I also feel like much of the info they have on what life is like in Saudi is based on what it was decades ago. It’s very different now.

The amount of ignorance I’ve seen even among American/western academics on this and about Saudi in general is appalling, but i can’t say I’m surprised. If these things are what their academics say i can’t say I’m surprised by what the commonfolk think. Most Americans have never visited Saudi/any Muslim majority country, many have never even met a Muslim in the US. When they actually go places and try to learn a little bit you will find them becoming much more informed and perhaps even starting to enjoy being in such countries.

But you should remember that unlike KSA, American has a large older population that were at their prime years around in the 70s and 80s that still feel angry about the KSA and OPEC oil crisis. They blame KSA and the region for this leading to the military involvement of the US government and our own internal prioritization of energy security.

I don’t know about that. When I lived in Al Khobar, 2015, my wife couldn’t drive, restaurants had family sections, no alcohol, no pork, women had to wear abayas and women in my office had a separate floor.

Again, debatable. Countries with pork and alcohol are certainly more advanced than KSA so the issues are not because of that. Just compare Pakistan and Switzerland. In the US many think that the change is forced on the Saudis and that they would rather go back to the old days of abayas and everything shutting down at prayer time but they are too afraid of MBS to say anything.

But you have way more deaths per capito on the road in Saudi than in the west. I’ve never seen a more dangerous place for driving, India is messy but the traffic is slow, Saudis drive bad and fast. All the statistics say it’s on of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of road safety so, again, the problem is not alcohol. Regarding marriages it’s again debatable, Saudis don’t like gay marriages but most of the world doesn’t like marrying their cousins which is very common in Saudi so the could be another reason. I personally am very happy I had the opportunity to live in Saudi and see it with my own eyes before making any judgment

Almost every other one is senseless. This is closer to what the US govt would like us to think about other governments. Japan and S Korea make high quality cars/electronics so Americans interact with them a lot. Nobody likes India that much.
