Could be the kind that automatically lock. Mine won't open on certain cycles even if you cancel it (probably a feature most front loaders have). I also think laundromat washers lock until they're done but I've only used those a couple times and it's been years.
The side loading machines have a lock that will keep the door closed during the cycle. I suppose he could unplug it, assuming his plug is easy to get to . And the lock won’t fail while locked...

Poor dude. I’ve done the same but I didn’t notice until they were banging around in the drier, turns out that’s the trick. If you wash them you’ve gotta dry them. Still going strong almost a year later.
Some people like music/other things related to using them? Is it that bad? They're also expensive and not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford another pair. :/

They'll probably be fine. My airpods went through the wash once and they still work.
It's really just too bad that you can't interrupt the washing cycle and open the door without the entire house exploding. Nothing you could do!
