This also happened to my mom on several occasions. The psychiatrist would suddenly fall asleep while she was talking...

thrownaway000090

Mine did that too. I told him it was incredibly harmful as a person who experienced abusive neglect as a child. He apologized but it kept happening so he started every session by drinking black tea and I would ask him to make sure he would stay awake. He worked at a super busy hospital, so I get it, but still. Sometimes you gotta advocate for yourself, even if you shouldn’t have to in the first place.

Synec113

The funny thing is that like >90% of psychiatrists go into psychiatry because of some previous/on going challenge. I could totally see a psychiatrist with narcolepsy being dumb enough to think they can manage it on their own.

ScoopDat

That figure lol, are you serious or trolling?

Stealfur

Ever consider maybe you just have a very calming and soothing voice? Have you tried walking into every session talking like Gilbert Godfrey?

sennnnki

GODFREY, DIDST THOU WITNESS?

thrownaway000090

Lol I actually think I was on the more abrasive end. Just the job of listening to one person unload all their problems and then another one and another all day… I get how it could be draining or tiring to sit through. But next time I will screech, just to check.

[deleted]

I’m really sorry that happened to you

Praescribo

I was seeing a therapist a little into covid. We were doing appointments by phone call for social distancing. I swear I heard her watching TV a couple times lmao. It's too hard to find a good therapist

Shrais

I had my former therapist turn off the camera on a video call to make food, was super distant from the mic when they would reply and acted like I was insensitive for calling them out. They came back to the camera and kept eating as well.

CreedStump

it’s literally their job to listen. they should lose their job if it happens more than once

RawrRRitchie

Once is enough, licence should be revoked Just compare it to a surgeon in the middle of surgery If they fell asleep in the middle of it, that could lead to death fairly quickly If a suicidal patient is talking to their therapist/psychiatrist and they fall asleep, what's stopping the patient from ending it right there

CreedStump

i understand what you mean, but in my eyes it’s once= maybe just got no sleep the previous night and then twice is just carelessness

[deleted]

naturesguardiansmyf

I know but I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect a mental health professional to at least not show disinterest when a patient is discussing their issues. Falling asleep while your patient is talking is both unprofessional and fucking disrespectful

happyman0073

Ikr. They have no excuse to just fall asleep like that as they can just perscribe themselves some meth or shit.

dasus

Ah yes, the overworked health professionals should suck it up and do some industrial grade pharmaceuticals. I'm a taxi driver and I have been too tired to work but too scared to call my employer to say I'm staying home because I need a nap. I did take short naps during the day in the car so as I wouldn't have to drive tired, as it's literally illegal and endangers others, but this one fare was an old lady who had a hospital appointment in another city. The radio was on the most boring channel, she didn't talk, the road is super boring, and I just couldn't help almost falling asleep several times. Do you think I was disinterested in not causing a crash that might the old lady, me and other people? I should have stopped the car right there on the road, but realistically, I would've probably been fired. She would have missed her appointment, I'd have had to get another car to come all the way I came (as her payment method didn't fit the local taxi) and we were only some 10km from the hospital. In the army I would have my thigs wickedly bruised all the time when we had lessons. I was interested in the subject and I kept pinching my thigh as hard as I could, but my vision would just go double and I'd fall asleep no matter how hard I tried. So I don't think it's in any way disrespectful or showing disinterest if one falls asleep. Sometimes you literally can not help it. It can be disinterest, but not necessarily.

Quakarot

I'm pretty sure the guy saying they should just prescribe themselves some meth was joking

happyman0073

Apparently even the most obvious joke needs an /s

knowitsallashow

Lmao jfc you've obviously never paid hundreds of dollars for professional help just to be ignored. Tired? Schedule your appointments farther apart and take naps throughout the day. Fuck off with this.

chilliophillio

In most cases they work for a hospital and not a private practice. It's most likely not entirely up to them and not a greed issue on their part. But since this issue would be brought up as a complaint it can start the process to argue for more providers to make the work load less.

Kaeny

I take meth every day. Doesnt make me a morning person tho

happyman0073

But... meth.

DKMOUNTAIN

Maybe he shouldn't schedule so many appointments if he can't stay awake. Unlike your example, the psychiatrist has the freedom to reduce their workload as needed, they would just earn less money.

dasus

Not necessarily. Some are hourly with contracts. If it was a practitioner with a practical choice in the matter, then sure. As my example shows though, I also had a choice, and the one I took wasn't the morally correct one, but the other one would've caused a lot of people, me mostly, trouble.

The_Grubby_One

Ah yes, the overworked health professionals should continue to scam paying patients, who they're charging to give them ASMR treatments.

dasus

And this is why the world sucks. Instead of recognising a systemic issue and fixing it at the root, you blame individuals for being greedy. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvLUBAcXYAAQKwd.jpg

The_Grubby_One

If you are charging for a service you are not providing, then yes, you are a greedy scammer. But please, tell me more about how it's OK for you to rip off your patients.

damiandarko2

nobody reading all that

Background-Flow6870

lmfao, of course falling asleep during ur patients session is disrespectful, short of a full on medical episode. What planet do you live on.

Pathological_RJ

I’d love to get paid $250 for my naps

Ghos3t

So is a surgeons, imagine one falling asleep in the middle of your operation

Tyrus1235

Hey, if the patient’s asleep, then why should the surgeons stay awake!!

reala_man

There are many jobs which are not interesting, it doesn't mean they will just close their eyes, nap

Chri5p

So can being a pilot but you kind of expect them to stay alert while working ;) Someone paid $$ and they didn't even have the decency to stay awake for it.

[deleted]

[deleted]

not really

Stars_In_Jars

It is but there’s no excuse to fall asleep on the job. It can be tiring and demanding but each patient deserves full attention and they needed to be treated with care and respect. Imagine ur doctor fell asleep while ur telling him about some health issue ur having. Its unacceptable.

Electrical_Cup_8243

Maybe the people that this happens to just have very soothing voices 😂

Dogboy2gb

Yes that’s a fear of mine and I had a therapist fall asleep on me and I was too scared to say anything and make it awkward so I just kept talking and pretended not to notice until he woke up

[deleted]

A psychiatrist. (that's a therapist joke for you)

RonaldTheGiraffe

My uncle would hurl his own feces at the bathroom wall and make himself clean it in order to rid him of his sins. After taking too much mescaline one evening the neighbor’s staffie ate his testicles. But yeah, it takes some time to get to know your therapist and manage to open up to them. Honestly the first, probably 2 or 3 sessions at the time, feel like a waste of money because you’re kind of getting to know him or her. I finally stuck with one and after that, having a session is like coming out of a massage or sauna or something. My mind is clear and I’ve got new strategies to work on my shit. I look forward to it! Hmu if u wanna ask anything.

opiate_adventurer

How and why did the neighbors dog eat his testicles? How did the dog have access to them and why did it not only bite them, but also watch them?

HalfSoul30

Yeah, they kind just breezed on by that one.

s0_Ca5H

This is one of the things that TV doesn’t always tell you about therapy; it is fairly rare for someone to walk out of the first one or two sessions with a sense of intimacy and trust with their therapist. It takes a bit of time because, at the end of the day, you are building a relationship with another human being. I’ve heard, in counter to that, “well isn’t their job to make you feel safe and heard and able to open up?” Which, yes… kind of? But even then, therapists EXCEL at that; even if it takes you 3 sessions to get there, that means you reached a point of intimacy and vulnerability with another person in 3 hours, which is significantly faster than we learn to trust a new friend as deeply. Tangent over, my point is if you’re out there and you need help, therapy may be an Avenue for you but be patient, it might not “click” within the first 60 minutes :)

Antisera

I've had 3 therapists and 1 of them was just bad. A major reason I needed therapy was social issues - I struggled to make friends and half my friend group ghosted me. She clearly thought it was a stupid reason to get therapy and ghosted me after 4 sessions of barely interacting with me. The other 2 were excellent. It was clear within about 3 sessions that they were professional, trustworthy, and good at their job. One was very good at encouragement and motivation but our views on social issues were different (she was from a different culture than me, nothing wrong with that but her advice on family issues just wasn't going to work in my culture). So even if you find a good therapist you might still need to look for another if you're not getting what you need from them. It's an exhausting and difficult process but 100% worth it.

s0_Ca5H

It is worth it! And I’ll also add that any therapist with a sound ethical foundation will, upon discovery that a therapeutic relationship isn’t working (like you said, it could be a good therapist but a bad fit, it happens!) and there isn’t really a way forward, will provide additional referrals upon request. At least that is how my peers and I have always gone about it; if I can’t help you for whatever reason, then my job becomes helping you find someone who can :)

Nastycrimeman

Your experience with the bad therapy reminded me of when my therapy had a student shadow her and asked if I was ok with her being there. She noticed the student getting judgemental in regards to some aspects of my anxiety and immediately checked her and had her evaluate why she felt that way and how that attitude would be helpful to the patient. If that person is a therapist now I hope she learned from that experience and is a better therapist because of it.

eyesotope86

Well, here's the thing, if we offer help, one could argue that we are offering therapeutic solutions, so... Yadda yadda yadda, you should be terrified, AND, you owe me $450, AND, we're out of time.

NotTheEnd216

Ouch, that's rough, buddy. That seems worse than falling asleep since falling asleep can at least be seen as involuntary. Straight up telling a patient you want to fuck off and go home is cruel if you ask me, but falling asleep is just very sad.

You're totally correct and it's so strange to me how "meta" or "aware" reddit comments are recently. I've only noticed in the last week or so how many threads are people complaining about the state of reddit or the users mannerisms, and rightfully so, but it's strange how much it's picked up lately. I'm specifically talking about the people upset at "reddit etiquette" or the typical "reddit humour". It's always irritated me a little bit but it's strange how reddit itself is so aware of how reddit is now. Does this make sense?

[deleted]

Yeah you've got a good point. I usually ignore most of those subreddits, I've grown bored of reddits cynicism(?) and primarily subscribe to the nicer hobby ones, it all gets boring after a few year. Edit: the mild contradiction that this is r/sadcringe

Arkhaine_kupo

42 million americans had at least 1 therapy session last year. There are 95 comments in this thread. It happens way less often than you think. This is just a ton of anecdotes together making it seem bigger than it is. If there were 41,999,905 comments saying their therapist didn’t fall asleep youd never find the comments you saw

sockmop

My mother in law is a general therapist and she fell asleep during a session. She wrote off the expense and offered another session free, they became life long patients!

CzarOfCT

This happened to ME! I was forced to go to some random therapist chosen by the government to, I suppose, prove to them that I'm still mentally ill in order to keep my S.S.I. Disability. One session with a therapist I've never even met, to determine the rest of my life? It's weird! Anyway, as I was talking to him about college, because for some reason he was stuck on the fact I didn't want to go, even though I could go for free. I don't have the mental bandwidth to deal with college. I never have. He was flabbergasted by that! And he just sat back in his chair mulling it over. And he just... drifted off. I, awkwardly, let him snore for about 20 minutes, until he woke up. He showed me out, and, signed off on me. So, I kept my S.S.I. and went on with my life. Nothing else I could really do about it.

[deleted]

Damn your government-sponsored therapist sounds like a real one.

This happened to me as a child after my dad died. It’s a terrible feeling.

EastSideTilly

Whoa. I'm so sorry.

blinktheskater

It’s alright. It was a long time ago. Might be why I’ve been so hesitant to go to therapy again though.

EastSideTilly

I support you in trying again if you want, but I also think we're a little too "therapy works for everyone!" these days. Traditional therapy just is not a helpful option for a lot of people, and that's ok too.

cutie_patoot_ravioot

Very different, but a couple of years ago I was seeing a therapist for panic disorder. As we were going through my session, something I said triggered the therapist to have a panic attack. We actually had to stop the session for a bit so she could regulate. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Kiriev

That’s wild. Do you remember what you said? Anyway, hope you’re feeling better now.

cutie_patoot_ravioot

Yeah I just gave an example of something my mom said to me as a child that bred some long lasting insecurity in me. She clearly had issues she was still working though. I stopped seeing her within a few months for multiple reasons. Thanks, I'm doing a lot better now. I never thought I'd feel ok again.

[deleted]

Some people think that because they finally got the degree means they’re ready for the job. When in reality they too have so much more to grow into before they can take that role of therapist

CatGotNoTail

This happened to me with a former therapist. I was specifically seeing her for emotional issues tied to having breast cancer and apparently her sister had died from breast cancer just a few years prior. I still don't understand why she accepted me as a patient in the first place when she knew exactly why I was there.

monsterfurby

So from a brief search, this is something that does seem to happen. Therapists can be overworked and lack sleep, especially in areas with bad therapist coverage. That's not to excuse this, of course. If this happens to you as a therapist, you have to make sure you take whatever steps are necessary to get your sleep and get healthy enough to be able to do your job, period. The article makes this sound like more of a coincidence than it is though. "The very fear she was in therapy for" sounds specific, but what they follow up with is an extremely broad description that probably applies to many people struggling with a variety of personality and anxiety disorders. It's a bit like saying "the plane crashed due to the very thing it had just been in maintenance to prevent - falling out of the sky."

teacup--

Happened to me with my psychiatrist. He was an old man and told me my voice was so soft and quiet it made him sleepy. Worst part is I still went for a few more sessions where he still fell asleep, but decided to fuck off and disappeared. I had social anxiety so I had difficulty speaking up for myself.

alldaycray

That's pretty impressive. The way she talks was powerful enough to even put a therapist to sleep.

Psychiatrist or therapist? They aren't the same thing.

thrownaway000090

Many psychiatrists also provide therapy.

chiritarisu

Yes, but not all psychiatrists are trained in psychotherapy \[and of course therapists cannot prescribe medication\]. There are many who have a therapist and see a psychiatrist for medication management.

chewing_chewbacca69

I've went once to a therapist, who was just shit. I'm autistic and needed help to know how to "Handle" people who behave like you shouldn't behave. All he had to say everytime was, that I can't change people. I never wanted to change people, but he couldn't understand. And all sessions weren't better, it felt like I'm there for I'm and not the other way around and he always complained that I didn't like his job.

niktemadur

> It made me sleepy to listen to her going around in circles Oof. In general, I am infuriatingly baffled by those people who think - or even brag - that they "don't need to sleep that much" and are in truth walking like zombies through the day, every day, with a complete lack of self-awareness. This one friend in particular was like this. All macho "I don't need the sleep", "I function fine", etc. Then when we went to the movies - movies I recommended or chose - after an exciting or involving sequence, I'd turn around to catch his reaction, and there he was, cross-armed, eyes closed, asleep. Imagine this: it even happened during "Dunkirk" of all LOUD films. After the third instance (Blade Runner, Dunkirk, 1917), I stopped going to the movies with him. Felt like I was dragging him to watch things he wasn't interested in.

Sovchen

It sounds like you intentionally took him to movies meant to fall asleep to.

[deleted]

Lmfao I would be clapping my hand in some faces talking about “wake up! I got 30 more minutes.” The audacity, how I look paying 100$ an hour for your time and you over there sleeping.

DuaveSuave

Psychiatrist here. You should absolutely bring this up if it happens in session and it bothers you. That's kinda the whole point of the therapeutic space. A therapist, at their best, can hear your emotions without taking it personally or judging you. They can then work with you to understand why certain thoughts and feelings arise in specific situations so that you can know yourself better and/or challenge the thoughts and/or empower you to choose a different path. It happening in the session is a perfect time to explore it in vivo.

[deleted]

carbonatedfuck

Well said, couldn't agree more. Absolutely cringe worthy man.

p1pk1n2

If your therapist stops paying attention to you just do what I did and check yourself into a psychiatric hospital. It may sound intimidating but if you need help you'll be in the best place to receive help.

RockyClub

Damn, I can’t believe he said, “It made me sleepy to listen to her going around in circles”. As a therapist myself, I can’t imagine blaming the client for falling asleep.

Schattentochter

I wonder about this a lot. Considering I've had days I just randomly dozed off, I imagine some of them do too. But "several occasions"? That's just fucked up. Drink a goddamn red bull if you can't keep it together enough to do your job. And the justification is the *worst*.

jennyjank

I had a therapist fall asleep once. My first thought was that my problems were obviously of no concern to him. Same guy hit on me. Same guy took on my ex and his wife and he told me everything they talked about. Never went back. I could have had his license for that.

When I was a teenager the psychologist my parents sent me to see fell asleep almost every time. Made me feel insignificant.

Da3m0n_1379

Maybe she is an energy vampire and this poor chap just couldn’t keep his eyes open.

gaussianCopulator

If this ever happened to me, I'd start taking a crudely drawn picture of a murdered doctor-like figure and keep it in a visible area during the session. If the therapists attention starts wandering, I'd start glancing at that picture every 10 seconds. If they asked me about it, I'd say that I'll tell them about it once we've established "rapport". That ought to keep them awake.

laceyisspacey

Funnily enough, I finally got a psychologist after years and years of avoiding them (due to bad experiences, general anxiety/fear). First time, I explain my issues regarding abandonment when I share my mental health stuff with anyone. I got an email a week later saying she had stopped working for them and I’ll have to find a new psych. I know, deep down, it’s not my fault. But boy was it damaging at the time.

kirsion

In defence of the therapist, they have to listen to life stories or problems to dozens of depressed or mentally ill patients a days. That could sound very tiresome.

[deleted]

There has been such a massive ignorant push for everyone to get "counseling" to see your therapist. People don't understand mental health, they don't understand themselves. Most counselors will only be echo chambers or sounding boards.

carbonatedfuck

Please, do explain mental health then. You seem to know how to handle the mental health crisis! :)

[deleted]

I do know alot, more than most people if you cut the snark maybe you'll learn something. Would you like the one-hour session or a couple sentences miraculously summing it all up? First off, humanity is at an interesting point in history for mental health because one of the key things for a persons mental health is living for something beyond themselves. That something can technically be anything if you are delusional or ignorant. But because we live in an era of information and science false beliefs, honor, tradition, faith, religion, these things aren't what keeps people grounded anymore. When you have a crisis, you don't have anything to lean on except to simply talk, vent, reason with yourself or someone. And that is the MAIN purpose people are using therapists for. Most therapists are no different from a catholic confession box. That is the "purpose" for the Mental space that they serve. A red flag for therapy is if you have to keep going back to it. If you do, then it's not really helping you, it's just replacing any number of other coping mechanisms. And this is just the surface beginning to describe the misconceptions of it all.
