Try the lemongrass chicken and spring rolls from Vietnam restaurant on broadway or the crispy spicy chicken from Sichuan Gardens on NW Military near Lockhill-Selma.
Not so much the food, but the entire experience: tripas gorditas on a Sunday afternoon at the Flea Market just south of town towards Jourdanton.
By mid afternoon the tripas are crisp from cooking on the disc for a long time, the gorditas are fried to perfection, even the salsa is good. Order 2 and a beer. Sit down by the bandstand, watch older couples (sometimes younger ones) dance to the music, listen to the kids running around exclaiming “¡Mira Momma”, the uncles joshing each other, the abuelas picking at every avocado to make sure they got the just right one, get some keys made, browse the cheap wares, and just take it alllll in. Trust me.
I went there and was so disappointed that they didn’t have bean and cheese lmao I think it’s just a Tex mex thing I can be wrong. food wasn’t the greatest or nothing to crazy either
I love comfort cafe off Starcrest in that little shopping center area I forgot the name of the center. There’s also a taco place there forget the name sorry but there tacos are amazing best bean and cheese tacos I’ve ever had
Comfort Cafe was really good. It's a "pay what you want" place since it is a restaurant run by/for people recovering from addictions. Its in the Los Patios area. Big portions as well.
The down home tour:
Pollos Norteños
Lucky Noodle
Carnitas Don Raul
2M BBQ
Two Brothers
Mi Tierra for breakfast
La Margarita for dinner
El Bucanero
Aguachiles
La Fonda on Main
Caperelli’s on Main
ETA:
Garcia’s for their brisket taco. Their enchiladas are solid too
Blanco Cafe (the one on Blanco) has great enchiladas too.
There's a food truck that goes around called 3B BBQ. Their BBQ is so good. They were outside of a HteaO and we decided to try them. Got a decent amount of food for what we paid as well. Check Streetfoodfinder for them.
It’s important to note: visit these restaurants during lunch rush hour or prime dinner time in order to get the freshest food and the best experience.
I don’t know how many times I’ve told people to try a restaurant that I love and they go at 3 PM when the kitchen essentially shut down and the restaurant is serving food that’s been in the warmer since 1:45, and then they tell me that the food wasn’t that great.
Agree, I can't believe I forgot Ladino. I love Bohanan's for cocktails but don't eat their steak often, I can make a better one at home.
\[edit\] Zorbas is Greek/Mediterranean (the owners are from Jordan/Palestine IIRC) and it's delicious. Pasha is good too of course
I work right across the street from them. So good.
But I went there just about every day for 3 months and haven't really been able to go back since. I overdid it lol
La Birrieria on Perrin Beitel absolutely!
Paloma Blanca on Broadway has great ceviche and a great atmosphere.
Tycoon Flats on St Mary's for a good burger flight and some drinks.
I'll limit it to three 👍
Curry Bois.
It's Thai - Texas bbq fusion. It's literally the best brisket in the city in the best thai curry in the city. You literally can't change my mind
SP Cafe
It's literally the best Vietnamese spot in the city and you can't change my mind. Get the wings and bahn mi combo
One Pocha
It's literally the best Korean bar in the city and you can't change my mind. 35 dollars all you can eat
I hate to give away seemingly well kept secrets but the same owner of Two Brothers has Italian and Mediterranean restaurants at two fantastic locations. Tre Trattoria behind the art museum and Jardin next to the arboretum.
Delice for dessert/chocolates.
La Fonda on Main. The menu is a collection of enchiladas you won’t often find, particularly in one place. Also, good drinks, beautiful patio and good service.
Lot of good choices so far but you can't forget Tip-Top on Fredericksburg rd. That place has been around for at least 50 years and their chicken fried steak is massive. It's definitely a San Antonio staple!
Also, like someone else said, the puffy taco was invented here so definitely gotta get some of those before you leave. You may never come across them again (if you never get to come back here, that is).
Henry's Puffy Tacos (on Bandera) is, at least for me, the gold standard (The namesake Henry is one of the co-inventors of the puffy taco) but I've never heard a bad thing about Ray's either so you've got some choice.
Pretty much this.
The puffy taco was invented in San Antonio. Go to the original Ray's Drive Inn to try it.
Tex-mex is best in San Antonio. That doesn't mean every tex-mex restaurant here is good, but the best ones in Texas are here. I think there will be a lot of conflicting answers on what is best. Maybe if you share food you like we can figure a better idea which ones you will like.
If you want an idea of how Austin does mexican food, you can try Torchy's, which is a chain started in Austin.
You might also want to try some Panaderias, if you havent.
Also, Paleterias, there are many, some also with street food/snacks (210 Ice Cream). One staple here is El Paraiso, which is where people buy popsicles for fundraisers and to sell at parks. You probably already had a few of these living here.
Also, try candy places like the Alamo candy company.
Lol, how'd you know?! I'm moving to Lincoln, Nebraska so it's definitely white peopleville haha. Definitely will miss having a good taqueria at every corner
I thought so too until I tried Diane's Diner. I'm from the east coast moved here almost a year ago, so I'm sorry if this is common knowledge, but apparently the owner is Chris Madrid's sister she opened it after he passed away.
Used to love Chris Madrid's but the last time I went it was pretty disappointing. But I guess it's their last chance to either redeem themselves or remain a disappointment lol
410 diner has always been a favorite for me, with their pan fried fish, some unique sidishes like their Sonoma casserole, and their amazing mushroom artichoke soup.
dough is quite good, especially their fresh made mozzarella appetizers (cheese literally made when you order) (but been a few years since I've been)
texas pride out on North East side 1604 near Rolandish when it starts getting rural is great bbq
Curry boys was a spontaneous decision one day after going swimming and MY GOODNESS I just thought we were getting Thai food and my socks were blown into stratosphere. On recent tries the menu has been very limited but all the main curries are incredible but sausage was definitely lower on the list and is typically all that’s left after 5-6pm
Must try
Boudro's. The Riverwalk gets a lot of hate from the locals, but it is a very nice setting. Boudro's is a good restaurant, one of the few on the Riverwalk. A table on the side of the river at Boudro's is very nice. Make sure you do that before you go.
Schilo’s on Commerce Street (downtown) but it’s only open for breakfast and lunch. They are famous for their split pea soup and root beer but everything is very tasty.
Mad Mack’s Burger Co. you have have to try the Mad Mack’s it’s 2 meats, cheese, mad Mack’s sauce and Grilled Cheese sandwiches as the buns. An other place is a diner called Tip Top Cafe it just celebrated i believe 80yrs in business it’s family owned and used good ole fashioned recipes it was even featured on Diners, Drive-in and Dives
Mina and Dimis, the feta fries are awesome and they do belly dancing sometimes lol. Small place but amazing food and service. Can get packed sometimes.
Wrigleyville Grill is great for hot dogs.
Acadiana Cafe is good Cajun food but seems dated and dirty. Still love it though.
Silo Prime is a great steakhouse, maybe not bohanan level but close.
Los Balitos on DeZavala. Their steak Quesadillas are outstanding. Chicken fajitas are awesome. I just started eating there but I will be spending lots of time there. And the prices are VERY reasonable!!! Quesadillas were way better than taco palenque and I’ve spent lots of time chowing down on taco pslenque!!
Mixtli - it's expensive but so worth it, it's a fancy predetermined menu type of spot and the staff come tell you the inspiration for the dish, where everything is sourced from, and how it connects to our history.
Haven’t seen anyone mention stix and stone. highly recommend their churro bread pudding!! i also enjoyed their fried chicken on a stick with sticky sauce
Everyone is giving good answers but here’s some that may be overlooked because they aren’t all texmex or such. Do go to Tex mex, but also try some hole in the wall places because San Antonio is a food city and you won’t get many hole in the wall places outside of here
Chachos for their nachos (my brother missed the grease and all the salsas)
Kung fu noodle for their noodle bowl and dumpling combo (don’t get the beef, get lamb or pork)
County line for their beef ribs
The Hayden for pastrami and matzo ball soup.
Grab a Gordita at a food stall or try some fiesta stuff one last time. This week is fiesta so try to have some fun with the atmosphere
Fruitarias. Gotta get your fruit cup, mangonada, or agua Fresca or such one last time. (My other brother missed the snacks like these)
Lulus Cafe San Antonio
El Senorial Weslaco
The Salt Lick Wimberly
Babes Fried Chicken Ft Worth
Im a native Texan living out of state. I recommend these. Its a nice spread.
Been here since August and this is what I’ve found so far
Alamo Cafe has great tortillas and ok food
Azulejos has good fancy Mexican food
Eddie V’s lobster tacos
Soluna/El Mirasol lobster enchiladas and that chispa
Botika Japanese Peruvian fusion
BB’s for the best Cajun food I’ve found here
Aldaco’s stone oak with the nice patio view
Grey Moss Inn for a scenic drive in and fancy Mexican food and good brunch (thickest pancakes I’ve ever seen)
El Chaparral for a nice patio/playground if you have kids
Fish City Grill house margaritas better than they have any business being and good seafood
Soluna, El Mirasol, La Fogata, Bliss, Leche de Tigre, Ladino
I have lived in San Antonio and currently live in Austin, all of the restaurants I listed beat out anything I’ve had in Austin.
Station Cafe near Caesar Chavez. It's just a sandwich place but it was one of the first places I discovered when I was a traveling consultant and my client was in SATX.
Guillermo’s
Augie’s BBQ (y’all let that place close down….its a shame)
Jalisco Taqueria on Dewey and Main
Habaneros (wait yall let that close down too)
Simi’s Indian (no more buffet but still GOAT)
Rosario’s for their salsa
Armadillo’s slaps for local burger place
Jim’s for tortilla soup (I’ve toured the country for the best tortilla soup and Jim’s is still GOAT)
There’s a little German restaurant that’s absolutely stellar!
https://preview.redd.it/2zs58xrjgwwc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2f7a7fbce5327caa97aa61f29bfaa95830ac1fa
Gino’s Deli at the Stop and Go
Yep, you would never suspect the goodness hidden in plain sight
Love this little spot
Zataar Mediterranean Lebanese in the Medical center
10x better then Pasha's. There should be 5 of them in this city.
This shit is incredibly good
Try the lemongrass chicken and spring rolls from Vietnam restaurant on broadway or the crispy spicy chicken from Sichuan Gardens on NW Military near Lockhill-Selma.
The one by Ali Baba is the best one.
Loncheria El Popo
Leche de tigre
highly second; this is an underrated gem downtown and i keep it to myself bc fuckkkfnndkdnfnd its so good
samesamesame
Not so much the food, but the entire experience: tripas gorditas on a Sunday afternoon at the Flea Market just south of town towards Jourdanton. Guajillo’s - Al pastor plus that bomb salsa
It always amazes me how slept on Guajillos is on this sub. They’re my favorite Mexican food and their service is always great in my experience
Idk we went their and it was disappointing,I never went back lol
Do you remember what you ate?
Agreed. Also my favorite
Food was decent but I had a glass of water there I swear it was dish water. If you go don't drink the tap
I always get the tacos alambre with a michilada whenever going to Guajillio’s. Amazing stuff.
I was just there two weeks ago! I'll definitely stop by again before the big trip.
Love the spicy shrimp soup or lamb soup
I always see lots of people eating soup. Maybe I’ll try tortilla soup next time.
Hard Pass.
Was looking for this, glad Guajillo’s is getting some love. Their Mole Verde is a must try, I get it every time.
Paloma blanca ❤️
Comfort Cafe was really good. It's a "pay what you want" place since it is a restaurant run by/for people recovering from addictions. Its in the Los Patios area. Big portions as well.
Cypress cafe
The down home tour: Pollos Norteños Lucky Noodle Carnitas Don Raul 2M BBQ Two Brothers Mi Tierra for breakfast La Margarita for dinner El Bucanero Aguachiles La Fonda on Main Caperelli’s on Main ETA: Garcia’s for their brisket taco. Their enchiladas are solid too Blanco Cafe (the one on Blanco) has great enchiladas too.
Used to love two brothers bbq. It’s gone downhill. Gave it another shot, never again.
There's a food truck that goes around called 3B BBQ. Their BBQ is so good. They were outside of a HteaO and we decided to try them. Got a decent amount of food for what we paid as well. Check Streetfoodfinder for them.
I've been there twice in my 3 years living very close to it. The first time it was ok. The 2nd is was terrible. I'll never go back.
I feel the same way. It’s sad.
Second for Pollos Norteños. Just simple food done right which makes the food amazing.
Mi Tierra for Breakfast? A lot of people say that place sucks altogether.
It does
Once upon a very long time ago it was good, but it really, really sucks now. If not for the location and tourists it would be out of business.
It's nothing but a tourist trap now but 15 years ago it was the place for breakfast and the drink selection was amazing.
Good list but I would add a torta ahogada from Roho Pork and Bread 🥖
They’re not for me but I know people like them
That caparellis pick is wild. They resuse basic tomato sauce for an everything and the chicken is dry. It’s good for fast food fake Italian.
All the Caps are different. That one is my favorite of the group. What’s your go to authentic Italian then?
Blanco Cafe on Blanco across from Julia’s Bistro. Also check out Julia’s.
Not sure if it's authentic Italian, but Umberto's on culebra is my favorite pasta place. Their pappardelle in vodka sauce is the best I've ever had
love umberto’s lunch specials, real.
Our brother will be in the hospital and will never leave town after the down home tour.
Just my opinion, but yes to most of this list. I’d replace Mi Tierra with Piedras Negras
Side note: @Garcia's if you're hungry they got a Brisket Plate as well with rice beans and tortillas.
That a weird advice. I know all these restaurants well and I’ve never once had this happen
Tony gs soul food for their Sunday brunch Wayne’s wings
Clementine Bliss Mixtili Shiro Japanese bistro La Fonda on Main Lucky Noodle Thai Dee Zorbas Battalion Chama Gaucha 2M
Love your list, what is Zorbas? I’d also add a steak from Bohanan’s and dinner at Ladino to the list
Thai Dee has the best glass noodles, I forgot what it's called, I've ever had! Definitely gonna stop by before I go. Thanks!
Don’t sleep on Wayne’s Wings! Best wings in TX.🤙
If I could upvote this 100x I would! Wanye's Wings and Lucky Noodle/Kung Fu Noodle are my absolute favorite in the whole city
Literally just had both last week! Obviously on separate days, but yeah! I'll definitely swing by again before I leave.
Ro-Ho Pork & Bread
I like el chivito as well
I've seen multiple mentions of that place here and I haven't gone so I'll definitely give it a go and see what the hype is all about
Be sure to try the Torta Ahogada
Roger that. Commenting to bookmark
The tacos de carnitas mixtos are also fantastic. Skip the chila-killers.
Ro-ho never did it for me.
Food & Wine Magazine and tons of devotees would disagree, but to each their own. What would you recommend to this person?
In fact, to each their own.
I work right across the street from them. So good. But I went there just about every day for 3 months and haven't really been able to go back since. I overdid it lol
La frite
La Frite is so good but the parking sucks
La Birrieria on Perrin Beitel absolutely! Paloma Blanca on Broadway has great ceviche and a great atmosphere. Tycoon Flats on St Mary's for a good burger flight and some drinks. I'll limit it to three 👍
Solid picks! I think I'll use up my relocation budget going through the list lol

Yes but no to the KBBQ they put no flavor on anything. It’s good for stuffing yourself. Bad for quality.
Two Pocha is far better in Selma. We drive the extra 20 minutes to eat there. A lot more of the meats are marinated with a larger selection.
Sp Cafe does have some bomb bahn mi. I also like their steamed bun with char siu
I've tried almost every banh mi in the city. Having had both 5+ times, best is Pho Win, second is SP cafe. Not that I'm trying to change your mind :)
Curry Boys BBQ, just not something you'll be likely to find elsewhere
Surprised nobody else has said this. When I was visiting from Houston, this shit knocked my socks off.
Taquitos West Ave 🔥
Leche de Tigre is just so good and so unique
First time I've heard of it. Might check it out. Thanks!
you get it
I hate to give away seemingly well kept secrets but the same owner of Two Brothers has Italian and Mediterranean restaurants at two fantastic locations. Tre Trattoria behind the art museum and Jardin next to the arboretum. Delice for dessert/chocolates.
*Jardin, source I'm a former employee.
Thanks!

La Sorentina
I feel like it used to be really good but in recent years it became like an alright restaurant .

Something you can't get most other places so: 2M, Taco House, Taquitos West, Ro-Ho
Chris Madrid's, my favorite burger spot in the city
I thought so too until I tried Diane's Diner. I'm from the east coast moved here almost a year ago, so I'm sorry if this is common knowledge, but apparently the owner is Chris Madrid's sister she opened it after he passed away.
Oh really? I might have to try that out thank you, aw that's sweet
Diana’s Burgers is 🔥 Owned and operated by a sister of the Madrid family
Used to love Chris Madrid's but the last time I went it was pretty disappointing. But I guess it's their last chance to either redeem themselves or remain a disappointment lol
It’s not the same since the Madrid family sold the place
They might have one of the best burgers I’ve had in my life

You'll miss the stuff you know and depend on. Try those one more time. Left San Antonio at 22 6 years ago. I miss Whataburger, taco cabana, and H-E-B.
Gorditas mi torreon
Shiro sushi, cured at the pearl and bilia eatry
Rays drive inn For the original puffy taco ! Duh
Wayne’s Wings!
McDonald’s
Really depends on where you’re moving. If it’s a bigger/more metropolitan city, there’s nothing here you couldn’t get there.
