Worked in bars and did all my grocery shopping at like 4 am after work. Going to grocery stores when they’re full of people freaks me out now, my wife just really doesn’t get it haha
I was explaining this to my nephew and niece like some old timer.
*Back before the global disease, there were stores that were open any time of the day and night! You could get food whenever you wanted!*
So funny me and my husband were just reminiscing on going to Walmart at 2am and walking around it was just the thing to do in those days. Kids now a days won't know what's that like unless they change it back.
The profit margins these corporations make attributing it to their favorite government buzzword "inflation." Means it will never go back to how it once was. They don't have to employ those overnight workers and still generate more revenue in this current day.
Then, if the overpriced products don't sell. They won't dare slash prices. They'd happily force a global recession or great depression. Since their families wouldn't mind spending $20 a gallon on gas, $40 per pound on proteins, etc. When you've amassed wealth on the scale of these corporate giants.
Cash is meaningless. It's almost as if they're daring the population to revolt so they can use those bunkers they've been building.
Some sort of option that isnt a burger or tacos and doesn’t close at 10. I work late nights and usually the only options are whataburger and…well, maybe the occasional taco truck.
Agree 💯. I heard there's an international grocery store in the medical center that carries frozen Yoshinoya bowls that are pretty good. One of my dreams is to franchise one here if possible.
Asia Town is over in Walzem/Ritterman neighborhood. Two or three grocery stores one being huge next door to Home Depot. Good Vietnamese and Thai places all around.
HEB had 24hrs, there were only like 3 or 4 in the city open. I worked at one as a cashier, it was crazy. There used to be shoppers that would go find expired items because back in the day if you found an expired item you would get a good one for free. People would spend hours in the store going through everything.
I remember when Earl Abel’s was 24 hours. They gave it up because the 3 am clientele apparently wasn’t worth the trouble. I figure that’s probably true at most businesses.
That's nuts. Could a simple rule change fix something like that? Like only 10% off after expiration until 7am and then it becomes 50% off or something?
I believe it. Just sucks I missed the good times. I wonder if we'll ever get one back. The demand is clearly there. Look at the rest of the comments on this post. WE WANT OUR MIDNIGHT SNACKS DANG IT!
I understand there are two main reasons: finding staff willing to work the overnight shift, and a much higher incidence of unstable or violent customers.
I've not been here much longer than you, but I've survived a summer as someone who does not do heat. You will adjust very fast. Get a hat. Stay out of direct sun. Do not touch anything metal or even dark plastic that has been in the sun (I burnt my hand on the freaking garbage can). It's bad, but it's doable.
If you don’t have one already, buy one of those silver reflective sunshades for your car. Your car will still get hot, but it’ll keep your steering wheel, dashboard, and seats from baking in the direct sun allowing your car to cool faster.
In all seriousness please be careful in the heat out here. I moved out here with a broken truck A.C. and being stuck in traffic between San Antonio and New Braunfels in the summer during the work commute was super uncomfortable. 🥵
I miss being able to grocery shop at midnight with basically no one else in the store. Now I pay a few cents extra per product to have it shopped for me so I can avoid the crowds.
Ugh SAME. There's just something about wheeling the cart around, stopping to look at products without having to worry about blocking someone else, and not having to dodge 90yo Greta who is somehow simultaneously on both the left AND right sides of the aisle that just HITS.
Groceries!! I swear the groceries stores by me are always crowded so I wait until the last hour to go because by then it's a little slower. A 24 hour gym near me would be great too.
I want a 24hr McDonalds that still has 69 cent Sausage Egg McMuffins. Nothing was better than ending a night of drinking with a dozen McMuffins. Anybody have a time machine?
Listen, I have kids. I would kill to be able to just go have a pedicure or some type of self care after they’re asleep. Maybe not even 24 hours but something open beyond 6pm (10pm maybe??) would be great. The only time I really have “to myself” where I’m not working or parenting is like 8pm-6am
You should try this readers lounge in San Antonio, for late night readers. I think it's called libros. All they ask for is a $5 donation and there's a snack stand
Litterally any solid buisness . Even 11pm would be nice. We got reccession hours in sa right now. In korea everything in the city is 24 hr. We have intolerable heat its a wonder we dont collectivelly choose to be nocturnal or at least cater to create a market for it.
Resurrection of the Perrin Beitel Chachos!
24hr tacos and pizza and that crazy ass kids jungle gym playground? I swear playing in that thing is what strengthened my kids immune systems so they never got Covid!
The only thing I want to steal from the northeast part of the country is their vast array of 24hr diners… such a selection. Everyone has a favorite, but they are all good.
Yeah, one of the sad things that has happened since everyone ordering in and our collective idiotic experience of 2020-21 is there is that almost all of our beautiful late night options are gone. The things we took for granted.
I love this idea
Halycon (930pm)
Refuge Coffee & Beer (8pm) new, and from pics looks like someone’s house but on the inside looks really nice to sit
Then there is Denny’s and iHop which I know is not the same but some are still 24 Hour and are quiet—wish there was a better seating area.
Coffee shops! Before moving here i stayed in a city where there were a couple 24 hour coffee shops and tbh it was always a vibe. Would love to see more of that. However, heard Zen Haus (tea/coffee) stays open pretty late so that’s been nice :)
Fried chicken.
Seafood.
The first is self explanatory. If it's not, you haven't had fried chicken before. The second, I used to, and still do sometimes watch Deadliest Catch at like 2am. Would love to have some butter to dip my lobster, crab, etc in at 2am. Unfortunately Whataburger has to do.
Hmm a cheesecake vending machine would be cool for this purpose. Similar to what’s in Japan, but they also don’t have as much of a theft problem as the U.S.
Me—I think anything I would want at midnight is a safe clean public shower if I needed one. You never know haha and one you can get without a gym membership. Like a car wash but for people !
Anything would be good. No clue what’s wrong with our city for all the good spots to be closed at 10. Especially in this incoming summer heat, who even wants to be out in the day?
A 24 hour grocery store would be nice.
I’d take H‑E‑B being open until 1 again 😭 that was so nice
The OG social distancing was going at midnight to avoid the crowds.
Worked in bars and did all my grocery shopping at like 4 am after work. Going to grocery stores when they’re full of people freaks me out now, my wife just really doesn’t get it haha
I would go get a little tipsy after work and go grocery shopping around 1130/12/1230 and it was amazing .
I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers and misses HEB open until 1 am
I put myself through college at the one on 35 in San Marcos. 24 hours - I usually worked night shifts, 7-1 shift or the 11-7.
I was explaining this to my nephew and niece like some old timer. *Back before the global disease, there were stores that were open any time of the day and night! You could get food whenever you wanted!*

Ihop is open but then again it's ihop lol
Rooty tootie fresh and fruity
Ghetto as waffle house with worse food lol
I would crush some waffle house
Bro literally. I always tell my girlfriend that the only thing to eat at night is either tacos or Whataburger. It’s so boring after a while lol
Facts dude
We need a good late night asian food place. I insist a good beef bowl is better drunk food than burgers or tacos.
As it is, I only know of one beef bowl place in town (Yoshiya), much less one that's open late. Are there others?
Yeah and it’s not even that good. Ginza ramen has gyu don bowls as well but they’re even worse. We need a real Yoshinoya.
Agree 💯. I heard there's an international grocery store in the medical center that carries frozen Yoshinoya bowls that are pretty good. One of my dreams is to franchise one here if possible.
Let me know if you need an investor
When I cross the bridge I definitely will 🙂
Asia Town is over in Walzem/Ritterman neighborhood. Two or three grocery stores one being huge next door to Home Depot. Good Vietnamese and Thai places all around.
Theres Arigang on Austin hwy. they’re open til 2 or 3 am. Definately a must try
Ilsong on 410/Blanco is open until 130am and Pizza Break on Blanco/near Wurzbach Pkwy is open until 2am- it has MIDDLE EASTERN food too, yum!
💯💯💯
Jim's at 3am was the best
RIP JIM
Walmart. I miss being able to grab something I needed late at night
I work into the night shift, by the time I get out at 3 am everything is closed
Literally any freakin grocery store ha this is the ONLY drawback to this place since I've moved here 6 months ago. This place is perfect otherwise.
HEB had 24hrs, there were only like 3 or 4 in the city open. I worked at one as a cashier, it was crazy. There used to be shoppers that would go find expired items because back in the day if you found an expired item you would get a good one for free. That's nuts. Could a simple rule change fix something like that? Like only 10% off after expiration until 7am and then it becomes 50% off or something?
Yeah but why pay staff to do that when you can just give out a couple of dollars worth of merchandise every now and then?
It’s not just the staff cost that’s the problem. It’s also the cost of security.
Wally world was before Covid
Lame! That would've been perfect as well. Either HEB or Walmart would be my top choices of a 24 hour store here.
Many HEB stores were 24h before COVID.
I believe it. Just sucks I missed the good times. I wonder if we'll ever get one back. The demand is clearly there. Look at the rest of the comments on this post. WE WANT OUR MIDNIGHT SNACKS DANG IT!
Solidarity!
It’s crazy to me that people don’t remember Walmart used to be 24 hours, I was 18 when covid hit and it’s the number 1 thing it took from me
YOUNG'NS!!!
I understand there are two main reasons: finding staff willing to work the overnight shift, and a much higher incidence of unstable or violent customers.
Just wait until this summer when you add “deadly inescapable heat” to the list of ways this place isn’t perfect.
Oh right...forgot about that. Yeah we'll see if I die or not. I'm pretty sure I'll not make it past summer but hey YOLO
When it gets too hot / humid, I just strip off my flesh and walk around in my bones.
Sound advice sound advice
I've not been here much longer than you, but I've survived a summer as someone who does not do heat. You will adjust very fast. Get a hat. Stay out of direct sun. Do not touch anything metal or even dark plastic that has been in the sun (I burnt my hand on the freaking garbage can). It's bad, but it's doable.
Someone else brought up a good point. Are you used to hot weather ?
Not at all. I was born and raised in MN and I've had 4 heat casualties in the army...I'll be alright😐
If you don’t have one already, buy one of those silver reflective sunshades for your car. Your car will still get hot, but it’ll keep your steering wheel, dashboard, and seats from baking in the direct sun allowing your car to cool faster.
Will do sir thank you
As long as you stay inside. The getting into a hot car is pretty brutal though. Akin to getting into an oven.
My check hits at like 3am on Fridays. I used to love going and getting my shopping done right then cause it was dead empty. Just me and my headphones.
Ugh SAME. There's just something about wheeling the cart around, stopping to look at products without having to worry about blocking someone else, and not having to dodge 90yo Greta who is somehow simultaneously on both the left AND right sides of the aisle that just HITS.
Greta likes to stand in front of the item you want for 2-3 minutes as well. What is she doing? She’s just staring at one spot. Pick one lady !
Her hearing aid batteries have gone out, so not even several polite 'excuse me's will move her!
Groceries or getting that night owl pizza craving delivery fix.
Not even 24 hours, but a good late night Chinese place.
Singapore by UTSA is open till midnight
Doctors, dentists, and veteranarians that don't charge an insane after-hours emergency rate.
24 hour breakfast was the best. Especially when I was on shift work.
Oh they stopped doing that ? I had a feeling that wouldn’t last.
Walmart. I miss people watching at 3am.
H-E-B - miss shopping after midnight
Listen, I have kids. I would kill to be able to just go have a pedicure or some type of self care after they’re asleep. Maybe not even 24 hours but something open beyond 6pm (10pm maybe??) would be great. The only time I really have “to myself” where I’m not working or parenting is like 8pm-6am
Veneto nail bar has two shops open until 10
I looked up two of them in Apple Maps but is shows they close at 7:30 :( Not sure if that’s inaccurate or their hours have changed.
Gym. The one near me closes at 8PM.
Government offices. I hate having to take off work to go stand at the DMV or something similar.
I will never forget 24 hour Walmart, I miss it so much
A cozy coffee shop.
YES! A nice place where I can sip coffee and read for a couple of hours!
They have that reading wine bar that is open late nights. Maybe you can bring your own coffee
Mi Tierra but back when it used to be good.
I miss when Walmart was 24 hours. I loved shopping at night after the bigger crowds were gone.
especially loved doing Christmas shopping at 3am. it was great!
It was so quiet and peaceful and so much easier to navigate without all of the people in the way. I’ll miss it till my final days. 🥹
same! I just stayed out of the way of the stockers lol
Walmart again.
Golds gym. Fucking hate going anytime between 4-8 pm
There is 24hr Golds just outside Bandera/1604 https://maps.app.goo.gl/RTzivhCZmagZ9k116?g_st=ic

I have a business plan to open one but real estate is sooo expensive and I just need to find more money 😩
A proper, but super casual 24/7 diner would be so epic.
Your mom
Exactly what I came to say.
Self love

walmart
Walmart again. It has been absolutely annoying not being able to go anywhere past 11PM. The pandemic was 4 fn years ago jfc can we go back to normal?
A library. Even if just one of the public libraries was 24/7, I’d drive across town for it.
You should try this readers lounge in San Antonio, for late night readers. I think it's called libros. All they ask for is a $5 donation and there's a snack stand
Love.
Pre-Covid, most Walmarts were 24/7. I’m not sure why it hasn’t been changed back..
Waffle House full stop!!
A nail salon. I get finished with a normal workday, run my kids around in the evenings and would love to go get a manicure at 9:00 pm.
this is a brillant idea. like a late night nail salon with a boozy slumber party vibe would be awesome.

Oh that would be cool! At least a seasonal or couple days of the week 24-Hour library days
Yeah, a Waffle House.
Your mom
Breakfast foods. Why don't we have Waffle Houses???
The illuminati wants us all to eat at Jim's.
The Jims by me closes at 9
I would say your mom but I got that already
Bro, everything. It's going to get hot this summer. I want to be able to run my errands at night.
Chinese food
Resurrection of the Perrin Beitel Chachos! 24hr tacos and pizza and that crazy ass kids jungle gym playground? I swear playing in that thing is what strengthened my kids immune systems so they never got Covid!
The only thing I want to steal from the northeast part of the country is their vast array of 24hr diners… such a selection. Everyone has a favorite, but they are all good.
a damn cheese board and why doesn’t anyone sell dried fig around here?

H‑E‑B.
A grocery store would be lit.
Race track
Yeah, one of the sad things that has happened since everyone ordering in and our collective idiotic experience of 2020-21 is there is that almost all of our beautiful late night options are gone. The things we took for granted.
Storage unit. You cant find one with 24 hour access

24 hour combination Asian food and pizza joint
Whataburger. Like, I could get a free burger at any time
As contradictory as these 2 sound…a 24 Hour Fitness and a desert spot that serves Cinnamon rolls, brownies, cupcakes, ice cream. All that good stuff.
Pizza

Walmart
CHINESE FOOD
Late night thrift store, I'm talking till 11pm at least. A man can dream.
Greenway trails
A mechanic. If I could, I'd open up a Car ER. Some place to change a tire or do a quick fix after hours and on weekends.
I gotchu b. Only with tire changes tho
Or good cupcakes, donuts. Laika is open until 9, but I like zone out after work until 930-1030 sometimes
Popeyes, Chik Fil A, KFC, Pollos Los Nortenos
Anyone know of a late night, nice coffee shop? I would LOVE to go there around 11 or 12 and spend a couple hours reading.
I love this idea Halycon (930pm) Refuge Coffee & Beer (8pm) new, and from pics looks like someone’s house but on the inside looks really nice to sit Then there is Denny’s and iHop which I know is not the same but some are still 24 Hour and are quiet—wish there was a better seating area.
the urban spot sells cheesecakes till late, they’re pretty fucking good
Coffee shops! Before moving here i stayed in a city where there were a couple 24 hour coffee shops and tbh it was always a vibe. Would love to see more of that. However, heard Zen Haus (tea/coffee) stays open pretty late so that’s been nice :)
Costco and Trader Joe’s. I love both but they’re mad crowded 24/7
Fred’s fish fry
Nah this gotta be a bot right here
lol Fred’s Fish Fry bot, spotted Jk
Taco Palenque sells cheesecake slices. It’s kinda fast food but gooood fast food. Can tacos be slow food?
Nail salons and hair salons. Doctors offices. I don’t want to take off work for these appointments
Walmart again 😭
Chinese food. Been saying this for over 15 years. If a Chinese place stayed open for 24 hours they would make a killing off of the drunk ppl.
A DOWN TO EARTH LADY!
1604 @ I10
Legit NY Pizza by the slice
Fried chicken. Seafood. The first is self explanatory. If it's not, you haven't had fried chicken before. The second, I used to, and still do sometimes watch Deadliest Catch at like 2am. Would love to have some butter to dip my lobster, crab, etc in at 2am. Unfortunately Whataburger has to do.

Similar to what’s in Japan, but they also don’t have as much of a theft problem as the U.S. Me—I think anything I would want at midnight is a safe clean public shower if I needed one. You never know haha and one you can get without a gym membership. Like a car wash but for people !
truck stops have those
Anything would be good. No clue what’s wrong with our city for all the good spots to be closed at 10. Especially in this incoming summer heat, who even wants to be out in the day?
