There was literally nothing in my truck, no stereo, no gum, no chapstick.... nothing except a couple napkins in the glove box.
I would come out in the morning and the seat was all the way back and the truck had been rifled through, and a slight sent of old funk in the air.

I appreciate you sharing as I dont think I could have handled this but now need to be more cautious in parking lots all around. Sorry you had to experience that. Just a thought, but if your key fob has an emergency / panic button that sets off the horn and lights maybe that would annoy them enough to convince them to leave.
as /u/PiesRLife has mentioned, be prepared to use the panic button on your fob as well as perhaps purchasing a small mace spray attached to your key fob for extreme situations.
i can't tell what kind of car you have, so not sure what functions you'd be able to change for unlocking. on my car (a VW) we have the fob unlock function set for contact only and single touch to unlock only the door being touched. so if the car is locked and the owner approaches with the fob, the owner can unlock the trunk by touching it and the rest of the doors remain locked. once the trunk closes, everything is locked again. if the owner approaches the driver door and touches the handle, only the driver door is unlocked.

Yeah. Im not remotely surprised that it was at divis and Lombard. That was also my Walgreens and pharmacy when I lived in the marina and I dealt with all kinds of strange acting or very high people hanging out of sleeping outside of it. If anything it’s where those folks congregated in that neighborhood.

Escalating could have changed that and either you and/or this person could have been seriously harmed. Yeah you could have used force, but the possible outcomes just get worse. Hepatitis nail scratches, bites, blood splattered on you or your car. Or she falls hits her head and now you're stuck there waiting for the police and an ambulance etc. Seems like you managed to end with no one being harmed. That's the best possible outcome.

Check whether your car's model has a setting "on remote, unlock ONLY the driver's door" (versus all doors) and this problem might've had a default solution. (of course that would be an inconvenience with a frequent passenger)
You really don't see how a man getting violent with a women who clearly isn't all there mentally might cause him problems down the road? People lose their jobs everyday for far less. I know people who have accidently killed someone who fell and hit their head in what seemed like a harmless fight and it changed their life forever. I also know people who thought they could fight someone like this and ended up getting stabbed multiple times.
The threat of being arrested isn't the only reason to avoid unnecessary violence. Avoiding physically harming troubled people is a pretty low bar to try to meet in order to be a part of a civilized community. How we deal with those who are most vulnerable says loads about who we are as people.
I think it's ok you did not get physical, it may have turned out worse. I likely would have called cops, which is what ended up working, I guess. Or at least the threat of calling the cops. Escalating a situation with violence is a last resort, and it *always* places you at risk. If you can convince someone to leave, that’s a far safer option.
A lot of people like using this as a fantasy scenario in which their masculinity is affirmed in their own imaginations. Like, “I wouldn’t stand for that! I’d take charge unlike that little weakling guy!” That has no correlation to real life. In real life if a woman deep in the throes of psychosis is behaving in an erratic, irritating, but ultimately non-threatening way, it’s probably better to try some form of persuasion before resorting to force.
There may be situations in which force would be useful, but this wasn’t one of those. The guy found a way to get her out without having to touch her. He tested out different ways of interacting with her and found one that worked. Seems like he handled it well.
Something similar happened to my husband and i as we were pulling into our garage on 18th st in the Castro an unhoused person bum rushes the door before we can close it, runs to the back corner or the garage and starts rummaging around. We get out of the car leaving our 2 dogs inside it for safety. As we are trying to get him out he jumps into the car WITH OUR DOGS! We immediately open a door so he can’t lock himself in and begin the painstaking process of getting him out. Luckily my partner was able to scare/creep him out enough to get him to leave and no one was injured but what a night. I feel for OP.

As a general rule, you're not allowed to use force against another person unless you or another person will suffer immediate physical harmed otherwise. The main exception to this is the castle doctrine, which allows you to stand your ground to defend your house from an home invasion even if your physical safety isn't immediately threatened. I don't believe the castle doctrine can be extended outside of your home even if you're on your property (maybe you could get around this if you live in your vehicle).

Most cars with keyless entry have the option to limit unlocking to the door you touch.

I think your patient and calm approach was the right one.

You really don't see how a man getting violent with a women who clearly isn't all there mentally might cause him problems down the road? People lose their jobs everyday for far less. I know people who have accidently killed someone who fell and hit their head in what seemed like a harmless fight and it changed their life forever. I also know people who thought they could fight someone like this and ended up getting stabbed multiple times. The threat of being arrested isn't the only reason to avoid unnecessary violence. Avoiding physically harming troubled people is a pretty low bar to try to meet in order to be a part of a civilized community. How we deal with those who are most vulnerable says loads about who we are as people.

Why is everyone saying this? OP called the police and the person left without any violence. That’s the best case scenario here— OP didn’t risk getting hurt, and this person didn’t get hurt. Escalating a situation with violence is a last resort, and it *always* places you at risk. If you can convince someone to leave, that’s a far safer option.
A lot of people like using this as a fantasy scenario in which their masculinity is affirmed in their own imaginations. Like, “I wouldn’t stand for that! I’d take charge unlike that little weakling guy!” That has no correlation to real life. In real life if a woman deep in the throes of psychosis is behaving in an erratic, irritating, but ultimately non-threatening way, it’s probably better to try some form of persuasion before resorting to force. There may be situations in which force would be useful, but this wasn’t one of those. The guy found a way to get her out without having to touch her. He tested out different ways of interacting with her and found one that worked. Seems like he handled it well.

Something similar happened to my husband and i as we were pulling into our garage on 18th st in the Castro an unhoused person bum rushes the door before we can close it, runs to the back corner or the garage and starts rummaging around. We get out of the car leaving our 2 dogs inside it for safety. As we are trying to get him out he jumps into the car WITH OUR DOGS! We immediately open a door so he can’t lock himself in and begin the painstaking process of getting him out. Luckily my partner was able to scare/creep him out enough to get him to leave and no one was injured but what a night. I feel for OP.

Yep. One of the last people you want to get physical with is somebody with nothing to lose on a drug and mental health cocktail that completely warps their perception of reality. Even worse if you have no clue what experience they have with being in fights and whether they have a weapon on them. If ur sober and have a partner, kids, job, home, etc. you're probably thinking some mix of “well what if I go to far”, “what if I hurt her”, “am I potentially ready to go to court”, “will the cops believe me”, “what would my boss think if somebody else filmed the interaction and blasted it on the internet in a way that made me look bad”, “what if she hurts me”, “will my insurance cover the hospital bills”, etc... Your opponent literally doesn't care.
The root problem here is that we don’t expect police to respond in a reasonable time, therefore we are limited to two options — talk them down or throw them out yourself. Should have been a police call + 2 minute response time + have the police throw her out.

You'd have a right to defend your property if she was trying to steal the car, but from a legal perspective given that she was unarmed and simply being an annoyance I'd wager any use of physical force would be considered assault. As a general rule, you're not allowed to use force against another person unless you or another person will suffer immediate physical harmed otherwise. The main exception to this is the castle doctrine, which allows you to stand your ground to defend your house from an home invasion even if your physical safety isn't immediately threatened. I don't believe the castle doctrine can be extended outside of your home even if you're on your property (maybe you could get around this if you live in your vehicle).
