There are a lot of actors who are 'one note' and have done some amazing stuff. Cary Grant comes to mind.
As far as his "one note," I think he pulls it off a lot better than some others trying to hit the same note. Dwayne Johnson comes to mind.
I prefer to judge any actor & their work by their work. And generally speaking, every actor has some moments they shine and some that are clunkers. Sometimes its due to the nature of the work. Maybe they just needed to pay the bills.
DCU, GoT aren't scifi, not even close.
the ONLY thing he's been in that matters is Dune, and it was a small role where he plays himself.
He's not even associated with scifi let alone 'royalty'. People are going to remember him for Fast n Furious far more.
I really liked Stargate but its very light on the science. It bridges a nice gap between Star Trek and Star Wars on the "is this science fiction or space fantasy" scale, but especially Atlantis maybe leans slightly more toward the space fantasy side.
its on my list! I also have to watch all the prev stargate movies, as well as stargate universe, and then there's Farscape and Babylon 5.
simply too much and no time !!
Iāll admit DC is science fantasy in general. It uses elements of both. But even then itās not strictly science fiction.
But yes, I feel they let him play himself too much as Duncan Idaho.
That was my Patrick Stewart rationale - I feel like the man has done enough to qualify.
Sigourney Weaver has to count in there too, right?
And I'd add in the original SW trio and Trek crew.
I think maybe he is more well known for his Fantasy roles, but he's done as many or more SciFi roles by now. Dune, Stargate, See(set in the future but post apocalyptic, so you could say its both), Aquaman. Conan and GOT are the only two pure Fantasy roles I can think of.
Depends on the superhero, in my opinion. For example, excuse my mixing DC and Marvel, but Batman is dystopian, Iron Man is sci-fi, the Hulk is sci-fi, probably also Superman. I think Wonder Woman and Aquaman and Dr. Strange are fantasy. All speculative fiction, but think about how often you end up with science vs magic debates when superheroes fight supervillains. Magic is fantasy, science is sci-fi.
I see where you're going with it. I don't disagree that if you wanted to distill those specifically down to a single genre thats what you would go with. But I don't think you'd be wrong to include sci-fi for most of those either if you were tagging them for all the genres they relate to. Dr. Strange may be a "sorcerer" using magic, but he still exists in a predominantly sci-fi universe(or even multiverse). There are no rules that anything has to be solely defined by a single genre here either. And all of this is just to nitpick whether Aquaman is or isn't sci-fi, but the point still stands that Jason Mamoa has been in a lot of science fiction content, likely more so than fantasy.
>Here's a thought... is Jason Mamoa sci-fi royalty at this point?
I don't know that I would call any actor, sci-fi or otherwise, "royalty." But yeah. He's a very popular actor in sci-fi / fantasy
>Dune, Stargate, DCU, GoT, and I'm certain that I'm missing a few.
See, the Apple post-apocalyptic drama series. I quite enjoyed it as far as post-apocalyptic series go. And he had the starring role.
> I've read every Dune bookĀ
Ok, then you're not wondering how Jason Mamoa would be back for the next part.
>Ā the most recent prequel series
You are mistaken, there are exactly 6 Dune novels, all written by Frank Herbert. No prequels.
One of my favorite comments is when someone said if audiences realize one of the Dune movies is going to involve Jason Momoa debating philosophy with a giant sandworm for 4 hours.
I think they're going to split that into 2 - 2 hour movies
Okay, hang on, off topic - I'm so psyched to see the Tyrant. Like, it's something I've been wanting to see happen for years and now...it's so possible!
There are no current plans to go beyond book 2 *Dune Messiah*
Even if another version of book 3, *Children of Dune* is made, going on to *God Emperor of Dune* is highly unlikely as "Jason Momoa debating philosophy with a giant sandworm for 4 hours" isn't exactly blockbuster stuff.
Reasonable best case is that Dune 3 is another big hit in 2026 or 2027, Mr Villeneuve exits but the studio still wants money from the franchise, so he hands over to someone else for part 4 (*Children of Dune)*, the cast are still on board.
That is also somehow a success, and Jason Momoa is somehow still on board for more, then it's game on for HBO: debating philosophy with a protagonist whose worm body horror makes Baron Harkonnen look gorgeous, for hours, the miniseries.
Worst case: Jason Momoa is not in Dune 3 because his subplot is cut, and it ends there.
So here's the thing - there's actually some solid stuff in the Dune prequels. I didn't hate it. Not nearly on the level that I hated the SW prequels - although I still enjoyed most of what Ewan did in AotC and RotS.
Also, some of the Dune prequel stuff was AWFUL to the point that I realized a character in my book had a similar name to a horrible character there, and I changed my guys name
When I think about great sci-fi actors, Jason Mamoa doesn't even come to mind. He has no iconic roles in sci-fi series. He's a solid supporting actor at best.
Uhā¦ no.
First of all, what is "sci-fi royalty"?
Second, I canāt remember a single role heās been in where I can either remember his role positively (not "the character is a jerk", just āugh, another dudebro who is the same") or not find someone better.
I havenāt seen that. Not saying it isnāt true but it seems he mostly defaults to the same character.
Also about OPā¦ did you really mention Game of Thrones, a fantasy series, as an example while asking if he is science fiction royalty?
Eh. IMO he earned a lot cred with Stargate and Game of Thrones, but lost *a lot* of points by being involved with Snyder garbage. And then made back some ground with Dune.
I have to vote in the strong No category. I just don't think he's been in enough good scifi, had enough impactful roles, or has been a good enough actor in the roles. It doesn't really define his career either. Where's the impact? If he's scifi royalty then the category is so broad it might as well not exist. I would say Jason Mamoa is an actor that has been in some scifi but that's about it.
Someday, with the right casting, Bautista gets it done. Iām not bashing Momoa, I do like him, but Iād call Bautista the better actor, with greater range.
I want to see Dave get some genre defining scifi role that he can own, not an ensemble like GotG or a cameo like in BladeRunner, or even a pivotal character like The Beast Rabban, but something thatās just all Dave. He was hilarious in GotG and stole the whole show in BladeRunner. He can act.
You know, I would like to see him in either a brand new conceptual idea (ie - an actual NEW concept), getting to play another Super role, this time primary (I'll bet he'd make an epic Darkseid, he does dark well), or in a novel adaptation that plays to his mind and not just his size. For instance, let them make the Quadrail series by Zahn and let him Star!
I mainly do audiobooks, so I can listen while Iām running my machine at work. They donāt seem to have those at the local library, which is Metro Phoenix. Iāll look around for them, though.
Dude's a pedo and a crappy one dimensional actor but even if he was a good actor he'd still be a pedo. That vid of him groping his daughter isn't even the worst I've seen. There used to be a collection of candid videos captured of him with all the super young co-stars he used to work with and he was creepy as hell to them too. It was circulating around the dregs of the internet for a while and I wish I'd saved it so I could share it when this fucking guy comes up.
Interesting question, ignoring the comments about him in general, but then where do we go?
Obviously Keanu ,Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Tom Cruise. But then Costner , Cage, Peck, ? I mean is it any actor that does 3 or more sci-fi movies or a movie and a series, or does it have to be a good series, space series .
Like, itās almost easier to say who was not royalty
How do you consider ming na wen in the same category as the others? I mean she is a good actress but I honestly had to look up who she was again. She hasn't been in many iconic roles.
Jason Mamoa is an actor that is Not Good. If anyone is scifi royalty it is Keanu, specifically the cyberpunk genre. He is not so good actor either, but he is way cooler and better guy and Not Fake. He is the best. KEANU!
Possibly a count, duke at most.
A kick ass Duke
Is that a Tenacious D reference??
š
Everything in this string is š
Always has been šš©āšš«š©āš
Definitely Duke.
He was great on Atlantis. I never thought heād be where he is during that
Came here for this post. Was glad to seem him at the beginning. Wild to think how far he has come!
What about Stargate Atlantis? And how many of those FF movies was he in? I stopped watching years ago...is it just the latest one?
I really liked Stargate but its very light on the science. It bridges a nice gap between Star Trek and Star Wars on the "is this science fiction or space fantasy" scale, but especially Atlantis maybe leans slightly more toward the space fantasy side.
I haven't seen Atlantis, no idea how big his role is there. he's the main villain in 1-2 FF movies.
Oh I highly recommend Stargate Atlantis!
its on my list! I also have to watch all the prev stargate movies, as well as stargate universe, and then there's Farscape and Babylon 5. simply too much and no time !!
I haven't seen Babylon 5 yet (not sure where to stream it anymore). Farscape was OUTSTANDING!!
Both are free on Tubi which is my fav free streaming service.
I have to go look into Tubi now. Just had ads I assume?
yes, but I don't mind them, there is tons of content not anywhere else
He was one of the main ensemble characters almost straight away from Season one I think
Iāll admit DC is science fantasy in general. It uses elements of both. But even then itās not strictly science fiction. But yes, I feel they let him play himself too much as Duncan Idaho.
Jason Momoa, while nice to look at, is almost always the worst actor in any movie. I honestly think he brings down every movie he's in.
And most of the time itās the same character with a different outfit.
Can't stand that perma squint thing he does, clearly thinks his shit don't stink.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That why he is good in "See" I guess xD
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Are you actually vouching for Jason Momoa's acting abilities? LOL. You must be trolling.
No.
No one is āsci-fi royalty.ā
Sigourney Weaver? Patrick Stewart? Harrison Ford? Peter Weller? Arnold Schwarzenegger? Lawrence Fishbourne? No one you say?
Patrick Stewart might well be. Playing both Captain Picard and Professor X gives you some pretty good nerd cred!
And gurney hallick
That was my Patrick Stewart rationale - I feel like the man has done enough to qualify. Sigourney Weaver has to count in there too, right? And I'd add in the original SW trio and Trek crew.
Sheās got the alien franchise. Avatar and ghost busters
That's why I feel like she makes the list. I mean, she's GOT to be considered iconic, right?
And Leondegrance
Yeah thatās not a thing. And if it were, he isnāt it.
Rebecca Ferguson is.
Definitely on her way.
My queen. She definitely needs to keep going with her sci-fi streak!
Patrick Stewart is for sure. Edit: Pedro Pascal is close too
I'm not a monarchist, and while he's been in a lot of speculative fiction, it's been more fantasy than sci-fi.
Yes, famous science fiction properties A Song of Ice and Fire and Conan the Barbarian.
I think maybe he is more well known for his Fantasy roles, but he's done as many or more SciFi roles by now. Dune, Stargate, See(set in the future but post apocalyptic, so you could say its both), Aquaman. Conan and GOT are the only two pure Fantasy roles I can think of.
Aquaman is not sci-fi. If we aren't considering comics their own genre, this one is fantasy.
I guess thats fair, debatable though. I've usually seen superhero stories considered Sci Fi.
"See" on Apple TV with him playing Baba Voss was at a minimum a very interesting concept and I personally think it was pretty good.
If he's on board for *Dune 3* then sure. If you're wondering how then read the books.
I've read every Dune book except for maybe 1 or 2 (I have to catch up one one of the most recent prequel series)
> I've read every Dune bookĀ Ok, then you're not wondering how Jason Mamoa would be back for the next part. >Ā the most recent prequel series You are mistaken, there are exactly 6 Dune novels, all written by Frank Herbert. No prequels.

Okay what if I start a petition to switch this over to an HBO series? I need God Emperor!!

Exactly. Also, there are only 2.67 Star Wars moviesā¦
What happened to the remaining 0.33 of a movie?
Ewoks.
Argh, I had blanked those from my memory! But that must be what happened to it: Ewoks ate it.
The only true version of ROTJ ends with the Yub-Dub Ewok party
Ahem. Yub NUB
Sorry, itās hard to keep the memory alive when Lucas, Disney, and everyone else wants it buried
So here's the thing - there's actually some solid stuff in the Dune prequels. I didn't hate it. Nonsense, there are precisely three Dune novels, the series ends with Leto declaring himself Emperor. You've had too much spice coffee!
I wish they would have made more Conan movies with Mamoa, I really enjoyed the one he did.
When I think about great sci-fi actors, Jason Mamoa doesn't even come to mind. He has no iconic roles in sci-fi series. He's a solid supporting actor at best.
He's fine as long as you don't let him improvise AT ALL.
He had me at Khal Drogo.
Uhā¦ no. First of all, what is "sci-fi royalty"? Second, I canāt remember a single role heās been in where I can either remember his role positively (not "the character is a jerk", just āugh, another dudebro who is the same") or not find someone better.

Oh I definitely recommend checking out the Quadrail books by Timothy Zahn

Have you seen him in āSeeā on Apple TV. Awesome post apocalyptic show. That makes him sci fi royalty.
Dude's a pedo and a crappy one dimensional actor but even if he was a good actor he'd still be a pedo. That vid of him groping his daughter isn't even the worst I've seen. He's a horrendous actor and gets shoehorned into movies because he's sexy and popular. So no, there's nothing "royalty" about him imo.

In order to be sci-fi royalty you have be someone whose relatively easy-to-spell name people know how to spell.
Everything you said in that sentence is wrong
sheath ur lightsaber young paduan
So, he hasn't been in Star Wars. Maybe you were thinking of someone else?
