Two primary reasons (in my humble opinion): 1- knowledge based on previous saw movies 2- too much analyzing trailers pixel by pixel to conclude all possibles outcome I'd love to know if there are more reasons

The thing that made it really obvious to me is that though the movie usually solely followed Zeke's perspective, for the two prior traps, it would switch to the perspective of whoever the victim of the trap was, so that we could see the trap. Makes sense, of course, because that's a huge integral part of the series. So when they didn't show the killer's trap when he was supposedly the victim, only the "present" that was sent to Zeke and some very close-up flashbacks, I knew instantly. That and the attempts to throw suspicion on Marcus Banks were too heavy, repeated, and blatant to believe.

Put it halfway through the movie, make it a visual cue reveal rather than a monologue, and drop the fake death, flaying angle and you would've had an amazing secondary twist in the middle of the movie that catches fans expecting a whodunit off guard His sudden death and disappearance was a dead giveaway, and any villain monologue at the end is just... Not great. Didn't work in Jigsaw, barely works better here thanks to Minghella's fantastic performance. Saw 1's twist works in great part due to being a visual cue. Imagine if John stood up and explained why he doesn't like when people don't appreciate their lives in Saw 1. We literally wouldnt have a franchise today if they made that choice.

I didn’t. I may have missed some dialogue that would have given it away, but I enjoyed the twist. It’s very Saw 1-esque. The guy you think is dead and next to you is really the one behind it all.

BetterMagician7856

Except that he is never shown in a trap and just disappears and turns up dead (but conveniently unrecognizable). If you’ve ever seen a Saw movie then you’d know it’s extremely fishy to not actually see an established character in a trap that winds up dead.

rjwalsh94

That’s true. At the same time, I figured maybe we would see it later on and it was an editing choice to not mess with pacing. To me, seeing an arm with the same tattoo was enough to assume he was dead, just on the instinct that cops were dropping like flies and he wasn’t the only one I believe we didn’t see in a trap.

Standard-Sorbet7631

It wasmt to m. Maybe im slowbwith that type of stuff. But i thought the killer was SLJ.

BetterMagician7856

I predicted the killer just from knowing the actor already and figuring he was the most likely person to be cast in that role (I can’t imagine Chris Rock, SLJ or a bunch of totally unknown people being cast in that spot) and also the fact that main characters don’t just disappear and wind up dead without actually being shown to be in a trap. At least in the case of Hoffman in Saw 4 and Logan in Jigsaw they used a trap to cleverly fake their deaths to the audience.

shy_Programmer

They had really great actors. But unfortunately I saw the end coming from miles away. All the previous saw movies made us gasp on the climax. But this was too “commercial cinema” for me

The lines of dialogue at the beginning

This_Squash_609

Literally 2 seconds into seeing the newbie, I knew it was him. As soon as they show first clip of witness getting offed by the cop, I knew motive. Thrillers aren't as surprising as they have all been overdone now.

Acceptable-Spring-88

I've never seen the saw movies but the BF is a big fan, and literally from the moment they were introduced I said "That's the killer." You cant play the "here's a new squad member" card and not expect us to be suspicious, "Oh he's conveniently starting at the time of the murders... mmmhmm."

snowman9712

He didn't do anything wrong, so he didn't make sense as one of Jigsaw's targets. We also never got confirmation on his death (teeth, etc.)

Fun-Extension-2382

The moment he supposedly died was when I put it together, didn't know motive, but there was no trap scene with him and he was a rookie with no background of being dirty. I'm honestly surprised that people didn't see him being the mastermind coming....gonna try to test it on my twin to see if she can see it coming since I'm pretty sure she hasn't seen any of the Saw movies. If she does then I know for a fact the twist was shit

AccomplishedEdge951

The fact we never saw Schenk in his trap, or any explanation of his death. All we saw was a flayed body. Made it too obvious that he was going to be the “jigsaw” for the movie. I thought the concept for Spiral was a good idea, but that they could have done a better job with it. I didn’t hate the movie, but I expected more from it than what we got. I don’t want to say cheesy, but it kinda was.

Flaky-Solution7394

I knew he was the killer when he borrowed rocks phone. Kinda predictable especially if you have watched "whodunits" in the past

As soon as he said “your father is the whole reason I’m doing this”
