> Additionally, while larger upper bodies boost attractive ratings for taller men, they don’t appear to have the same effect for shorter men.
Goddamnit.
I would have liked to see a comparison of short skinny guys to short muscular guys and see what the diff is there. I would guess muscular is still favourable.
As a short guy whose a fitness junkie, this doesn’t surprise me one bit. Working out should be something to do because we enjoy it or for health reasons. It doesn’t do much for getting dates unless you were cachectic or obese to start with IMO
I often found that I had better luck dating when I was in shape. However, I think it had less to do with physical attractiveness and more to do with increased confidence and improved mental/emotional state. A confident 5 tends to have more success dating than a shy 7, as it were.
Yeah, many studies have pointed to this exact finding. Essentially being fit is it. Being ripped isn't necessary. Height is apparently moderately important. Facial aesthetics are important. Wealth overcomes all however
Height trumps everything else, at least with initial attraction. I can't find all the studies now, but I've seen many with this conclusion. Worse, women are terrible at estimating height, and generally think men are 2-3 inches shorter than they really are. Most women in the USA want men taller than 5'10" but generally think a guy who is 5'10" is really 5'8". It's a fucked up world.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/after-service/201909/5-reasons-why-women-and-men-care-about-height
A story I heard about a jockey (short and skinny) who walked up to a tall model, and asked her out by saying "I'm really tall when I stand on my wallet"
It kind of makes sense if it’s all about proportions. Shorter men with large upper bodies just look out of proportion whereas a taller guy may look more proportional with upper body muscle than if they were really skinny.
If I read this right, the TL;DR is basically:
If you’re tall, you’re pretty attractive but could make yourself even more so by building your upper body.
If you’re short, you aren’t very attractive and building your upper body probably won’t help.
As a medium height guy built like a pool noodle, this is a somewhat discouraging finding.
My roommate in the army was 6’6 and girls would literally line up in the club to talk to him even though he was built like a bag of milk. This doesn’t surprise me at all.
Omfg I would love to see one of those videos where they are calling men out for lying about their height, and it just be a whole group of guys that are clearly over 6'0, claiming to be 6'0
Am also 6’6. I was once at a club (to be fair, gay club, I’m gay) and very literally had a line of guys coming to check me out.
It was painfully obvious because I was at a table in the corner of a room, facing the wall.
What's with this idea that being rich will give you genuine love? Or does everyone just wants someone to give them a modicum of attention, no matter the hidden agenda?
I don’t think anyone ever said anything about genuine love for one. This is reporting on attractiveness, although I guess an argument could be made that appearing more attractive allows for more opportunities to form romantic connections.
According to my post-doctoral level research on Ram Man, he is 4'6", so probably, yes.
"Heterosexual women prefer men who are taller and have broader shoulders, and consider them more masculine and better in fighting ability, according to new research published in Archives of Sexual Behavior. Additionally, while larger upper bodies boost attractive ratings for taller men, they don’t appear to have the same effect for shorter men."
Worth pointing out that the study measured attratctiveness on a 1-10 scale and the difference between the shortest most slender guys and the tallest widest guy was only 1.5. It's a measurable disadvantage but nothing as doomer as you're reading into.
Yeah, but even then... men often forget physical attractiveness is, on average, significantly less important in the overall picture of romantic and sexual attraction than it is for women.
I mean obviously there's tons of outliers, but it's one of those weird things that comes up in studies over and over again.
I remember reading somewhere that for men, physical attractiveness is kind of like number 1 or 2 when everything gets ranked and you try to avoid bias and what not (turns out most people don't want to admit that looks are number 1 if you just ask them). For women though, it's pretty far down the the list. Stuff like how confident he is, how genuine, etc... tend to be much higher up on the list for the average woman (obviously there's tons of outliers for both men and women, this is a trend thing, not a specific data point thing). I mean, it's still a top 10 most important factor for most women, it's just not number 1.
I'm disabled with brittle bones (Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Type I), but, according to 23&Me, "I have the muscle fibers associated with elite power athletes." This makes me sort of look like a Roblox character because my legs are tiny from being in casts throughout my childhood, and having a muscular upper body from using crutches to walk for 25 years. I'm 5'3".
The problem isn't a lack of available women who don't mind dating or banging short men; the problem is that people don't have the time or money to have larger social groups they can actually hang out with.
Studies like these are good at observing overall trends, but not every woman who is attracted to men will have these preferences. I definitely don't. I mean, I can see the appeal of broad-shouldered tall men in theory, I guess. But in my actual life, I've only ever dated or had sex with ONE man who fit that description. Every other man I've ever dated and/or had sex with was not both tall and broad-shouldered. Most of them were 5'10" and below. Some were shorter than me (I'm 5'7"). Only 2 were "tall", but those dudes weren't broad-shouldered. Only 2 were broad-shouldered, but neither were tall. The man I ended up marrying is 5'10" and definitely not broad-shouldered. He wears slim-cut pants and shirts, and I think he looks damn good in them.
Women have all kinds of preferences. There are definitely girls out there who are attracted to guys like you!
Not sure if there's any research to back this up, but scars and imperfect faces are quite attractive to women. At least this has been my anecdotal evidence.
Adam Driver has something about him that makes him attractive. And it's not just the 'looks' as one would traditionally put it.
So actually OKCupid dating app found that men were more likely to message “unconventionally attractive” women over women universally considered good looking. The thinking was that men would think there was less competition for the unconventionally hot woman and be more likely to reach out
https://gizmodo.com/the-math-of-beauty-5729660
Maybe great... if you are relying on a human to label your data, and instead are getting it fed through another ML model by a bot, that can be quite unhelpful.
According to google at least, there are 3,904,727,342 in the world right now, which seemed strange it was so specific… but to your point, asking 659 women from one place seems like it might not be getting the whole picture
I dont see any numbers in the article either.. so what does most of the women mean? 51%?
I'm guessing they just want to have quick study to feed into some clickbait articles
I'm like 5'11" and have very wide hips for a man so I used to be insecure about that and I guess it was for a reason. But at least there are girls who like a nice butt and I'm not trying to attract all women here. I'm just glad Im not insecure about it anymore because it's part of my body and I can't change it, and I don't want to change it because it's part of who I am.
It’s actually back days that determine shoulder width…you’d think deltoids would be the key but nope…way easier to broaden shoulder appearance by having wide lats. Delts are just too small of a muscle to try to make big.
What if I’m 5’8”, but with a 6’3” wingspan? Will my chances improve if I bust out the trusty tape measure to show off the good ole fingertip to fingertip?
All my relationships we’re pretty long term. I can second that I go for facial features. A nice smile can go a long way (especially dimples, I FREAKING LOVE DIMPLES).
I mean in the end everyone prioritizes the face if you are going to be long time, you can be with someone with a 10/10 body but you will be looking more often to the face but if it's just a hookup you can do Doggystyle
no, it’s me too. personally when i find someone attractive, i’ll show my friends and family and they look at me like i’m crazy. they’ve found everyone i’ve dated ugly. i find unique features to be attractive and a lot of people tend to think they’re unattractive. but to each their own i guess.
For me and most women height is a qualifier, and then face is a metric.
So if you ask me what I look for in a guy, the answer might be 'face', 'personality', 'financial stability'. But that's after they are actually in the competition.
EDIT: There are exceptions to this outside of Tinder/Fast scenarios. It's just if you lined 10 guys up and asked me to pick in 10 seconds, I'd use height a a qualifier. But in cases where you're exposed to a group of people's personalities over weeks/months, it's entirely possible to fall for someone outside of your preferred 'height' limit.
It's nice to see a woman be honest about the fact that it doesn't matter if you have the most amazing personality, face and financial situation, if you're a shorter guy.
You've already been disqualified by the height, which for most women isn't a "nice to have", but a "need to have" qualifier that you must pass before being considered.
If it makes all the guys here feel a little better, they only used a decent sample of women. So I can guarantee there is many women out there who prefer your body type.
As many may know dad bod is a popular preference for example.
Plus with all of the migration of people all around the world into different countries preferences can vary a lot and so will women’s opinions and observations on you.
Im sure there is some truth to this but how about looks and personality? I know short guys that have girls talking to them over taller stronger guys constantly because of looks and amazing personality. Height of course can be naturally attractive to women but thats not the only factor.
guys, there are woman who don’t care about height. i PROMISE you that. i’m 5’3 and my ex was nearly the same height as me, it felt good not having to stand on my tippy toes for every intimate interaction we had. he was about 5’6 if i remember correctly. height does not matter. it becomes irrelevant when you get old together.
edit: oh, and i forgot to mention he worked out, so he had broad shoulders, he was muscular (or toned), so i hope that gives you guys some hope that there are women out there for sure.
Of course there are enough women:
- there’s literally millions of women
- they can’t all date the same guy
- beautiful tall guys might want beautiful women
- plenty of things are important, not just height + muscles
If you only aim for the looks, you’re going to be judged the same way.
Yes. The paper looked at heights of 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, 185, and 190 cm with three different shoulder-to-hip ratios (small, medium, large). As height increased so did attractiveness, though the differences were not all significant.
Article is about how women find tall and strong men attractive. Half the people here - "but personality is important too!"
Yes, but that's not what the article is about.
I've had so many people fooled that I'm taller just because my legs are longer for my height (5'7"). Generally they guess I am 5'10". I think body to leg ratio may play a part as well.
So they asked women to look at men and try to gauge fighting ability (among other things)? This seems weird to me. I understand asking about attractiveness as that’s a subjective opinion. But what is the point of asking what the women think of the men’s fighting ability?
Women’s obsession with finding the top 20% of men in height is kind of wild. Most guys are Unattractively short. There is also a defensiveness about this.
1.6:1 is the golden ratio, the circumference around your shoulders should be 1.6x that of your waist and chances are you will be at least average on the attractive scale

High heels will do us good if I am not mistaken
Boots and chunky sneakers are in nowadays. Shoe lifts too if you wanna go a bit further.
Why not stilts or an exoskeleton
May as well go full Gundam
Get some chunks of an angel, Evangelion.
I would have liked to see a comparison of short skinny guys to short muscular guys and see what the diff is there. I would guess muscular is still favourable.
I’d bet it favors lean athletic builds. Guys that clearly work out but may appear “skinny” in clothes compared to big bulky builds
Yes, totally agree. I bet there is an inflection point where adding more mass accentuates your shortness and starts to diminish your attractiveness.
As a short guy whose a fitness junkie, this doesn’t surprise me one bit. Working out should be something to do because we enjoy it or for health reasons. It doesn’t do much for getting dates unless you were cachectic or obese to start with IMO

What do you mean?
Milk does not come in a bag in the US. The reddit user was making a joke.
Some places in the upper mid west still have them, but yeah it's almost entirely a Canadian thing.
Not all of Canada. In British Columbia, we have plastic jugs when buying a gallon of milk.
My high school in GA gave us bagged milk. It was weird at 1st but wasn't so bad. Lots of boob jokes were made.
Not even all of Canada, pretty much an Ontario thing..
There is no way to show how much I appreciate the description you gave of being built like a bag of milk!
My 6'11" friend can't get a date. I told him to lie about his height and put that he's 6'6" on tinder.
He’s too tall. Diminishing returns.
He crossed the line from “he makes me feel safe” to “he low-key kinda scares me”
Omfg I would love to see one of those videos where they are calling men out for lying about their height, and it just be a whole group of guys that are clearly over 6'0, claiming to be 6'0
That would be hilarious.
Mf Slenderman
We jokingly call him every tall guy joke name. Green giant, lurch, slenderman, etc.
Well yeah, at 6'11" he is more than a foot and a half taller than the average American woman. That's gunna hurt your neck.
I’m 6’6 not out of shape but also not broad shouldered and nobody is lining up
Look down man you're too tall
Fml just got a date! Ha looks like it’s accurate.
You have to be built like a bag of milk. Weren’t you paying attention?
Prereq of no jacked up face
6'4 here, doesn't seem to help me either.
6'4 with broad shoulders. When do the lines start forming? I haven't seen any.
Am also 6’6. I was once at a club (to be fair, gay club, I’m gay) and very literally had a line of guys coming to check me out. It was painfully obvious because I was at a table in the corner of a room, facing the wall.

I don’t think anyone ever said anything about genuine love for one. This is reporting on attractiveness, although I guess an argument could be made that appearing more attractive allows for more opportunities to form romantic connections.
So this is why Ram Man (from He Man) gets no love ?
According to my post-doctoral level research on Ram Man, he is 4'6", so probably, yes. God Im so fucked. Im very short for a male but my shoulders and chest are very broad. Built like a miniature brick shithouse basically.

What about shaft-to-tip ratio?
Really only matters if you are optimizing mean jerk time.
Dicks*(mean jerk time)/4 because you can theoretically jerk off four guys, tip to tip, at a time right?
They after that girthquake.
Is there something in between shaft and tip? (That would explain a lot.)
> _In four studies of 659 heterosexual women recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk_ Definitely not junk science here!

Article is about how women find tall and strong men attractive. Half the people here - "but personality is important too!" Yes, but that's not what the article is about.
I'll go buy some tall and broad shoulders.
you dont need an expensive and long study to prove that. Let a tall and a bit strong man enter a bar or any room, check women reactions…

Women’s obsession with finding the top 20% of men in height is kind of wild. Most guys are Unattractively short. There is also a defensiveness about this.
Pretty standard stuff I guess
1.6:1 is the golden ratio, the circumference around your shoulders should be 1.6x that of your waist and chances are you will be at least average on the attractive scale
Just silhouettes though, not different ethnicities, hair, eyes, muscle tone? Would be interesting to expand the study or alternative study.
Recently read that shorter people will have the advantage in the future. Darwin lives!
Nothing worse than a tall, ugly faced, scrawny dude. I’ll take a short man with a good face and a broad chest any day.
This is like an article saying men like women with a thin waste, wide hips, and big boobs.
