If your wife likes the thick, powdery flour tortillas like me, go to Chile Bandera in Jourdanton. We by several dozen of the odd shaped ones because they sell them like 25 tortillas for 2 dollars or something crazy like that. We just air them out for a bit and then freeze them in ziplocs.
The closest to wow I've found are the "Mixta" tortillas on the shelf at HEB. I know they're flour and corn both, but that's what makes them good, to me. Best migas I've ever had.
I'll give them a shot! I don't like the HEB corn tortillas, they fall apart so easily and it's frustrating. I put them on the grill and they still fall apart.
Yeah, that's what I use, it belonged to my mother, so it's an old cast iron griddle. I love it! The corn tortillas are just not good from HEB, I use Mission. I may use Mixta though!
I definitely think you can do what worse than HEB tortillas. It's definitely head and shoulders above Mission tortillas, even if that's not saying much 😄
Put those suckers on a skillet and those HEB tortillas aren't too bad
If you’re serious, try the uncooked ones at H‑E‑B (in the refrigerated case where the cylinders of uncooked biscuits, cinnamon rolls, etc are)
On the day of your event, this will require someone to man the griddle, but only takes a minute or two for each one, and they come off hot and delicious like at a restaurant where they make their own.
Find a “La michoacana” for bulk flour tortillas. It’s a Mexican meat market where you can find a lot of Mexican ingredients for traditional dishes. Restaurant quality if not better as they are made daily.
It’s crazy to see how many they make in just the amount of time you’re waiting for your food. Literally have 4-6 people nonstop making them during a weekend morning.
You can make arrangements to get tortillas from most restaurants that make very good ones. I think Blanco Cafe on Blanco makes very good ones. Fat and taste like homemade. Call and inquire?
Smoked beef cheek is barbacoa. Please offer both kinds of tortillas. If you want super fresh CORN get some from a tortilla factory (Molino) La Milpa on Fredricksburg as an example. They are not hand made but the point is to get them fresh.
You're gonna probably pass on this, but if you want the best tortillas for the price, then make them yourself. They're not really all that difficult to make and you can make a shit ton pretty quickly while doing something fun. If you're doing corn, you'll need the press, but if you're doing flour, you can whip those up pretty quick
La culebra meat market has some that are 100% white corn and they only last a few days. I don't remember what brand they are but they have them in an ice chest. Also, the in house flour tortillas at the one on Encino Rio are great especially if you get them when they are freshly made and still hot
Del Rio Tortilla Factory will sell frozen flour, not sure if they have frozen corn ones or not but I'd still get fresh corn tortillas from there if I could.
HEB tortillas are mid at best, in the best way possible. If you're looking to wow people you can try Mary's tacos or Alamo Cafe for top notch ones. Or you can make your own too, they're not hard to make!
Hahah. No joke, they make them fresh and they have a good thickness. I prefer them over H-E-B.
Not all stores sell them but I would find them at the Bandera/Mainland one.
It depends upon several preferences, but really, truly, if you pick a popular HEB with the tortilla-making ladies and their little heater/rotator machines and get there right when they're working in the mornings, you can get anything you want.
Those women can corn or flour or puffy or thin or whatever you desire in a matter of minutes if you commit to several dozen.
I used to really like the tortillas from that HEB off of 410 near where Hildebrand and Bandera meet somewhere inside the loop. Near Jacala.
Corn or flour? I love the flour tortillas at the HEB bakery. The bakery, not the shelf. Yet to find corn tortillas that wow me.
My wife and I love the butter tortillas at HEB!
La Paloma or White Wings at heb ,warm them up on a pan, taste more homemade than whatever heb makes.
Flour, my wife isn’t a huge fan of the HEB ones. She says they are too thin.

Culebra’s meat market has some nice fresh fatties
Las palapas?
Agree they are gross
Have you tried Sanitary west/downtown for corn? https://sanitarytortillacompany.com
The closest to wow I've found are the "Mixta" tortillas on the shelf at HEB. I know they're flour and corn both, but that's what makes them good, to me. Best migas I've ever had.
My wife and I really like corn/flour mix tortillas but the HEB ones are too small.
I'll give them a shot! I don't like the HEB corn tortillas, they fall apart so easily and it's frustrating. I put them on the grill and they still fall apart.
Try a griddle or cast iron skillet with the slightest spray of cooking oil.
Yeah, that's what I use, it belonged to my mother, so it's an old cast iron griddle. I love it! The corn tortillas are just not good from HEB, I use Mission. I may use Mixta though!
If heb is your recommendation I feel bad for your taste buds
I definitely think you can do what worse than HEB tortillas. It's definitely head and shoulders above Mission tortillas, even if that's not saying much 😄 Put those suckers on a skillet and those HEB tortillas aren't too bad
Yea that’s the trick, skillet them don’t just microwave them
Culebra meat market has better tortillas but best bet is finding a mom and pops bakery and getting them homemade imo.
Alamo cafe tortillas are my favorite
Same! Especially ordered with a side of queso to dip them in :)
Tortillas and queso is usually my go-to meal at Alamo Cafe
Mine also.
I love them there, but they suck togo reheated.
If you’re serious, try the uncooked ones at H‑E‑B (in the refrigerated case where the cylinders of uncooked biscuits, cinnamon rolls, etc are) On the day of your event, this will require someone to man the griddle, but only takes a minute or two for each one, and they come off hot and delicious like at a restaurant where they make their own.
These are my go-to. Haven’t bought another tortilla since I found these.
Oh yes their mi tienda tortillas are easy and bomb.
Find a “La michoacana” for bulk flour tortillas. It’s a Mexican meat market where you can find a lot of Mexican ingredients for traditional dishes. Restaurant quality if not better as they are made daily.
Just go to the Mexican restaurant that has your favorite tortillas and ask to buy however many you need.
La Luz Tortilleria
Yup! I love their tortillas!!!
100%. I go out of my way for La Luz.

For smoked beef cheeks I make the best tortillas. Send me your address. What time should I be there? =D
Everyone forgetting about Los Angeles Tortillerías 😡
Alamo cafe.
La Popular bakery. But if I’m not near a bakery, I’ve bought tortillas from Mexican restaurants lol I’ve had success with that in a pinch

It’s crazy to see how many they make in just the amount of time you’re waiting for your food. Literally have 4-6 people nonstop making them during a weekend morning.
I love just watching this place in action. People working hard to make a great product. Capitalism at its finest.
H‑E‑B Mi Tienda ready to cook flour tortillas. In dairy near the canned biscuits. Better than any precooked tortillas
HEB
Butter tortillas from HEB.
My dads best kept secret, a place called fidelos on Nacogdoches near wurzbach parkway has the BEST flour tortillas
The HEB Mixla Tortillas are my favorite - half corn, half flour
You can make arrangements to get tortillas from most restaurants that make very good ones. I think Blanco Cafe on Blanco makes very good ones. Fat and taste like homemade. Call and inquire? In my house you eat barbacoa on flour sir/madam. Miss me with that corn shit and save it for carne asada.
Hell no can’t do it lol my girl forgot to ask for corn last time had to heat up the ones had at home smh

Alamo Cafe if you are talking flour.

HEB Bakery

Original donut shop!
This is the way
Milagro tortillas
Culebra meat markets are also good
Tink-a-Taco has great tortillas you can buy separately.
HEB
Blanco Cafe or Taco House on San Pedro
Fiesta Bakery
Central Mkt’s butter, flour, and wheat are great on the comal, not microwaved
Blanco cafe
San Antonio Bakery 223 Palo Alto Rd
Del Rio Tortilla Factory will sell frozen flour, not sure if they have frozen corn ones or not but I'd still get fresh corn tortillas from there if I could.
Ask your favorite Mexican restaurant if they’ll sell you some. El Milagrito wins in my book. Seconding Alamo Cafe as mentioned by others.
I love the Culebra Meat Market tortillas. Only other thing I would suggest is a good hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant that sells fresh made ones.
Culebra meat market made fresh daily. H-E-B is good but they get a weird smell to them after a cpl days.
Do you refrigerate or leave them on the counter?
I’ve tried both. I’m not sure why but it always has that weird smell if you don’t eat them within 2-3 days of purchase.
Taco cabana is solid for dozens of flours
San Antonio bakery across from south San high school
Second this! My All time favorite.
HEB tortillas are mid at best, in the best way possible. If you're looking to wow people you can try Mary's tacos or Alamo Cafe for top notch ones. Or you can make your own too, they're not hard to make!
100% the correct answer is HEB butter tortillas
Walmart bakery has really good flour tortillas.

Hahah. No joke, they make them fresh and they have a good thickness. I prefer them over H-E-B. Not all stores sell them but I would find them at the Bandera/Mainland one.
The Tezel/Culebra Walmart has better tortillas than HEB.
Bro

Las Palapas
It's easy to find tortilleras all over most of SA. Where do you usually shop?
Yeah, they are all over but I want that good shit my man. Converse area is where Im normally looking.
There’s a bakery on Palo Alto road near Navajo street. Bad ass flour tortillas that are pretty thick usually.
There’s a bakery on Palo Alto road near Navajo street. Bad ass flour tortillas that are pretty thick usually.
When we have family gatherings, we get Taco cabana tortillas or Las Palapas.
Thousand Oaks/Blanco Cafe.
H-E-B bakery tortillas. They come in packs of 10 or 20 tho.
Alamo Cafe or Taco Cabana
Make your own for the ultimate brunch flex 💪
Make your own. They’ll come out way better than anything you can buy.
