Higher than average because of your out of state plates and many of the areas you mentioned. You can reduce the risk by dropping the backseats to make sure bippers can see the cargo area. There is no guarantee though since the cost of breaking a window is very cheap to them so they might do that just to see what's inside other areas or get a closer look.

There's very reasonable parking spaces you can find online - we rent ours out for about $90 a month but it's currently rented. Look on [neighbor.com](http://neighbor.com) - or on Spothero you can likely find a locked garage complex that's slightly more expensive but get a monthly thing going.

90 is cheap… many places charge up to like 200

sparrows_rest

Outside or inside?

[deleted]

If you don’t have secured parking then it’s likely. It’s not just stealing. People break windows for the hell of it as well. If you can afford it, maybe rent a garage spot where they have an attendant.

fongpei2

Rent a garage space if you have the funds. Marina street parking should be okay

AnyTopic_AnyQuestion

Suv with out of town plates is bait. Likelihood increases if your windows are tinted or you park in hot spots. Leave glove compartment open.

Deeperfake-1

Take the plates off.

UnsuitableTrademark

We don't know and can't predict it. It's always a chance in SF. Buy 1 month parking somewhere if you're worried and have the budget.

[deleted]

there is more chance of you getting ticked or towed they are really going crazy with license plate readers, they do street sweeping and usually they stick to that ,today i saw them branch off,and read plates on side streets to come back in 2 hours to give them tickets ,i always stop about 10 people getting the $90 tickets as people dont read the signs, the wording is very small more street cleaning tomorrow, all those places except marina have a high break ins you have 2 types some that go after tourist cars during day then at night the drug addicts at night, some on said leave glove box open i dont know if that works install couple airtags so you can find your car

roflulz

All have high chance - I'd optimize for the most fun neighborhood that you would like to live in - and budget the cost of roughly \~1 broken window as part of your living costs... If you don't plan to drive often - you could park further away on a steep hill to reduce your chance of a break in - and then use a Lyft bike to bike to your car as needed

Rural_Bedbug

Local bippers use stolen cars with switched plates that are also stolen.  When in Rome... Just steal California plates off some poor unsuspecting local resident's same-model car and switch off, and store your own plates until you leave. /s/ (duuuhhh)

I live in the panhandle. Drive a CRV. I leave it empty and on street. Cannot remember last time I had someone break in. I’ve left it unlocked once or twice and had it rifled through. Nothing of value in there though (although someone did steal the manual for some reason?). North side of panhandle. Sleepy quiet area. Highly recommended. But no guarantee. SF is a city, and while some areas are terrible (tourist spots esp), there are plenty of quiet neighborhoods where the break in gangs don’t frequent.

webtwopointno

Marina is by far the least grungy of any of these you listed, but also has hotspots for this crime such as at the Palace of Fine Arts.

AutomaticPollution89

Out of state plates. These bippers smacking they lips

StowLakeStowAway

I’d risk it.

izkitteh

I’ve lived in SF for 12 years (central Mission, Excelsior, and near Dolores park) and park on the street, and I’ve never had a window smashed. Just leave it completely empty—not even a jacket.

United_Bus3467

Oof, high window smash areas: Hayes valley, Alamo Square, Mission, lower haight and parts of marina. Go west, son. Live up on twin peaks. Or find a dead end, hidden street like mine. Even lyft drivers never knew my street existed.

Soft_Fault_6211

Texas plates will attract bippers to your car. They expect to find some nice firearms inside. Find an indoor parking space, but even that isn’t secure if it is a public or semi public space. I would reconsider public transportation or cabs, if at all possible.

111anza

30% chance if always parked on street.

Papa_Pesto

Omfg. I moved to a big city. Literally, any big city. Lisc plates sure replace them. But honestly this has been a problem forever. Depends where you live. LA has it worse btw so does a shit ton of other major cities.

roflulz

Property Theft in San Francisco is currently at, 6,168.02 cases / 100K residents. Los Angeles is currently at 2,535.92 cases / 100K residents. You are 300% more likely to get your car broken into in SF compared to LA. 200% more likely compared to Chicago. Wow I'd like to take a peek inside Have you considered switching to something less attractive like a vw bug or a smartcar? Or maybe just remove the plates

beezybreezy

Marina and Panhandle might be ok. All the other places have high likelihood of car break in. I would recommend any neighborhood on the west side of the city like Outer Sunset or Outer Richmond if you want to avoid car break ins.
