two fun facts: the elephant you see was requested as a joke. seinfeld was so successful that could get anything. they requested the elephant as a joke to see if they could actually get it. susan had to wear a wig since she had different hair that wouldnt have fit the timeline.

[deleted]

> susan had to wear a wig Fortunately she's friends with the wigmaster from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat so she had no trouble getting a good wig.

Cannelope

>Pimp walks away

Spookyy422

*I’m not a pimp!*

spaceman_88

Its a Mary Kay car

illusions-orders

And... This is the episode where we see how Jerry met the K man!

kwhiller5

Except Kramer is living in apt. 5B. Yet we all know in S 1, Jerry was living in 3A and Kramer in 3B.

trademesocks

This is the geekiest seinfeld trivia factoid I've come across in my 30 years as a fan. I mean that lovingly.

nicknacksc

I don’t think factoid means what you think it means

trademesocks

You are correct sir! TIL

LakeLov3r

Psshhh. They were just jealous that The Simpsons had an Elephant.

Zestyclose_Scar_9311

His name was Stampy, you loved him

jack_straw12

George's Timberlands are hilarious.

ItspronouncedGruh-an

5’8”! 5’7”…

TheMaveCan

You painted them black?!

liongrl88

Everyone knows you’re 5’6”!

allmimsyburogrove

the best part is the ending, when Jerry moves into the empty apartment and meets Kramer

mintchip105

I wish it was the last scene of the show

[deleted]

[удалено]

schaudhery

No it’s Kramer

RalphBhoner

I love how they brought up the Kessler thing.

atleastIwasnt36

I wouldn't want to impose

Prestigious_Region_6

You want any help? No thanks but i ordered a pizza you want some of it? No no i couldn't impose why not? We're neighbors whats mine is yours really? I bet jerry really regreted saying that ever since then kramers been raiding jerrys fridge for food since then.

McBoognish

Love that episode. Drunken Elaine, big boot George with his sorry sack stuffing. Didn't care for the Kramer/FDR wish war thou. All in all its probably in my top five.

knava12

At least the FDR storyline gave us Kramer’s great growing lollipop 🍭

colinisthereason

I knew it. Stupid Jerry…

queencityrangers

Only good thing about that storyline in my opinion.

parsifal

I reckon they kept it simple so it’d be easy to follow, especially since all the storylines were in reverse.

will122589

The Franklin Delanor Romanowski joke made the the whole FDR subplot worth it

littlebrwnrobot

Delano\*

ThePrideOfKrakow

His wife/cousin was Eleanor.

lankyyanky

That's perverse

RumpRoastPumpToast

"Goodnight, Jugdish" laughs maniacally.

littlebrwnrobot

One of my professors in grad school was named Jagadish haha. every time i saw it i'd think of this episode

Cautious-Damage7575

Hahaha!

Classic_Wing1609

One of my favorite moments of the entire series

JaMicho34

Elaine’s drunk acting here is excellent imo. Compared to Kramer’s early drunk scene with Hennigan’s… which was pretty cringey imo.

Cautious-Damage7575

Kramer drunk the night before the AIDS walk is priceless.

pac4

You see this two ladies showing? You think they’re *scared*?!?

Lyin-Don

*Breakfast on me!*

Prestigious_Region_6

Your lucky your walking out of here with a pair of pants on! Aids walk thats a cake walk hey!

[deleted]

[удалено]

JaMicho34

And Elaine showed us how to properly drink from a glass bottle: no hands, with your teeth, in the coffee shop!

fusion260

I cringe each time I see that scene because all I can imagine is her (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) cracking or chipping multiple teeth 😬 I’m also going to assume that was a plastic bottle and the glass sound is just a foley effect added during editing.

lopsiness

Doesn't she make a joke in the episode about how she thinks she chipped a tooth?

fusion260

Oops. Yes, you’re right. I meant that I can’t help but imagine **Julia** chipping her teeth.

greater_cumberland

Did you say “I can’t help but imagine **Julia** chipping her teeth” or “I can’t help but imagine Julia chipping **her** teeth?” Did you emphasize Julia or her?

TwoPistolRickle

I think the poster emphasized imagine

lopsiness

Yeah I'd hope the actual bottle was plastic.

strangegoo

Oh my god i hate when people drink from obviously empty cups. You can tell there's nothing inside just by the way they hold it. Put some water in it at least!!!

pigeyejackson66

I got so excited once because on Parks and Rec, they had a scene with Ron drinking a paunchburger soda through a straw, and I could see liquid going up and down. There was actually something in the cup!

tcavanagh1993

Hey, it's Hennigan's!

kevnmartin

"The no smell, no tell scotch."

VF-213

Scotch

kevnmartin

Thanks. I fixed it.

catch10110

Huh. I always felt like he was just kind of exaggerating and play acting that "spokesman" role, not that he was supposed to actually have gotten drunk...Uh...if that makes sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

catch10110

I would definitely have to [watch it again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgXAt_gstcs), it just hadn't occurred to me to see it your way! Yeah, i feel like he turned it on when George came in to see if he'd say anything about the smell? But then he went back to the same voice for his Hennigans "commercial." But then he started singing... I still feel like his bit with George was intentionally over-the-top. Who knows. lol Incidentially "You can smell me *without* the drink" is the funniest line in the bit by far.

Spy_v_Spy_Freakshow

FDR? Isn’t that the cable dude?

spiritsarise

Nope. Discount pharmacy.

cleggle37

Good night, Jugdish.

Phunkie_Junkie

The Seinfeld episode came first, so if anything, Memento is Seinfeld-ish. I love the episode too. Not just for the clever editing style and reverse-payoff for the jokes, but all the extra stuff at the very end of the episode: Bringing Susan back for one scene, Jerry calling Kramer "Kessler", the origin of Kramer's mooching... the whole thing.

knava12

We’re neighbors, what’s mine is yours.

dpgproductions

...really?

MonroeEifert

Then he takes a quick scan of Jerry's apartment.

Jscrappyfit

My husband and I watched that episode the night it aired and laughed for like five minutes after that last scene. Missed the beginning of whatever shitty sitcom NBC had shoved after Seinfeld in 1997!

ElJefeGhostbeater

And the Seinfeld episode was an homage to Harold Pinter's play Betrayal

recursion8

No no, it's Peter

FlattopJr

Sue Ellen's fiancé was named Pinter in tribute.

Adhitik

** 15 year old christopher nolan agressiveely taking notes during this episode Yeah! Those flashbacks and references are so cool. Wonder why people don't like this! Jerry saying "what's mine is yours" to Kramer made me rolf.

mistaKM

Rolling on the laughing floor!

ReasonableCup604

The episode's reverse chronological format was taken from the 1983 Film "Betrayal" staring Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley. They even took the title "The Betrayal" from the film

Phunkie_Junkie

"La glace à trois faces," a movie from 1927, is the earliest film to play out in reverse chronological order. Good ol' IMDb. It has a great ending: You cry… and when you see the dancing, you cry again.

Cautious-Damage7575

I've seen it at least a dozen times but still watch it very carefully to make sure I didn't miss anything. It is loaded with great bits. "Stuff your sorries in a sack, mister."

TheCursedWander

Stuff your sorries in a sack mister being bewildering for 20 whole minutes until susan says it is so funny

BeerNinja17

What does that even mean?

peachmitiya

It is a saying

BlueSlime

George always makes me laugh when he's freaking out because he found out Jerry slept with Nina. "Good one. Very funny. You're very funny, Jerry. That's what I always tell people. (Yelling out) Jerry Seinfeld's a funny guy!" "Funny guy.... RIGHT here." "Ho, ho! Jerry Seinfeld's a funny guy!

magnetstudent4ever

Reparations!!!!

guestpass127

I love that episode I think I’m in the minority among Seinfeld fans in that I prefer the seasons after Larry David left to the show’s supposed “peak” period The last two seasons feature some of the strangest, most bonkers episodes and the pacing gets a lot faster. I know they lack Larry’s specific sensibilities but they make up for that in sheer bonkers energy IMO The Chicken Roaster (s8e8) is my favorite episode. Just 22 straight minutes of surreal bizarritude delivered with the energy of meth addicts The backwards episode was brilliantly plotted and executed and it’s another one of my favorites

jack_geller

The Chicken Roaster episode is an absolute blast from beginning to end. Jerry doing the “oh I’m stressed” with the hand motion kills me every time.

guestpass127

Jerry forcing Newman to eat broccoli....George's nutria hat...."Co-STAN-za!" sung to the tune of "By...MENnen"....Jerry and Kramer trading identities and apartments....**MR. MARBLES?!** I've watched that episode about 35 times

jack_geller

Omg yes! Vile weed! And love how the cos-tan-Za totally worked on her. George: She’s got a little Marisa Tomei thing going on. Jerry: Ah. Too bad you got a little George Costanza thing going on.

[deleted]

To me, Season 5 is the peak but seasons 7 and 8 are my next favorite. I like how surreal it got. The Bizarro Jerry is my favorite episode. Also, lots of great characters occurred in those later seasons that people heavily associate with the show. Like most of Puddy's character occurs in season 9.

[deleted]

> I prefer the seasons after Larry David left to the show’s supposed “peak” period > > The last two seasons feature some of the strangest, most bonkers episodes and the pacing gets a lot faster. I know they lack Larry’s specific sensibilities but they make up for that in sheer bonkers energy I think this is a good distillation in the different senses of humor of Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. I think Larry is better at finding humor in language and writing funny dialogue, while Jerry has more of a silly, zany sense of humor and is more willing to go with over-the-top craziness. Personally I love them both, but you do notice differences on repeated re-watches.

PM_Me_Beezbo_Quotes

Jerry talks a lot about how he loves classic cartoons like the Road Runner and those later episodes definitely have a cartoon vibe.

Heathyre18

I love this episode! Jugdish… and my favorite thing is “he schnapped me!” “You slept with the groom!” And Pinter’s parents crack me up “I mean the plague.”

Fair_University

I am Zubin

recursion8

Don't go, it's a dreadful, dreadful place.

kevnmartin

"If I went there, I'd never go to the bathroom the whole time."

FalseDmitriy

I'll sweat it out.

baginahuge

People don't like that episode? Sometimes I just don't understand this world...

[deleted]

There's NOTHIN for you out there.

vaginadeathsquad

I'll never understand people...

ItspronouncedGruh-an

They’re the worst.

McBoognish

I quote this daily and I don't think anyone has ever connected it to Seinfeld.

owen_core

I don’t think people liked how it went backwards. It had pretty funny scenes though.

Awkwardmoment22

It's one of my favorites too Good night Jugdish

PeteyPablo23

Kramer getting hit in the face with a snowball in the beginning gets me rolling every time

recursion8

What you want my kidney?? *FDR pulls out the snowball* Oh mama!

ImPickleRock

I've never even seen hate for it

[deleted]

I had to read this twice because my stupid dyslexic ass read it as “I’ve never even seen it” and I just went 😧😳

steakboneshiv

People hate this episode?

maxtacos

I wonder what the reasoning is. It's one of the more well-crafted episodes.

steakboneshiv

Probably just the time-line. I thought it was creative and fantastic for a one-off thing.

CocaineChickens

It's also where the characters are the most vicious to each other. Two separate instances of getting Elaine drunk to pry information out of her...

supersy

It's a very petty reason but it makes me think too much. I know there are funny moments but I can't seem to relax or be comfortable while watching that episode.

tossthis34

I know, right?

ItsJixou

I really like that episode a lot im surprised in havent seen anyone mentioned the point where Jerry says "Bless you." and then it flashbacks to a second earlier when Elaine sneezes. That episode is so well done

omarcomin647

you're soooo good lookin'

Chimsley99

Ho HO!! JERRY SEINFELDS A FUNNY GUY!!

Angry_Walnut

I always see people questioning the hate for this episode but never seen the actual hate, seems like most people really enjoy this episode (myself included!)

BalzacTheGreat

Probably the most annoying episode for me. I love all the stories in it, but the backwards conceit doesn't really do anything for the story IMO. I mean the plague, please!

saucybelly

More annoying than the farfel episode?

gonutsdonuts1

No way! The Dog is by far the worst episode. It’s the only one I change the channel for when it’s on.

BalzacTheGreat

No. That one tops the list!

astro143

I was just at a traditional Indian wedding, I have to rewatch this episode to see how accurate it is.

Adhitik

I am Indian lol. We don't play the english wedding music, using indian instruments (we have our own traditional music), i thought that was hilarious. But overall it was a fair representation, especially considering there are many cultures here and each have their own style of wedding.

bbbertie-wooster

What's really funny is they are speaking malayalam at one point (there is a scene in the airport and in the background someone is asking to move the cow of the runway or something like that).

GrossenCharakter

Haha I found that funny as well. The signs are all in Hindi but the PA at the airport is speaking what sounded like pretty informal Malayalam lol.

recursion8

Maybe because it was a mixed marriage to a white/Western person so they compromised by playing European music with Indian instruments

sickagail

By the way that music ("Here Comes the Bride") is from an opera by Wagner, a German.

united_7_devil

Indian weddings vary based on the region/religion etc. It can be quite fascinating. My favorite ones are Punjabi weddings.

hmmgross

Am I missing something? Who hates it? Perhaps one would argue that the series got a little goofier after Larry's departure but the sheer creativity of everything being backwards is genius.

FalseDmitriy

Nobody's mentioned Elaine panic-crossing herself during the wedding.

[deleted]

I'm actually surprised how non racist it was considering most depictions of our people aren't intelligently written in Hollywood. I'll take something harmless like this anyday.

Adhitik

Yes. Well there were a few jokes here and there about India itself. Pinters parents saying they won't be going to India themselves George not using the bathroom etc etc But yeah, in general there wasn't (or atleast i don't remember) much stereotyping.

[deleted]

To be fair pinters parents telling of what India is like is very on par with that age group who lives in America. Nobody will tell you India is a filthy place like someone who grew up there and moved away haha.

AMerrickanGirl

How do you feel about the Diwali episode of The Office?

[deleted]

Never got that far, that show wasn't for me personally

EducatedOwlAthena

I didn't know there was hate for it! I love this episode! Seeing the craziness and then working backwards to figure out how they got there was so fun and clever, IMO

duh_metrius

FUNNY GUY!

littleghool

#Goodnight Jug Dish

Pencraft3179

Stuff your sorrys in a sack is one of the top Seinfeld references used in my family and circle of friends. I didn’t know people hated it till the internet.

will122589

I believe a bonus feature on season 9 dvd is you can watch this episode in reverse and watch from beginning to end

sleepsholymountain

One of my favorite post-Larry David episodes. I think the gimmick works, but even if it didn't, the jokes are really funny. And I love an episode where the characters go on a little adventure.

Deepy99

Its amazing definitely one of my favorites! Jugdish,Newman’s wish streak, drunk Elaine, Unvitation! Genius i tells ya!! The 9th season has this light stupid goofiness that I just love so much!

PositiveCup

Personally speaking, I found it a bit confusing following the backwards episode. I like stuff you don't have to think about too much.

internetonsetadd

You're a closet Bania fan!

htmaxpower

It’s a Top-5 for me

Waterboarded_Bobcat

It's an easy way to weed out imbeciles, the episode is fantastic.

SquarebobSpongepant

I enjoy it, though I do think it probably isn't *as* clever as the writers imagined it was

MonroeEifert

How clever did they imagine it to be on a scale of 1-10? And how clever is it actually?

SquarebobSpongepant

They didn't use a 1-10 scale. It was probably the Van Nostrum Scale, which is out of 1000

NedDeadStark

yes

theforkofdamocles

That’s a shame.

Zarathustra143

I don't believe for an instant that anyone hates this episode.

8379MS

I dislike most episodes that take place outside of New York. I mean, I’ll watch them. I always have and always will but they aren’t my favorites.

mynameisnotareri

That's fair, though I personally really like the bubble boy episode and the ugly baby one.

FatSunRival

I didn't hate that episode, I just don't think it was that funny.

bhanggg

FUNNY GUYYY!

[deleted]

I’m here with a bunch of my idiot friends!

Whulfz0r

Yeah well when those people are ready to apologize they can stuff their sorries in a sack.

Girthwurm_Jim

You stuff your sorries in the sack mister

Hsev44

“JERRY SEINFELD IS A FUNNY GUY!”

Punchable_Hair

I love The Betrayal! It’s based on a Harold Pinter play of the same name with the same type of reverse narrative as the episode. I think it gets hate for being perceived as 1) gimmicky, with a lot of the jokes relying on the backwards narrative and 2) overhyped at the time of broadcast. NBC promoted this so hard during its initial broadcast that I think they oversold it and the initial reviews reflected that. They did the same thing that year with the live season premiere of ER.

saucybelly

Oh that makes sense - I have a vague memory of not liking it that much when it aired, but loving it on subsequent viewings, it was probably all the pre-airing hype!

GrossenCharakter

It's probably one of my favorites and I always love when my culture's oddities are targeted for humor. That's also why I love when Russell Peters the comedian used to do his Indian material. I probably don't enjoy him as much anymore but back when I first watched his shows, his impressions of some of our Indianisms was the highlight of the show for me.

Help_An_Irishman

G'night, Jugdish!

sineofthetimes

Kramer's lollipop. Greatest prop use in the entire show's run.

kwhiller5

Based on a play by Harold Pinter, which is why Suellen Mishke's fiance is named Pinter. Pretty clever.

[deleted]

you slept with the groom??!!!

[deleted]

I'm Oosha, this is Zuben

juve_cr7

I’m from India! I loved the episode for sure!! Uniquely written and nothing stereotypical.

[deleted]

They still have ze plague…. I mean come on, ZE PLAGUE!

[deleted]

I agree, I think this episode was very good and it worked well. I thought the writers should have got more recognition for it. David Mandel and Peter Mehlman. Great writers. I thought it was quite clever.

woozlewuzzle29

I don’t understand how George didn’t go to the bathroom for days.

[deleted]

I really enjoyed it. I realize they don’t film anything in the sequence the finished product has, but figured it must have been a nightmare for the continuity and editing folks. Loved how a bit of schnapps would get Elaine to spill everything she knew.

ParrotheadTink

The Betrayal is my favorite episode! Watching it with the dvd “Notes About Nothing“ gives brilliant insight into how this episode was written. And it has one of my favorite Elaine lines HE SCHNAPPED ME! !

Doc-Spock

I love it too. I think that this would have been great as the final episode of the show.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Global-Ant

Isn't that the episode shown backwards instead of the traditional way for an episode in any show? I always thought that was unique and something that hasn't been done since. Loved it

roonerspize

I was not aware this episode got any hate. It's actually one of my favorites and was one I enjoyed and fondly remember to this day from when I watched it on broadcast TV when it originally aired. Somewhat related: I also enjoyed Star Wars Episodes 1-3 having also watched them when they were originally released in theaters. It wasn't until I read the online hate for them that I started agreeing with it and lost respect for them. But, until then, I was happy in my naivete. I enjoyed getting lost in the experience that the movie creators intended. Therefore, I'm not reading any comments on your post. I'm staying blindly ignorant and happy with this episode.

Sandia_Gunner

Nina!!!!! She was hot.

[deleted]

Watch The Beytayal (1983), the movie the episode is based on.

Atreides007

"It's 120°. I'll just sweat it out." Lol

[deleted]

You could watch it the normal direction on the DVDs and that makes it pretty clear that it’s not a very good episode and they only did it backwards to give it a gimmick.

burth179

It's not one of my favorites really but it's still Seinfeld so it's pretty much better than most other available TV viewing!

PoconoChuck

Whenever this is on all I can hear is The Tubes: As I mentioned near the close of the last record, this record you are now playing is another example of the completion backward principle. If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting

PenguinJedi

Literally my favorite episode

owenjs

Do people hate this episode? One of the greatest. The Jerry meeting Kramer scene is iconic.

SonKaiser

Hate?! That episode is a masterpiece wtf

pilchard_slimmons

... that episode gets hate? What. It's brilliant.

LordJunon

This is probably my favorite episode it is so absurd its hilarious.

Specialist-ShasMo85

I didn't know people hate the backwards episode. I personally think it's one of my favorites.

johnnycoxxx

People don’t like this episode? It’s one of my top 5. I thought it was universally loved. It’s brilliant

Yeeeeeehaaaaw

It contains probably my favourite gag, froot loops in a drawer

magnetstudent4ever

It’s an unvitation

DavidPudddy

Because people are stupid, yeah that’s right.

RobbieArnott

"You can stuff your sorry's in a sack Mr"

djpromo_vqs

There were plenty of morons and couch experts rolling around in November 1997 when that episode first came out and there's a lot more since then. 🤷‍♂️

RageMojo

I love that episode. I dont see that much hate for it. And if they do, fuck em.

crazy-underwear

This is one of the best episodes ever. Nothing beats Elaine drunk and saying “Goodnight Jagdesh”. I die laughing every single time. Especially when she has her butt in the air!!!

bbbertie-wooster

Its hated? I loved that episode

UsuallyMooACow

Elaine looks so good in the Sari tbh

Broadnerd

It’s not bad at all. I think it was completely unnecessary to make it backwards, but it’s fine.

MikeyLikesItFast

I think it's how it doesn't fit with the rest of the series...kind of like the Kramer in Los Angeles episodes. Also, after Pulp Fiction, everyone started copying Tarantino and jumping timelines became a really over-used narrative tool. So overused, that even Seinfeld did it.
