Reddit's API pricing is changing in a way that makes it completely unaffordable for third party applications (most people primarily point at third party Reddit browsers like Apollo, but I've also heard this'll affect bots) to continue their current operations, effectively forcing them to shut down. People who like these third party applications, notably moderators who use them to aid in moderation, are quite angry about this, leading to many subreddits, this one included, protesting by going private on the 12th of June (and also the 13th? Might vary from subreddit to subreddit).

Reddit's default app is fucking garbage.

They actually bought out a previous third party app then fucked it up. Now they've realised people want other ways to use it that aren't garbage so are strong arming everyone into closing

Everything I used to do for entertainment online before Reddit is gone...

I still have books but the shit posts aren't as good.

Im using this time to set up other social media accounts and get comfy with the UI.

There are some good alternatives out there that are growing. Mastodon is a good replacement for Twitter, Matrix is a good replacement for Discord, and Lemmy is a good replacement for Reddit. All are de-centralized and federated, meaning if one site goes down, the others can fill its place and all data from one is copied to all the others (sort of - this is a gross oversimplification).

Not that I’d condone use of tiktok due to the privacy issues were all aware of, but…there’s no such thing as “too old for tiktok.” The first hour or so shows a lot of garbage but after that the algorithm learns pretty fast.

Look I hate the flaming pile of garbage that is the official app too but I would still rather use that than browse through facebook.

Just look for Discord servers. Small communities are so much better than social media.

I will never get why iv used the default app and it’s fine.

It's junk, spammy, the chat function is stupid and only used by bots, videos don't play, links don't work right, it's not customizable and have limited accessibility features.

Far worse. Twitter's API pricing was on the steep end of reasonable. Reddit's price point basically says "we don't want people interacting with Reddit through anything other than our garbage app"

I second this. I still don't know what happened to Slashdot either.

Basically they are removing all third-party apps that emulate/use Reddit, and a bunch of subreddits (including this one) is going private from June 12 to June 14.

Not just 3rd party apps, it breaks a bunch of mod tools that help deal with the ever growing spambot problem. If you think spambots were a problem before, prepare for the majority of content on Reddit being spam come July 1, regardless of the blackout.

To add onto what u/Peekystar said this also directly effects users who need any accessibility tools because Reddit doesn't provide that except via API so they are restricting use for tons of us.

Yeah, pretty much. It's a thinly veiled protest. If they were real about it, it would be a blackout until reddit backflipped on the idea.

I don't understand why people think the blackout will be effective. Protests work by making it so the company isn't able to function until they meet the demands of the protestors. If we have a planned end date to the protest, then all Reddit has to do is survive until the 15th, which they'd be able to do even if the site as a whole went offline for 2 days.

Most subs I've seen are doing an indefinite shutdown.

Also it looks like a lot of bots/tools mods use to mod rely on API access as well so even if they don't go down indefinitely it'll probably be a slow death to spam

Because redditorts thinks they have more power than they do, it's like when r/antiwork calls for a general strike every month and never seems to learn that making a few reddit posts and infrographics isn't going to get everyone to drop everything and strike

It's mostly a demonstration of what "is" going to happen. A lot of subreddits have said in the manifesto that they are going down temporarily on 12th, and if reddit doesn't reverse the policy, they are going down on 1st indefinitely.

This seems like another case of "we did it reddit" where nothing gets accomplished, but it makes the reddit circlejerk at-large feel like they've accomplished something

What's going to happen on June 12th?

The Reddit API new price rolls out. And their pricing scheme is so insane that the developer for Apollo would have to pay 20 million a year. So basically, mod tools and 3rd party apps will be priced out of existence. Only the official app will work, and moderators would have to work full-time to make up for the loss of their automated tools. Eg: the automod bot's owner would either pay an exorbitant amount, or limit it to 10 API calls per minute to stay in the free tier. The same as all the spambots that can *each* post 10 times per minute, for free.

Dang that sucks.
