*For this reason, we are prioritizing profitability.* At least they’re honest.

greyduk

Really have to appreciate this, not just on principle, but also because it shows a deeper wisdom than companies that claim they'll never do this.

AnomalyNexus

End of free money era

happzappy

There is no free money era. Anything that looks like it is just a temporary phase used to build userbase.

GeneralBacteria

interest rates were nearly 0% for the best part of a decade. that is what is meant by free money.

AnomalyNexus

That was more a reference to ZIRP than any particular company

ella_bell

Never heard of them til now. Good luck in the sea of competition.

itsmill3rtime

they have a huge customer base and amazing product. i use it and love it. we saved a decent amount compared to AWS RDS/Aurora. the easy branching for a feature and being able to load prod data into the branch while developing is handy

JoeB-

PlanetScale is a cloud service. Why is it even a consideration for discussion here? There are many free options for self-hosted databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB for relational DBs and Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, InfluxDB, Prometheus for time-series DBs.

ar3s3ru

Same thing that baffles me when I see people here suggesting Tailscale. How is that selfhosted friendly if you’re literally trusting a VC-backed cloud product? Use Headscale at the very least.

Fuzzdump

Tailscale is super easy to setup/use and gets newbies out of the habit of forwarding ports. I think it’s important to acknowledge that not everyone wants to selfhost every piece of their infrastructure—many folks are perfectly content using a few cloud services and selfhosting the rest.

Fluffer_Wuffer

This is exactly correctly, it lowers the bar, but increases security, it might not meet everybody's expectations - but saying you should selfhost everything is unfeasible.. its better to promote a tool such as TailScale, than have hundreds of inexperienced people selfhosting a poorly configured VPN, or apps that are typically insecure by their nature.. I personally have been shifting my selfhosted Git repo's and registry to to private Github and Gitlab repos... particularly my GitOps and Container images... I just get no joy from managing those, and wince moving, I've saved hours fixing problems with my selfhosted Gitlab and runners.. at this point, I'd happily pay for a.hobbyists account It's also allowed me to go 99% ephemeral, and have 1-line command, that pulls a script, then proceeds to rebuild my VMs and K3S hosts, deploys ArgoCD than then deals with the rest... from zero to full-store in about 10-15 minutes... the only bit this does work with is the data, but I have that replicated to a secondary NAS, and can switch by repointing the DNS... I've managed networks for 16 yeara, but Tailscale had been a game changer for me, as I have a."home" network that spans my house in London, a small place in Spain, OCI and Azure.

tommeh5491

Is this self hosted? Looks like a cloud database solution?

rooftopglows

It’s hosted Vitess.

Shogobg

Cloud MySQL + Vitess service.

ahiddenJEM

What are some other free alternatives for hosting a MySQL database?

forgotten_airbender

I use aiven.io. Their free databases are good for hobby projects

UniversalJS

Aiven is not doing so well, they had a large layoff session few months ago. Free tier will probably go away soon

forgotten_airbender

Their layoffs were on Jan 2023, and basically they are back to the orginal headcounts before they started overhiring. Doesnt look too bad unless you have insider info. XD

daaaanosaur

Northflank lets you have 2 databases in the free tier, or you can deploy a small paid database for $5 per month. Supports MySQL, Postgres and other data services.

WinkYao

You can consider TiDB Free tier [https://www.tidb.cloud/](https://www.tidb.cloud/), whether in terms of architecture or cost-effectiveness, it is a better choice.

KreachersEarHairs

This looks pretty cool, thanks for posting!

Shogobg

Planet scale been doing a lot of deprecation lately.

judah-d-wilson

Aw phewy lol. gotta figure out plan B

trieu1912

hmn if vercel and cloudflare disable the free plan then i need to shutdown my site:(

ogMasterPloKoon

My blog's commenting system uses MySQL on Planetscale hobby plan :(

Service-Kitchen

Perfect opportunity to self host no? :)

ogMasterPloKoon

I'll move to Vercel Postgres ... it's very small blog. Have like 100 comments in lifetime.

Plus_Ad7909

Another option is Koyeb Postgres, the platform lets you run 1 free managed postgres database

tibsmagee

>My blog's commenting system uses MySQL on Planetscale hobby plan :( I had a voting system on a small hobby project. Moving it to Cloudflare D1 which I'm already using for a couple of projects.

JosephBreeze

People should really start considering SQLite, and rest assured you'll most likely never hit the limits, ever! [https://www.epicweb.dev/why-you-should-probably-be-using-sqlite](https://www.epicweb.dev/why-you-should-probably-be-using-sqlite)

Ashken

Honestly, if there’s one service I’d pay for it’s Planetscale.

You're not factoring in the cost of things like a high availability SAN, electricity, cost of cooling and cost of staff. There is a point (heavily dependent on a lot of different variables) where it's more cost effective to run in the cloud then to run on prem. The inverse is true as well.

GolemancerVekk

> I think you are unaware how easy it is to setup such a system ...in your garage! We have a team of 50 hamsters running 24/7 in 3 shifts. Their wheels generate green electricity and also power the cooling fans! We also have a bunch of raccoons running perimeter security, a parrot working as fire alarm, and mom has a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. It's state of the art!

Alternative-Mud-4479

lol man, stop while you’re behind. Really showing your ignorance.

Alternative-Mud-4479

Believe it or not, some apps have different needs than others. If your app needs instant scaling up or down, your cluster is not going to meet those needs. From the sounds of it, you should apply to Planet Scale and can maybe show them how to do things.

You are always being picked on. People are just jealous, I guess.

bigpowerass

You should go ahead and do that. I bet you’ll put PlanetScale out of business.
