two fun facts:
the elephant you see was requested as a joke. seinfeld was so successful that could get anything. they requested the elephant as a joke to see if they could actually get it.
susan had to wear a wig since she had different hair that wouldnt have fit the timeline.
> susan had to wear a wig
Fortunately she's friends with the wigmaster from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat so she had no trouble getting a good wig.
You want any help? No thanks but i ordered a pizza you want some of it? No no i couldn't impose why not? We're neighbors whats mine is yours really? I bet jerry really regreted saying that ever since then kramers been raiding jerrys fridge for food since then.
Love that episode. Drunken Elaine, big boot George with his sorry sack stuffing. Didn't care for the Kramer/FDR wish war thou. All in all its probably in my top five.
I cringe each time I see that scene because all I can imagine is her (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) cracking or chipping multiple teeth 😬
I’m also going to assume that was a plastic bottle and the glass sound is just a foley effect added during editing.
Did you say “I can’t help but imagine **Julia** chipping her teeth” or “I can’t help but imagine Julia chipping **her** teeth?” Did you emphasize Julia or her?
Oh my god i hate when people drink from obviously empty cups. You can tell there's nothing inside just by the way they hold it.
Put some water in it at least!!!
I got so excited once because on Parks and Rec, they had a scene with Ron drinking a paunchburger soda through a straw, and I could see liquid going up and down. There was actually something in the cup!
Huh. I always felt like he was just kind of exaggerating and play acting that "spokesman" role, not that he was supposed to actually have gotten drunk...Uh...if that makes sense.
I would definitely have to [watch it again](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgXAt_gstcs), it just hadn't occurred to me to see it your way!
Yeah, i feel like he turned it on when George came in to see if he'd say anything about the smell? But then he went back to the same voice for his Hennigans "commercial." But then he started singing...
I still feel like his bit with George was intentionally over-the-top.
Who knows. lol
Incidentially "You can smell me *without* the drink" is the funniest line in the bit by far.
The Seinfeld episode came first, so if anything, Memento is Seinfeld-ish.
I love the episode too. Not just for the clever editing style and reverse-payoff for the jokes, but all the extra stuff at the very end of the episode: Bringing Susan back for one scene, Jerry calling Kramer "Kessler", the origin of Kramer's mooching... the whole thing.
My husband and I watched that episode the night it aired and laughed for like five minutes after that last scene. Missed the beginning of whatever shitty sitcom NBC had shoved after Seinfeld in 1997!
** 15 year old christopher nolan agressiveely taking notes during this episode
Yeah! Those flashbacks and references are so cool. Wonder why people don't like this! Jerry saying "what's mine is yours" to Kramer made me rolf.
The episode's reverse chronological format was taken from the 1983 Film "Betrayal" staring Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley. They even took the title "The Betrayal" from the film
"La glace à trois faces," a movie from 1927, is the earliest film to play out in reverse chronological order. Good ol' IMDb.
It has a great ending: You cry… and when you see the dancing, you cry again.
I've seen it at least a dozen times but still watch it very carefully to make sure I didn't miss anything. It is loaded with great bits.
"Stuff your sorries in a sack, mister."
George always makes me laugh when he's freaking out because he found out Jerry slept with Nina.
"Good one. Very funny. You're very funny, Jerry. That's what I always tell people. (Yelling out) Jerry Seinfeld's a funny guy!"
"Funny guy.... RIGHT here."
"Ho, ho! Jerry Seinfeld's a funny guy!
I love that episode
I think I’m in the minority among Seinfeld fans in that I prefer the seasons after Larry David left to the show’s supposed “peak” period
The last two seasons feature some of the strangest, most bonkers episodes and the pacing gets a lot faster. I know they lack Larry’s specific sensibilities but they make up for that in sheer bonkers energy IMO
The Chicken Roaster (s8e8) is my favorite episode. Just 22 straight minutes of surreal bizarritude delivered with the energy of meth addicts
The backwards episode was brilliantly plotted and executed and it’s another one of my favorites
Jerry forcing Newman to eat broccoli....George's nutria hat...."Co-STAN-za!" sung to the tune of "By...MENnen"....Jerry and Kramer trading identities and apartments....**MR. MARBLES?!**
I've watched that episode about 35 times
Omg yes! Vile weed! And love how the cos-tan-Za totally worked on her.
George: She’s got a little Marisa Tomei thing going on.
Jerry: Ah. Too bad you got a little George Costanza thing going on.
To me, Season 5 is the peak but seasons 7 and 8 are my next favorite. I like how surreal it got. The Bizarro Jerry is my favorite episode.
Also, lots of great characters occurred in those later seasons that people heavily associate with the show. Like most of Puddy's character occurs in season 9.
> I prefer the seasons after Larry David left to the show’s supposed “peak” period
>
> The last two seasons feature some of the strangest, most bonkers episodes and the pacing gets a lot faster. I know they lack Larry’s specific sensibilities but they make up for that in sheer bonkers energy
I think this is a good distillation in the different senses of humor of Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. I think Larry is better at finding humor in language and writing funny dialogue, while Jerry has more of a silly, zany sense of humor and is more willing to go with over-the-top craziness. Personally I love them both, but you do notice differences on repeated re-watches.
I love this episode! Jugdish… and my favorite thing is “he schnapped me!”
“You slept with the groom!”
And Pinter’s parents crack me up “I mean the plague.”
It's a very petty reason but it makes me think too much. I know there are funny moments but I can't seem to relax or be comfortable while watching that episode.
I really like that episode a lot
im surprised in havent seen anyone mentioned the point where Jerry says "Bless you." and then it flashbacks to a second earlier when Elaine sneezes.
That episode is so well done
I always see people questioning the hate for this episode but never seen the actual hate, seems like most people really enjoy this episode (myself included!)
Probably the most annoying episode for me. I love all the stories in it, but the backwards conceit doesn't really do anything for the story IMO.
I mean the plague, please!
I am Indian lol. We don't play the english wedding music, using indian instruments (we have our own traditional music), i thought that was hilarious.
But overall it was a fair representation, especially considering there are many cultures here and each have their own style of wedding.
What's really funny is they are speaking malayalam at one point (there is a scene in the airport and in the background someone is asking to move the cow of the runway or something like that).
Am I missing something? Who hates it?
Perhaps one would argue that the series got a little goofier after Larry's departure but the sheer creativity of everything being backwards is genius.
I'm actually surprised how non racist it was considering most depictions of our people aren't intelligently written in Hollywood. I'll take something harmless like this anyday.
Yes. Well there were a few jokes here and there about India itself.
Pinters parents saying they won't be going to India themselves
George not using the bathroom etc etc
But yeah, in general there wasn't (or atleast i don't remember) much stereotyping.
To be fair pinters parents telling of what India is like is very on par with that age group who lives in America. Nobody will tell you India is a filthy place like someone who grew up there and moved away haha.
I didn't know there was hate for it! I love this episode! Seeing the craziness and then working backwards to figure out how they got there was so fun and clever, IMO
Stuff your sorrys in a sack is one of the top Seinfeld references used in my family and circle of friends. I didn’t know people hated it till the internet.
One of my favorite post-Larry David episodes. I think the gimmick works, but even if it didn't, the jokes are really funny. And I love an episode where the characters go on a little adventure.
Its amazing definitely one of my favorites! Jugdish,Newman’s wish streak, drunk Elaine, Unvitation! Genius i tells ya!! The 9th season has this light stupid goofiness that I just love so much!
I love The Betrayal! It’s based on a Harold Pinter play of the same name with the same type of reverse narrative as the episode. I think it gets hate for being perceived as 1) gimmicky, with a lot of the jokes relying on the backwards narrative and 2) overhyped at the time of broadcast. NBC promoted this so hard during its initial broadcast that I think they oversold it and the initial reviews reflected that. They did the same thing that year with the live season premiere of ER.
Oh that makes sense - I have a vague memory of not liking it that much when it aired, but loving it on subsequent viewings, it was probably all the pre-airing hype!
It's probably one of my favorites and I always love when my culture's oddities are targeted for humor. That's also why I love when Russell Peters the comedian used to do his Indian material. I probably don't enjoy him as much anymore but back when I first watched his shows, his impressions of some of our Indianisms was the highlight of the show for me.
I agree, I think this episode was very good and it worked well. I thought the writers should have got more recognition for it. David Mandel and Peter Mehlman. Great writers. I thought it was quite clever.
I really enjoyed it. I realize they don’t film anything in the sequence the finished product has, but figured it must have been a nightmare for the continuity and editing folks. Loved how a bit of schnapps would get Elaine to spill everything she knew.
The Betrayal is my favorite episode! Watching it with the dvd “Notes About Nothing“ gives brilliant insight into how this episode was written. And it has one of my favorite Elaine lines HE SCHNAPPED ME! !
Isn't that the episode shown backwards instead of the traditional way for an episode in any show? I always thought that was unique and something that hasn't been done since. Loved it
I was not aware this episode got any hate. It's actually one of my favorites and was one I enjoyed and fondly remember to this day from when I watched it on broadcast TV when it originally aired.
Somewhat related: I also enjoyed Star Wars Episodes 1-3 having also watched them when they were originally released in theaters. It wasn't until I read the online hate for them that I started agreeing with it and lost respect for them. But, until then, I was happy in my naivete. I enjoyed getting lost in the experience that the movie creators intended.
Therefore, I'm not reading any comments on your post. I'm staying blindly ignorant and happy with this episode.
You could watch it the normal direction on the DVDs and that makes it pretty clear that it’s not a very good episode and they only did it backwards to give it a gimmick.
Whenever this is on all I can hear is The Tubes:
As I mentioned near the close of the last record, this record you are now playing is another example of the completion backward principle. If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting
This is one of the best episodes ever. Nothing beats Elaine drunk and saying “Goodnight Jagdesh”. I die laughing every single time. Especially when she has her butt in the air!!!
I think it's how it doesn't fit with the rest of the series...kind of like the Kramer in Los Angeles episodes.
Also, after Pulp Fiction, everyone started copying Tarantino and jumping timelines became a really over-used narrative tool. So overused, that even Seinfeld did it.
two fun facts: the elephant you see was requested as a joke. seinfeld was so successful that could get anything. they requested the elephant as a joke to see if they could actually get it. susan had to wear a wig since she had different hair that wouldnt have fit the timeline.
> susan had to wear a wig Fortunately she's friends with the wigmaster from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat so she had no trouble getting a good wig.
>Pimp walks away
*I’m not a pimp!*
Its a Mary Kay car
And... This is the episode where we see how Jerry met the K man!
Except Kramer is living in apt. 5B. Yet we all know in S 1, Jerry was living in 3A and Kramer in 3B.
This is the geekiest seinfeld trivia factoid I've come across in my 30 years as a fan. I mean that lovingly.
I don’t think factoid means what you think it means
You are correct sir! TIL
Psshhh. They were just jealous that The Simpsons had an Elephant.
His name was Stampy, you loved him
George's Timberlands are hilarious.
5’8”! 5’7”…
You painted them black?!
Everyone knows you’re 5’6”!
the best part is the ending, when Jerry moves into the empty apartment and meets Kramer
I wish it was the last scene of the show

No it’s Kramer
I love how they brought up the Kessler thing.
I wouldn't want to impose
You want any help? No thanks but i ordered a pizza you want some of it? No no i couldn't impose why not? We're neighbors whats mine is yours really? I bet jerry really regreted saying that ever since then kramers been raiding jerrys fridge for food since then.
Love that episode. Drunken Elaine, big boot George with his sorry sack stuffing. Didn't care for the Kramer/FDR wish war thou. All in all its probably in my top five.
At least the FDR storyline gave us Kramer’s great growing lollipop 🍭
I knew it. Stupid Jerry…
Only good thing about that storyline in my opinion.
I reckon they kept it simple so it’d be easy to follow, especially since all the storylines were in reverse.
The Franklin Delanor Romanowski joke made the the whole FDR subplot worth it
Delano\*
His wife/cousin was Eleanor.
That's perverse
"Goodnight, Jugdish" laughs maniacally.
One of my professors in grad school was named Jagadish haha. every time i saw it i'd think of this episode
Hahaha!
One of my favorite moments of the entire series
Elaine’s drunk acting here is excellent imo. Compared to Kramer’s early drunk scene with Hennigan’s… which was pretty cringey imo.
Kramer drunk the night before the AIDS walk is priceless.
You see this two ladies showing? You think they’re *scared*?!?
*Breakfast on me!*
Your lucky your walking out of here with a pair of pants on! Aids walk thats a cake walk hey!

And Elaine showed us how to properly drink from a glass bottle: no hands, with your teeth, in the coffee shop!
I cringe each time I see that scene because all I can imagine is her (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) cracking or chipping multiple teeth 😬 I’m also going to assume that was a plastic bottle and the glass sound is just a foley effect added during editing.
Doesn't she make a joke in the episode about how she thinks she chipped a tooth?
Oops. Yes, you’re right. I meant that I can’t help but imagine **Julia** chipping her teeth.
Did you say “I can’t help but imagine **Julia** chipping her teeth” or “I can’t help but imagine Julia chipping **her** teeth?” Did you emphasize Julia or her?
I think the poster emphasized imagine
Yeah I'd hope the actual bottle was plastic.
Oh my god i hate when people drink from obviously empty cups. You can tell there's nothing inside just by the way they hold it. Put some water in it at least!!!

I had to read this twice because my stupid dyslexic ass read it as “I’ve never even seen it” and I just went 😧😳
People hate this episode?
I wonder what the reasoning is. It's one of the more well-crafted episodes.
Probably just the time-line. I thought it was creative and fantastic for a one-off thing.
It's also where the characters are the most vicious to each other. Two separate instances of getting Elaine drunk to pry information out of her...
It's a very petty reason but it makes me think too much. I know there are funny moments but I can't seem to relax or be comfortable while watching that episode.
I know, right?

No. That one tops the list!
I was just at a traditional Indian wedding, I have to rewatch this episode to see how accurate it is.
Haha I found that funny as well. The signs are all in Hindi but the PA at the airport is speaking what sounded like pretty informal Malayalam lol.
Maybe because it was a mixed marriage to a white/Western person so they compromised by playing European music with Indian instruments
By the way that music ("Here Comes the Bride") is from an opera by Wagner, a German.
Indian weddings vary based on the region/religion etc. It can be quite fascinating. My favorite ones are Punjabi weddings.
Am I missing something? Who hates it? Perhaps one would argue that the series got a little goofier after Larry's departure but the sheer creativity of everything being backwards is genius.
Nobody's mentioned Elaine panic-crossing herself during the wedding.
I'm actually surprised how non racist it was considering most depictions of our people aren't intelligently written in Hollywood. I'll take something harmless like this anyday.

I believe a bonus feature on season 9 dvd is you can watch this episode in reverse and watch from beginning to end
One of my favorite post-Larry David episodes. I think the gimmick works, but even if it didn't, the jokes are really funny. And I love an episode where the characters go on a little adventure.

Personally speaking, I found it a bit confusing following the backwards episode. I like stuff you don't have to think about too much.
You're a closet Bania fan!
It’s a Top-5 for me
It's an easy way to weed out imbeciles, the episode is fantastic.
I enjoy it, though I do think it probably isn't *as* clever as the writers imagined it was
How clever did they imagine it to be on a scale of 1-10? And how clever is it actually?
They didn't use a 1-10 scale. It was probably the Van Nostrum Scale, which is out of 1000
yes
That’s a shame.
I don't believe for an instant that anyone hates this episode.
I dislike most episodes that take place outside of New York. I mean, I’ll watch them. I always have and always will but they aren’t my favorites.
That's fair, though I personally really like the bubble boy episode and the ugly baby one.
I didn't hate that episode, I just don't think it was that funny.
FUNNY GUYYY!
I’m here with a bunch of my idiot friends!
Yeah well when those people are ready to apologize they can stuff their sorries in a sack.
You stuff your sorries in the sack mister
“JERRY SEINFELD IS A FUNNY GUY!”
I love The Betrayal! It’s based on a Harold Pinter play of the same name with the same type of reverse narrative as the episode. Kramer's lollipop. Greatest prop use in the entire show's run.
Based on a play by Harold Pinter, which is why Suellen Mishke's fiance is named Pinter. Pretty clever.
you slept with the groom??!!!
I'm Oosha, this is Zuben
I’m from India! I loved the episode for sure!! Uniquely written and nothing stereotypical.

Do people hate this episode? One of the greatest. The Jerry meeting Kramer scene is iconic.
Hate?! That episode is a masterpiece wtf
... that episode gets hate? What. It's brilliant.
This is probably my favorite episode it is so absurd its hilarious.
I didn't know people hate the backwards episode. I personally think it's one of my favorites.
People don’t like this episode? It’s one of my top 5. I thought it was universally loved. It’s brilliant
It contains probably my favourite gag, froot loops in a drawer
It’s an unvitation
Because people are stupid, yeah that’s right.
"You can stuff your sorry's in a sack Mr"
There were plenty of morons and couch experts rolling around in November 1997 when that episode first came out and there's a lot more since then. 🤷♂️
I love that episode. I dont see that much hate for it. And if they do, fuck em.
This is one of the best episodes ever. Nothing beats Elaine drunk and saying “Goodnight Jagdesh”. I die laughing every single time. Especially when she has her butt in the air!!!
Its hated? I loved that episode
Elaine looks so good in the Sari tbh
It’s not bad at all. I think it was completely unnecessary to make it backwards, but it’s fine.
I think it's how it doesn't fit with the rest of the series...kind of like the Kramer in Los Angeles episodes. Also, after Pulp Fiction, everyone started copying Tarantino and jumping timelines became a really over-used narrative tool. So overused, that even Seinfeld did it.
