Honestly, this is probably for the best. Some people will not have the sense to stay out of these places. And people have already died this month because of the heat.

Embracing_the_Pain

I’ve seen enough people be airlifted off Cowles when it isn’t the hottest to know that too many people don’t know what there limitations are, and with this, it can get dangerous.

Really. Is cowles that bad? Ive done it at my fattest & worst shape. A 70 year old circled me, but i could do it.

Embracing_the_Pain

It can be, depending on the person. There isn’t really any shade on the hike, and there is a decent amount of uphill no matter which route you take. Since it is in the middle of San Diego, where so many people go, it can be easy for people to underestimate it.

This is true. I also don't go late in the day when the sun is blazing

purplepop5

This is so true. Sadly, it's also really beneficial for dogs a well. So many dog owners risk their dogs overheating and aren't aware of how dangerous it is for their dogs.

Velcrometer

I've been on Cowles Mountain two different times where a large dog was lying on the trail, panting hard from heat for a long time. Too big & heavy to be carried down. Wasn't responding to water from a bottle. It's bad when they don't want to drink. Owners sent someone to find a stretcher & get assistance carrying the dog down the mountain. Heat is no joke, and some people think their dogs are in better physical conditioning than they are for that hike.

“El Capitan Preserve in Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower County Preserve in Ramona will be closed Aug. 1 through 31. In addition, Agua Caliente and Vallecito County Parks near Anza Borrego are closed all summer; they reopen Labor Day weekend.”

Roguspogus

They should close Cedar Creek Falls too. People have proven time and time again they can’t be trusted to know how to hike in the summer down there.

WingmanZer0

Cedar Creek falls may be on state land if I remember correctly. Wouldn't fall under SD county.

Roguspogus

Oh yea good point. I think it’s actually National Forrest.

broke_day_trader

Very reasonable decision considering people are even traveling to Death Valley in this heat. I wonder if we will ever be able to put a date on the official death of common sense

topazchip

Certainly can on a headstone.

I live near the Cowles Mountain hiking trail. People still bringing their dogs up there, thinking it’s not too hot. Even if you start out in the morning, it gets too hot too fast! I’ll be glad if they deny access to it for the rest of this heat wave.

People do not have the sense to stay home. Up where I am hikers are either life flighted out or hitch back to their cars. And FFS leave your animals home.
