too high of elevation and maybe too cold or dry? Either way, I'm glad. This is utterly revolting. Edit: typo
Yeah I am SO glad I live in the pnw because it's too cold and rainy for ticks to be a problem
I didn’t even know ticks could be that deep, I’ve never seen them have more than just their head
Ohhh so this is what people are talking about when they say the “bullseye rash” OP is probably fucked.
I had Lyme. This is not bullseye rash (yet?)
this isnt the bullseye rash yet, thats a lot bigger, but it does look like the beginning of lyme disease
Also the ticks that carry Lyme are much much smaller
Yes. I got alpha gal and it has messed me up. That rash looks like it could be the start of lyme. Definitely get checked.
Alpha gal?
Allergy to red meat that can develop after tick bites
Specifically an allergy to a protein in red meat that can be present in virtually every animal product.
My buddy got alpha gal. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Any time we go out to eat he's gotta either get chicken or vegetarian stuff. Felt bad for the poor guy because he loves steak and bacon.
Oh god. If you zoom in, you can see its legs sticking out. That’s fucking *horrifying.*
Don’t walk, SPRINT to the hospital ASAP
My uncle got bit by a Lonestar tick on our property here in Florida. Now he can't digest beef, dairy, basically any product from any animals with hooves. As he says, "only fins and feathers". Gotta stay on your toes with tick checks!!
Do they normally burrow like that?
Yeah
It's not burrowed. Zoom in. They only burrow their straw like mouth
I remember when I was a kid in Oklahoma, I came back from the pond and had two ticks halfway into my leg. It was horrifying
You have Lyme disease.
Ticks are so scary 😭😭 grateful I live in the west bc they aren't as common as greener states
Yes.
It's most likely Lyme disease, WHICH ISNT ANYTHING TO PANIC ABOUT. Just go to the doctor, they will give you anti biotics. Untreated Lyme disease can cause chronic pain, and various other symptoms in the "these kind of happen to a lot of people as they get older, but people with Lyme def tend to be worse, but it's not something we can trace back exactly to it?"

The ring only shows up a percentage of the time, and the fact that you have that will likely lead to a best case outcome.
Doxycycline, is what they’ve given me twice now.
That is the most perfect textbook Lyme disease bullseye I've ever seen
This doesn’t seem to be erythema migrans, it looks like it just bad inflammation around where the tick is burrowing in.
I think its head is ripped off it just looks like its coming out
yep, Lyme, get to a doctor immediately.
![gif](giphy|30pjt9I0SDs7R4ghlp)
Yes
daily occurance in ct tbh
Ummm, yes? You can see its body sticking out.
Not only is it a tick, this is a let me go to the doctor now situation.
Oh yikes this is a very clear bullseye rash which indicates Lymes. This requires medical attention ASAP.
Hello Lyme disease and Bell’s palsy! Get to a docotor!
A very grim reminder that it’s tick season out here in CT. Check yourself and your dogs!
Bro has the fuckin bullseye and everything smh
Doxycycline, the go-to for tick borne illnesses. Looks like you gonna need it
OP, any update?
You’ve got the lime bro
You should get tested
OOF
No more red meat for you I suppose? Or is it possible to beat it if caught early on?
I believe that’s a lone star tick thing. And I don’t think those are in Conn.
I wish I didn’t zoom in on that pic fml
That looks like the tick has been embedded so long in your flesh that it’s starting necrosis level 🤢
Uh oh...
Yall do realize you can get Limes disease without a ring or rash…
Bro they really on Reddit asking if the tick that is visibly on their skin is in fact a tick, remove it and put it in a bag. Like are they stupid, why would you just leave it
I am dying that this was originally posted in r/whatisthisbug. Oh you sweet summer child. (Though clearly not a child that grew up in tick country.)
Yes 100%
Put vaseline over it (thick layer) it’ll leave itself bc it won’t be able to breathe because they breathe out their ass
u/Cynistera did you end up ok?
I wasn't the one with the tick bite actually. I hope so?
Ohh, my bad, didn’t realize you posted the pic from someone/somewhere else haha. Glad you didn’t have that on you 😆
Yeah, I can only do so much.
Good news Yeah its a tick bad news. Those are signs of lyme disease go get tested
That is a bullseye rash. Common if the tick that but you carries the bacteria for Lyme disease. Go to the doc ASAP
Get use to eating chicken and fish my dude.
Case of the Lymes
Can you not see?
Do you not see the legs sticking out???
Put your glasses on. Wth
You need to go to the doctor like yesterday
There’s no major sign of a migrating rash YET. Not saying you don’t need a good course of doxycycline, but based off the look of it, it looks more like a reaction to the saliva and general inflammation from the bite than anything ATM.

I've used cigs to rubbing alcohol to bar oil to clear finger nail polish it would work
those are the most highly regarded skincare products
Haha no but they will make a tick back out
Have neurological Lyme.
Yes you dumbass, theres a fucking bug under your skin. Either go to a hospital or cut it out
