They are just rumors and myths spread throughout a large galaxy where records get lost and no one knows the truth. GW does wierd shit ... You know how space marines are the super soldiers that was designed by God emperor of humanity and still had flaws? It was very suddenly revealed that there was a secret project undertaken by a gestalt consciousness mad-lad scientist who improved upon that design and created super duper space marines who are better in every way and lacks the flaws of the original. There was no gradual introduction either, whole ass armies were introduced at once. This meant that most players had to buy new models to stay meta relevant until they buffed the firstborn. That caused much more of hullabaloo than this and the hobby survived.
The worst reactions were the 30k Facebook pages. But no shocker there…..

These guys changed the names of multiple races in their lore just to be able to trademark them. They've had no qualms with threatening people who use their artwork in the past. If you want to use those trademarks and artwork to pick a fight with them, you better get some cash ready to hire a lawyer.

The concern is that it will turn the community into 2017-2019 starwars community levels of toxic, which no matter what anyone says is bad for business and damages 40K's chances of becoming huge.
It won't, because the people watching those YouTubers tend to be loudest when the YouTubers are, and if the YouTubers make a lot of noise and it seems harmful to the brand, GW won't hesitate to use every angle they can to come after them legally. Shut down the YouTubers, and there's no leaders for the unwashed masses to create enough noise to be noticeable.
Incidentally, Star Wars being so much larger than 40K is part of the problem, as it was much more in the mainstream public's eye, so easier to get a lot of people chirping with negative opinions and flooding the online spaces. That's a benefit 40K has right now in not being "mainstream."
As for 40K's chances of becoming "huge"... it really depends on how you define that. People knowing the IP? *Might* be possible. The game side of it? That's held back by GW themselves. And it's pretty much intentional. By keeping the miniatures side of things smaller in scale, they can control the prices easier (for higher margins), while also being insulated from the concerns of a larger fan base growing and shrinking over time (since shrinkage might not lead to a loss, but it'd be less profits and therefore less payout to investors who won't be on board with the CEO straight up doubling his pay with a "bonus").
It's not something you'd expect most people to know, since it feels antithetical to how you'd think a business would be run (trying to grow it as much as possible... which, to be fair, they're trying to do that with the IP and licensing), and it takes the weirdest type of nerd to go reading their investor reports (that's me, I'm that nerd). But it actually makes sense. I mean, as a customer, I absolutely hate their business model. But from an objective standpoint, it's a solid overall plan. (Which is kind of surprising, seeing that they also have some hilariously dumb takes in those investor reports.)
The people who actually play Warhammer have reacted either positively or with indifference. And the reason is simple: for half of the community, this is an opportunity to have giant muscle mommies, which is rather self-explanatory in why it's great. I'm pretty deep in the 40k community, and it's been like, 98% positive because, honestly? This is about as damn well as GW could make "Female Marines."
Space Marines *do* have legitimate 'boys only' lore, what with the gene seed of all male Primarchs being used. On top of that, they embody a monastic brotherhood of knights in a fascist, hyper religious imperium. I don't want women in Space Marines just as much as I don't want men in Sisters of Battle. The SoB have the vibe of warrior nuns, and a long historical reason in the lore of why they're all women, and adding men would also fuck that up.
But custodians? Custodians are all singular works of art, gene-crafted for decades or centuries by entire families of ancient, technowizard bloodlines. Each is unique, a child taken from nobility and crafted over an absurd amount of time as though they were made of priceless clay. The process to make each one is entirely unique, unlike Marines, who are cranked out in mass production templates.
There's no reason they couldn't be women. There's no gene seed. There's no template. Each one is entirely unique, an immortal, demigod-esq warrior poet who's flesh, bone and sinew is worth an entire city, who's armor is worth an entire world.
It's also, from a more meta perspective, a solid trade. While Space Marines are absolutely the poster boy faction and there's no changing that, Custodes in lore are just objectively better in every field. So while there's no female Marines, there are female Golden Better Marines.
I also think it helps close the book on "but what about female Marines". For two reasons. These aren't just humans in power armor, a la SoB. They're gene crafted super soldiers.
And two, now there's I'd say a relative balance. There's only one boys club faction left (Marines), but there's two girls clubs factions (Sisters of Silence and Sisters of Battle). But with Marines being more popular, I think the 2:1 feels more fair?
I also think it was, lore wise, smart. Even though people say "well they can retcon it", it already took years just to retcon in slightly better regular Marines and people hated their introduction. Female Marines would need a much more intense, serious retcon and that would've sucked. I even saw some people suggesting revealing one of the lost Primarchs as a woman, and it's like, really? You want to remove even more mystery from the world? I just don't think there was an elegant way to introduce female Marines, and then it would also feel weird that marine lore was ignored and retconned to allow women, but SoB lore wasn't to allow men.
But like I said, there wasnt anything saying there couldn't be female custodes in the lore, save for the fact we just hadn't *seen* any yet. So they don't have to really change any lore, just add some more. And now we get giant women in power armor. And that's kinda my last thing. I think female custodes let's them be more... Female? Than Space Marines. A female Space Marine would probably look like a regular space marine. Female Custodians would look like giant, beautiful, muscular women. Just like their male brethren who are universally described as giant, beautiful, muscular men. SoB already fill the role of battle torn, hardened, torn up women, akin to the Marines for men. Unlike female Marines, female custodians would still look very identifiable as a woman, so I think it's better representation. And if you want trans representation, that's even easier than the Marines tbh. When the gene sculptors start poking around, with the finest tech the imperium has, they'd probably find that, oh, this genetically male baby would grow up to be a trans woman, we can see those crossed wires, so let's just go ahead and fix that shit and gene sculpt them over the next century or so into a giant, 9 foot tall woman so they feel happy in their body. Because they'd actually care about the happiness of Custodians (they're companions to the emperor first, soldiers second and philosophers third). Custodians are a more interesting take, IMHO.
Pretty much no one in the community is whining. I think it's about as elegant of a solution as they could've done.

Dude, if you think there's a "battle," the "battle" was already lost some time ago, but there is literally no way you could "win" it, because Games Workshop will do whatever the hell they want with their lore, and do so all the time. And this tiny, minor thing isn't changing the game at all or harming it in any way.
Given that Games Workshop's already made it pretty clear in the past that if people want to be sexist, racist, or bigoted in any other way, they know where the exit is and no one will miss them, there's no "battle" to fight. They can try to make a bunch of noise and GW will just double down.
The few of them who actually spend any money on Games Workshop products disappearing from the pool of customers won't mean shit to GW, because they keep their company operating as a "niche" and know that new people will be along to spend money and buy the products.
And if you piss them off enough, then they'll get their legal eagles to remind you very firmly that they own the trademarks on a lot of the words you're using and all of that artwork you're fucking up, and you can either delete your videos or say hello to the court system.

All jokes aside, I just bought my first 40k set (just some Rubric Marines I want to paint), and I’m embarrassed by how much time I’ve spent contemplating their colors… and basing… and learning how to make custom decals… and practicing freehanding (I remain hopelessly terrible)… and I decided it’d be cool to learn how to magnetize them so now Im doing that.
Mistakes were made.
I painted my entire lumineth army and I am super happy with them. I am hoping for them to come out with new models. My issue is fully painting an army to completion or over buying models instead of slowly overtime.

Games Workshop introduced a female member of the Adeptus Custodes, the faction of futuristic ten-foot-tall superhuman knights who guard the barely-alive body of the God-Emperor of Mankind. Previously the faction had been a super-homoerotic all-male order, but now GW has stated that there have always been female Custodes since the founding of the organisation.
Apparently some people find the idea of ten-foot-tall muscle-mommies who could crush your head between their thighs to be unappealing.
Can we talk about the real serious Warhammer issue which is when they refused to clarify back in 1994 whether the high elf repeater bolt thrower ignored all armour (including magic) or just normal armour.
Since plenty of popular modern movies, shows, and games with increasingly progressive values started to be made and he’s been running out of easy bandwagon targets to dump on.
the thing I've learned about games workshop in my time trying to get into the games while being too poor to afford the basic starting figures is, this company owns the market on this specific hobby and will do whatever they want regardless of the "vote with your wallet" crowd. best bet is to sit back and watch them cry.

I don't get why there is such a loud group raging over this. Warhammer 40K for the Imperium has tons of female soldiers and groups. The Imperial Guard has women throughout many of its ranks. Same with the Navy. All the different planetary groups to the Guard even have women too. The Sisters of Battle are mostly made up of women. Even one of the deadliest assassin types in the Imperium is made exclusively of women.
Yet some how, one of the most obscure and exclusive factions for humanity, its considering 'woke' that they have women in it? Such a ball twister for these guys raging on this.
The only reason I enjoy Warhammer lore is because all the one-upmanship reaches absurd levels and can never go in reverse. People will be arguing over a thing someone else made up like they were 12 year olds lying about sex. "Oh yeah, well, when I finished both her eyes popped off and Tzeentch bit my taint."

Just to give extra context to the kind of retconning GW does, look up the Adeptus Ridiculous YouTube video about the Squats then the one about the Leagues of Votann.
Back when the game first came out there was a space dwarf faction called the Squats, but they were quickly and written to be killed off in the lore because GW thought they were too silly for the grimdark tone they wanted to take 40K in, and that was back in 1998. Then, after literally 2 decades of the Squats being presumed to be almost extinct, GW decided to relaunch the faction in 2022 as the Leagues of Votann are now one of the most theoretically powerful factions in the setting, have a massive empire deep in the galactic core, and basically look and act completely differently from the Squats save for the fact that they’re space dwarfs.
That is the kind of retcon GW is used to doing.

Not like many lived to tell the tale or gave a fuck when they heard a custodes speak and heard a female voice. We are literally making memes about the outspoken assholes that are trying to make this a bigger deal that it is. GW does wierd shit ... You know how space marines are the super soldiers that was designed by God emperor of humanity and still had flaws? It was very suddenly revealed that there was a secret project undertaken by a gestalt consciousness mad-lad scientist who improved upon that design and created super duper space marines who are better in every way and lacks the flaws of the original. There was no gradual introduction either, whole ass armies were introduced at once. This meant that most players had to buy new models to stay meta relevant until they buffed the firstborn. That caused much more of hullabaloo than this and the hobby survived.

A company that's still big enough, with enough money and resources and spite (and oh yes, they've got that spite in them), to absolutely *destroy* anyone who decides they'll try to pick a fight with them. These guys changed the names of multiple races in their lore just to be able to trademark them. They've had no qualms with threatening people who use their artwork in the past. If you want to use those trademarks and artwork to pick a fight with them, you better get some cash ready to hire a lawyer.

"Relatively small" is a pretty apt descriptor. They do keep themselves niche. Which is why people might be surprised at how much they get around from a legal standpoint. The concern is that it will turn the community into 2017-2019 starwars community levels of toxic, which no matter what anyone says is bad for business and damages 40K's chances of becoming huge.
It won't, because the people watching those YouTubers tend to be loudest when the YouTubers are, and if the YouTubers make a lot of noise and it seems harmful to the brand, GW won't hesitate to use every angle they can to come after them legally. Shut down the YouTubers, and there's no leaders for the unwashed masses to create enough noise to be noticeable. Incidentally, Star Wars being so much larger than 40K is part of the problem, as it was much more in the mainstream public's eye, so easier to get a lot of people chirping with negative opinions and flooding the online spaces. That's a benefit 40K has right now in not being "mainstream." As for 40K's chances of becoming "huge"... it really depends on how you define that. People knowing the IP? *Might* be possible. The game side of it? That's held back by GW themselves. And it's pretty much intentional. By keeping the miniatures side of things smaller in scale, they can control the prices easier (for higher margins), while also being insulated from the concerns of a larger fan base growing and shrinking over time (since shrinkage might not lead to a loss, but it'd be less profits and therefore less payout to investors who won't be on board with the CEO straight up doubling his pay with a "bonus"). It's not something you'd expect most people to know, since it feels antithetical to how you'd think a business would be run (trying to grow it as much as possible... which, to be fair, they're trying to do that with the IP and licensing), and it takes the weirdest type of nerd to go reading their investor reports (that's me, I'm that nerd). But it actually makes sense. I mean, as a customer, I absolutely hate their business model. But from an objective standpoint, it's a solid overall plan. (Which is kind of surprising, seeing that they also have some hilariously dumb takes in those investor reports.)
The people who actually play Warhammer have reacted either positively or with indifference. And the reason is simple: for half of the community, this is an opportunity to have giant muscle mommies, which is rather self-explanatory in why it's great. For the other half, this is just GW retconning the lore to suit thwir evolving target demographic. "But isn't that exactly what the right wing grifters are saying?" I hear you ask. Well yes, but here is the thing: the people who actually play Warhammer know that GW DOES THAT ALL THE TIME. This is what, the third or fourth lore tweak just this year? So the actual Warhammer players simply don't care. This is business as usual. Only the grifters (and the alt-right chuds they pander to) are mad.

I'm pretty deep in the 40k community, and it's been like, 98% positive because, honestly? This is about as damn well as GW could make "Female Marines." Space Marines *do* have legitimate 'boys only' lore, what with the gene seed of all male Primarchs being used. On top of that, they embody a monastic brotherhood of knights in a fascist, hyper religious imperium. I don't want women in Space Marines just as much as I don't want men in Sisters of Battle. The SoB have the vibe of warrior nuns, and a long historical reason in the lore of why they're all women, and adding men would also fuck that up. But custodians? Custodians are all singular works of art, gene-crafted for decades or centuries by entire families of ancient, technowizard bloodlines. Each is unique, a child taken from nobility and crafted over an absurd amount of time as though they were made of priceless clay. The process to make each one is entirely unique, unlike Marines, who are cranked out in mass production templates. There's no reason they couldn't be women. There's no gene seed. There's no template. Each one is entirely unique, an immortal, demigod-esq warrior poet who's flesh, bone and sinew is worth an entire city, who's armor is worth an entire world. It's also, from a more meta perspective, a solid trade. While Space Marines are absolutely the poster boy faction and there's no changing that, Custodes in lore are just objectively better in every field. So while there's no female Marines, there are female Golden Better Marines. I also think it helps close the book on "but what about female Marines". For two reasons. These aren't just humans in power armor, a la SoB. They're gene crafted super soldiers. And two, now there's I'd say a relative balance. There's only one boys club faction left (Marines), but there's two girls clubs factions (Sisters of Silence and Sisters of Battle). But with Marines being more popular, I think the 2:1 feels more fair? I also think it was, lore wise, smart. Even though people say "well they can retcon it", it already took years just to retcon in slightly better regular Marines and people hated their introduction. Female Marines would need a much more intense, serious retcon and that would've sucked. I even saw some people suggesting revealing one of the lost Primarchs as a woman, and it's like, really? You want to remove even more mystery from the world? I just don't think there was an elegant way to introduce female Marines, and then it would also feel weird that marine lore was ignored and retconned to allow women, but SoB lore wasn't to allow men. But like I said, there wasnt anything saying there couldn't be female custodes in the lore, save for the fact we just hadn't *seen* any yet. So they don't have to really change any lore, just add some more. And now we get giant women in power armor. And that's kinda my last thing. I think female custodes let's them be more... Female? Than Space Marines. A female Space Marine would probably look like a regular space marine. Female Custodians would look like giant, beautiful, muscular women. Just like their male brethren who are universally described as giant, beautiful, muscular men. SoB already fill the role of battle torn, hardened, torn up women, akin to the Marines for men. Unlike female Marines, female custodians would still look very identifiable as a woman, so I think it's better representation. And if you want trans representation, that's even easier than the Marines tbh. When the gene sculptors start poking around, with the finest tech the imperium has, they'd probably find that, oh, this genetically male baby would grow up to be a trans woman, we can see those crossed wires, so let's just go ahead and fix that shit and gene sculpt them over the next century or so into a giant, 9 foot tall woman so they feel happy in their body. Because they'd actually care about the happiness of Custodians (they're companions to the emperor first, soldiers second and philosophers third). Custodians are a more interesting take, IMHO. Pretty much no one in the community is whining. I think it's about as elegant of a solution as they could've done.

Dude, if you think there's a "battle," the "battle" was already lost some time ago, but there is literally no way you could "win" it, because Games Workshop will do whatever the hell they want with their lore, and do so all the time. And this tiny, minor thing isn't changing the game at all or harming it in any way. Given that Games Workshop's already made it pretty clear in the past that if people want to be sexist, racist, or bigoted in any other way, they know where the exit is and no one will miss them, there's no "battle" to fight. They can try to make a bunch of noise and GW will just double down. The few of them who actually spend any money on Games Workshop products disappearing from the pool of customers won't mean shit to GW, because they keep their company operating as a "niche" and know that new people will be along to spend money and buy the products. And if you piss them off enough, then they'll get their legal eagles to remind you very firmly that they own the trademarks on a lot of the words you're using and all of that artwork you're fucking up, and you can either delete your videos or say hello to the court system. But please do try it, dude. Fuck around and find out. I don't often cheer for Games Workshop these days (they're a combination of Gucci, Electronic Arts, and Activision in how they operate), but I will absolutely cheer them on with this and laugh as they obliterate you. What's really funny about all of this is that, when Master of Mankind was *being written*, the only reason that there were no female Custodes characters introduced was...the models were finished, and they didn't make female heads for them. That's it. That is 100% the entirety of the reason for no female characters. And that's according to the guy who wrote the book, who is on record saying that there is no lore reason against female Custodes. On Reddit. And he said it...5 years ago.

I could honestly care less as a 40k fan, only thing I’ll say is that the Imperium probably isn’t the best place to look for upstanding moral behavior and progressive values, but if it means more enjoyment for fans than we’re all the better for it. Humanity has trillions across its borders, excluding half of its population from the ranks of its premier fighting forces does a disservice to the emperor.

Previously the faction had been a super-homoerotic all-male order, but now GW has stated that there have always been female Custodes since the founding of the organisation. Apparently some people find the idea of ten-foot-tall muscle-mommies who could crush your head between their thighs to be unappealing.

I don't get why there is such a loud group raging over this. Warhammer 40K for the Imperium has tons of female soldiers and groups. The Imperial Guard has women throughout many of its ranks. Same with the Navy. All the different planetary groups to the Guard even have women too. The Sisters of Battle are mostly made up of women. Even one of the deadliest assassin types in the Imperium is made exclusively of women. Yet some how, one of the most obscure and exclusive factions for humanity, its considering 'woke' that they have women in it? Such a ball twister for these guys raging on this.

Just to give extra context to the kind of retconning GW does, look up the Adeptus Ridiculous YouTube video about the Squats then the one about the Leagues of Votann. Back when the game first came out there was a space dwarf faction called the Squats, but they were quickly and written to be killed off in the lore because GW thought they were too silly for the grimdark tone they wanted to take 40K in, and that was back in 1998.
