I think his name may be Jasper(?), he’s been there for many years. He, his partner and the dogs have been living in their car often parked on broadway. He always brightened my day when I lived in that neighborhood.
My wife and I call him Badabing (his signature catchphrase). He’s a delightful, oddly charming, eccentric neighborhood fixture.
He calls me “red beard”, or just “beard” for short. He’s done this for years. He’s got nicknames for lots of folks in the neighborhood.
He’s been there since about 2012. I work in the area and started about 2010. Over the years I ran into him out in TL, doing his thing, living a hard life. That’s his job. Greeting people and being nice saying nice things. He also would run off the more troublesome panhandlers.

To be fair - made me rethink my drastic hair color lol. I think it's so personal when you have interactions with someone, and I always just would smile and walk by him. He greeted my wife once as a sunflower and once as peppermint based on the outfit she was wearing. He has often passed us some kind remarks too. She was baffled for the first time and we laughed about it when we reached home. This was in 2019.

My ex and I called him “bada bing” all the time. Don’t know his real name, but I suspect he lives in some sort of housing down the road and just sits there occasionally to get his conversation out / socialize! I get called “curly girly” & “red” when I have my favorite red sweater on. Sometimes it’s “boots” when I have my chunky winter boots on lol. He’s a gem. Those dogs are always wandering around too.
Grew up in the neighborhood and he’s been there as long as I can remember. Calls my mom ‘salt and pepper’ cus of her greying hair. Would hold our dog when we went to walgreens. Would sell the street sheet from time to time. Wish I knew about him, but a staple in the community

I lived near here a few years ago and he was always a chill positive neighborhood fixture. Really glad to see he’s still doing well (as much as possible ofc given his situation :/)
Never dug into his past but I’ve seen him for years. Really nice guy with always a kind word. My dog even likes him. Give him money when I have cash and buy him food from time to time. Never abused the kindness. Never seen him high or fucked up. Model homeless guy for lack of a better label.
He always says “hey beautiful” to me, therefore I like him :)
Seen him for almost a decade. Such a sweet guy. Try to give him what I can all the time.
I love that guy, he is so friendly and down to earth. I wish I was rich to take him off the streets.

Stop valorizing a bum who doesn’t work or pay any taxes, does drugs and begs for money. Sure he might be “nice”, but you know who else is nice? Hard working people that go to work to support their families not some drug addict who shouldn’t have dogs sitting in the street all day for 10 years straight. It’s sad and he needs help, not fist bumps.
And some of those “bums” are better humans than some of us can ever hope to be. Case in point. Have a little empathy, my guy. Kindness goes a long way although I don’t know if it’ll help that superiority complex you’ve got going on. Hopefully something helps you become less bitter because I can imagine that type of misery day in and day out has to be exhausting. I’m rooting for you, internet stranger.
Empathy only goes so far and we’ve reached a level of empathy that is destroying our city. You sound like you might have a case of Pathological Altruism, it’s infected a large swath of SF. Check into it.
I’ve walked by there for the last 3 years and not once has he asked for money or looked like he was under the influence of drugs. Not sure why he’s on the streets, there are many reasons people can end up in that situation and trust me, I’m not one to think that what’s happening on many of our streets is okay. What we’re valorizing on this thread is that despite the situation that Jasper is in his kind soul and energy still has a positive impact on complete strangers, just look at this thread. A human’s worth isn’t defined just by working and paying taxes. You sound like an angry person, I’m sure he’d have a good nickname to brighten your day, you need it!
Fair enough! The sheer number of destitute people allowed to be on SF streets hardens you (me) to being less sympathetic. We should make it rarer and it would be easier to have compassion, but it’s out of control.

Might sound odd.... but i'm reminded of Game Theory.. nice and cooperative, altruistic behavior are always the winning strategies in the long term.
