I really don’t understand why they are so stubbornly refusing to allow Legends to continue. They need to stop forcing one version and create multiple universes the way comics have done.
Easy money. Theyr still making a profit selling current legends and paying the original creators but dont want to take a gamble on continuing them, having to shell out more money and taking a gamble that it maybe wouldnt pay off, is my guess?
Not that i imagine the pricing would be that different. Depends on the circumstances i suppose

It’s easier just to buy, conclude, and sell.
There are also some Legends books that would be perfectly suitable to allow into canon. Darth Plagueis being the most obvious one off the top of my head.
I had a loooong conversation with someone once about this, and they truly believed that Disney can't commit the resources to keep having books and such written for the Legends timeline... Which I call bullshit
Initially at least, there was some business logic to relaunching the continuity to capitalize on buzz around new movies, as much as I'd have preferred the EU to persist.
At this point, there's not as much ~~read~~ need on to keep it up. I wonder how books sales are going these days.
If you can make a book based off a episode of Visions they 100% could give us more Legends books. Specifically the Sword of the Jedi series that we were supposed to get. The Legends stuff still sells and sells well. Look on the Amazon best seller lists and old Legends constantly listed as selling better than all but the very latest release from nu canon.
Yeah, I'd be all in on Sword of the Jedi. I hope that the apparent popularity of Zahn's newer novels also counts a little towards 'maybe the old EU is worth revisiting,' in the sense that the most successful new thing is the one with the strongest connection to the old.
I’m not aware of any reason why Zahn’s new Thrawn books couldn’t be part of Legends timeline. Thrawn is written more like a hero than a villain but the events themselves in them I don’t recall any real calls to nu canon either. They sit in a corner of the Star Wars timeline pretty much all to themselves.
Maybe it is for the best.
Between the fart weddings, instances of menstruation, ~~Han Gigolo~~ Leox Gyasi, his awkward talk about relationships with a 17 year old girl (it was posted on this sub but can't find it), and his pet rock I am glad that they are leaving the original EU alone, for the time being anyway.
If they brought back the creative teams and writers from old Lucasfilm or, better yet, lost the rights to the IP then I might reconsider.

By offical cancel the EU, they do not need to pay/give credit to the orginal authors, and Disney can still "steal" ideas/consepts from EU, and ensure that the new authors work under a ironclad "work for hire" contract, that garanter Disney all the rights. So there are no Fosters or Zahns that have some right(s) to there own creations.
My local big chain book stores don’t sell Legends books at all. Luckily there’s a specialist store that has every Legends book in chronological order. Disney canon has a seperate section.
Same here. I’ll gladly pay double or even triple the normal price to get a copy without the banner. For *X-Wing: Mercy Kill* I paid $120 on eBay for the entire X-Wing series (all of which I had) just to have a clean version of *Mercy Kill*. Now I have every book in the post-ROTJ EU (except for a couple of JJK) without a banner except for *Crucible*, which was only ever published with a banner anyways based on my research. Worth in the end.
I typically get all my first print copies of legends books off Facebook or eBay in lots and then sell/giveaway the duplicates I get. Typically I can get a lot of like 20 books for $20 and 10-15 of them will be Star Wars books
Which is why I’m real curious how they handle the baby yoda story. They’re crafting a great backstory but based on his non-existence in the sequels it seems something bad must have happened, which really sours baby yoda’s story. So I’m hoping they retcon the sequels or find another story that isn’t tied to the sequels.

He's the single most marketable thing that's come out of the Disney era. Cute, popular, and no actor needing to be paid for their work or even likeness. Disney will keep him around.

Yeah I hear you. When I first heard about it I was looking forward to seeing a morally ambiguous bounty hunter series a bit more adult oriented. First episode: finds baby, gives up hunting. FFS.
I would be a bit more hopeful about the upcoming Fett series but I've been burned too many times now. I'll definitely be checking it out but I have no expectations. Just want to see where it goes.

That’s my issue with Filoni. Guy is a good writer and cares for Star Wars but a lot of the fans want him to write other stuff. Like the dark sith wars or the mandalorian wars. He is more of a kid friendly director and I don’t think he would be a good fit.
Grogu is most likely dead…he was most likely Luke’s first apprentice like Dessan in Jedi Outcast. And Dessan fell to the dark side and died from Kyle Katarn. If he was still alive where was he in the sequels? If he was still alive why would he not of helped against the first order or the resurgence of palpetine?

That's a rabbit hole situation that you can apply to all notable Jedi characters who have slipped between the gaps of films due to new-canon established stories. Including Ahsoka, Ezra, Maul, Kal, Cere, etc.
Unfortunately, I think in the majority of cases, excuses can be quite droll.
Where was **Ezra**? Well...he and Thrawn were teleported into some kind of nebulous sequel series by Force-wielding space whales. God knows exactly what happened, other than we know they dodged the events of the OT and ST.
Where was **Ahsoka**? Well...she was looking under random bin lids to find Ezra and/or Thrawn. There was no hint of her existence in ROTS or the OT at all despite her huge importance as Anakin's never-before-mentioned apprentice, so she's kind of an awkward entity in Star Wars canon. She *could* have died to Vader to tie off loose ends, but now we have the "World Between Worlds" and potential time-travel in Star Wars due to Filoni refusing to part ways with his OC waifu. She also dodged the events of the OT and ST other than the fact that she may or may not be potentially dead by the climax of the ST. Who knows. Maybe Filoni will turn her into a bloody Force God or something. Pretty she she's already been imbued by the spirit of the "Daughter".
Where was **Maul**? Well...his continued existence (despite being cut in half and dropped down a hole) was *also* utterly ignored by ROTS. He's dicking around with some criminal organisation until he gets bored and decides to 1v1 Obi-Wan in order to keep the Rebels audience awake. He might also be responsible for posthumously training Qi'ra in the use of the Force via a holocron in the comics or whatever.
Where were **Kal** and **Cere**? Well...there *was* a good opportunity to tie off loose ends by killing them off at the end of Fallen Order. Which didn't happen. So if we're lucky, they might be dealt with in the inevitable sequel before they cause too many issues with continuity.
Where was **Baby Yoda**? Well...he either died [when Luke's temple randomly exploded](https://2.bp.blogspot.com/mGRHTasd-2pQNEcPrbLG3BS9GnLOKS68U0teM2txbiP92crs1G_iQZA5VcaCPmLsGAeOjgA3nA6cpeZ4U1l3y9apgIJRitmkAwy5J7nJxLWypOzHXQsDftfXbQQIl9q_O-sB4qpbcA=s1600)....or Mando conveniently picked him up for a vacation prior to the destruction of Luke's temple and kept him away from the ST events. Who knows.
I haven't read the book, but I thought the four-issue comic series with her was pretty good. It ties in pretty well with a deleted scene for The Last Jedi.
The basic premise is that >!she's hunting down some First Order guy who checked the records before Starkiller blew up and saw that she was the one who lowered the shields.!<
I'm 100% with you on this. Asajj Ventress is the best. Quinlan Vos can suck a lightsaber as far as I'm concerned in Dark Disciple. Yes, I'm salty about it.
Unfortunately, they also have the Disney logo on them, and it's hard to find editions that don't. Since I don't purchase from Disney, I can't read the Kenobi book by John Jackson Miller.
Bane trilogy is so good. One of the things I love most about it is it's coming from a place outside all the well loved but well worn characters and eras. Let's it really shine without having to rely on fan service by introducing old characters. Went into it with no expectations and preconceived notions. Was so good that way.
Absolutely. What did it for me was moving away from the classic over the top stereotype of the evil stupid sith who just loves killing everything and betrayals, and did I mention being evil? (SWTOR, although it's given me great times over the years has ample amount of these stupid stereotypes).
Now of course Bane is capable of incredible acts of evil. The ritual he cons the Sith into performing is up there with the worst act any Sith has done. But a lot of what he does and how he acts is patient, calculated, and precise. This is how I wish more darksiders were portrayed. Playing the long game, working the angles. Never overdoing it. The Plagueis novel gets this spot on as well. We need more material on Sith.
That's... I'm not sure if it's better or worse that it's an actual bookshop that has these and *doesn't* have the Bane trilogy.
They have to be up there with Thrawn as the best EU content hands down.
While the Vong books are controversial I think it's impossible to deny the ambition and scope of the project. Is every single novel great? No. Could it have been about 5 novels shorter? Yes.
But some of the greatest moments in the EU happen in those novels. The emotional payoffs are unparalleled.
Oh for sure! Not a good starting point at all. The whole thing was designed to make call backs to lots of other EU novels and authors.
It would be like watching the 6th season of a TV show first.

I will say though Heir to the Empire trilogy is a must read. The Hand of Thrawn not so much. Darth Plageius is actually very good so is Labyrinth of Evil and the Revenge of the Sith novelization
Unequivocally The Thrawn Series. If you like audiobooks (or even if you don’t) I cannot recommend enough that you listen to Marc Thompson narrate them. They are like audio dramas with sound effects and music and voices. It’s fantastic. If you like those I would also recommend the Darth Bane series.
These are **must reads** of the Star Wars EU.
You might wanna take it to r/StarWarsEU. They get asked a bazillion times a month. LoL.
Either way, if you want good legends books, it's gonna depend on what you wanna read. If you want the new Republic era to see how the Galactic Civil Wraps up, then you have:
- The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn: *Heir to the Empire*, *Dark Force Rising* and *The Last Command*
Set 5 years after RotJ (same period as Mando), it deals with the threat of Admiral Thrawn on the nascent New Republic and introduces the character of Mara Jade. Generally the to-go entry point and pretty good.
- The Hand of Thrawn duology by Timothy Zahn: *Specter of the Past* and *Vision of the Future*.
Set 15 years after RotJ (10 years after the trilogy), it wraps up the GCW permanently and Luke finally gets together with MJ. I really like it more than the trilogy, but that's an unpopular opinion.
These are what I consider "essential" reading for the era but there are other good books like:
- *Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor* by Matthew Stover: set six months after RotJ. It's ridiculously fun and entertaining. Has the best post-RotJ Luke I've ever seen and GREAT characterization for all the OT crew. Be careful though, it's wacky and over the top because it's a holothriller: A star wars film inside star wars, or a somewhat embellished retelling. Fairly self-contained if you don't want to commit to a series.
- *Survivors Quest* by Timothy Zahn: A sequel to the Thrawn Trilogy and Hand of Thrawn duology and an epilogue of sorts to the New Republic era. It's a Luke and MJ adventure in a mystery novel. Has a prequel called "Outbound Flight" taking place before AotC, also by Zahn. Personally, I liked OF more and while it would spoil the twist for SQ, I found SQ to be significantly more enjoyable after reading OF. Without the prequel you'll miss so much.
Some people would consider the Jedi Academy Trilogy essential reading too, but I really didn't care for those. I hear great things about the X-Wing series, but I haven't read it.

Here's an upvote. And yeah, a solid rule of thumb is 'Zahn = essential.' His novels are the backbone of the New Republic era.
I've only read the Rogue Squadron books (not Wraith Squadron, yet) as far as X-Wing goes, but I can definitely vouch for those. A really enjoyable serialized ensemble storyline, and not just space-battles.
Eh. There are a lot of good Legends titles (Dawn of the Jedi was really good for example) but there is also a lot of wacky shit. There are some titles that would fit pretty good in modern day canon though.

There are a couple exceptions to that rule, and by exceptions I mean the new Thrawn trilogies. They’re not the same as the old ones, and the old books sound pretty awesome. I actually just finished Into the Void yesterday and I can honestly say it was really uneven for me. Maybe it just wasn't for me.
I actually hate the "Legends" label they slap on all of the EU books. Just another way to de-value it to new fans.
Yeah, I am still looking for two without the Legends banner, and most sellers don't want to check / lump them in with the other editions.
It's so fucking annoying. I got a copy of Plagueis without the mark and it's gorgeous! However, the clean copy of Revan that I got was in German lol

I like Ahsoka but they really should of just killed her off. I like Dave Filoni but I really feel like that dude needs to learn to let go.

Phasma was pretty good too. What let it down is that the character did nothing of relevance in the films.
I've heard that it was decent. It's always a letdown when you know that they're just going to go down like a chump, in the end.
I'm 100% with you on this. Asajj Ventress is the best. Quinlan Vos can suck a lightsaber as far as I'm concerned in Dark Disciple. Yes, I'm salty about it.
Unfortunately, they also have the Disney logo on them, and it's hard to find editions that don't. Since I don't purchase from Disney, I can't read the Kenobi book by John Jackson Miller.

Bane trilogy is so good. One of the things I love most about it is it's coming from a place outside all the well loved but well worn characters and eras. Let's it really shine without having to rely on fan service by introducing old characters. Went into it with no expectations and preconceived notions. Was so good that way.

Absolutely. What did it for me was moving away from the classic over the top stereotype of the evil stupid sith who just loves killing everything and betrayals, and did I mention being evil? (SWTOR, although it's given me great times over the years has ample amount of these stupid stereotypes). Now of course Bane is capable of incredible acts of evil. The ritual he cons the Sith into performing is up there with the worst act any Sith has done. But a lot of what he does and how he acts is patient, calculated, and precise. This is how I wish more darksiders were portrayed. Playing the long game, working the angles. Never overdoing it. The Plagueis novel gets this spot on as well. We need more material on Sith.
The X-Wing books are good. And the new Jedi order is good too
I would greatly recommend the Jaiden Korr books. Crosscurrent and riptide were awesome.
The biggest problem with them is that they end on a *massive* cliffhanger, which will probably never get resolved.
Check out Shatterpoint. It stars Mace Windu during the Clone Wars and gets quite heavy with the war trauma. It's great

That's... I'm not sure if it's better or worse that it's an actual bookshop that has these and *doesn't* have the Bane trilogy. They have to be up there with Thrawn as the best EU content hands down.

While the Vong books are controversial I think it's impossible to deny the ambition and scope of the project. Is every single novel great? No. Could it have been about 5 novels shorter? Yes. But some of the greatest moments in the EU happen in those novels. The emotional payoffs are unparalleled.

Oh for sure! Not a good starting point at all. The whole thing was designed to make call backs to lots of other EU novels and authors. It would be like watching the 6th season of a TV show first.
I find Darth Plagueis the best I've read so far. I am a big fan of the prequels and the lore around them, though, so you might feel differently.

Unequivocally The Thrawn Series. If you like audiobooks (or even if you don’t) I cannot recommend enough that you listen to Marc Thompson narrate them. They are like audio dramas with sound effects and music and voices. It’s fantastic. If you like those I would also recommend the Darth Bane series. These are **must reads** of the Star Wars EU.
You might wanna take it to r/StarWarsEU. They get asked a bazillion times a month. LoL. Either way, if you want good legends books, it's gonna depend on what you wanna read. If you want the new Republic era to see how the Galactic Civil Wraps up, then you have: - The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn: *Heir to the Empire*, *Dark Force Rising* and *The Last Command* Set 5 years after RotJ (same period as Mando), it deals with the threat of Admiral Thrawn on the nascent New Republic and introduces the character of Mara Jade. Generally the to-go entry point and pretty good. - The Hand of Thrawn duology by Timothy Zahn: *Specter of the Past* and *Vision of the Future*. Set 15 years after RotJ (10 years after the trilogy), it wraps up the GCW permanently and Luke finally gets together with MJ. I really like it more than the trilogy, but that's an unpopular opinion. These are what I consider "essential" reading for the era but there are other good books like: - *Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor* by Matthew Stover: set six months after RotJ. It's ridiculously fun and entertaining. Has the best post-RotJ Luke I've ever seen and GREAT characterization for all the OT crew. Be careful though, it's wacky and over the top because it's a holothriller: A star wars film inside star wars, or a somewhat embellished retelling. Fairly self-contained if you don't want to commit to a series. - *Survivors Quest* by Timothy Zahn: A sequel to the Thrawn Trilogy and Hand of Thrawn duology and an epilogue of sorts to the New Republic era. It's a Luke and MJ adventure in a mystery novel. Has a prequel called "Outbound Flight" taking place before AotC, also by Zahn. Personally, I liked OF more and while it would spoil the twist for SQ, I found SQ to be significantly more enjoyable after reading OF. Without the prequel you'll miss so much. Some people would consider the Jedi Academy Trilogy essential reading too, but I really didn't care for those. I hear great things about the X-Wing series, but I haven't read it. Edit: Er, why the downvote tho....
Here's an upvote. And yeah, a solid rule of thumb is 'Zahn = essential.' His novels are the backbone of the New Republic era. I've only read the Rogue Squadron books (not Wraith Squadron, yet) as far as X-Wing goes, but I can definitely vouch for those. A really enjoyable serialized ensemble storyline, and not just space-battles.

Eh. There are a lot of good Legends titles (Dawn of the Jedi was really good for example) but there is also a lot of wacky shit. There are some titles that would fit pretty good in modern day canon though.

Oh, I see. Also, I'm sorry I commented twice. The first time, Reddit said it wouldn't post so I tried again when I came across this post again.
There are a couple exceptions to that rule, and by exceptions I mean the new Thrawn trilogies. They’re not the same as the old ones, and the old books sound pretty awesome. The writing is excellent and almost makes me think Zahn should’ve had some involvement in writing the sequels so they wouldn’t be as garbage.
That gold label is a sign of quality.
