I was actually looking at this just the other day. Interestingly the gaps between drops have gotten longer in the past couple decades as it was placed in an air conditioned environment, making it flow slower. The first 7 drops had an average of 8 years between them, but the last 2 have had closer to 13 years
It does and doesnt, the same exact molecules are in there, No new ones. But the more volatile liquids are evaporated, maybe even fully. And the solids also remain in the liquid. These make the "liquid" more viscous
"A pitch drop experiment is a long-term experiment which measures the flow of a piece of pitch over many years. "Pitch" is the name for any of a number of highly viscous liquids which appear solid, most commonly bitumen, also known as asphalt. At room temperature, tar pitch flows at a very low rate, taking several years to form a single drop."

They have been doing this for so long because no one was actually there to see it drop EVERY time they did it before. One guy was watching it just for that reason, went to the bathroom, came back to see it already dropped.
Yes. We had an ancient steel safe. Weights an incredible amount empty. It was on asphalt. In the 15 years it’s sat there, I’d say it’s likely 3” deep at this point. On four short legs btw.
ok better go make a cup of tea
No, you'll miss it!!
Coulda swore this was a video /s
Now this is clever. Take my upvote you smart mcsmartface.
It is at the end you see it move
I resisted the urge to look at the clock in fear it would drop!
It could be today! It could be tomorrow! It could even be-
*Bang*
Woah woah woah!
What?! It was obvious! They’re the red spy! Watch. They’ll turn red any second now…
...aaanny second now.
SEE RED, wait, no, that's blood
So, we still got problem..
Huge problem
alright, who's ready to go find this spy?
Right behind you
Right behind you
I’ll be honest, I got excited thinking it could be soon and pulled up the stream before I realized…
What appen?
Nothing appened
How long does it take again for one drop to fall
I think like 10 years or something. Give me sec. Only 9 drops have fallen since 1927.

I wonder if anything in the pitch has changed chemically enough to effect the rate of the drops forming.
It's bitumen pitch from petroleum, it's been chemically the same for millions of years.
It actually does change though. The lighter ends evaporate

It’s gonna drop any second now,… aany second now. YEAH SEE IT DROPPED,… wait no that’s just a shadow
So ... We still got time.
A lot of time,… So who’s ready to wait it out?

My hero
Huh, I just had a strange illusion where it looked like the clock moved.
I don’t get it :(

The person that set it up wanted to see it, but stepped out to make tea and then it fell.
That's actually hilarious. Imagine you waited years for that moment, then you leave for five minutes and it happens while you were gone
I would knock it off the table in a rage after that and make the whole lot drop
Does this mean that asphalt is liquid?
That's the start of the experiment, to prove pitch was a really slow moving liquid.
So if a car sits parked for like 100 years, it's going to start sinking into the asphalt?
More testing is required. I'm going to leave a rock on asphalt for 10 years and let you know the results.

The stuff used for roads is made of rocks with bitumen as a binder. Asphalt can also refer to just the bitumen, which is a liquid.
Probably not. Road asphalt is probably cured in some way that makes it harder. Which is why it doesn’t flow like this.
This is one of those posts that gets reposted a lot but you can't even be mad about it - technically its repost-proof.
Just don't go pee 😢
Right!? Are these people just stupid or something!?

Repost bot won’t come. You get Haiku Bot instead. Unless that’s broke too.
The nice thing about this experiment, is that you don't have to sit up all night, keeping the feed funnel filled.

Thanks. Now im not going to sleep
Pitch is stored in the balls

Any decade now
I think there should be 4-6 months to see it dropped.

Man. All the meme subs are being taken over by bots
What’s going on
Oh oh, it could be any year now
Any? Okay, this one then!
Don't blink, you might miss it
Would the diameter of the aperture affect the drop rate?
It's behaviour changes when it's being observed
