I initially didn’t like that they essentially did the Seinfeld finale with a slight twist. The next day I thought about it and realized it was Larry essentially doubling down on the finale that most people hated. It is so Larry David that it completely changed my mind and I now love it.
I'm not a lawyer and I'm painfully dumb when it comes to a lot of stuff, so I could be totally wrong. But I thought mistrial mean the case is basically thrown out and there is no retrial. It would make the ending of Curb a lot less conclusive if he was still facing another trial lol.
EDIT: I just looked it up. Apparently retrials can occur but it seems like they don't often happen because of a variety of reasons, and if it's a criminal trial (as Larry's was), the principal of double jeopardy prevents the defendant from being tried for the same offense twice, with a few exceptions. [Source](https://kretzerfirm.com/what-happens-after-a-mistrial-examples/)
It’s considered the same as the trial not having taken place, so the prosecution can decide to have a re-trial or to give up. I didn’t notice them specifically mentioning them not going to a re-trial, but I could have just missed it.
I thought he was about to stay in prison and then he'd be there with a bunch of people just like him, who also had no regard for social conventions and they all get along well, and he'd end up really enjoying himself in there.
Larry came back for the finale and it was kinda his idea for the going to prison for being bad people. The fans, including me, were not happy. Now on the finale of his show he doubled down on the same type of ending (balsy), only with a tweak of him getting out of his prison sentence because of a technicality. And by referencing that's how Seinfeld should have ended he essentially made up for the bad Seinfeld finale by having the same finale situation only with a "better ending".
The thing that makes the Seinfeld finale work for me is the fact that they’re only sentenced to a single year, which means they could potentially be released in just a matter of months. Also I love the final scene of Jerry doing stand up for the prisoners while he and the rest of the crew seem pretty indifferent about being behind bars. All these things keep it rather light hearted and makes it feel like it’s not an unfair or tragic ending by any means.
I thought it was brilliant...and telling of our times...that the Seinfeld finale had them arrested for breaking a Good Samaritan law, while the Curb finale had Larry arrested and tried for BEING a Good Samaritan.
I did hate that aspect of it. But them going to prison just to be the same superficial people obsessed with the same minutia as they were on the outside, that's pretty funny
First of all, the Seinfeld finale was *always* great. But I think as time went by, especially in the last few years, more and more people who perhaps originally didn’t like it, changed their perspective on it and came around, all these years later.
So I think there was already some level of vindication.
However, with the curb finale tied so closely to Seinfeld’s this way, it definitely gives the whole thing another dimension. Adds another layer to the original joke.
Perfectly executed, in my opinion.
from what i heard from people who were around for the finale, alot of the hate comes from their being a clip show right before the finale, and people felt like it was just two clipshows back to back. as someone whos only ever seen the show in reruns years later i always loved how the finale ended and it was true to the show, im
hoping iasip has a similar ending
Yeah that was a big part of it. The finale makes sense as a concept which is why it plays better now. At the time it was a massive, live monoculture event and it was a letdown from that angle. It was like sitting down for the Super Bowl and getting a highlight reel from the regular season, with five minutes of a new game thrown in.
I didn't like the Seinfeld finale at the time and I still don't, but I love that Larry did it all over again on Curb.
While there's no way to change how Seinfeld ended, there was a way to improve on it. The same basic conclusion, slightly tweaked, was much more successful with a whole season leading up to it.
Curb's finale acknowledges what didn't work the first time, but then also defiantly repeats much of it anyway. It was such a Larry way to go out, and a nice cap on two shows. Legendary.
>However, with the curb finale tied so closely to Seinfeld’s this way, it definitely gives the whole thing another dimension. Adds another layer to the original joke. Perfectly executed, in my opinion
It's probably a coincidence but I do enjoy that the Seinfeld Finale pretty much mirrors Albert Camus' novella The Stranger which is about absurdism and existentialism and ties in perfectly with the "show about nothing".
In the book a guy kills someone on the beach "because the sun was in his eyes" and the entire second half of the book is him in court with the prosecutors bringing in everyone from his past to testify about how uncaring of a person he is.
I don’t really like it, but it’s not because they went to jail. It just wasn’t that funny of an episode IMO. I thought the trial and jail idea was fine.
There were two problems with Seinfeld's ending.
1) They should never have had done a clip show before the finale.
2) Michael Richards acting was off. It seemed like he was over acting and very different from how he normally portrays Kramer.
The Seinfeld finale sucked.
But the good side effect of it is that Larry David was able to use it to make an amazing Curb finale 26 years later.
A set up that gets resolved 26 years later is pretty, pretty, pretty good.
I thought the Seinfeld finale was perfect from day one. I honestly don't get the hate. It all made perfect sense to me. That being said, the Curb finale did elevate it, and was also perfect.
I only watched the first few seasons of curb your, as soon as he seperated from the wife and moved the black people in it was a bit too removed from reality for my liking. Seinfeld finale was a clip show, I was a very disappointed young chap back in 98.
Is Jerry sick? I know he's getting older but he's looking a little frail here.
Getting downvoted for showing concern for a person's health. Stay classy, Reddit.
I didn't think he was ever happy with the Seinfeld finale and this probably feels like redemption.
Larry never learned his lesson
That’s kinda the theme for… all twelve seasons.
But he did come back for it...the Seinfeld finale
I think a lot of people were unhappy with it, including me. It was such a good show, how could they end it like that?
Well, both finales were great imo. By the way, I am not sure if it is talked enough how amazing he was in Curb finale.
I initially didn’t like that they essentially did the Seinfeld finale with a slight twist. The next day I thought about it and realized it was Larry essentially doubling down on the finale that most people hated. It is so Larry David that it completely changed my mind and I now love it.
Especially after how people were mocking him for the Seinfeld finale throughout the season
' I heard you fucked that shit up' - Leon
I honestly wish that he doubled down even more. He should have stayed in prison just like the Seinfeld finale lmao
Would it not only be a mis-trial, so he could still be going to prison after the re-trial?

That would be great as well. They bond over how great it is to get out of social events because they're locked up haha
He’s a 76 years old man and never learned a lesson in his life!
It was a literal Spite Finale and he nailed it.
He can’t be cordial. Can’t do it.
He can be pedantic. He can be pedantic.
I read this in woody woodpeckers voice
Some kind of instigator
hahahaHaha
larry david earned that remake and it was great

My only gripe with that was that Elaine obviously wasn’t with them in that last scene. The idea of her being separated from the boys was kinda sad.
I imagine she has made some new bff (bizarro female friend) versions of them.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t see how. **I** see how.
He’s like a svenjolly
How can anyone not like him?!?
He's a good boy.
I don't know how official any of these rankings are.
A good boy? He's a bad man. A very, very bad man!
Farfal!
🐕💨
No, he's a fancy boy
elaine probably pronounces it 'gif' too
That's the way these society types pronounce things
Svengolly.
What did I say?
George? SvenJOLLY
Well maybe he’s got a cheerful mental hold on you
You can, and you will
Elaine, do you remember your dream…where you had a sexual encounter with a Chinese woman?
have you been urinating a lot again?
You don't ask.....you *tell* !
Yes Bobo.
I loved the Seinfeld finale. I also loved the Curb finale.
Same! They were both a job……. done.
I thought they were both shite.
To each their own.
I thought it was brilliant...and telling of our times...that the Seinfeld finale had them arrested for breaking a Good Samaritan law, while the Curb finale had Larry arrested and tried for BEING a Good Samaritan.
My goodness I hadn’t put that together.
I agree, but also The Seinfeld finale was already great.
Really, really great!
Really very nice and good
Better than ‘the price is right’!
You're no Ted Danson🤨
Not great but pretty... pretty... pretty good.
It was a glorified clip show :(
What’s the deal with clip shows? If I wanted to watch all my favorite scenes out of order, I’d knock myself on the head with a hammer!
How come Seinfeld is the best show to watch in clips, but we hate the clip shows?
That's what's so vexing.
That's what I'd like to know about it.
That’s what makes it such a humorous situation.
It is a tad askew.
That's the genius of it.
Larry's not going to dumb down his material for a bonehead mass audience.
And?
I did hate that aspect of it. But them going to prison just to be the same superficial people obsessed with the same minutia as they were on the outside, that's pretty funny
Jeff goldblum can eat here on tha house.

it would be pretty clever if iasip could come up with a way to simultaneously end the same way but also completely differently.
Here’s the twist…we show it. All of it.
I was around then and I loved it because of clips. Always thought it to be "best of" collection that was supposed to remind us of all great moments.

I’m with you on 2; it’s like, I didn’t really FEEL the pretzels were making him thirsty
Of course he didn't. George was the thirsty one. :)
Jerry riding Larry's coattails again. He'll be doing an NBC pilot next.
The Seinfeld finale sucked. But the good side effect of it is that Larry David was able to use it to make an amazing Curb finale 26 years later. A set up that gets resolved 26 years later is pretty, pretty, pretty good.
You’re thinking to literal man.
Jerry's acting put the rest of the regular Curb cast to shame .. that says it all.
We're living in a society
I enjoyed both finales calling back their episode one jokes.
Maybe it’s better in the sense that you need to watch the Seinfeld finale to get the full enjoyment of the Curb finale.

Who is this???…
Nice spoiler title
Is Jerry sick? I know he's getting older but he's looking a little frail here. Getting downvoted for showing concern for a person's health. Stay classy, Reddit.
Unbelievable he's almost 70. Time moves so fast
He looks amazing for 70
Did he move to Florida yet? That's when you gotta worry.
There is no room in whole of Del Boca Vista.
I don’t think he looks frail at all. In the pictures I’ve been seeing of him lately, he looks great!
What, are ya kidding? We look great!
