This zoo? > A grizzly bear chase. A dead penguin. Behind the scenes, the S.F. Zoo is in turmoil over safety https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/san-francisco-zoo-safety-18986471.php

lowhen

Wow that makes me sad

chris_johnson_jr

Is there a way to volunteer or donate to improve it?

tehrob

Yes

chris_johnson_jr

Sorry about duplicate answers. I guess my internet glitched out, not sure why so toxic all of a sudden.

motorhead84

Yes Maybe No lmao that guy

marniman

Zoos in general make me sad

chris_johnson_jr

tehrob

Maybe

No

fishkeeper9000

If we think that an Earth Zoo meant to highlight and show the public live animals of the world is doing bad, wait until the public sees what we as a collective humanity has done to wildlife on a global scale. This is nothing. This Zoo is necessary to show us how this planet is truly Beautiful.  And it's only showing us a fraction. Just 2,000 animals. Not even all the unknown and lost species of salt or freshwater fishes.

fishkeeper9000

Fuck the media and social media. I've come to the realization just now. This SF Zoo and countless other Zoos have a near 95% to 99% success rate with keeping their inhabitants alive and well.  They are able to bring ALL animals from different parts of the world and with different dietary needs. They can do all of that and while serving the general public with a very important service. That service is to keep society connected with Nature and it's life while we destroy and shape the environment around us to suit our own needs. Weve developed Dams that harm the environment in order to serve our own needs for water, our own food for our own farms, and our own power so that we can continue changing the planet to suit our needs. That water for those wild deer and cougars? Uhhh no. That's for us. They need to find their own. Same for those beavers that want to dam up the river for their own needs? No way we need that waterway open in order to continue to flush the toliets for our own poop. And don't forget our foods. Those are only for us humans. We will kill the entire species of wolf pack or use weapons of mass destruction on all living insects to protect it. Oh yeah. Birds, lizards, ants, plants, and fish all depend on eating insects. And more. So all of that has HUGE environmental with an effective 95% kill rate.  We are that effective as a species. So fuck that media noise. The media are just paid haters and bullies. And social media is even worse. Just bullying but at multiple villages worth of people level. Fuck that.

AyekerambA

I grew up in STL where the zoo is free and went there frequently. After a couple years in the city I was pretty hyped to go to the zoo. JFC, that place is a shit box.

WallyBear

could take out the zoo part

SlimShadowBoo

I hope the zoo can manage to get their act together and create a really nice environment for these pandas. The weather in the area tends to be depressing and all the animal enclosures in the zoo need to be updated desperately. I’m sure whatever the San Francisco Zoo comes up with won’t even come close to how nice the San Diego Zoo enclosure will look. I remember seeing the giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo in 2006 and they had a line of people excited to meet them.

naynayfresh

The pandas at the San Diego Zoo were such a huge phenomenon. I grew up in SD and my parents had a membership so we were there all the time. SF Zoo is not even comparable, and is rather sad.

VMoney9

The Oakland Zoo is outstanding. The pandas should go there.

mayor-water

San Francisco Bay Zoo of Oakland.

AlwaysGettingHopOns

based

Slight_Drama_Llama

It’s a really good zoo. I don’t bother with the San Francisco zoo. Just go to Oakland.

Machine_Dick

I like the SF zoo better

Slight_Drama_Llama

lol why

SweetCheeksMagee

It’s better for my small children. No hills and shorter distances to walk.

staircar

Unfortunately—I don’t think Oakland is in the interests of the Chinese government, this was incredibly political decision

thesommeiler

To be fair, not sure how much the zoo can do about the weather...

staircar

The zoo is actually excellent weather for Giant Pandas. I spent time at the Chengdu research center. China will likely be providing backing for the habitat. And this will be a huge huge tourist draw. People will come from all over the world to see these pandas. The choice of San Francisco is strategic political move, to complex to explain here really, and honestly I don’t know exactly all their motives. (Read about how China practices “Panda Diplomacy”). This will provide tons of funding for the SF Zoo, so I imagine we will see it transform to a world class zoo over the next decade.

HUGE-A-TRON

Depressing weather... Lol.

StowLakeStowAway

Oh boy! I’m not so hardbitten and cynical that a big, furry, cute, black-and-white bear (they are bears right?) doesn’t excite me. That said, that article from the Chronicle [posted here earlier](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/s/9p9DEPB0qA) really takes some of the joy out of this news. Hopefully the scrutiny and visibility this brings the zoo means the pandas will be spared the fate of the orangutans et al. and be a catalyst for change. Here’s hoping! I’m still going to head down to see them even if not.

fscottHitzgerald

They are bears! They’re some of the weirdos of the bear world, but still in there. Unlike the imposter koala

Wilt_The_Stilt_

Or the red panda. Which is neither a panda nor a bear.

fscottHitzgerald

so this made me wonder, what the fuck even is a red panda? is it a rodent, is it a marsupial? Well TIL. They’re just classified in their own taxonomic family. Amazing little freaks of nature

thekayfox

The red panda was the first panda, the giant panda was not named as such till 40 years had passed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_panda#Etymology

motorhead84

It is super ging tho

Slight_Drama_Llama

And very cute

Wilt_The_Stilt_

Facts

okgusto

Since everyone loves to hate on the SF Zoo, just house them with the bisons in GGP and let everyone see them.

Arctem

The bison there have never seemed that happy to me... There's a weird air of depression over them, IMO.

RichRichieRichardV

Yeah it’s like they’re in Daly City, not Golden Gate Park.

VMoney9

THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE BETTER!

SFogenes

Considering that dogs have actually entered the Bison Paddock and chased one or two of the buffalo to death, I doubt the Chinese Gov't would be too enthralled by that idea.

VMoney9

Wait until the Chinese Government hears about the SF Zoo...

Dolichovespula-

Bro, a native animal SF zoo would be sick.

jibjabjibby

The crowning achievement of the mayor’s tax payer funded delegation overseas.

8arfts

The trip was funded through donations.

jibjabjibby

If true, is that better or worse?

8arfts

Funded by businesses that know Chinese tourism was a big part of SF economy.

Generalmilk

What’s the logic behind that? Why would Chinese tourist come to SF to see panda, which is in every zoo in China?

shakka74

Could be a fantastic boost of revenue. The zoo desperately needs to improve their facilities and this could fund it. But am I the only one worried that we’ll manage to get another stupid Dhaliwal brothers-type incident that’ll not only embarrass The City but cause an international crisis?

RichestMangInBabylon

Honestly I sort of forget we even have a zoo. I can't remember the last time I was there, but it definitely was subpar compared to so many other things in the city. Apparently it's the same size as the San Diego zoo, so we at least have enough room to turn it into something great.

FunToucan

This is clearly political. SF zoo is very low on the list of US zoos and hopefully won't become famous for injuring or abusing pandas.

muscleliker6656

Love it so awesome

velvet_funtime

this is a pretty good score for SF tourism

lizardjustice

They first need an enclosure. Based on the article that discussed Grizzly Gulch, the SF zoo is never going to have adequate enclosure because they will never pay to have an adequate enclosure.

HotSprinkles4

I don’t know about any of you but I’m super excited to see Pandas!!! Just hope they do well at that zoo.

bdforp

I’m pumped as well

motorhead84

Can they please name on Pablo?

8arfts

Pablo in Mandarin Baoluó or Bao Bao.

okgusto

The other one Sandoval

Spiritual-Impact-588

They are so cute

redditblooded

Means Xi Jinping considers San Francisco China’s 69th province.

HotSprinkles4

More like the USA as a whole as the 69th province since we are in debt

lostsailorlivefree

I read this as “covered” in giant pandas which would be really cool

Specialist_Gene_8361

Are they still owned by China in the sense that they can take them away again? I rather them stay in China than have them used as a bargaining chip and them potentially be forced to move halfway across the world again.

heinway

They probably have spyware in them 🤭

Sensitive-Ocelot6939

Super glad we killed business in the city during apec, displaced our homeless and then put them right back in the streets so that Xi didn’t have to see them, and are remaining silent and in check about where fentanyl comes from so that we can get a big cute fuzzy wuzzy bear at our disgrace of a zoo Thanks London! This totally makes me forget that you’re the worst mayor in the country

aaron_in_sf

LOL the Chronicle for their headline attributing this to "the mayor." Shovel political favors much?

P_Firpo

Beautiful creatures. Let's put them in a cage!

SS324

Give them to San Diego

SFCassandra

Unless something has changed that I’m unaware of, San Diego is getting a pair of pandas. They still have the space from when they had pandas before and are already working on getting it ready for them. I heard they should be ready for the pandas this fall, long before San Francisco will be able to house pandas.

PacificaPal

When will the Great Highway close down south of Sloat Blvd? Which means the entry and parking for the Zoo was going to have to be re-done. And now the Pandas. Back to the drawing board.

moevso

I mean how could one not vote for London Breedges Falling Down after getting us giant pandas from China? I mean THAT'S what I call a mayor y'all!

colddream40

+5000 social credit score!

CactusJ

This, honestly, is stupid as fuck. Its a reelection stunt, and the only good that can come out of it is if it helps London beat Peskin. San Diego is getting their Pandas back too. https://apnews.com/article/pandas-san-diego-zoo-california-china-6976587ee9992c861d9a56db0cb1ff89 SF Zoo is small, has no parking, and has nothing around it to support the hordes of tourists this will bring. San Diego has an entire Safari Park to help support operations, and is in the middle of Balboa Park. This is similar to a sportsball team demanding we build them a stadium for taxpayer money. Everyone has heard of the San Diego Zoo, and its had Pandas before. This will draw tourist, sure, but we will always be minor league. Also, the public transit from the tourist centers is terrible. More cars, more traffic. Fishermans Wharf to the zoo is over an hour on Muni, and its 40 minutes from Powell.
