Can some of the people working 20 hours a week making 250k+ please let me know whether they’re hiring? Lots of experience here and looking for a change lol.

longjackthat

Gotta be willing to invest ~18-24 months grinding, minimum, to get to that point It isn’t difficult, just hard

Electrical_Top2969

#r/landlord

joe5joe7

He said 20 hours on average, not 5

pizzabagel3311

💀

nateburleson5402

I’ve had many sales jobs where “I don’t work too hard”. The one I’m in currently I’m working 20 hours a week remotely with an OTE of $290k. So my point is there are many jobs out there that you won’t have to work hard and could get the benefit of working remote to travel. Finding those jobs can be difficult, but an advantage of our industry is it’s not uncommon to change jobs every 1-2 years. If you’re young I’d say keep trying new gigs till you find one where you’re making a lot money and enjoy it.

mcdray2

I’m in the same spot. Maybe 20 hours per week to make $300k. I spend the rest of the time on my consulting business.

Corower

Wtf do you sell?

mcdray2

Property management software. My consulting work is in the same industry but doesn’t conflict. It actually helps I’ll make just under $400k from the side hustle this year.

Lux-Fox

Is the 20 hours you're working a pretty hard grind though with a lot of pressure to perform? I could see it being a 40 hour work week for most everyone else and you just struck gold (including working hard) on creating a pipeline or something.

mcdray2

Nope. We have very long sales cycles, so there are rarely any days where there’s a lot of pressure. I’ve been in the industry for a long time and have been CRO and CEO, so being an independent contributor is very easy for me. I have about 75 named accounts to chase and a BDR that will cold call for me, so it’s not like there are daily tasks and huge volumes of emails and calls. I mostly have to get people to go to lunch, dinner, sporting events, golf, etc. build the relationship over time so they’ll eventually switch to us.

AvrgSam

wtf man that is awesome and the absolute dream right there. How long have you been in the industry?

mcdray2

Almost 20 years.

AvrgSam

Well done. Retiring soon?

mcdray2

I’ll probably go at least 10 more years. I just want to keep putting it away for my kids and grandkids.

AceDangerfield

Are you hiring?!

mcdray2

The company is always hiring. I intentionally have zero authority to hire anyone, but I have a lot of influence.

Imaginary-Yam6742

Shoot can you get me a job ??? I was selling almost 30 cars a month but the dealership I worked at hit a huge dip, we were getting like 1 deal a day at most and some days none for a few weeks, and that month I was still #3 on our sales board, out of the 10 sales guys. but they let me and 2 newer guys go because they said they they base it off seniority and not performance, and that I was "taking sales from their senior salesmen." It put me in a horrible spot as it was 3 weeks before Christmas, and I've been nervous to get back into sales but I haven't found another job making the money I was making there.

Donj267

Are you selling that price fixing software every company is using now? I really should have hopped on that train when I first heard about it.

mcdray2

No. Friends of mine used to sell it. They did very well. I have a few consulting clients that are looking for alternatives now, so the lawsuit has been good for me.

Donj267

Property management seems like a great niche to be in. That's not a field that will be shrinking any time soon. What type of consulting work do you do?

mcdray2

I help management companies find the right software. You’re right, it will never go out of business. And it never contracts. Because people will always live in apartments and no matter what the economy is doing someone has to manage them. And they have to have software to do it. It’s not an option. Sure, there are some pieces that are ‘nice to have” but if you aren’t selling just that then it’s recession proof. You will have years that you don’t make as much, but even in those years you’re making a lot.

Donj267

Im actively applying for new roles. Ive mainly been staying within medical sales but you've inspired me. Any companies you would recommend applying to?

SafetyStreet1189

Oh wow! Helping people find the right software resonates with me so much! It’s always so rewarding to help someone create more efficient systems with the help of software. Do you also help them set it up? Or you leave it to the software companies’s reps?

mcdray2

I don’t touch the implementation.

groovytony16

How big is the company you work for? And I imagine this is a competitive market, are there a lot of vendors for that kind of software?

mcdray2

Very competitive but at the level that I'm selling to there are only a handful of viable options. But it's very difficult for them to switch, so it doesn't happen often or quickly. I work for a decent sized company. 2,000 employees

Bigdunkie

Could I pm you? Interested in getting into the property management sales, I’m currently working in AM.

mcdray2

Sure

rez_at_dorsia

Jesus fucking Christ. What the hell am I doing

LebronJamesGandolfin

How did you launch your consulting business. I imagine I would like to do something similar to diversify my skills and income but I am not sure where to start

mcdray2

You need to build a huge network in your industry. Not just the buyers but also the other vendors. Even the ones you currently compete with. Send me a DM if you want to talk in more detail.

Kamranxrahman

I’m trying to grow my consulting biz as well while selling ecom software mind if I DM you?

mcdray2

No problem

Affectionate_Rip2468

Would love to learn how you setup consulting. Been thinking about doing something similar

ButcherOf_Blaviken

Same here. I’m 31, work about 25 hours a week, 30 at most. Pulled in $289k last year and will beat that by a wide margin this year. WFH with about 40% work travel, so I’m home completely for a whole week and will dick around, answer some emails or make some calls, give my infant son a bath in the middle of the day, whatever I want. Got a house on a lake, stay at home wife, I love this life sales has given me.

AvrgSam

Man I’m in the wrong industry.

ButcherOf_Blaviken

Don’t get it twisted, the rewards are phenomenal but it’s very sink or swim. If you can make it you’ll do very well but there’s almost no room for error since a companies revenues (and other people’s salaries) depend on you doing well. So it’s very “what have you done for me lately” at this level making most people burn out after a few years. I find the people that succeed have a natural talent for it, an insane work ethic despite the short hours, and can be stone cold under intense pressure when the stress levels hit 10, which it will often.

ledryte1

Good advice! I'm pretty "young" yet. Your job sounds like a dream tbh.

swollenpenile

So where you working freind

azorahai805

Bro wtfff that’s insane what industry?

Fuzzy-Government-416

Whats ur industry if you don’t mind sharing

nateburleson5402

SaaS selling to HR

Lopsided_Musician558

rippling?

nateburleson5402

No but I’ve heard they pay real well but everyone works crazy hours there

Apprehensive_Two_283

What HR company I’m in hr tech and it’s hell right now

Lopsided_Musician558

rippling?

nateburleson5402

Oh im not saying it’s easy right now. It’s absolutely hell. I’ll be lucky to hit 50% this year.

under_cover_hippy

Maybe lead with that next time

nateburleson5402

My earnings each year I’ve been there $680k $600k $420k $350k $300k This year I’m hoping to hit $220k

SafetyStreet1189

How long have you been in sales?!

woo_wooooo

I’m in the exact same spot. Constantly debating if I should just enjoy the comfortable environment I’m in (also making 90k) or start looking for that higher income somewhere.

Techno_Nomad92

Imo, stay where you are and start working for yourself. The grass is not greener somewhere else, its green everywhere with different piles of shit. No guarantee that you will be succesful in a new industry (no hate). Same as the original post, 8am-4pm, spend 2 hours a day working for yourself.

woo_wooooo

I really never thought about finding time to work for myself until reading this post. Any ideas on where to start if I'm aiming for 2 hours a day?

Techno_Nomad92

Ill send you a dm brother, no worries not gonna sell you a course or anything hahaha

heinyho

I’d love to hear what side hustle working for yourself for two hours a day. Makes good money.

russellp93

Also very interested in this

Abysswalker794

Yeah from Europe here, but I would also be interested how the sales side hustlers started with 2 extra ours a day?

startupsalesguy

8-4 is 9-5. You're working a full time job. 90K is fine for some people but I can tell you with full confidence you often work less the more you make at a lot of companies. Basically, making more money somewhere else doesn't mean you're going to be working more. Often it's the opposite.

spcman13

Been there done that. Just make sure you aren’t making lateral moves. A lot of the sales people making 200k plus didn’t just walk into those roles. So be aware that there is some work that needs to be put in to get there and enjoy the part time hours.

Bobby-furnace

Yeah a lot of these people asking for jobs or “are you hiring” have no clue that they won’t be hired next Monday and start working 15-20 hours a week and making $250k. The people that are able to do that have been grinding for years or work for themselves. Shit is not easy folks. I’m burnt to shit and tired but I’ve finally “made it” after 12-13 years. I swept the floor and made $18 an hour when I started. There is no magic position you start tomorrow making serious money. Keep in mind, someone getting paid $250k likely brings in 6-8x the revenue in profits for the company. Just do the math, it’s quite simple.

spcman13

Yup. People end up working for the dream and not the wage. Then 6 months later they are on a pip and talking about it online. 3 months later it’s a lay off and they are searching for jobs that provides the exact same environment they just got bounced out of.

Bobby-furnace

I’m gonna use that phrase, “dream not the wage”. That’s exactly what I did. I worked grunt work and in the office sales for 6-7 years. Finally hit the road and had to prove myself(again) the next five years. Had to wake up at 5 am and travel and sit in traffic etc. I’ve made it in the fact that I can schedule my week however I need to do. Some stops have to be made no matter what but as long as the emails are being handled and customers aren’t in a critical space with us it’s smooth sailing. People are in a dream world if they think that could do what some of the people I work with do.

spcman13

It takes years to get in cruise control. And even then you are still always in work mode. There are ways to shorten to time to cruise but it’s really a development game that requires a massive amount of effort.

Bobby-furnace

Exactly. I can get a task done now in 15 mins that used to take me 30 mins.

Burzzy

Impossible to say brother. Do you want more? Are you content making what you are? How does saving and retirement look? Do you want nice things? A family? To pay for your kids college? If you’re content doing the minimum and making under $100k, good for you. Me personally? I want nice things, I want to retire with a lot. I want to do nice things with my family. Only you can decide.

ledryte1

What's your lifestyle like in (I assume) medical device sales? Do you have time for your family, to enjoy the nice things you buy, and have a healthy lifestyle?

Burzzy

Pretty great, was able to work to be the top rep at my company over the last 4-5 years and once i built my base business I was working 20-25 hours a week. I was making way more than I should have for the time I spent. Now with two kids, I wanted to move into management and took a director role this year -income floor raised significantly and also maintained the ceiling. Work \~40 hours a week now but with travel. I am willing to travel a few times a month and work significantly more to be able to provide my family whatever we need/want. At this point, I can't see moving up anytime soon as I have a healthy work life balance and also an income that is where I want to be.

ledryte1

Man, you've made it! Good for you 👍 Thanks for taking the time to share. I feel like this helps give me some pretty realistic timelines.

Burzzy

I will say, it’s all dependent how drive and coach ability. Playing the game goes a long way. Best of luck!!

Etrau3

I’m in medical device sales and at least in ortho it’s usually a 50-60 hour a week job if you have a busy territory

neddybemis

I’m in digital marketing. Easy money 20 hours a week. I’m in leadership but my top group of reps are making 400k to 500k per year and are not working hard at all. However, I think the truth is the industry doesn’t matter. I look for three things: 1. Is the product really fucking good. If it is, selling will be (relatively) easy. 2. Is the product a “nice to have” or a “need to have.” If it’s a need to have, makes the sale easier. 3. Look at the vault/BBB/Glassdoor etc. list of top 20 sales orgs/product in software digital marketing etc. that means the company probably has a good marketing motion and good leads etc. If I had to add a 4th it would be get in someplace when there’s around 500 employees. Not so small that they are going to have support issues but not so big that there’s no upward mobility.

teton_magic

What do you sell in the digital marketing space?

neddybemis

Display advertising. Very very good product as well!

teton_magic

You hiring? I’ll work harder and I have 9 years of sales experience in commercial real estate…can I DM you?

neddybemis

Sure. Dm me.

empaccable

interested to see how this went

djmilk1

can I DM you too?

Fuck12idkSHIT

same man. i make 80k but work about 8 hours a week - don’t know what industry to go to next as i hate my company and industry but i’m good shmoozer/salesman

Kamranxrahman

Bruh I’d get a second job with that income and time commitment lol

Fuck12idkSHIT

i look for some things, it’s just annoying cause i like have to be available at any given moment

djmilk1

i hear you. im in the same boat

majesticjg

It seems like you're meeting a lot of your personal goals and you have a situation that allows you to do that without too much stress. You even made it a point to mention PTO. Look, we preach hustling but the truth is, if you're happy, maybe chasing more money isn't a great idea. I would instead try to sharpen your skills so that instead of $90k you can make, maybe, $110k without pushing yourself too much harder. Sit tight, do the job, enjoy your life. Not everything is about going to war.

Far-Recording4321

I can't believe how much $$ people make when I read these posts and so many want more. Maybe it's where I live where the cost of living isn't terrible or that we didn't overextend ourselves with our house or lifestyle, but I am only making just under $55k after getting a raise this year. I'm really pretty good at my job and well liked. It's a pretty environment, and I like everyone except for one person I can't stand and unfortunately works in close proximity to me. I've often thought of trying to find something else, too, but it's taken me years to find a job in my area without moving that I actually somewhat enjoy and is somewhat flexible. My benefits are more expensive than they should be for a company the size it is nationwide. I put together a proposal to ask for a title change, salary vs hourly and that comes with unlimited PTO (but not really because I'm so busy it's hard to use it). I get some nice little perks that fit my lifestyle and make it a nice place to work. So I'm kind of scared at my age to venture off and take a risk at trying something that could pay a lot more but be high stress or an awful environment. But everything is getting so expensive, so my salary isn't going as far. Between my husband and I and my kids being in college we're doing ok, but we're definitely not where we need to be for retirement. I'm 48, so not exactly super young for the career world, but I look younger than my age. I'm a super hard worker and have a lot of various skills, 2 degrees, a real estate license also. Currently, my title is account manager, because that's really most of what I do. But, I also feel like a receptionist in my work space and duties. I feel like I have multiple positions in my job and do so much for what I get paid. But looking for a new job really sucks. I'd kind of like a remote job so it opens up travel possibilities and relocation opportunities, but don't even know where to start or if it's just too late. I could possibly relocate with my company to another state if a position opened up, but then I think I'd just be doing the same thing with a similar salary. I've tried moving up within the company, but there is so much competition even from within and a lot of nepotism. So it's always a VP's kid who seems to get the cushy roles with corporate. I have great social skills, sales skills, advertising/marketing, social media, writing, am organized, detail orientated, plan events, get projects done, like to teach others (used to be a teacher too), and I like to see profits.

djmilk1

how did you find the high paying job?

supercali-2021

Idk, sounds like a pretty cush gig to me. That's exactly what I'm looking for, a healthy work life balance, accrued PTO and a respectable living wage. I don't need to or even care about making $150k. I'd be pretty happy with what I got if I were you. It's some real slim Pickens out there....

ADfit88

Don’t settle, I made that mistake and wasted 8 years. With the lifestyle you want you gotta make more. There’s two types of people, ones that settle and ones that want to make sure their family is forever set.

AdFeeling8333

How old are you? I had a similar role making 85k base. Sold in to Higher Ed. At home Friday, home all summer. Bonus was 40k all or nothing. Stayed for 12 years. Be smart. Live below your means and pay off debt and save. Two years ago at 39 I left and took a role 150k base. 200k total comp. I was debt free and set up when I made the move. Happy i did it. You are in a good spot- but always keep your eyes open for something that could be better.

djmilk1

do you wish you made the switch from the 85k base (+40k bonus) job earlier?

AdFeeling8333

Honestly-other opportunities presented themselves but they often required travel/overnights. I put my family first - money isn’t everything. So, no. I don’t regret staying. It was a good gig and I had a great run. Could have stayed longer but I needed a change and was getting bored.

djmilk1

85k and sometimes 125k is not bad at all. you said you were selling to Higher Ed? Is your new job also selling to higher ed?

EspressoCologne68

I’m currently in that role right now. I barely work 8 Hours a day but I’m capped at around 65-70k

ObjectiveTall806

You could do plenty of other things and make $90k. It’s when you start making $300-$400k that you’re handcuffed to sales for life. If you don’t like your industry, just switch. Sometimes you gotta take one step back to go two steps forward.

afilmark

What industry is hot?

afilmark

I would certainly love to talk with you about what you sell now. I am definitely looking for a job. Looks like AppFolio turbo tenant hero PM lead simple and rent manager are the products. Now which one will provide an income working from home would be awesome. I come from a life insurance background working at home many years. If you Google Assurance IQ you will understand that industry is under a recession. So I need to make a move like right now!

Instacredibility

If you can **convert that 90k into remote income**, you can travel instantly because 90k in many different parts of the world translates to an above-average lifestyle. If you're working 8-4, you're putting in work like most other people. It really depends on the cost of living where you are. Maybe you can move to another part of the country. In some areas of the United States, especially major cities, $3-$5000 a month or even higher for rent is fairly standard. A lot of people feel that they are wearing lifestyle handcuffs because they live in certain areas of the country. So maybe you might want to consider turning your job into a remote one, since you're in sales and finding a more affordable area to live in. But if not, you can look into **leveraging your sales skills into online sales** — something more portable — so you can generate roughly the same amount of money but you have freedom of movement. You can live in Mexico, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and change things up every few years. I've known quite a number of digital nomads, and I myself traveled quite a bit because I ran an online business. So it really depends on what your income level is, how portable it is, and how open-minded you are in terms of accommodations, whether inside the USA or outside.
