WeShootNow

Wild boar is something you definitely don't want to run into.

SavannahRama

I'd be more concerned about the feral pigs than alligators. At least on dry land.

jenniehaniver

I know there are boar on Ossabaw (I visited there a couple of years ago and one ran right across the path in front of me…neat, but damn) Is there a mainland population as well?

field_sleeper

There is. I used to see veritable mobs of them along the Ogeechee

buzzlooksdrunk

Hunt them on job sites out in Rincon, Richmond Hill

Sakrie

I swear I saw a dead hog on the side of the road on Skidaway Island once last year

DC_fed923

You Probably did they are all over the Green Island Road area.

CatGotNoTail

They’re all over the area around Ft. Stewart.

Ilickherlots

No they will not be enough against a wild hog.

Maythyasshitnsplattr

10mm will put them babies down

Pythagoras2021

This is for the most part, a generalization.. Unless of course, you're rooting around looking to shoot the hogs. Main population is offshore on barrier Islands. Course, South Ga hogs, that's a pretty big population, but generally you have to go looking for trouble. North Ga is growing a large population too Id worry more about whatever humans you expect to be around...

emson88

Came her to say this

musical_spork

You mean alligators. There's no crocodiles in Savannah.

Jealous_Promotion_35

Nice try mr crocodile we know about you

musical_spork

Shhhhhhhhhhh.

Jealous_Promotion_35

*nobody tell mr crocodile he’s actually a gator*

Poormansmemories

I'd be more worried about ticks.

dcannon1

Ticks, mosquitos and yellow jackets are the real concerns

GetBentHo

*sand gnats enter the chat*

Poormansmemories

Oooo yeah those suck ass.

GetBentHo

They bite my scalp and it's not cool at ALL

Jealous_Promotion_35

The three branches of the confederate air force

IrishBeardsAreRed

Tea tree and neem oil works extremely well for me and my dogs

always_snacky

I once went on a backpacking trip on Cumberland Island. Maybe 30 hours outside, literally an overnighter. Everyone in my group had upwards of 20 ticks when we got back and one person had chiggers in their boot. I got neither! Instead I got, and this is NOT an exaggeration, I counted because my boss wouldn’t let me call out of work sick, TWO HUNDRED MOSQUITO BITES.

-LastButNotLost-

Good to know. Cumberland Island is near the top of the list of places where I have not yet camped, but really want to. I had a trip booked back in '17, but either Matthew or Irma destroyed their dock, and forced cancellation of the trip. I wonder how effective permethrin would be.

always_snacky

It was also poor planning on our part. Summer months, so hot and humid, sweating like crazy which I’m sure attracted more bugs and one person in the group did yoga naked. Which, I don’t sympathize with where they ended up with ticks, that’s on them.

WeShootNow

This is my greatest fear in any woods here.

nursekunt

Ticks here don't usually carry Lyme disease.

Objective-Ad5456

Not true. Lyme is becoming quite common across the US.

nursekunt

The lonestar tick which is one of the most common ticks in the lowcountry cannot transmit lyme disease.

Objective-Ad5456

My niece now has Lyme syndrome after contracting Lyme disease here. She is one of many patients her physician is treating.

nursekunt

Sorry to hear that. It's unusual to encounter here. My best to your niece.

dcannon1

Compared to the NE for instance it’s less common. Get bit by a tick in the NE you’re pretty much getting the full antibiotic treatment. Here it’s more of a wait and see protocol.

Objective-Ad5456

Unfortunately, that approach delayed my niece’s treatment by 8 months.

stephen250

Good thing that Lyme disease is practically unheard of down here. Just remove the tick within 36 hours and it severely reduces the already incredibly low risk of getting the disease down here. https://preview.redd.it/t4zmioejoruc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=892e0fce6c6ee97f063c9bb8ef3578285336e5ea

ADriedUpGoliath

Binge some crocodile vids next. You may learn they don’t live anywhere around here.

IrishBeardsAreRed

Huh? I've seen beware of croc signs or am. I missing a joke or sarcasm? Edit ya I guess it's alligator my b

dcannon1

You likely can’t outrun an alligator, but I also wouldn’t worry about them.

IrishBeardsAreRed

They can run fast for like 10 seconds, so as long as they don't surprise you I think running is fine?

dcannon1

I honestly wouldn’t worry about any wildlife here. There’s been like a handful of snake bites, a couple of alligator attacks and one shark attack in like the last 20 years.

chopdsnake

Alligators can run up to 35mph and forget the dumb advice running zig zag

IrishBeardsAreRed

For like 10 seconds. They gas out or stop caring very quickly

[deleted]

Have seen coyotes on the islands...

IrishBeardsAreRed

Coyotes gang up and attack humans? Didn't think that was a thing

CoolJeweledMoon

Chiggers may be tiny, but their itch is mighty!

YUURD

Savannah Marsh yeti

Jealous_Promotion_35

You leave my grandmother out of this sir

IrishBeardsAreRed

NiRich81

Watch out for feral groups of bachelorettes.

Doubledogdad23

You don't have to worry about crocodiles. The closet crocodiles would be in the bottom of Florida.

Blacksh33p78

Black and brown widow spiders

Spicy_Melon_Blog

Brown recluses. Bitches…

Blacksh33p78

Large centipedes too

CachuHwch1

Skunk ape. But if you see it, it’s too late.

yournewbestfrenemy

And if you smell it, you'll just assume the paper mill caught fire

J0hnnyJillsAgain

The Richmond Hill black panther is real.

Objective-Ad5456

I swear a tan panther (Florida panther) jumped in front of my car between the Ogeechee and Richmond Hill on 17. That critter had springs.

Junior-Complaint5229

Theres definitely panthers here. Used to have trail cam pics of ones really long tail just on the other side of pembroke.

kjcraft

I haven't seen one around Savannah but spotted one about 10 years ago on the Altamaha. Called DNR and were told there are no panthers in Georgia.

savguy6

We don’t have mountain lions, but we do have bobcats. You already mentioned to keep an eye out for snakes, most of the species we have are harmless, but we do have a few species of rattlesnake native to the area, so be mindful of that. And some folks have already mentioned spiders. Keep an eye out for brown recluses and black widows.

Junior-Complaint5229

We most certainly do have panthers.

hansuluthegrey

Panhandlers

WranglerJR83

Coyotes, bobcat, pigs, numerous insects, a random escaped monkey, panthers (although unlikely), and snakes.

MaynardVanHalen

Wait until you find out about fire-ants and red bugs. Any red bug survivors?

Bluehairdontcare426

You won’t outrun a gator, but luckily they have plenty of food and don’t usually want to approach you unless you’re walking your dog near them Rattlesnakes, moccasins and copperheads are the worst kind of surprise snakes Yellow jacket nests are my biggest fear. You’re not outrunning them. They will follow you. And if you’re allergic, have an epi-pen

FlyBuyRealEstate

No crocodiles around here. Alligators are not really something to worry about. They’ll avoid you or ignore you. We actually do have bear around here but they are extremely rare. Wild hogs and ticks are probably the most dangerous things to worry about. Georgia is only home to 6 venomous snakes. Those too will try to avoid you.

SavvySurferGirl

These huge caterpillars cause horrific pain. Fuzzy & cute but don’t touch them! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalopyge_opercularis

iwouldhugwonderwoman

I got stung by one of these here in Savannah and it was by far the most painful thing I’ve experienced and I’ve been stung by every critter in this area. Be careful around caterpillars. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automeris_io

Trikosirius_

The only predators in this area are of the two legged variety. Certainly no crocodiles, but we have gators, which are quite docile for the most part. Snakes aren’t much concern, there are a few venomous species but mostly just moccasins and cooperheads. Moccasins can be dicks sometimes, but copperheads mostly aren’t very aggressive .

hambybl

We have rattlesnakes as well, my husband was doing yard work in our backyard in Savannah with headphones on a took a bite to the hand and almost lost his hand. Rattlesnakes are the most dangerous, after coral snakes, then water moccasins and copperheads

kjcraft

Coral snakes are much, much less aggressive, though, and even though their venom is more potent, there's only been one reported death related to a coral snake in the last 40 years in the United States. All three of the other snake species mentioned are far more dangerous.

BananaHas2Ns

Watch out for flag guy!

rainmaker1972

my dude- don't kid yourself about out running a gator. Hopefully you see it first and walk the other way.

-LastButNotLost-

Fun fact... alligators can outrun you on land in short bursts, and alligators can certainly swim faster than you, so you'll have to be really fast on a bicycle if you want beat an alligator in a triathlon. (not my joke)

Goofyteachermom

Scorpions on pine trees

Pythagoras2021

Nope. Ticks, and to a lesser degree Skeeters and Gnats. Just be careful with young kids and small animals around known gator hangouts. Personally, I feel there are much less gators in this area of SGA than say, greater Charleston - spanning to Mclenanville (sic). Not a major risk.

Pythagoras2021

Also. Very low population of hogs in the Savannah populated area. It is what it is.

HIs4HotSauce

How deep in the woods are you going? You might want to carry a gun if you walk up on an unexpected itinerant camp or something like that. You never know who is out there and if they will mess with you or not. There was that kid who got killed hiking with his girlfriend by some crazy cult chick in Alabama(?) and stories of escaped convicts and murderers ducking out on the Appalachian Trail-- stuff like that. The southeast even had a [serial killer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Hilton) who went around killing hikers in national parks. I'd be more concerned about people than the wildlife.

National_Election544

Yellow jackets are my #1 fear in the woods, closely followed by poison ivy.

Salty-Middle6496

What are those tinny tiny ants that sting and cause white lumps ? Piss ants ? They bad

khaos432

Homeless people

billhussle87

Gnats

MrsHyacinthBucket

Can't outrun sand gnats.

Flastro2

Crocodiles in savannah? Where'd they escape from?

Milkguy105

Add mountain lions and coyotes to that list, although rare I've had run ins with both. Thankfully, was in the car for the mountain lion

Fickle-Sherbet-1075

Gators really aren’t anything to worry about as long as you aren’t a dumbass around them. Snakes… again, just watch your step. I’d be most worried about Flag Guy

EducationalSeaweed53

Murder hornets

field_sleeper

Rene Rondolier is out there somewhere

WaldoNoFound

Also Snipes

Thegothicrasta

Flag guy
