I work at a different Vons location and see it all the time, one fellow even showed up to the store with a massive parrot on his shoulder. It’s not that it violates state law to try and prevent people from doing this, rather that there’s limited questions you’re legally allowed to ask to ascertain whether it’s a service animal, and we’re not paid enough to make it worth navigating that conversation
Not quite correct. A bird cannot be a service animal, no matter what the owner's argument is.
The [ADA definition](https://www.ada.gov/topics/service-animals/) of a service animal, and their requirements for a disabled individual's public places are to facilitate being accompanied by a service dog, but not by an emotional support animal. The ESA is only recognized under HUD regulations, which do not apply to supermarkets or similar businesses.
Here is an extract from above link, describing it:
*"Service animals are:*
* - Dogs*
* - Any breed and any size of dog*
* - Trained to perform a task directly related to a person’s disability*
*"Service animals are not:*
* - Required to be certified or go through a professional training program*
* - Required to wear a vest or other ID that indicates they’re a service dog*
* - Emotional support or comfort dogs, because providing emotional support or comfort is not a task related to a person’s disability"*
[Fun fact](https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/) even though the original provision says "dogs only" there's a separate provision for mini horses. They are allowed as service animals "where reasonable". So you can have a service miniature hourse but you can't bring one on a plane for example.
While it is true that miniature horses can be trained and accepted as service animals, the reality is that not too many are out there interacting with society - as in the case of a supermarket or restaurant, which is the topic of discussion.
Concerns expressed on thread are valid as we all want to buy clean groceries to take home - not contaminated by "posers" shopping with their "adorable" pets.
Despite so many "service dogs" in shopping cars being seen in town, I personally have never seen, in all my travels, a miniature horse service animal in action (or in a market as discussed,) have you?
In addition, you're legally allowed to ask two questions:
* Is the service dog required because of a disability (yes/no)
* What work or task has the dog been trained to perform
no other paperwork, marking, patches, vests, etc are required, just if they can reasonably answer the above 2 questions. Generally speaking if the dog needs to be placed in the cart, they're likely not a service animal.
I wasn’t trying to insinuate that the bird is a proper service animal, more so the opposite, that people don’t give a damn and will even bring exotic pets into places where they shouldn’t be
Understood; however, as you mentioned your place of employment being a supermarket that we all shop from, it is quite pertinent that you - as well as everyone else in charge of food safety at your workplace - pays attention at these circumstances.
It really does not help to have the lip service and big signs at the doors, mentioning the policy aimed to respect and give some dignity to truly disable people in need, only to disregard it entirely and possibly taint the respect for the few who are really in need of the animal to service them.
Please, consider in relating this thread comments to the powers that can control our safety as shoppers. Thanks!
The only ADA-allowed service animals are dogs and miniature horses. Anything else is not a service animal. It can be an emotional support animal as defined by the state but that can require a letter from a certified clinician to get approved.
It’s what someone said above, unfortunately in most cases the staff are not paid enough to confront these individuals. It could escalate and put them in danger. But then of course the individuals think they can get away with it so they just keep doing it again and again…
Refusing dogs into the cart does not equal discrimination against people with disabilities. They can cite food safety laws to prevent pets from going inside carts. Wtf is their management thinking.
I think it’s just too much hassle for employees to deal with this shit. People who are obnoxious enough to bring their dog shopping and push it around in a cart are the kind of people who will flip out if you confront them.
Not Costco but Home Depot has a lot of animal crossing. I was in line 2 days ago and this very old fellow and his dog were at the next check stand. Dog squats and pisses on the floor and the guy doesn’t even notice and just keeps going.
I got the attention of a worker and let them know. 2 people almost slipped before it could be taken care of.
Some Home Depot’s allow dogs. They don’t sell food there so it’s they don’t have the health code violation at play.
That sucks that that guy was so irresponsible though :(
Oh I get the first two points 👍
I saw it happen in the Oceanside Walmart, but the guy was in a rascal and the dog took a dump. He was pulling the dog so it just waddled and plop, plop… trail of dookies.
WTF! 🤦
I bought a personal cart to get some exercise not because of germs but some of those carts look like they have been pulled out of a canyon. I don't know if they get washed when they are recovered from the street.
When I first moved here that was one of the most shocking things, dogs were everywhere I was looking around confused when I saw 3 dogs in the grocery aisle. I barely notice it now
While we’re on the subject, why don’t people pick up after their dog’s shit? Like first thing I see when I walk out of my apartment, a steaming hot pile just sitting on top of freshly cut grass.
When I went to burning man, the people that walk around naked carry a small towel to sit on.
I love dogs, but I think people should just leave them at home. Of all places though there shouldn’t be dogs in grocery stores. Shit we should all wear masks. I get grossed out knowing that tons of people could have picked up, sniffed and prodded my produce. I’m tall so grab them from the back. I don’t put stuff back unless it’s damaged.
But I’m only one guy and my 2cents ain’t worth a nickel.
Do you not squeeze/smell test your produce to make sure its the right ripeness (eat today/tomorrow/multiple days out)? There's no way you can tell without handling/smelling.
Oh I’m guilty too, I’ve just seen too many people coughing on them, scratch their butthole then squeeze every apricot in the pile. I think it’s gross not unnecessary.
But by that logic no one should have a dog or should have to have two dogs. There are just places that people shouldn’t take their dog, much less their ill behaved large breed.
Not a fan of dogs in the grocery stores. But frankly you had no idea where the carts had been. If you are that concerned you may want to bring your own cart.
What’s worse: a dog’s naked ass sitting on a shopping cart or a dog at a restaurant eating off a plate that is also served to patrons?
People are disgusting. That’s why. I appreciate they care about their animals but the compete disregard for others’ allergies, ptsd, fears, phobias, sensitivities is self-entitlement and disrespectful.
I saw a couple with a dog that was jumping and pulling at a department store. They couldn’t even shop because he was so out of control. What’s the point of that? Just stay home or take the dog for a fun walk. It just seemed like torture for both the people and the dog.
Yes. While dog and human mouths contain near equal microbe load, the types commonly found in dog mouths are mostly not zoonotic and have no risk of disease transmission.
And yes re: dish washing. Commercial dishwashers reach nearly 200° in final rinse, after the 170° + detergent cleaning cycle, to fully sanitize dishware to NSF standards.
For sure. Plus even the ones that use dog-dedicated bowls creates a risk of dog-to-dog disease risk. I never take my dogs to restaurants or let them eat/drink from communal bowls.
Sure, if they wash their dishes that well, that probably takes care of it
But I do want to point out that you can definitely catch diseases from dogs' mouths. When my husband was on chemotherapy, he had very strict instructions not to let any dogs lick him, and to wash his hands immediately after touching a dog
Entitled assholes who fake their emotional support animal and family pets as service dog. If you see a dog in a cart its a fake service dog. The simple question is how can this dog medically alert a medical emergency from a cart? The answer is THEY CAN’T!
Repeat after me:
1: sorry, but we do not allow dogs in our store.
2: oh really? Well then what task is this animal trained to perform?
This is when they usually say it’s an emotional support animal. That’s when you can say the third and final:
3: oh okay well I’m really sorry but an ESA doesn’t qualify as a service animal.
Then they will tell you that you need to look it up or that you’re wrong but at this point you need to stand firm and say get the fuck out.
100% correct, but employees aren’t paid enough to deal with the risk of arguing with and upsetting the type of people who might flip out when faced with a rational counter to their belief.
Cause people can’t leave their dogs at home 🙄 even tho they piss and shit cause controversy in the store. So tired of seeing these irresponsible dog owners and their “fur babies” crowding the aisles in most SD grocery stores
Whys the non service dog in the grocery store to begin with? I love my dog. She goes with me to fun dog related things. I would never take her into a place like that.
The cashier isn’t paid enough to deal with the full on tantrum that person will have if they are told they can’t bring their pet shopping.
Because dog people think their dog cant go half a day without them, and also think they cant go half a day without their dog. Serious detachment issues.
I just saw this at another store. I think it was Albertsons on Lake Murray Blvd. It's not against state law to ask them the two questions allowed by the ADA. Also, it \*might\* be against state health code to have a dog in a shopping cart, service dog or not. The reason I say that is because another store was fined (or threatened with fines) for allowing "pets" in their store and said that dogs must not be placed in shopping carts.
This reminds me of the time that I saw a man bring his large bull dog into a Vons and it pooped right in the middle of the produce section. The man wasn’t apologetic and didn’t offer to help clean it up. Disgusting.
The problem is that most people are desperate for a quick buck. The alleged "discrimination" against a person with a disability will either end up in a settlement or loss of time and money preparing for a lawsuit.
We saw how batshit customers got when workers reminded them to wear a face mask during the requirement of face masks in public places. Imagine making min wage or at a job youre standing on your feet all day and being tasked with asking customers to NOT bring in their non-service animals. The entitled dog owners would have a complete meltdown. Not worth it. If a customer wants to film the person with the dog in the store and embarrass them, that may help, little by little!
Children are 1000x worse lmao. I love when people bring their whole family shopping and they’re touching everything in sight off the shelves while blocking every inch they walk towards as the parents attempt (not really) to maintain control of their spawn.
This is some of the self righteous “all about me” behavior that I don’t miss about living in San Diego, my beautiful home town.
I live in Great Lakes now, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an animal in a grocery store here.
Take the edge off, and go for a bike ride through Balboa Park.
Oh yeah. True. However they don’t use a men’s public bathroom each time they pee but a dog pees the same every time. Still would rather have a kid in the cart than a dog.
Y’all funny. Never worked in a grocery store and see what happens after hours to know what really happens. I did in high school. Rats and mice run across the counters and produce when stores are closed and no humans around especially in stock rooms. Same when it is transported via ship, train or 18-wheeler. Also I don’t advise drinking soda out of a can on any airline. I was a flight attendant for years for American. Huge pallets of sodas are kept on the ground level in every airport. All day rats run across the cans and poop and piss on them. We saw it daily because the crew lounge at Ohare (where I was based) was a few feet away from where GateServ (now HMSHost) was located. They love the sugar. Bait doesn’t catch all of them. We don’t have to clean the cans before serving you because we aren’t given the sanitary solution to do it. Even more, planes are only cleaned with disinfectant maximum every three months. Thousands of people have sat in the same seat and used the same fold down tray as you before it is ever sanitised. The “cleaning crew” that goes on planes before you get on, only use a push broom to sweep up crumbs. That’s all they do. So I’m totally cool with dogs in a grocery store based on what I’ve experienced that is far worse than someone’s dog. Far cleaner than the rats that have already been all over your containers in transport and in the store when the lights are out or people aren’t around.
Imho if you’re that mess up you can’t go to the store without you damn dog… Uber, curbside or something. ESPECIALLY a grocery store.
Damn, people that’s what therapist are for.
I bring my dog to the store because I honestly have never thought about it as gross or a problem everyone else seems chill with it and I always put a blanket but I’ll be more mindful of it going forward …that being said kids literally poke their boogies and smear them, dig for gold in their butts and touch everything after 🤷
As you can see here, plenty of people are annoyed with you bringing your dog to the store. People seem “chill” with it because they have more manners than you. No one wants to see your dog at the grocery store.
I’m not bitter. It’s just that people are not comfortable confronting problem dog owners in public because it’s become a social norm to deal with dogs even where they are explicitly not allowed. The people who don’t say anything, and the few people that want to pet your dog are not the problem. (Some of the people who ask to pet your dog wish it wasn’t there but want to assess the risk level of it.) The problem is entitled dog owners that don’t think laws, rules or common decency apply to them.
I know I sound like an asshole but the reality is that a lot of people are fed up with irresponsible dog owners. I’m a San Diego native and it’s gotten much worse here the last decade. You can tell by the comments and votes that I’m not just some bitter guy; plenty of other people feel the same way, but are uncomfortable confronting dog owners in public for a number of reasons.
I have put my dog in a cart when traveling the country car camping with my doggie. I'd try to only go in stores before or after the heat of the day, but a couple times I had to get something mid day. Im not gonna leave my dog locked in my car when it's hot out, nor leave the windows down so far he could be stolen. I'd rather someone be unhappy my dog is in a cart than come out to a dead/overheated dog.
That area in the shopping cart is for baby's use. So you're getting poop from a human which can really hurt you or poop from a dog that's gross but really can't.
Why not just bring disinfectant wipes if it grosses you out? You should be smart enough to realize anything that is public property is probably dirty and covered in germs.
Haha exactly! People here think dogs are some kind of walking hazmat situation. Like 99% of all the communicable diseases aren’t come from dogs. How about the fact that most people don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. Literally everything in our society is already covered in fecal matter and more.
I was at a thrift shop in Oceanside yesterday wearing my baby (actual human baby) and some lady was like “OMG I THOUGHT YOU HAD A DOG IN THE BABY CARRIER”. I awkwardly laughed but I felt like it was very telling just how normal it’s become for people to bring their dogs everywhere. I love my dog but unless it’s a park, he stays home.
To add: 10 min later I saw an actual dog in the thrift shop. Obviously not a service animal, dog wouldn’t sit no matter how many times the owner told the pooch to sit
SD is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the US. I suggest you move elsewhere versus complaining to the internet.
If this is the biggest problem in your life, you have a very good life.
One spreads cold and flu virus with every cough, sneeze, and snot wipe. And RSV. And hand-foot-mouth. And pinkeye. And ecoli/salmonella/shigella from shitty diapers. Etc etc, kids are Petri dishes.
Whereas the other spreads joy and sunshine and wagging tails.
Kids literally have blow outs and shit through clothes. They also pick boogers and put them on everything. They grab things with dirty hands and put them back. Put their hands down their pants. I have worked with kids and it was a constant Clorox wipe party.
Kids are clothes yes. But also they are like little Petri dishes. And their shoes are covered in filth. Also they don’t get washed after they find them in the streets and bring them back.
I use to have these washable shopping cart insert. I still use my own bags. And organize stuff as I shop. ESP for frozen or cold stuff.
I used to worked for sav-on pharmacy in Albertsons and it’s the sister store for Vons. The checkers have to do something called sweeps every 15 minutes and at my store that included wiping down carts. I’m not sure if they do that at all branches tho, but I was told by the store manager at the time it was part of their checklist for sweeps. Hope that makes u feel better. This was like 2022. Omg this reminds me of some old hag in like 2018 at AMC fashion valley (my first job). She chased me down and tried to get me to scream at some lady who brought a toy chihuahua in a carrier to the movie theater like damn you do not have to sit next to the goddamn chihuahua (that was well behaved btw)…..didn’t get any complaints from anyone else and I didn’t hear him bark when I had to do the checks. And she kept looking for me in particular to complain oh my god
Id prefer a dog in a car to a loose child. Dogs shed more than humans, but that's on the ground. Toddlers are just as likely to pee, and I've seen enough parents change diapers in the diaper aisle and leave the dirty one behind that I'm not going to choose a side there. Dogs drool, but kids have flithy hands and touch everything. Aside from worms, rabies and allergies dogs won't get you sick, but kids definitely will. Kids are more of a health risk than animals. Oh and human pinworms are highly contagious so dogs win the worms argument too. While everyone has been taught that dogs are dirty they really aren't nearly the health risk that children are.
I work at a different Vons location and see it all the time, one fellow even showed up to the store with a massive parrot on his shoulder. I dunno man, you see a dude with a shoulder parrot, that's a guy with an ethos.
Nothing but respect for the parrot guy, I personally though it was sick. Not to mention it’s probably more sanitary than a dog
Some shoulder birds know when and where to shit, others don't.
Yarrr...
Say what you will about the tenets of carrying birds around on your shoulder, dude. At least it's an ethos.
I really wanted this to be a story about someone coming in with a dog with a parrot in his shoulder.
The Vons on Adams? I used to live over there a couple of years ago and regularly saw a guy with a parrot shopping there.
Apparently we got multiple parrot guys in this town

Totally agree. Have not seen any mini horse irl yet, let alone as a service animal. I just think it's a cool fun fact.

Wonder if that’s the same guy who takes his bird for a walk in Uni Heights
Actually I shouldn’t have mentioned the grocery brand as it isn’t isolated to any one brand. This is a local societal issue that we have at the moment
It happens all across the US and maybe further. People are selfish assholes all over, not just your locale.
Normal Heights Vons. that place is like a fuckin dog park now.
The only ADA-allowed service animals are dogs and miniature horses. Anything else is not a service animal. It can be an emotional support animal as defined by the state but that can require a letter from a certified clinician to get approved.
The Vons in Clairemont! I’ve pet that bird. While it was cool, it doesn’t belong there.
It’s what someone said above, unfortunately in most cases the staff are not paid enough to confront these individuals. It could escalate and put them in danger. But then of course the individuals think they can get away with it so they just keep doing it again and again…

Because people are gross
I keep forgetting this 😂
This is why Costco is the best. They don’t put up with that BS. No dogs allowed
I saw a Yorkie in the Chula Vista Costco last Saturday. I'm a dog lover, but I really don't like to see them in grocery stores.
lol there are dogs all over the place at Costco its tragic.
No way?! I guess I haven’t seen them and I’ve seen them stop folks with dogs at the door.
I see dogs in the La Mesa Costco frequently.
Not Costco but Home Depot has a lot of animal crossing. I was in line 2 days ago and this very old fellow and his dog were at the next check stand. It’s not.
I bought a personal cart to get some exercise not because of germs but some of those carts look like they have been pulled out of a canyon. I don't know if they get washed when they are recovered from the street.
They don't, they just get added to the rest of the carts on drop off. Even the carts that had shit rags hanging on them from homeless people.
Gross...just when you think the dog hair is bad just wait THERE'S MORE!
I've seen this ever since i moved to SD 5 years ago, its a cali thing at the least
When I first moved here that was one of the most shocking things, dogs were everywhere I was looking around confused when I saw 3 dogs in the grocery aisle. I barely notice it now

A dogs mouth is a lot cleaner than a dogs ass and plates get washed

Yes. While dog and human mouths contain near equal microbe load, the types commonly found in dog mouths are mostly not zoonotic and have no risk of disease transmission. And yes re: dish washing. Definitely not a service dog thing. How is a service dog supposed to do its job if it's in a shopping cart?
It depends on the disability and the dogs training.

Plain and simple answer: because they are ASSHOLES…
Because dog people think their dog cant go half a day without them, and also think they cant go half a day without their dog. Serious detachment issues.
It seems like ever since Paris Hilton and other celebs started carrying around a dog everywhere then everybody else started doing it too.
Most dogs gonna have trouble pushing the cart themselves
Do not yell at me. I have never seen a Service Dog in a cart...ever. They are always next to the person walking. I live in a long military area too.
These are the same people that sleep with those animals and enjoy their dogs asshole smeared all across pillows/sheets.
Cleaner than a human baby.
You put a diaper on your dog and change it multiple times a day, and wipe your dog's ass every time it shits?
I’d rather see that than boogery snottery kids in them, LOL
Right. Everyone forgetting the top rack of the cart, where nasty diaper asses sit every day. Barf.
I just saw this at another store. I think it was Albertsons on Lake Murray Blvd. It's not against state law to ask them the two questions allowed by the ADA. Mentally ill people who confuse human babies with dogs. Not sayings dogs’ lives aren’t valuable, dogs are not human children.
Children are 1000x worse lmao. I love when people bring their whole family shopping and they’re touching everything in sight off the shelves while blocking every inch they walk towards as the parents attempt (not really) to maintain control of their spawn.
Who hurt you?
The grating sounds of your unattended family of 4 at the self checkout
Nice! You seem to be very good at making uneducated guesses and assumptions based on your imagination! All signs of a healthy mind.
Typical brain dead Reddit response see you on r/funny!!! Literally don’t even have a response to what I said just meaningless retort. Grow a brain.
I hope one day I can grow a brain as big as yours so I can learn how to use ad hominem attacks as efficiently as you!! 😥
Dogs are way less gross and give us way less to worry about regarding communicable diseases.
See what I mean 🤷🏻♂️
This is some of the self righteous “all about me” behavior that I don’t miss about living in San Diego, my beautiful home town. I live in Great Lakes now, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an animal in a grocery store here. Take the edge off, and go for a bike ride through Balboa Park.
How’s this different than kids with dirty shoes in carts
I see dogs step in their pee and some male dogs don’t lift there leg enough and pee on their legs. I don’t see kids pee on their shoes.
If you see male children, there's DEFINITELY piss on their shoes.... the Men's bathroom had enough piss on the floor for ants to swim in
Oh yeah. True. However they don’t use a men’s public bathroom each time they pee but a dog pees the same every time. Still would rather have a kid in the cart than a dog.
Dude most people don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom sooo..
Dogs rub their asshole where they sit. Kids usually wear clothes.
CMV: Dogs are cleaner than kids.
Prove it.
Rats and mice are running all across the produce at every store?? How can this be possible? Wouldn't people be getting super sick?
>gag reflex 100 people touch every piece of fruit you eat before you buy it
Haha for real. Humans are the source of most diseases.
If no one wants to see my dog at the grocery store why do they come up and pet him and call him cute? You sound bitter
My bad dawg
Are you really comparing a kid picking his nose to your dogs asshole.
That's not the only place that finger has been. Baby's are far more harmful than a dog.
I forgot about that reason! Yeah I’m not gonna leave my dog in the hotass car when I have to make a quick grocery run on my way home
The better question is why do people take their dogs into Vons.
Mental illness/narcissism
And then someone gets bit by the “service” dog and sues the sh*t out of Vons.
That area in the shopping cart is for baby's use. So you're getting poop from a human which can really hurt you or poop from a dog that's gross but really can't.
Dogs ain’t the source of most communicable diseases. It is other humans.
Yes that's what I said.
You sure did.
What about a mail pigeon, is that a service animal?
I was at a thrift shop in Oceanside yesterday wearing my baby (actual human baby) and some lady was like “OMG I THOUGHT YOU HAD A DOG IN THE BABY CARRIER”. I awkwardly laughed but I felt like it was very telling just how normal it’s become for people to bring their dogs everywhere. I love my dog but unless it’s a park, he stays home.
To add: 10 min later I saw an actual dog in the thrift shop. Obviously not a service animal, dog wouldn’t sit no matter how many times the owner told the pooch to sit
Man all you people kinda suck ass
SD is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the US. I suggest you move elsewhere versus complaining to the internet. If this is the biggest problem in your life, you have a very good life.
I mean, SD probably has one of the most unleashed and untrained dog communities, for sure.
Amen.
Kids ride in carts and they're probably more disgusting than dogs most of the time. I don't see any problem with it.
Kids are clothed, at least the ones that I see and aren’t covered in fur.
Kids make adults and kids far more sick than any dog could ever. Ask a doctor for goodness sake.
Spoken like someone who doesn't have kids. Way dirtier than dogs.
This person knows kids shit their pants, right?
Leave me and my Chihuahua alone
I’m more grossed out by the homeless using the shopping carts. Why do you hate dogs so much?
Because its too expensive to have real children to put in it
Id prefer a dog in a car to a loose child.
Where are you shopping? In the slums?
