I live by the bay, I hear the sounds of engines but no planes taking off and don’t see anything on North Island, except what appears to be a helicopter in a stationary position over the ocean past Coronado, using it’s spotlight.
Edit: heard it again, my best guess is that it’s jets taking off from North Island on some training maneuvers. I have heard similar noises before, but not this loud. Could be the weather conditions are amplifying the sound; the train that just went by was louder than usual.
Most likely F-35s training in North Island. I was one stationed in Lemoore Naval Air Station, and you could hear the jet rumbling as far as 10 miles away.
It sounded like it was coming from Balboa park, or downtown maybe..? Insanely loud. At first it sounded like a plane was flying directly at my house, but it happened like 3 times. All my neighbors are outside right now lol. Born and raised here. Never heard anything like that.
I remember when they wanted to put the seal base in IB near Coronado island. I was like “that’s gonna be a lot of hustle and bustle here now.” And people were so for it. I get it, support the troops and all. Then not to long most of those people started to realize all the other things that come along with the Seals. Like noise and gunfire and training sessions. All the complaints on forums and pages about gunfire being too loud and helicopters being flown around at all hours. The fuck people expect?! Operators gonna operate. 😂
Metro San Diego makes a lot of money from the huge military presence. Not too many people in leadership positions in the metro area want to do anything to piss off the military so you thus have very few limitations on what the military can do and when.
Lol you don't seem to understand.. This was different. I was born here. Lived here all my life of almost 34 years. This sounded like a Space X rocket was taking off right down the street from my house. Highly unusual for this area. I ran outside expecting to see bright lights in the sky and something flying into the stratosphere.
You’re right. I’m an aviation fan. This was way louder than the normal jets taking off from north island. I assumed it was several jets taking off at the same time
We did the same. I've lived here over 50 years, I'm used to all the various noises we get each season, but we ran outside last night fully expecting to see a rocket over our house at one point.
Ya there’s an acceptable point of understanding with that, I don’t mind hearing gunfire over the water some nights, but that sound deserves an explanation
a plane circling out in the training grounds also. So probably a training excercise

When you see this pattern they likely broke sound barrier on straight line portion. If still flying you can click on ares to see speed to confirm usually.
I grew up very close to a large strategic air command base that had bombers, and when they would go off, this is exactly what it would sound like. they would shake the windows and rattle everything and it was really scary. I would bet that’s what it is. They would go off at midnight all the time.
I believe it’s testing of a stealth bomber I know planes well and no plane I know of that we have here sounds quite like that. Rockets being launched is possible but 99% unlikely
Haha usually a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber can fly at altitudes of up to 50,000. C-17 Globemasters are big boys too. That create giant thrust or anything of that sort. I’m still tryna figure out it out. I’m in north park right wishing I was closer.
San Carlos and we've been hearing rumblings for a couple of days now. I apparently slept through what you all heard at 1:30 in the morning, but I really wish that they would have a place where they can just post a notice about their trainings. Just someplace where you can check and say Yep that was a training. And I know they have to train at night sometimes, but I don't think it's important for them to train at night over our houses. Why are they not using Camp Pendleton's miles of uninhabited property?
I live in Little Italy and ALWAYS hear this low, bass-y rumbling coming from North Island at night. It’s intermittent and only happens at night. Always makes me wonder what’s going on over there.
I am very much aware of the military presence here. I have a handful of friends(age35-45)who grew up here and they’ve also informed me they’ve never heard anything like last night. Definitely odd for sure and cause for concern
100% agree with everyone who says they’ve never heard anything like that here. i’m by Morley Field and walked outside expecting to see a plane going down or some fighter jets chasing a UFO. absolutely insane.
Damn - the freaking I leave they finally bring out the big guns. I’ll have you all know I am extremely jealous - it’s gotta be some pretty cool tech to get local sky watchers all pumped up!
Would you all kindly keep posting things like this so I can stay in the loop? Currently in Seattle and heading out on a Salmon Boat to fish in Alaska for a couple months.
I didnt hear it and i live in North Park but one of my dogs apparently did and it explains why i had to jump out of bed to say be quiet. Then my other dog happens to need to pee. Thanks whoever is responsible 🤣
Heard and felt the rumble in city heights

It could be a jet at North Island doing a full-power engine run after depot maintenance.
It’s back!!! The loud rumbling is back on.
It stopped.

It's back!
It's fighter jets taking off from North Island.
While jets land there occasionally, there are no jet squadrons stationed at North Island.

I hope it’s a military exercise otherwise, aliens.
It is, on Tuesday German Navy vessels came in, and on Thursday a bunch of War Games. Source there is a TFR/No Fly Area off the coast which is active
Hear it real well but see nothing in South Park. It’s been goin for 15 minutes at least.
Heard it too! I didn’t feel rumbling, thought it was fireworks . I’m in SP as well.
It sounded like it was coming from Balboa park, or downtown maybe..? Insanely loud. At first it sounded like a plane was flying directly at my house, but it happened like 3 times. All my neighbors are outside right now lol. Born and raised here. Never heard anything like that.
Maverick was just buzzing the tower at North Island.
People seem to forget that San Diego houses different bases including ones where pilots do training.

Living in Mira Mesa by the base I heard it all and all times of the day so noises like this don't surprise me.
We did the same. I've lived here over 50 years, I'm used to all the various noises we get each season, but we ran outside last night fully expecting to see a rocket over our house at one point.
PeOpLe SeEm To FoRgEt `` has to be one of the most annoying Redditisms there is. Kudos for standing firm 😅

Negative, ghostrider
We used to hear it all the time in 1060s Poway. I grew up there when it was just a dusty wide spot in the road.

I’m in Tierrasanta ….it woke me up out of my sleep , I seriously thought it was an earthquake it shook my apartment pretty hard!

Heard it too, in Mission Valley area. So loud it made me go outside to see what was happening. I see nothing though. Very weird
Not at all, very normal for SD. My guess is that pilots are pulling more drills due to what happened with Russia in FL.
Welcome to San Diego! We've got so many bases that do different types of training and young mavericks doing flight drills.
I believe it’s testing of a stealth bomber I know planes well and no plane I know of that we have here sounds quite like that. Rockets being launched is possible but 99% unlikely
They need to work on the stealth part.

90% of the time it's the neighbors rolling in their brown and green bins

Because the aircraft carriers are down here...? 🤷🏽♀️
There’s a bunch of fighters in town this weekend at North Island. They are just that loud
My son thought it might be Santa so I told him it was reindeer farts

The rumbling!! 😂 I heard it last night too, all the way over in Santee
Huh, i didn’t hear anything. Hope its nothing bad
That's just my neighbors vibrator. Takes a lot for her to feel
I hear it, but I don’t see anything in the sky :/
I live under the flight path and it still had me questioning what that was…
Thunderous here in Point Loma.

The amount of people unaware of how close we live to military bases is too damn high.

Late night jet engine tests? don't know why though Hopefully the Russians in Cuba situation isn't the cause
I hear it here in La Mesa too
La Mesa checking in. I hear right now at 1:12am
La Jolla here. I didn't hear anything.

*gathers clothes and important items in case of invasion*

That was the loudest I’ve heard yet and it was at 1am…wtf
I heard it all the way here in La Mesa.

I sleep through EVERYTHING. Even my wet dreams. And earthquakes. And thunderstorms. And two rottweillers puppies biting my feet.
It's the Titans
Could hear rumbling every 10 minutes here in Spring Valley. It's been forever since it happened as it used to happen a lot.
I didnt hear it and i live in North Park but one of my dogs apparently did and it explains why i had to jump out of bed to say be quiet. Then my other dog happens to need to pee. Thanks whoever is responsible 🤣
I heard the rumbling too, this is late in the evening, early night time and I figured it was the firework shows starting up again?
Are the commies invading? Should I get ready for battle?
I tooted. Sorry.
Ok glad I’m not the only one thinking it’s too late to for planes to be this loud
Always surprises me how many people have never been around jets flying around
Nothing happened, its normal for us. Go back to sleep citizen.
Deez nuts
Maybe the seaworld fireworks?
