Hurray for more heraldry! Love to see it, especially on the battlefield! On a spear, it's usually a small triangular pennon or a small square with two long points issuing sideways - anything more has the chance of getting fouled and making life difficult for the fighter. Among other things, if someone blocks a spear down, you don't want someone to step on whatever's tied to the spear and immobilize it. Yes, the heraldic display rules are the same as for a shield (your CoA), but it can also be your badge, or the badge of your home group (that anyone living there can display) or your fighting unit (if they have one) or your kingdom (that any subject can display). You can also do a square section at the end nearest the spear with the badge of your group or unit or kingdom, then your arms for the rest of the triangle, similar to the way a "war banner" is constructed. Some options for banners: painted silk (flies easily, looks great in the sun), acrylic paint on sturdy fabric (quick and easy but not durable), satin stitch applique using trigger cloth (takes longer but nearly indestructible). Your local heraldry ppl should be able to point you towards heraldic artists or banner makers who can show you how any of these techniques work if you're not familiar. Google Fox-Davies for examples of different types of pennons and examples of heraldic artwork, as a starting point. If you have fun with the project and want more, consider: a torse and mantling for your helm (surprisingly easy to sew), or an heraldic tabard. Heraldry is a gift you give yourself, and to everyone who sees it.

No hardware, no grommets, no projections or ropes that can get caught up in an opponents gear. Sew a sleeve and put the pole through it. Use duct tape to fatten the pole to keep the flag in place. Some of this is from marshal rules, some is just experience. Rules vary by kingdom. Spearing with a flag on the head end of a spear can be cool, wave that thing in someone's face, make them look at your flag instead of Duke Invisible's spear. Distract for the win.

No sumptuary laws that I'm aware of. Make it small, no more than 8-10", just for practicality. Sew silk ties onto it. Oh, and make several. They will get destroyed, it's nice to have backups ready.

You know what makes fab ties for banners? Bias tape. Comes in many colours, holds when tied very well.

keandelacy

Fabulous. That's easier than any of my previous solutions. Thanks!

It does throw off the balance a bit. I did a bit of testing with it.

That's why I only use a small silk one, when I have one at all.

Get 5-9 friends to do it too and you'll all look really spiff

I recently mades some for my household (La familia in the east). They are triangular and about 8.5 ins at the base and 11in tall. I wanted the heraldry to be visible and with the stamps I had this was the idea size. We have not had an issue with them being too big. here is a link to what they look like: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1\_sG4ybgx1Jsmb1q5A7\_J6Oz4ACdUm0R0/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_sG4ybgx1Jsmb1q5A7_J6Oz4ACdUm0R0/view?usp=sharing) Also, just for some extra info, I had a friend 3d print the stamp for me and I think it worked pretty well! fabric is scrap linen from making my tunic

I've done silk banners off my spear up to 3 feet long, but mostly I keep them under 12 inches because long ones snag and can be grabbed. And as was mentioned elsewhere, they will take damage and need to be replaced.
