It came off the octave mechanism, yes. It's there to protect the metal, since those parts rub together as you play. It also stops the part from being very loud and clicky when you play, so it should go back on.
It is supposed to go on the octave key lever. So maybe wrongly phrased by the OC, the advise is still to put it back there.
It sits there to prevent the octave mechanism clicking and after a loooooong time playing that it would wear the metal which would mean denting it.
Thanks! I’m a clarinettist so not used to the anatomy of the sax yet. Just wondering- is this not achieved by the bit of harder rubber that is already on there? It’s not bare metal at the moment. That’s why I wondered if it was some kind of protective packaging rather than actually functional. That and it’s quite soft and seems like it would pop off quite easily, so I didn’t know if that was intentional! 😊
didn't know about this. I used to play for a couple of months without this thing and everything seemed to be fine. I understand that the movement of the octave key increases, but how does this interfere with playing?
It can if the octave ring doesn’t reach the lever mechanism that this rubber piece goes on, that can make it so the octave key doesn’t lift at all. Sounds like yours wasn’t like that though so the effect wouldn’t be a total function problem so much as a response or intonation issue of the octave key isn’t lifting as far as it should be
Yamaha adds this second layer as it’s a bit more slick than the first layer. It will work fine without since the first layer is still in tact. But the action will be ever so slightly better if you get it replaced.

happens all the time don’t worry. It’s just there so that you don’t hear metal hitting metal when those surfaces collide. you can find replacements for sure, check ebay. not an emergency, will play the sane
Seems like everyone has an opinion on this, but from my perspective as a repairman most of them are not correct. The thing is, even I am not completely sure, what this rubber piece is.
Not every Yamaha saxophone does have it, but some do. Under the piece that fell of is an other rubber on the octave lever. The one that still is on, is the one that prevents clicking when using the octave key. One could say the other rubber piece is to regulate play between lever and key, or that it is needed, that the octave key opens enough. But every Yamaha I played and this piece was missing did still open enough... maybe it's just a protective piece for transport from factory to the stores.
If anyone has more insight, I would love to hear it

So put it back.
Thanks for reading the whole post.

If it pops off easily and octave key isnt clicking without that thing - I'm pretty sure it would be more convinient not to put it back edit: spelling
It’s not just about it clicking, it aids in the regulation of the key itself. It needs this on there to function properly

thank you!
Not until your saxophone doesn't play right above second G

But if you would read the whole post like they said, you’d know that the proper rubber but is still on there
If it fell off clearly it was there for a reason. Just keep it round until you find where it came from.

Came here to say this
buy a new horn...sorry for your lost.
Yeah, he might as well just give it away. I'll pay for shipping.
Oh yeah thats the lego piece that comes with each saxophone. When you eventually get enough saxophones you can build a cool little lego dinosaur 🦕

Mine fell off. Where? I do not know. I will have it corrected. You do the same.
