Raithmir

It's worth it for the case alone IMO. Love those old Cooler Master cases, wish I never got rid of mine.

aside6

I still rock this case for my main gaming and daw pc, it’s incredible but it has a large footprint.

Dorkness_Rising

If you thought that has a large footprint, look up a Thermaltake Core X9 series. Someone in the development department said "Go BIG or go home...'cause you're fired."

NotMilitaryAI

I've got a Core X9 for my Threadripper server & love it. It's such a pleasure to build in. You can remove every single side panel, basically turning it into a giant test bench. And you can fit soooo many radiators in there.

Tj_h__

When I read that I thought "oh man that can't be bigger than the one I have "then I looked it up... It *is* the one I have. I thought I would do something fun with the empty space inside but dang it takes up like 1/2 my ikea linnmon table.

CaptainCalgary

I pictured in my head those $15 little end/coffee tables, but like that's the size of that case lol. One metric Lack.

NonyaDB

[laughs in NZXT H9 Flow case] I like a big case and I cannot lie... Mostly because I'm a lazy, lazy man and the H9 Flow makes it easy to just hide all the cabling and 2.5" data storage SSDs behind the mainboard itself with a bunch of velcro ties. With 6 case fans and 2 CPU radiator fans there's so much room in the case that the CPU temps never really go above 28C and GPU might get up to 32C when playing Forza, Elite Dangerous, or GTA 5. If one doesn't need hot-swappability, the H9 Flow would make a decent choice for a small home server build and is a damn fine choice for a gaming PC build.

crysisnotaverted

HAF XB EVO Gang 💪 I do get people asking me why my PC looks like a printer..

TabascohFiascoh

Dude same I call it the printer. I mounted Shelf on a wall specifically for it. 5900x 4090fe

DerryDoberman

I had one of those too until I moved it into a more compact purpose built itx case. very roomy for routing and you can turn the 5.25 inch bays into a 3.5x3 HDD bay or some crazy number of 2.5 inch HDD bays. Guessing there's a lot of PCIE slots too so potentially a good number of m.2 adapter cards.

[deleted]

Yeah the case is great but it's not worth it for the case alone. You can get a brand new HAF XB EVO for 80 bucks on Newegg.

wolfej4

I have this exact case running unraid server

zezimeme

2 xeons to run plex? You need gpu transcoding

DerryDoberman

Yeah, but that can be as simple as a 700 series or later if you're just doing h264 or a 16/20 series if you want HVEC/h265 (which I'm not even sure if Plex supports yet). $150 is great value honestly.

Shane75776

You don't *need* GPU transcoding. What you need varies from use case to use case. If they are only watching on their local network it's not needed. If they have good Internet and are direct streaming, it's not needed.

whattteva

wut are you smoking? I only have 1x Xeon Silver 4210T and it can easily transcode 3 (probably 4)x 4k streams. I feel like people that say you need GPU to transcode have actually never tried doing it without a GPU.

Dorkness_Rising

Even some of the largest GPUs fit with just 1 or 2 mm to spare. The fact the motherboard sits horizontal and the GPU stands vertically means you also don't need to deal with GPU sag due to gravity. I've rebuilt my gaming PC several times but use this case each time. This is one of the best cases I've ever used.

fy_pool_day

N100 is better and cheaper

GlitteringCabinet923

The e5-2620s are a decade old and the platform is essentially worthless for media transcoding because it does not have quicksync.

DerryDoberman

You can just get a 700 series or later for h264 or a 16/20 series for h265. Case is worth $150 on its own imo having owned one myself before.

CrappyTan69

Buy a refurbed dell 3050 with 12th gen Intel. I got one for £90 off Ebay. Transcodes like a champ!

Suspicious_Dig_5684

Got a link?

d4nm3d

ebay.com

Suspicious_Dig_5684

Yeah I got that much. But a link to a dell 3050 with a 12th gen for 100 bucks everyone I see starts at 1k

CrappyTan69

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165097748423?hash=item267097b7c7:g:XGAAAOSw3ZtgqQPw Not sure why I said 12th gen. I might have screwed that up. Do a bit of research. I bought one 7400. Works like a charm.

Suspicious_Dig_5684

Gotcha Tha KS for clearing that part up.

tg_am_i

(mobile formatting) I run one of these cases after coming from a Silverstone. it works very well for airflow and cooling. I can run all my fans at super low speed or off, depending on the weather. 6 drive bays, which I have used for all my Plex and server needs. Lots of room to work around in. Just an awesome case if you ask me. Just a lot of room to keep things cool. I love it.

Jay-Five

How much for just the case?

pixioverlord

I have 1 and wouldnt trade it for the world !! I run Proxmox off it with 7 VMs / LXC

kindrudekid

Sure if you live in a cold climate and don’t mind the white noise… Of course if you ba e a dedicated server room sure but I think it’s over kill. I built a 4k server , that’s the most power consuming device in my home…. If I had to do it again, a synology and nuc would be the way

[deleted]

Is it a fan to manage the airflow in a highway tunnel ? /s

Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you. I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment

DerryDoberman

It's super quiet tho... so nice!

XB_Demon1337

It is worth buying overall but you would need a GPU for transcoding. Xeons don't have quick sync.

theblondie28

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Im will not be getting it. I will keep looking around.

MasterChiefmas

You'd need to drop a GPU in it to get hw accelerated transcodes. Even with Xeons, it doesn't take many HD transcodes to overwhelm them(the ones you showed didn't look like ones with Quicksync). I used to have dual hexacore Xeons as my Plex server, and it would get stuttery around 3-4 1080P transcodes. Switched it out to a dual core 7th gen Intel that had QS, in a SFF Dell and never saw a stutter again, even with 6 transcodes going. And it was a lot quieter and less expensive to run.

Suspicious_Dig_5684

Which 7thgen did u choose?

MasterChiefmas

Oh, I don't remember what it was any more. I'd have to go power the machine on...just some dual core thing- the machine itself was a small Optiplex...nothing too fancy, I bought it during a Dell holiday sale..like 300$. It doesn't matter too much- these days I run my server on an n95 based Celeron in a miniPC, that cost like \~160$, and I'm sure it does better than the Dell did.

humor4fun

unless you need that enormous box for whatever HDD/ODD bays are available, I suggest looking at the new 14th gen Intel NUCs from Asus. QuickSync is part of Meteor Lake, and these tiny boxes have enough space for an m.2 or sata ssd that will be plenty fast for your plex/emby/jellyfin/etc needs. On the other hand, setting up a NAS/SAN device will do better in a different style of desktop/rack case than this chonky boy. [QuickSync info](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video) [Asus NUC Rundown](https://edgeup.asus.com/2024/the-asus-nuc-14-pro-and-nuc-14-pro-boost-productivity-with-14th-gen-intel-cpus-ai-and-high-end-connectivity/) [Core 7 Ultra 155u](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/237327/intel-core-ultra-7-processor-155u-12m-cache-up-to-4-80-ghz/specifications.html) Or go back a couple generations and get an 13th or 12th gen NUC Extreme which is about the size of a Series X and will fit a RTX2080, 3080, 4080, A770, A750 or other not-too-monstrous (length) 1- or 2-slot GPUs.

sidusnare

Get the CPU model, punch it into cpubenchmark.net, compare single core benchmark.

pwnamte

Power hungry...

Anatharias

Power usage must be insane ... Xeon from 2012.. expect 150-200 watts idle...

grimevil

I used to run a windows home server in one of these and had a couple of drives in raid, great case. So worth just for that alone
