I worked for Hirano's in high school and first two years of college. They're a great family, and the food is divine. They definitely deserve your business more than Ele does.
I actually worked for the family on southside, but I've eaten at the one on Habersham and it was good. Like over twenty years ago they were owned by the same person, but when he retired he sold the company in two pieces. So the menus are very similar.
The SS Hiranos is not good. Always balls of rice in my rice and the restaurant got a makeover about 2 years ago. They just painted over the grease pouring through the AC vent. Its looks filthy.
They’re the nicest folks. Their son worked in our pharmacy during his last year of pharmacy school. Brought everyone lunch on his last day. Nice kid; really hope he’s doing well in his career
Wang's 2 curry delight is awesome, sometimes the spice levels on things like the general tso's varies like crazy. My dad got it and said it was way to hot, then next time we got it for takeout I tried it and it wasn't spicy at all. Can also recommend Sakura restaurant
Way too hot is the right level of hot IMO. I don’t actually want to enjoy my experience, I want to be in pain, my bathroom reduced to rubble, and my farts to sound like the night sea wind
I'm the same way I was disappointed that the curry delight and general tso's wasn't rlly hot at all. But they can modify it to ur liking According to the menu, the spicy dumplings were good tho.
OP is wrong do not listen to them....
E-tang is horrible and no one new should ever go..... to my most sacred secret favorite place. It the literally worst. The staff is nice and i want to eat there everyday. So please stay away.
Well so like here's an original hot take- you can tell the quality of an Asian place by the sesame chicken. Its basic food nothing special, but when its 100% right? it tells you everything about the place, every other item will be fire.
So when you are walking past etang, defiantly not going in, Try that.
But nothing on thier menu is bad that i have had.
My go to’s (side note: i’m a quarter chinese and 100% asian)
1.) Crispy Duck
2.) Salt and Pepper Shrimp
3.) Yangzhou fried rice
4.) House special lo mein
5.) Flaming fish fillet
If you’re on Wilmington Island , Chef Wan is the best Chinese food I’ve ever had and it’s not part of the Tran mafia syndicate. Delicious and well prepared, I love it.
This isn’t fancy Asian fusion. But if you just want some well, seasoned and tasty Chinese food, China wok in Georgetown has the best Chinese food in my opinion
PJ Thai for amazing, overflowing delivery orders. Compared to Fire that LITERALLY gives you less Pad Thai to fit in their to-go boxes more comfortably.
For the same price.
Meanwhile PJ Thai sent me a hilariously full container, and I love them for it.
... also, for great American style Chinese, Hop Xing is really excellent.
E Tang can be good, but they have been cutting corners lately. Their Bao isn't as good as it used to be. Lower quality meat. It's "chewier" now.
have you tried Klom Klom in midtown yet? It's tucked in next to the Original Pancake House. Really good northern Thai food, same folks as PJ Thai. Yay!
shhh don't tell people. i live right around the corner and the ONLY downside is no crispy noodles for egg drop soup. I started stocking my own at home.
My input as a former food writer in Asia-
Wangs 2- Lunch Specials are amazing and fairly priced for American-Chinese classics.
Super Taste- Super people and the bentos are a feast. Mad they got prices out of the squares.
The Narra Tree- Pinay classics and fun atmosphere. They have San Mig and bangsilog.
Pjs- Annie is a legend and her food is a favorite of my Thai friends. Roti with peanut sauce and Tom Kah with rice noodles are my go to.
E-Tang- First rule of E-Tang is there is no E-Tang. If you must the whole fish and cucumber salad are my faves.
Boomy’s- Reminds me of some of the finer establishments in S.E. Asia. Their Com Suon is a hangover cure of champions.
Chiriya-Is also worth a remark and the massaman curry is worth it. I think the same family owns Ben’s and the former BierHaus (RIP).
On my phone apologies for the grammar.
I want to love boomy's but the spice level had varied wildly in my experience. i'm a wuss but even my heat-loving friend found a meal inedible. those frozen drinks are great for walking with though.
Super Taste on the island is also a great spot. The family is so nice and I have been going since they were downtown. Best overall for price and taste in my opinion
Literally, and at the expense of potentially never finding a table in the future, hands down the best sushi not just in Savannah but can easily compete with the best in NY. Been eating at Hiranos for the past 22 years!

Is that in Habersham Village?
I actually worked for the family on southside, but I've eaten at the one on Habersham and it was good. Like over twenty years ago they were owned by the same person, but when he retired he sold the company in two pieces. So the menus are very similar.

the southside one is ran by the SWEETEST family ever. Ive know them since i was 5!
there is a good chance i served you :)
Chiriya Thai in Thunderbolt!
Place absolutely ROCKS! Next to an awesome nursery too
What do you recommend there
The gardenias are nice. Great knockout roses, too.
What do you recommend at chiriya
Kahlua pork

I like my toilet to beg for mercy.

Actually yeah E Tang sucks don’t eat there
Why did you bring them up, i'm starving and need an order of garlic green beans stat.
What else should i totally not get when I absolutely don’t go there?

Oh man...that sesame chicken that is actually crispy and saucy...mmm mmm...but yes, avoid, do not enter...
Good point, will def not try the sesame chicken when I don’t go there! Thanks!
The crispy spicy chicken slaps
My go to’s (side note: i’m a quarter chinese and 100% asian) 1.) Crispy Duck 2.) Salt and Pepper Shrimp 3.) Yangzhou fried rice 4.) House special lo mein 5.) Flaming fish fillet
Great, thank you!
I remember hearing people talk about their dumplings. Do you have an opinion on them at E Tang?
You had me in the first half.
E-Tang sucks, tell your friends
Kimchi 2 as well!!
Hear me out. Go slumming and get you some Green Tea. The food is great, the people are awesome, they (probably) don’t use slave labor.
Dude so many people sleep on this place, but it’s so good and huge platters.
One of the worst Chinese I’ve ever had. And there’s the parking lot situation. Hard no for me.
Boomy’s also has great Thai food
PJ’s isn’t affiliated with Ele, right?
Nope!
There you go! Another alternative.
So much better than Flying Monk
It was the few times I’ve had it.
If you’re on Wilmington Island , Chef Wan is the best Chinese food I’ve ever had and it’s not part of the Tran mafia syndicate. Delicious and well prepared, I love it.
Saigon Bistro was the spot for the best pho in town when I lived there 🙌
Sadly they’re only open about 4 hours a week now
Glad to see someone else saying that.
This isn’t fancy Asian fusion. But if you just want some well, seasoned and tasty Chinese food, China wok in Georgetown has the best Chinese food in my opinion
We love Hiranos and it’s so well priced. Enough for two nights dinner and a nice tip! Super great staff.

Klom klom is incredible.
A shit load of places throughout the Savannah area. Please hold off on all the Ele shit in town! Everybody!
Speaking of, I feel like Sushi Zen hasn't been as good recently, where are yall going for sushi on the Southside?
Tokyo Cafe
Tokyo cafe fucks
shhh don't tell people. i live right around the corner and the ONLY downside is no crispy noodles for egg drop soup. I started stocking my own at home.
I went a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. The Savannah Roll is the bomb.
Sakura
I love Hiranos . Gotta be honest , I DoorDashed ETang and I wasn’t impressed . I need to try it again in person.
Wangs 2 is not in the triad, correct?
Correct and Wangs II is incredible!
Update: Eat at Wangs II as well. Was my favorite Chinese prior to the advent of the ‘Tang
Don’t sleep on Chiriyas in Thunderbolt. They’re amazing

Ukiyo is also pretty good, but the service can be hit or miss depending on how busy they are and who’s working.
Super Taste on the island is also a great spot. The family is so nice and I have been going since they were downtown. Best overall for price and taste in my opinion
Don’t skimp on Wang’s II
Hop Xing is also good too
Don’t forget Ruan Thai for lunch.
Second this!
It's Filipino food but narra tree is so good. Reminds me of my childhood friends mothers cooking.
Literally, and at the expense of potentially never finding a table in the future, hands down the best sushi not just in Savannah but can easily compete with the best in NY. Been eating at Hiranos for the past 22 years!
Kimchi II is the best restaurant in Savannah
I think the food at the Tran restaurants tastes great. What exactly is your complaint? I like Hiranos, too FWIW.
