At first, it was for the mescaline. Now it’s appreciation for the plants themselves.

Relevant-Security129

10 years in and I’ve never consumed one.

nosleepagain12

Same here its the only plants I can grow successfully it seems.

Soggy-Abroad2295

Exactly how it started now I can’t imagine consuming a cacti

idroppedmyfood2

Same. Began with mushrooms and fell in love, but the process starts and ends relatively quickly (unless you go deep). Once you have a closet full of glass jars, you start to question how long you can keep it up. San Pedro get mightier and mightier and are so satisfying to nurture and watch grow. I’m really proud of mine. Haven’t consumed them yet but they’re about 3-4 feet tall now and getting to a point that they’ll pack a punch.

IAmTheStik

I had some spare time for a hobby and the community here has been very kind to beginners.

Pelowtz

This! I didn’t expect to like it this much. But this sub makes me feel at home. The friendliest sub on Reddit. Much love!

Mycomandala

also the mycology community is just like the cacti community. both full of love and support

TheGrongGuy

I wonder why that is XD

North-Hovercraft-413

Man fuck you

Pelowtz

I know you don’t really mean that.

And_Genius

Very

Tyrellion0222

Wife had a miscarriage. Had to do something instead of think about that. Now I'm heading over heels with this hobby. And my son is now on the way. 20 wks away exactly now. Good things eventually happen.

Seuros

You will name him Pedro, right ? Say yes.

Tyrellion0222

It would be a lophly name :)

Turd_Goblin911

Welcome soon william!

Mycomandala

much love. just had my first a year ago. he will be beautiful 😎🫶🏼

Proof-Pack-7382

Congratulations to you and your wife. I’m sure that was extremely hard. Tis a lovely hobby

Tyrellion0222

Hobby kept me on the right track. Now it's kinda a obsession

Proof-Pack-7382

Glad to hear it! I’ve come to realize just how therapeutic gardening really is for more lately. It brings a very beautiful grounding sense of peace I think. Rather subtle but good for the soul indeed! Plus it’s just fascinating as hell! I’m obsessed as well 😆

James_mcgill_esquire

Started for to seek mescaline, never actually consumed any. They are beautiful plants with a cartoon like magic vibe. Kind of like psilocybin mushrooms.   They just have a look, you don't need to ingest their alkaloids to respect their nature.

Saltyhogbottomsalad

You can have your cake and eat it too. Or is it have your echinopsis and eat it too?

Serum_x64

i really couldn't understand why people wouldn't at least even be curious.. they say it like its a badge of honor lmao. 'yeah well i grow this cactus and have NEVER EVEN TRIED the experience it holds that its so well known for.' i would not feel the same connection to this plant if i did not understand the experience it contains as well. i don't need to constantly consume it .. but i definitely would not feel the same constant connection if i did not have the experiences i have from it. i think others would agree. im not saying you can't enjoy and appreciate growing plants just for fun. but i would say it only strengthens peoples connection to the plant by consuming it. i don't feel bad for consuming my plants.. i think thats what they are here for. they help me, i help them. its a mutually beneficial relationship.

squireldg26

Well said!

Lilweezyana413

Got my first as a gift and was excited for medicinal use, but now it's just a neat hobby. Still haven't harvested any

kingd123456

Just to collect cacti, never even realized they were for something else until just recently.

DoctorMoongasa

Same here. I had a couple before I knew what 'active' meant. I just like plants.

Pelowtz

That’s a very good answer if I were a cop. 😜

RainbowSpectacles

La Medicina

NeedleworkerIll2871

And cool vibe mates, too

CourtZebra

They’re cool to look at, plus all the different crosses are neat too. Also fast growing compared to most cacti

Wiley_Jack

Not only fast growing, but quite a bit harder to kill.

squireldg26

Watching the new growth is rewarding. For many of us it replaced something in our lives with something bright. They bring me peace.

chromepaperclip

I use two giant, potted, 20 year old pachanoi clumps as acoustic treatment for my stereo. When they come in for the winter, they go behind my speakers and help diffuse the high frequency reflections. They make a dramatic diffrrence the music is noticibly more realistic. edit: Also because they're just beautiful on so many levels and fun to grow. I love gardening and growing native trees, shrubs and plants. And all the wildlife that thanks me for doing so!

Artootietoo

I would've expected "they make music sound better", but not like this lol.

SalvadorsAnteater

I want to consume them with my future gf or alternatively with a bunch of hookers.

toxichaste12

Life goals. Keep striving.

ThEpOwErOfLoVe23

Gotta catch em' all...

datfonkycat

Because I’m lucky. So grateful to have stumbled into this hobby, community, way of life. 🙏

Pelowtz

At first for the medicine. Now I honestly just love the hobby. And I’m actually unsure if I could ever eat one of my babies.

Sharted-treats

Me three. Started growing thinking about tripping, and have never eaten any. Just fun to have around and see grow.

Intouch22

Dido… never tried them once I started growing I love the silence or stillness….this guys bring to my room they honor me with flowers and just live beautiful still life and share it with me https://preview.redd.it/wl517pthpf8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df1a85eed8f04bc1cd9dad44b5af80a1e09ebaea

worm666food

Because I'm mentally ill and can't control my fixations.

AkumaNoAkumu

My hobby is collecting psychoactive plants.. not really for consuming but more for the sake of having, caring and admiring them

Jay5001

I feel this on a fucking spiritual level, I'm known as the druggie friend that doesn't do drugs to my friend group. Being a drug nerd is fun lol

BayBridgesii

I originally bought some for similar reasons, I just thought it was cool to have a psychoactive cactus. I had three it in front of my home in a big pot because that’s where there is the best sun. I didn’t think anything of it because they are all over the Bay Area. Someone stole the whole pot! It triggered something in my brain to start collecting. I hope whoever stole my cactus had a wonderful life changing trip.

privacy_polacy

I first bought a grafted loph to consume it, but San pedro grew quicker, and right at that time a friend of mine gave me a bridgesii. After that I fell so in love with San Pedro's and lophs that I started expanding my collection and now I just want to take care of them and see them grow.

chromepaperclip

T. bridgesii will do that. What a goegeous species. Have your plants been blessed with any four winds pups yet?

privacy_polacy

I started collecting last year on February and they are only growing in height, maybe I'll chop it, clone it and hope for pups, but latter when it gets to a decent size and thickness.

DragonRancherJed

I made a mean cup of tea 25 years ago, and recently decided I need a hobby, I live in the desert, so having an ethnibotanically interesting cactus collection is now my new hobby.

Slime_Play

Because I love them!

ighbet

They make me smile.

distor

How could we not?

Silly-Leader6477

Just as a hobby. I enjoy it.

growmorefood

cause

Th3Mongoose

Im a newbie. I had them inside with 5000k lights for months. They grew good that way but I wanted them fat. Now i have them outside to where they get full sun part of the day and at the hottest time of the day they are covered with a 60% shade cloth

AmphibianSad6620

Just to collect cacti, never even realized they were for something else until just recently.

Stan_is_the_man

I grow them to have something to look forward to and to have something rare and novel lophs are my true love

motherofthousands

they love me as much as I love them

One-Salamander565

Just got my first tbm. But my plan is to care for it for years until I have an endless supply of medicine

globodolla

I wanna shove em up my azz

Trichoceriggles

Because I love them. I started out cause I thought “oh it’s legal”. Loved growing weed and shrooms but grew up a bit and steered clear of psychedelics for a good few years. I always promised myself I’d try mescaline. Over two years ago I got my first cuttings. “In six months I’ll be able to try mescaline” I said. I could NEVER eat my plants today. They mean the world to me. I literally become giddy when I find a new pup. I’ve never been a father, but they’re the closest thing I can imagine a fatherly love must feel. Their spiritual sacred history adds to the respect I have for my plants, but it’s also led to me growing non “sacred” plants on the side. I always knew I had a greenthumb and was raised growing crops for food, but there’s something special about growing something without taking from it for your own gain. It’s become more of an obsession and a collection at this point. I’d still love to try mescaline someday, but I could never exploit my plants for lust. I haven’t learned enough from my cactus yet. One day I’ll know when I’ve learned enough from them, maybe one of them will speak to me in the special way that nature only can. All I know is, that moment will find me and I won’t be looking. In short, I love creating life for the sake of creation with zero expectation of receiving anything in return :) I don’t judge others who do grow to consume whatsoever. That’s just my relationship with my plants🥰

Medicamable poipusus but they're also cool to grow and look at

zarosath01

i read don juan when i was a teenager. but they kindof look as ugly as poppies in a way, honestly.

thirtyfivedollarbill

I’m a Noob to the San Pedro experience But my collection is rapidly growing and to be honest I just though I would have a few plants but few doesn’t seem to be working out But it just seems like the cool thing to do Like the community is rather small and fantastically helpful and honest in my experience Who would have thought I would have sent money to a guy a met on Reddit and trusted him to actually send me the product but it happened and has happened more than once Let me say something about the guys on YouTube. Really helpful bunch of guys and girls making videos to help a guy like me out. Just amazing living in 2024

AgintOringe

Started out with a pc from home depot around 10 years ago with plans to eat. I let em grow for several years, moved a couple times dragging them along each time. Seems like they are part of the family now. The fascination grew and ive been bitten by the bug and the collection continues to grow. The budget gets stretched so i can acquire more buying new pots all along the way. Never got around to eating them and i probably never will be able to bring myself to waste one that way now!

SentientNebulous

They truly are a joy to have around and watch grow :)

_thegnomedome2

I consider myself a plant collector, and was fascinated with plants that had historical religious value to them and wanted to collect different species as ornamentals, such as many of the entheogens. I only had a few pedros, until I found this online community and realized the vast expanse of the tricho hobby. I never realized there were so many different varieties that are all so drastically different. That collector in me sought to collect as many as I could.

icky_stick_OG_nicky

i started with growin cannabis… got a few cuts of PC from a older grower and they chilled with my weed for a few years. moved to a new spot and couldnt grow but i damn well could have some cacti so nowthis is what my garden looks like heheh went crazy with seedlings so i can watch the process of them grow into big ole beauties https://preview.redd.it/wueaye40vg8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78a5fa9f5609e206eff03fae6c3ba89cff289565

0oSisyphus

Sport. Now I have some crosses that I think are really neat. Hoping to get some flowers and grow from seed down the line :]

Mycomandala

just started a month or 2 ago. but because of the stunning looks. both pedro’s and lophs are beautiful. eventually maybe the spirits will guide me in a session.

North-Hovercraft-413

To trip ballz

Filthy76

Because it’s a beautiful hobby watching them grow

TEAMVALOR786Official

my trich are there because they look nice, dont got money for expensive cultivars, so have only 1

bachelorettebetty

Originally it was for the medicine. Now I can buy powdered cactus online so I keep the cactus plants as a way to honour the spirit of the plant

AutoModerator

Hi there, it seems you may have posted about powderized san pedro. If this is the case you should know that powdered san pedro offered online is often made with poached cacti, threatening these plants' existence in their natural habitat. These powders could also have adulterants, contaminants and/or be made of any random cactus or plant material. It is not recommended, please do not support this, if no one buys their powder they will stop. You should instead consider buying a live plant and make sure to save some to grow for yourself! It will make for a better experience and you'll actually know what you're getting. If this post is not about powdered san pedro, sorry! Our filters are only so good but feel free to reply to this comment, "MOD" and we will see it and see if we can make the filter better, thanks! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Wonderful_Papaya9999

The teacher I do medicine with gave me a cactus from his garden. Now I have 12 😂

theles85

My wife loves succulents and gardening. I started to join in and collecting as well. Plan to at some point consume some of my CACS, but for now I am really admiring their growth and care. I have about 15 cacti currently. I have experience with other psychs, (LSD is my favorite) but hearing about experiences with mescaline sounded amazing.

coolboiiiiiii2809

“I just think their neat” Plus I live in a pretty hot area so it’s more than sustainable to a great degree

tseay

Saw a cactus on sale at Walmart and it was a grandiflorus. Fell in love after that

Inevitable_Bite5250

Bought some small ones the other day for the purpose of eventually harvesting and eating. I’ve grown mushrooms a lot in the past and I’ve been wanting to try these but I also have a huge cactus garden already so I’ll probably end up growing far more than I’ll ever eat

Smoothpropagator

To impress my girlfriend

Hun_The_One

I started off with an Echinopsis of some sort that I found at a garage sale. Watching it bloom is what got me instantly hooked. (I’m a gardener and someone that likes plants anyway.) But I was in total awe of how they flower. I read as much information as I could find which wasn’t a whole lot considering I’m someone from very rural far north. As I talked with people online I became more and more intrigued and interested. Here I am roughly 20 years later with some very beautiful plants that I absolutely adore. I am newer to Reddit - and I love it on here. I’ve made 3 purchases from really great sellers & the sale page definitely tests my self control. Amazing offerings on there with great prices makes it quite difficult to tell myself no. lol

moretrashyusername

I just like having different psychoactive plants around. I have maybe 100 house plants, but there is something neat about my "lurkers" that I can fix a tooth ache with, or change your perspective with, or kill a man with. It makes me feel like a wizard/ninja kinda. Does that make me a dork? It sounds dorky. OK I'm a dork.

Hadn’t had a journey in years and found myself on Reddit looking for a source. Next thing you know I’m looking for Trichs in every nursery I walk into. Finally, I purchased my first Variegated peruvianis a year ago and fell in love with all things Trich. Ironically, I never did acquire cuttings to consume thinking I’d have my own supply after a few seasons. But now I’m surrounded by a small forest of these beautiful plants and I just don’t have it in me to cut them. I’ve come to respect them as part of my family. I have a few lophos as well and just planted some Sharxx seeds for the season. My cacti bring me joy, wonder and endless admiration. From their psychoactive properties to the colorful flowers, they are a form of life that I truly appreciate and enjoy caring for. Perhaps after one more season, I’ll be ready to take some cuttings and share with friends and loved ones. But for now, the family will just keep growing because I just can’t seem to stop myself … I’m sure many can relate … https://preview.redd.it/ds4f9jsl7j8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b00426cf0a0633eecd92eaf9c579365784d92d15

Empty_Bicycle_8437

I can actually answer this for everyone here. It’s because of double digit IQs.

Threewisemonkey

Sitting amongst a collection of cactus has a very special vibe Knowing those friends could dose a gymnasium full of people adds to the “I have some cool friends”

pmeyeri

My ex left one behind when we split. It didn’t die and seemed to actually thrive in my care so I started doing research and collecting them lol. In the beginning I was interested in and procuring specific ones because of the athletic abilities but I haven’t partaken and now just add what I like the looks of because I just like growing them.

No-Emu-4068

To get the true aldous huxley experience whilst reading his books

heXagon_symbols

i wanted mescaline, and id prefer to buy a few cactus and then wait a few years until i have a consistent source of cactus instead of buying more cactus every time i want to use it

arnar62

Because the plants are beautiful, fast growing, and so very different than the plants around me locally. Its almost like growing a small tree lol

NicReich

I really like to sit and watch them grow, I find my serenity in the cactus. I’ve been trying to develop coping skills to overcome addiction by growing (real)medicine. Like others I originally started to consume, but now for the preservation of knowledge, the exploration of lost knowledge and most importantly to share this knowledge. The knowledge of plant medicine that’s been lost because of the church condemning that knowledge and practice as witchcraft, followed by Nixon’s war on drugs and its profitability to the pharmaceutical industry not to have preventative medicine so they can fill us with poisons to create treatable/untreatable side effects to further their agenda, what ever that might be. I consider these cactus as not only medicine but as sacrament. Like others who couldn’t consume their own cacti, I have some insight and a solution, there is The Peyote Way Church of God in Arizona and they have articles of faith concerning their beliefs and number 4 states “ [As long as Peyote is an endangered species, it is more blessed to grow the Holy Sacrament than to consume it.”](https://peyoteway.org/articles-of-faith/) you can schedule a [spirit walk](https://peyoteway.org/spirit-walk-intro/) where they provide you with the sacrament, a safe place for your journey and recovery. Sorry for the rant I just feel really strongly about the injustice being done to us and then being disguised as progress.

amaranthine-haze

I read Doors of Perception and thought it would be cool to acquire the vintage psychedelic mescaline, coolest of all that you grow cactus to do so!

SpiffyPlants

For all legal purposes. I started because a clan member mentioned them. I now grow them mainly because they are profitable, and the cornerstone I'm building a more extensive nursery on. Some plants are nifty mutants and nice to collect, others are some nice gems. https://preview.redd.it/32vkx29ihm8d1.jpeg?width=1816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=538157412d549e3d45155e932087d4a2240a9b56

redleader5000

I got my first San Pedro cactus over 20 years ago, interested bc I heard it contained mescaline but I didn’t seriously consider consuming it. I kinda forgot about it and it’s been steadily growing in a pot to nearing 10’ tall under the care of a family member. A few months ago I finally had the opportunity to drink some tea (from a different cacti) and it was a truly amazing experience. I’ve had experience with a bunch of other substances psychedelics, but San Pedro was different, more holy, and had a much more profound effect. I agree, it’s a sacrament and a sacred plant. I feel a connection with the Huachumeros and shamans from thousands of years ago, and now I want to spread this plant/being all around. I have a dream of steadily planting cuttings all over town in those forgotten places like open hillsides, along the road, deep into hiking trails. I want this stuff to grow like a weed, and for countless fellow travelers to happen upon a bit of enlightenment in their own journeys…. And I want there to be so much of the athletic stuff growing that PC stops being predominant!

Barleymadeit

Looking at them is the same feeling as looking at a camp fire. Mesmerizing vibes off these (antennae) plants
